Novelist Cormac McCarthy's literary vision of the wild west is given wide-screen treatment by maverick director Billy Bob Thornton and a cast that includes Matt Damon, Penelope Cruz, and Bruce Dern. Professional country music journeyman Marty Stuart has performed with father-in-law Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, and Doc Watson, in addition to a successful solo career. In his soundtrack scoring debut, he provides short, meditative instrumental pieces that are subtly explosive--rife as they are with strains of old-school country and bluegrass. Cinematic strings and orchestral percussion add a welcome menacing edge, augmenting the rustic approach without crossing over into a compromised "countrypolitan" sound. If anything, it might be nice to hear these themes extended. As it stands, the 23 listed tracks are covered in a little under 50 minutes, with many of the cuts barely lasting more than a minute or two. They stand as a new genre of cinematic country minimalism. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars Great western soundtrack.......2004-02-28

This is a must buy for fans of western soundtracks. It mixes beautifully symphonic music with Guitar music and spices it up all together with a south of the border flavor. Haunting music that will make you want to never take it out of your cd changer. It also
Features two vocal pieces, the first a spanish song sung by the very talented Raul Malo of the country group the mavericks, the second song is a beautiful ballad sung by Marty Stuart. Though I never owned any cd's of Marty Stuart he earns my respect with composing this film score.(cowboy hats off to you Mr.Stuart)

5 out of 5 stars Truly Incredible.......2003-03-12

This album is a masterpiece. Within the first strums of the guitar, you feel as though you are among the southwestern hills. It has immediately become one of my favorites of all-time. The songs are filled with beautiful imagery, enchanting tunes, and haunting melodies. The shortness of the songs in unnoticable, as each song blends into the next, and the album itself serves as one epic journey. It is not meant to be listened to a song at a time, but as a whole. As I said, it is truly incredible. I would recommend it to absolutely anyone.

5 out of 5 stars James Taylor---A Master of Putting Emotion Into Lyrics and Music .......2007-06-17

I cannot say that there is anything Mr. Taylor has recorded that I do not like. Having said this, I must add that Mr. Taylor, a brilliant lyricist and musician, created songs that touched upon most, if not all, of the feelings I went through in my own divorce. Both the lyrics and the music are absolutely appropriate to one another; and, to me they seemed universal to the emotions that tumble over one another as one goes through a divorce. I would recommend it to anyone who is going through a divorce or any sort of loss, but I would also recommend it to anyone who simply appreciates beautiful lyrics and beautiful music, sung and played by a one of a kind artist, a true American treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Reflections on a tumultuous time...............2007-03-28

There is no doubt that this period was very dark. It is althroughout this album. Her Town Too, contrary to what some may think, is NOT about the Taylor's breakup. JT himself has stated this. On the surface, it is sometimes too easy to try to connect the dots. Not only was the marriage coming apart, but the loss of John Belushi is told in That Lonesome Road. With his passing, JT began the climb out of his addictions.Dad Loves His Work is the statement of JT's life, and what makes it.

5 out of 5 stars Perfection.......2006-04-18

All of the tracks on this album are good, but the standout for me is "The Lonesome Road." The harmonizing is gorgeous, and more importantly...the message in the song is a dead-on lesson in how to behave.Listen to it.Get this. JT is the best.

4 out of 5 stars Setting life to music.......2006-01-18

`Stand and Fight' is the outstanding song on this CD for me. I can remember James Taylor and Carly Simon doing a great duet on `Mockingbird' in the movie `No Nukes,' so it seems obvious that James Taylor would be familiar with the feeling, "When are people ever going to see that there ain't nothing that is ever going to change until someone decides that it is time to stand and fight?" `Sugar Trade' offers a more balanced view of "Who is to blame? The captain or the cargo or the juice of the sugar cane?" on rum and race questions that resulted from the triangle of trade that provided economic support for colonies: ships bringing slaves to the Caribbean could carry rum to New England, the juice of the sugar cane being a major product among the early Americans. Ships leaving New England could carry whatever the colonists produced to Europe, then go back to Africa for more slaves. The song makes "the family name" part of the legacy, as if being haunted by history is as tragic as A TALE OF TWO CITIES by Charles Dickens, in which the revolution in France has jokes about heads getting a shave and a haircut.

`That Lonesome Road' has music that is meant to tear your heart out, which usually works. The songs on this album all show a creative spirit tied to the themes and styles that support him in spite of whatever problems most people would have if they faced the expectation that talent should be producing something that will bring in tons of money by coming up with something new and different.

5 out of 5 stars Daddy Loves This CD.......2002-09-05

I've been a JT fan for about three years now. I started out with the Greatest Hits CD and have sporatically bought some of his studio albums: Mud Slide Slim, Sweet Baby James, JT, Hourglass and Gorilla. I recently purchased "October Road." I wasn't overy impressed with the CD but it has grown on me ("Mean Old Man" and "Caroline I See You" being early favorites). Getting "October Road" inspired me to continue my JT album collection and I just purchased "Dad Loves His Work." I didn't have grand expectations for this CD because the album cover seemed drab and uninspired. Boy, was I wrong! Dare I say it, this is my favorite JT album and I thought I'd never say that after hearing "Hourglass." After hearing the last track, "That Lonesome Road," I didn't move for about five minutes. JT is a genius and a gift from God. "I Will Follow" is another favorite but to tell you the truth they're all gems. If you're a JT fan, this album is a MUST for your collection. Albums like this remind me why I find JT's music and voice so irresistible.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect Father's Day Song.......2006-07-05

I bought this CD specifically so I could rip the "My Dad" song from it... I used it as the background music to a slideshow of pictures of our son to give to my husband for Father's Day. It was perfect for that purpose. Frankly, the rest of the CD just isn't my taste of music, so I can't comment on it. But for the one song, it was sweet and sentimental... the perfect note for my slideshow.

This album grows for every listening. Simply one of the best rock-album ever from one of the best rockbands ever.
A must have for music lovers. D-A-D have done a lot of classics but I think they just getting better and better.

4 out of 5 stars A rousing call to arms for the faithful.......2006-05-13

This is a good album that DAD have produced here. It is more immediate and upbeat than some of their recent output and really captures the spark they had when they were writing outright rock albums like No Fuel Left for the Pilgrims.

It's hard to pick highlights given that the album hangs together as a whole so well. Ninteenhundredandyesterday and Everything Glows are excellent rockers as are Road Below Me. The humour is here as well which is just awesome, permeating so many of their tracks with that extra spark that makes you want to play it again. Kiss Between the Legs is the one track where they don't wait for you to hear the lyrics to hear their humour, as soon as you see the title you know it's gonna be fun.

The introspective numbers are here as well. A couple of them, for my mind As Common As, don't actually work. But others here do such as Candybar which is a plaintive (almost) ballad.

The upbeat delivery and modern production have certainly gotten the DAD machine out of the bog it was starting to get stuck in. This isn't a bad album to pick up for anybody who knew these guys years ago and is wondering what on earth they've been doing since.

5 out of 5 stars Everyhting Glows Beautifully.......2000-11-08

Once again, D.A.D proves to be one of the most creative and inspiring hard rock bands around. It's a crying shame that the band never caught on in the U.S. because, as this new CD proves, this band posesses so much awesome originality. Every song is laced with great hooks, gruff vocals, and crunchy yet melodic guitars . . . just what this band has been doing since they became the pride of Denmanrk some 20 years ago. Pick up Everything Glows. It's well worth it!

4 out of 5 stars D.A.D are back.......2000-10-04

D.A.D are back - 3 yaers after their huge commercial success 'Simpatico' many things have changed, the most influentiel change however has been a new drummer. The more alternative/slow rock that was symptomatic for 'simpatico' has been dumped in favor of raw rock and roll. Songs like 'Everything Glows' and 'nineteenhundredandyesterday' are true to the bands original rock sound. One might say that D.A.D have looked back in it's past to rediscover the spark that made them the greatest rock band to spring from Denmark ever.

4 out of 5 stars Nancy Sinatra sings two songs with her dad and one for him.......2003-08-26

This CD-single came out in 1998 exactly one month after Frank Sinatra died. It features "It's For My Dad," a tribute song by his daughter Nancy and the two duets they recorded in the 1960s. The duet "Somethin' Stupid" was recorded by father and daughter in just two takes and hit #1 in 1967, appearing on his "Frank Sinatra and the World We Knew" album (the single only made its way onto her hit collections). "Feelin' Kinda Sunday," released the year before on her second album, "How Does That Grab You?", was never released as a single. Obviously the first track is the one that makes this worth having because any fan of either Sinatra is already going to have the hit "Somethin' Stupid." While Lisa Marie Presley did a mixed duet of "Don't Cry Daddy" to honor her father, similar to what Natalie Cole did with "Unforgettable," I appreciate that since Nancy had already hit the top of charts singer with her dad that she chose to honor him in this way. The simplest but also the most touching of the musical tributes paid to Ol' Blue Eyes.

4 out of 5 stars A Tribute.......2003-08-13

This is a tribute from Nancy Sinatra to her father who passed on in 1998. This CD features 3 songs, "It's For My Dad", the #1 duet "Somethin' Stupid", and the other duet, "Feelin' Kinda Sunday." Although it may not seem as not, it's still nice to collect - nothing for Sinatra fans to go crazy over.

4 out of 5 stars A valentine.......2002-02-23

Unlike the other reviewer, I appreciate this CD for what it is : a heartfelt valentine from Nancy to her late father, featuring their two 1967 duets and a middling but sweet song addressed to him. Nothing earth-shattering here, but a small, sentimental collectible for Sinatra (Frank and/or Nancy) fans.

1 out of 5 stars "Something Even More Stupid!".......2001-09-09

The only reason even the most ardent Sinatra fan would want this four song "tribute" CD is a small passage of actual recording studio chatter between Frank, Nancy and Billy Strange taken from the "Something Stupid" session in 1967.

Frank (to Nancy) "I have to sing a little louder during that passage...you sing louder too.."
Nancy: "I love those guitars"
Frank: "that's the whole record"

If the entire CD was made up of this kind of material, it would be worth the buy....

Unfortunately........

    Album Description

Tower Of Love is the debut of the year, a swirling ethereal wonder to soundtrack your dreams and underscore. Tower of Love is not just packed full of great pop tunes, however. Noir's mastery of computers and things that go beep adds depth and rewards repeat listening. With influences ranging from the Beta Band ('A Quiet Man', 'My Patch' and the chirpy lo-fi of 'Turn Your Frown Into A Smile') to the first British pop explosion of the mid 1960s - 'Turbulent Weather' could almost be 21st Century rewrite of The Small Faces' 'Itchycoo Park' with added Casio interludes - Noir is clearly a man who isn't prepared to just sit on his laurels and go with whatever flow fashion dictates this week. My Dad. 2006.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars packs quite a punch in the songwriting department.......2007-02-15

An intoxicating blend of Brian Wilson-like vocals and Beatles-esque back beats. It packs quite a punch in the songwriting department for a mellow album.

    5 out of 5 stars Mellifluous Moods.......2007-01-13

"My Patch" seems to be a funky melodious invitation to danger with hypnotic bouncy road trip appeal. There are elements of the Beatles and Nick Drake mixed with a more edgy electronica. "I Me You I'm Your" seems to filter in from space like a psychedelic haze and then leaves just as quickly.

"Computer Song" cascades over itself with creative lyrics and a melodious tension. If someone in a tribal forest was riding on a train it might sound like "Tower of Love" but then suddenly you are on a carousel going round and round and a circus appears with a soft orchestral appeal. It is difficult to define a category for some of the songs, but this one has an especially magical innocence.

"Key of C" is unexpected but expands the sound in bubbles within bubbles of acoustic appeal. "Climb a Tree" has interesting waterfalls (you hear then again in Turbulent Weather) and explores guitar within an especially beautiful ballad with mellifluous moods. This is an album you can put in the CD player and listen to without a worry in the world. If you love Pink Floyd, Nick Drake, The Beach Boys or The Beatles, you might really fall in love with this sound.

    ~The Rebecca Review

    5 out of 5 stars outstanding release.......2006-06-28

i don't typically hand out five-star ratings. for something to earn five-stars, it's gotta sound like nothing i've heard for before, all the while keeping in mind the importance of solid musicianship and songcraft. when i first plopped in 'tower of love,' i wasn't quite sure what to expect, but after a gave the album a listen, i can quite comfortably state jim noir is a genius.

the album opens with 'my patch.' it begins with some beach boys-esque harmonies and an electric piano before materializing into a plunky, catchy little number. the lyrics are a tad silly: 'if you ever step on my bush, i'll bring you down, i'll bring you down.' 'i me you i'm your' sounds a bit like the heavy blinkers. it's a track not out of place on 1970s AM gold radio. 'my computer' is again a bit silly lyrically, but musically entertaining. 'eanie meany' is one of the album's standouts. it's currently used by addidad in their amazing world cup ads. for the sake of reference, it sounds like the best track the byrds never wrote. 'tower of love' is a perfect slice from a 60's cinematic soundtrack. 'in the key of c' sounds as though mozart spent some time at willy wonka's chocolate factory and wrote a disco song. i know, i know...

if it sounds like the album's all over the map, it is. noir experiments with quite a number of styles and sounds from the comfort of his home studio (and from what i gather he plays all the instruments, too). the kicker is that he actually pulls them all off. his melodies are tight and effective. it'd be easy to abuse the beach boy harmonies (as so many do), but fortunately noir refrains from over-indulgence. he uses them when he needs to, and thereby gets maximum effect. it's a tribute to his talents.

what impresses me most is that the album is that it's endlessly interesting. it's a perfect example of using modern technology without sounding excessively modern. noir likes to dip his finger in nostalgia, pulling out just enough to remind you where his roots lay. in the end, noir is a product of the computer generation and uses it to advantage to weld the past and the present together. in short, noir is a force to reckon with.

from what i gather, his album's slated for domestic release roundabouts august 8th. a certain contender for my album of the year. get it. you'll be glad you did.

The stylish debut album by Corduroy, an instrumental British quartet obsessed with vintage spy movie soundtracks and TV show themes, is a stellar swirl of wah-wah guitars, funky bass lines, and jazz-house beats. Dad Man Cat owes equal debt to the experimental wit of electric Miles Davis and the gritty audio imagery of Ennio Morricone. "The Girl Who Was Death" is typical of the band's sonic breadth, opening with resonating percussion and falling into lush organ- and guitar-driven groove. "Ponytail," meanwhile, showcases a more laid-back approach, with the sound of handclaps and groaning rounding out the song's vibe. Perfect for any home where shag carpeting and lava lamps set the style. --Aidin Vaziri

5 out of 5 stars They never answer their emails!.......2000-09-04

    Chaps!

Without doubt the quintessential 90's jazz funk revival record!

The london and ny funksters agree.....i just bought my fifth copy since i've lent and nevr retrieved it or its been just plain nicked...

I've asked to come and play parties here in the US where they'll get a huge crowd but no dice....Simon (the guitarist) has a mate from school called Barry Cronin who say's they are bit up their own backsides.....

PS for a continuation try and grab a rare copy of "High Havoc" the second. After that it goes a bit sour......the new one though "Clik" is ace....

    Cheers Chuckles

5 out of 5 stars Throw down five fisted funk with the jazz just right.......1999-06-16

If you are a drummer and want to funk, this album is an aerobic workout. You will not be disapointed with the solid groove and subtle changes that make playing to this album a sweaty good time. I haven't had so much fun since jamming to live Police. Bold tempos, and wicked bass lines challenge you kick as well as your ride. This is a must buy!

5 out of 5 stars The best Corduroy album to date.......1999-03-25

We kick things off with a hot track called "Chowdown" & believe me, you could feast on this groove all night!

The sound is excellent, with plenty of swinging bass & percussion, 70's sounding wah wah guitar & cool organ. I really like the ending of Chowdown - listen carefully for the bravo in the background.

The tempo slows a little for "Long Cool & Bubbly" - a bit more mellow, time to catch a breather after the first track.

Things start to pick up again with "Frug in G Major" & really getting moving on "Electric Soup" (by far one of the better tracks on the CD). Electric Soup is the track that started it all for me, when I first heard it on a "Best of Totally Wired" compilation - & I haven't looked back since!

All of the tracks are gems! Top 3 picks?!? Electric Soup, Chowdown & Ponytail (love the guitar & hand claps of course!).

4 out of 5 stars pretty good album.......1998-10-07

good bass lines and a beat that you could tap you foot to. i liked it.

    5 out of 5 stars Essential Listening.......2006-03-07

Anybody who's interested in hearing brilliant old school fiddle playing without having to strain to listen through the snap, crackle and pop, will love this album. Clean production. Brilliant playing. Full of great ideas for pickers looking for variations on Bill Cheatham (although that particular track is not on this album, there are close variations.)
