If Change is any indication, the long and dizzying career of pianist Chick Corea is again on a decided upswing. The second studio album recorded by Corea and his sextet, Origin, Change is heavier on Corea's own compositions than was the group's Live at the Blue Note single-CD debut or expanded Week at the Blue Note six-CD box set, and the aural evidence is that the pianist has found a wellspring of inspiration in the group's company. It isn't hard to see why. The group's rhythm section of bassist Avishai Cohen and drummer Jeff Ballard is enormously supple and elastic, swinging on everything from the midtempo Miles Davis-ish "Early Afternoon Blues" to the thrilling rhythms of "Armando's Tango" and "Little Flamenco," and the group's three horn players provide an astounding array of different textures and moods. At times Change sounds almost like one of the spacious and groundbreaking Blue Note albums of the mid-'60s recorded by artists like Andrew Hill and Jackie McLean, reverberating with a kind of freedom that unleashes the best from each musician while tempering the compositions with enough structure to keep them constantly engaging. Several of the tunes, most successfully "L.A. Scenes" and "The Spinner," jettison the familiar jazz-song format of head-solos-head in favor of a through-composed approach that pushes the group through different pieces of terrain every step of the way. --Ezra Gale

5 out of 5 stars By any reckoning . . ........2004-05-26

. . . this is a great disc: impossibly tuneful, deeply swinging, rhythmically charged, featuring wonderful ensemble playing and stunning soloing.

The question arises--Where're the follow ups?

Yes, there was a previous disc, Origin, as well as a six-disc live recording of this group (too much of a good thing? Said all they wanted to say?).

Then nothing more.

Why?

Probably too hard to hold a band this talented together. Certainly, drummer Jeff Ballard has gone on to other important projects. Bassist Avishai Cohen's become a leader in his own right, turning out five very good discs before stumbling with Lyla. Altoist Steve Wilson's got several solo discs to his credit. As does trombonist Steve Davis. And tenor player Bob Shepherd has any number of projects going. Yet other talented bands, notably Ben Allison's Medicine Wheel and the Dave Holland Quintet, have stuck together.

As great a jazz trio leader and piano player as Chick Corea is--and he's among a handful of the very greatest--I think a larger ensemble fits his prodigal talents even better. There's more instrumental color, increased band interaction, a wider ranging sound signature, and more excitement.

Of the scores of Corea discs out there, this is my favorite.

Give it a whirl; I don't think you'll be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Chick at his best.......2000-02-27

I purchased this CD after seeing Chick perform live with this sextet, and I was certainly not disappointed. As much as an album cannot usually capture the experience of a live performance, this CD is truly exceptional. This is a truly unique group, which features non-traditional jazz instruments like bass clarinet, flute and trombone among others. The result is a rich musical tapestry. Chick's piano flourishes certainly enhance the album, but he is not the only virtuouso here - bassist Avishai Cohen is one of the most amazing on the scene right now and you will see why. The best tracks : "Armando's Tango" - a truly rhythmic piece that provides a real taste of Argentina and the atmospheric ballad "Home." That said, there is not a bad track on this disc.

5 out of 5 stars recommended.......1999-09-08

Chick is a very deliberate and emphatic pianist--yet playful. (He's learned to work the vibraphone.) His new co-conspirators play a variety of instruments. Sunday's concert (September 5, 1999) began with trombone, soprano saxophone, and bass clarinet, an unusual set of timbres that don't quite congeal and please for just that reason. Well, Origin: great musicians all and very much recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great cd! Great band! Corea on a roll!.......1999-07-10

Chick is on a roll. The past few years he's been putting out an impressive body of work. The Bud Powell cd was great as were the live Origin sets and the new duets w/Burton and Like Minds w/Burton, Metheny,etc... and now this gem - which might be the best of the lot! A really great band playing fresh, challenging and listenable music. This one has dominated my cd player since I got it. Bears repeated listenings! My early vore for cd of the year/jazz musician of the year

On Live at the Blue Note, pianist Chick Corea rediscovers the pleasures of playing acoustic jazz with a talented group of like-minded musicians. Featuring the versatile front line of trombonist Steve Davis and multiple reed players Bob Shepard and Steve Wilson, Corea's structured compositions provide plenty of room for extended improvisation and impassioned solos. The malleable rhythm section of bassist Avishai Cohen and drummer Adam Cruz pushes these performances into a realm of dynamic interplay and authentic inspiration. Highlights include the Duke Ellington-inspired "Molecules" and a 13-minute interpretation of the Jimmy Van Heusen-Johnny Burke standard "It Could Happen to You." Corea's own playing is particularly powerful, drawing from his diverse experiences with Miles Davis, Return to Forever, and even his freewheeling work with Circle. --Mitch Myers

5 out of 5 stars stunning jazz from a modern master.......1998-07-12

This live album from piano extrodinare Chick Corea will bring your speakers to life. Each song glistens with talent, not only from Corea but from every member of the band. The complex, soulfull drumming of Adam Cruz stands out particularly. The sweeping "Double Image" keeps the listener fascinated for it's entire 17 minute running time, as practically every musician in the bands solos. And the remake of "It Could Happen to You" is also well worth mention (all 7 tracks are worth mention, for that matter). I highly recommend this cd to anyone, whether they're seasoned jazz afficianados, or new to the genre. You won't be dissapointed.

This six-CD set has its origin, no pun intended, in pianist Chick Corea's desire to go live with an acoustic band that needed absolutely no studio gimmicking or afterthought. In that spirit, he debuted the sextet, which features Corea alongside alto saxophonist Steve Wilson, tenor saxophonist Bob Sheppard, trombonist Steve Davis, bassist Avishai Cohen, and drummer Adam Cruz, with music from one evening in this stretch on one CD. Even further in the spirit of unedited performances, Corea has here packaged the complete sets from three of the Blue Note nights. The sextet is in fine form, pivoting off Corea's sometimes avant-leaning pieces with great intimacy and sureness. Wilson's alto solos are each densely intelligent and modular, studying small nodes and rearranging them continually. There are also great moments where Sheppard and Wilson double on bass clarinet and E-flat clarinet, making for on-the-spot textural studies. The six CDs are built out of largely the same tunes, each taken at least twice over the course of this box set. In addition, the tunes are lengthy, with plenty of exploratory room, making for awesome solos all the way around. For fans of Corea's sharp distillation of impressionism, bebop architecture, and avant-garde nuances, this set is a must-buy. And it has the earmarks of a great all-encompassing digest, not unlike the nine-CD Art Pepper Complete Village Vanguard box set. --Andrew Bartlett

3 out of 5 stars Things never seem to gel, despite all the talent........2000-07-24

Having read a favorible review of Corea's new group in Downbeat, I checked this set out of the library with high expectations, but I was somewhat disappointed.

Corea plays acoustic piano and is joined by two mult-reed players, a trombonist, an acoustic bassist, and a drummer. His sidemen are all younger players.

The concept of the set is impeccable, though: record the group as it performed with no overdubs or editing. Live jazz with no doctoring, it is! However, something is missing; the chemistry doesn't seem to be there, although there is some good soloing and numbers are far from sloppy. I salute Mr. Corea's desire to bring back authentic, live, acoustic jazz (after his many journeys into fusion). The group had not been together for very long when this was recorded, which may be part of the problem.

Instead of spending all the money on a big box set, the dedicated Corea fan is advised to first purchase the single CD version of these sets to investigate the sound.

I wonder if jazz will ever reach the aesthetic summit of the best of the 1950s and early 1960s again...the days of Bird, Coltrane, Miles, Monk, Mingus, Kirk, Dolphy, and others.

4 out of 5 stars A relaxed and swinging live acoustic band.......2000-06-12

Mr Corea has tried to reproduce on these 6CD's the sonic experience of actually being at the club BLUE NOTE to hear his band ORIGIN - thus no overdubbing, editting, minimal equalisation and so on. Technically, there should be no quibbling about the quality of the recording and the sound image of the band - even the faint sound of someone's mobile phone ringing is not a distraction. Most of the works are originals but there are three tunes by Mr Thelonious Sphere Monk, whilst Mr Miles Davis, Mr Charles Parker, Msrs Rodgers and Hart and Msrs Van Heusen and Bourke are represented by one tune each. Naturally there is plenty of space for extended solos and some tunes are played a number of times. An interesting case in point is MATRIX first performed by the then 26 year old Mr Corea on the excellent NOW HE SINGS NOW HE SOBS and reprised here three times, once at 19 minutes, once at 23 minutes and once at 13 minutes. Also intriguing and interesting is the band's theme SAY IT AGAIN which seems a free improvisation which I would have liked to have heard in extended form. Overall though, this acoustic band provides a relaxed and swinging programme of music with a very high degree of musicianship. Good value for money which is graced by some attractive abstract art originals by Mr Corea.

5 out of 5 stars the most innovative music to come along in years.......1999-03-01

Once again Chick Corea has taken his own musical development another step further. One of the most intriguing aspects of this new band is it's display of all that Chick has done before and yet it still goes a step beyond. Not a weak link in the whole band. I also had the opportunity to see this band live recently. If you can, GO! If not, this will give you a good idea of whats happening.
