R&B with tempo: Justin Timberlake resurrected it, and it's proving way more influential than that other lost commodity--sexy--he claimed to be bringing back in 2006 on FutureSex/LoveSounds. Timberlake is to Robin Thicke what 'N Sync and Backstreet Boys were to a band like O-Town, in fact: he pretty much made it all possible. But even though it took one blue-eyed soulster with a hot look and an achy falsetto to bang down the door for another, Thicke presents a convincing case here that he had the goods to get us grooving all along: Evolution is a classy disc that tiptoes up to its listeners, first with an elegant duet with Faith Evans ("Got 2 Be Down"), next with a slick lament that wouldn't sound out of place on a Boyz II Men disc ("Complicated"), and then with a sweet plea that commands a finger-snap ("Would That Make U Love Me"). By the time we reach the long, sweeping lullaby that is the final track, "Angels," we've also had a taste of Thicke's swaggering side ("I Need Love," "Cocaine"), his hip-hop loving side ("All Night Long" and "Shooter," both with Lil Wayne), and the side that fantasizes about 1950s Latin ballrooms ("Everything I Can't Have," a hot tamale of a number that commands a visual if ever there was one: it's impossible to hear this song without imagining a raven-haired woman with a red rose between her teeth). Despite the range of moods on display, they're all in service to Thicke's inner R&B smoothie, and they all brush up against the ear with something like affection. Hard as it will be for listeners of a certain age to get past knowing that Thicke is the son of Alan Thicke, the actor who did his part to cheese up 1980s TV with the sitcom Growing Pains, they're going to have to: with his fan base swelling by the second, the evolution of Robin Thicke is going to be a deservedly loud one. --Tammy La Gorce

Album Description

NOTE: This deluxe edition features a ringtone of "Lost Without U," an autographed poster, and cell-phone wallpaper.

The Evolution of Robin Thicke is the second solo album from the critically acclaimed, Grammy award winning songwriter and producer of records for such artists as Michael Jackson and Christina Aguilera. The album is a timeless work of art. With a voice of purity, passion and soulfulness, Robin brings to life the stories and emotions of the last two years of his life.

The album is filled with incandescent magic. It is an album that tells the tales of love, loss, temptation, redemption and finding hope when all the odds are against you. "My greatest desire with this album was to write songs that were completely honest and sing them with the emotion I was feeling when I wrote them, so that whoever listens to my music is brought as close to my experiences and life as possible."

Reflective, redemptive, passionate and etched with a soulfulness that is undeniable, The Evolution of Robin Thicke is an imaginative and heart-felt album that you cannot help but be moved by, bob your head to and smile throughout.

4 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-07-20

Well I just received this CD in the mail from Amazon and bought it because I saw Robin Thicke on Good Morning America where he sang "Lost Without You" which I love. The rest of the CD in most cases is excellent - with the exception of one or two songs on it I think it deserves to do very well. I also like the fact that he doesn't only sing falsetto, and he sings in very different styles which really shows his versatility.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT MUSIC FROM A GREAT ARTIST.......2007-07-20

I have been a Robin Thicke fan since I saw the once long haired singer belting out "When I Get You Alone". Another early song to fall in love with is "Stupid Things". I have to admit that when I heard "Shooter" with Lil Wayne, I was not even thinking about getting this CD. I HATE THAT SONG!! But once I heard "Can U Believe", I ordered it, and have been listening to the entire CD everyday now. You won't be dissapointed!! I hope the rest of world learns to love him like I have been doing for a while now.

3 out of 5 stars Soothing love music.......2007-07-15

I absolutely loved one or two of the songs but I found the album as a whole a bit bland. I did not really see the evolution but I do not know his earlier music.

3 out of 5 stars Robin Thicke's Evolution CD - Only Liked Half.......2007-07-12

Robin Thicke is talented vocally and lyrically, unlike other people who sell CDs but cannot sing or people who write songs with incredibly boring, repetitive lyrics (i.e., Justin Timberlake). I like Robin's voice, but didn't like about half of this CD. Also, I thought the track about the "school girl" was in poor taste, given the focus on pedophiles and inappropriate advances by teachers toward students that have hit the news in the last five years. Would recommend CD to others with "conditions." Even so, I do like Robin Thicke and hope his fronting on tour for Beyonce goes well.

4 out of 5 stars I'm Surprised........2007-07-11

I didn't expect much from this CD. I purchased it on the strength of the beautiful' Lost Without u'. I've normally found that these days, this would be the stand out song on the CD, with all the rest failing to meet my expectations. Well on this CD, I have been pleasantly surprised. Things start off with: 'Got 2 be Down, with Faith Evans. This has a Marvin Gaye vein going through it, and positive love lyrics to boot. 'Complicated' follows, which has a piano foundation to it. My, it's so good to hear a melodic song with a structure, with real (sounding) instruments to boot.' Would that make u love me' follows, with a lovely sung 'Marvinish' hook. Infectious. 'Lost without U', to me, is the perfect example of a great love song that is not TOO sugary. Really Uplifting ( with a great video) Ask Myself, Everything I Can't Have, Teach U A Lesson, I Need Love, Can U Believe, are tunes that I can let play without skipping, and show cases his beautiful falsetto voice. The worst moments are the songs featuring Lil' Wayne, and Pharrell, which sound horrendous, especially 'Wanna Love you Girl' with Pharrell. For me the minimalistic, less is more approach to the majority of the songs on here, help to highlight Mr. Thicke's voice, and have resulted in a great overall product. All-in all a good CD which is one of the best I have purchased this year.

This is a wonderful album. If you're a fan of neyo soul and smooth r&b you will fall in love with this record. Robin Thicke's voice will sooth and relax you on some of the slower tracks. The upbeat tempos are sure to get you on your feet. Robin is all about making good music. This is a fantastic buy. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars An exeptional SOPHOMORE effort that has appeal for the masses.......2007-06-19

The measure of a good artist is how well he/she is able to transcend genders and age groups, garnering support from both young and old. Robin Thicke's "Evolution" is just one of those albums for there is enough of the hip-hop "flava" to satisfy the teens/twenty-somethings while he throws in enough "old school" sounds to lasso the respective groups' parents AND grandparents.

It's obvious that Thicke's channeling a certain Mr. Gaye for the young soulster effortlessly jumps from falsetto to his natural tenor, just as the legendary singer did. Thicke accompanies himself on background, a technique that Gaye often utilized.

Of course the album highlight is the ubiquitous hit "Lost Without U." But, as hinted before, the remaining fifteen tracks are so varied that there is most definitely something for everyone.

The only detractor is the choice of colors for the liner notes: gold writing on a black background. With the print being as small as it is, it is most difficult to read the lyrics, production info, or the acknowledgments.

And there are some of us that enjoy reading them!

1 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE AND JUST PLAIN HORRIBLE.......2007-06-15

You need to list "0" stars here, there is no option for that? Because this is what I give this CD. I don't think anybody who can ACTUALLY HEAR could think this guy can sing?? Anyone can sing in this fake high screeching voice, just try it, you'll see. He's taking everyone for a ride with this. People will buy anything today and think it's cool (because they want to look cool.) but this guy just ain't happening. This guy is far from cool; he's laughable. I can't believe people are this stupid to buy this act. This is a no-talent guy riding his dad's coat tails. Oh brother. What saddens me the most is how stupid people really are to like this [...] and call it music? What's the draw in making some adult man sound and sing like a five year old?? This guy's a joke. Either that or else everyone's gone deaf. I actually cringe with embarrassment when I hear this guy.

3 out of 5 stars 3-1/2 stars -- An improvement, but he's still got some evolving to do.......2007-06-06

Robin Thicke first appeared on the scene simply under his surname and released a song called "When I Get You Alone", whose music was taken from Beethoven's Fifth. After hearing that song as well as "Be Alright", I picked up his album A Beautiful World (initially titled Cherry Blue Skies), and then I thought I had been duped because the album really wasn't that great. Now Robin cut off his hippie hair and came back with The Evolution of Robin Thicke.

This is another one of those albums that I listened to once and didn't like, but I listened to a second time and then decided that it isn't so bad. The album was also supposed to be released long before its actual October 2006 release date (I don't know exactly how long ago), and I wonder if it was delayed due to the lack of promotion for the leadoff single, the obligatory Neptunes track "Wanna Love U Girl" (I never liked that song either, and it ended up on here for some reason). But "Lost Without U" is what got people to really pay attention to the album, and for good reason: it might be the best song on here.

The other slow songs are also quality, like "Angels", "I Need Love" and "Lonely World" (which is reminiscent of another blue-eyed soul singer's song, Jon B's "Lonely Girl"). And although "Teach U a Lesson" looks extremely cheesy on paper, it's actually able to be overlooked once you hear the song. These songs are the standouts because Robin is a lot better at ballads than with uptempo tracks.

That's not to say ALL the fast songs are bad. "Ask Myself" is good, as is "Complicated" and the Faith Evans-assisted "Got 2 Be Down". "Would That Make You Love Me" flows well, but that title alone should tell you that it's a been-there-done-that tale. And that leads to missteps like "Everything I Can't Have", which sounds like it was recorded during a circus parade; and the fact that it begins with "Ladies and gentlemen, The Evolution of Robin Thicke" makes me question why it isn't the opening track. "Cocaine" is confusing, and the two songs featuring Lil' Wayne ("All Night Long" and "Shooter") should have been left behind; especially "Shooter", which is a remixed version of a song of the same name from A Beautiful World (and it wasn't very good THEN, either).

In fact, ALL of those tracks could have been left behind so that the album wouldn't be as long as it is (73 minutes). Oh, well; while I still think Robin Thicke has a little more work to do, this album is still enthralling enough to warrant a purchase.

The jury's still out on discs with spoken-word interludes. Should the music always speak for itself? Or is the occasional verbal breakdown useful? Ciara, R&B's most tantalizing goodie (without the two shoes), makes clear on The Evolution that she prizes the chance to tell listeners how it is--four between-song snippets dot the disc. But her momentary digressions will probably make up more than a few minds that Janet Jackson, and only Janet Jackson, ought to be allowed to ramble before the mic: when the music is this hot, it doesn't matter how sincere or saucy the dialogue--it's a distraction. The Evolution is a door-buster of a CD--Lil Jon gets the speakers jumping in milliseconds on opener "That's Right," Ciara dabbles in Curtis Mayfield-style creative phrasing on "Promise" (and it works), and Chamillionaire pumps "Get Up," a play-it-loud club number, full of hip-hop heat. Helpers and inspirers aside, though, this is Ciara's party, and she knows how to please a guest. "Get In, Fit In" finds her putting the sizzle in a space-age soundscape. And the buzz and fuzz of "I Proceed" plump her breathy vocals enough to put a point across, that being that few modern songstresses work a beat better. The striking part, and the part she should take into account the next time she's considering a disc with interludes, is that she didn't even need to tell us so. --Tammy La Gorce

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars NO EVOLUTION ON THIS ONE........2007-07-15

IT'S NOWHERE NEAR "GOODIES" EVEN THOUGH I DIDN'T BUY GOODIES (I HAD A FRIEND MAKE ME A COPY) I WENT OUT TO BUY THIS ONE, AND I WASTED MY MONEY. SHE NEEDS TO STICK TO HER STRONG POINT (DANCE SONGS) CAUSE DA ONLY MID-TEMPO SONG DAT ARE GOOD ARE "PROMISE" AND "C.R.U.S.H." NOW I SEE WHY SHE DON'T WANT ANYONE TO COMPARE HER TO JANET, CAUSE SHE'S NOT ABLE TO DO MID-TEMPO AND SLOW, BABY MAKING SONGS LIKE MS. JACKSON. I GIVE CIARA ONE MOREALBUM, AND THAT WILL BE ALL WE WILL HER FROM HER AND HER "MUSIC CAREER". P.S.- SHE CAN'T ACT EITHER.

3 out of 5 stars More like a DE-evolution.......2007-07-09

Ciara's debut album Goodies wasn't classic material, but it still produced some good moments like "1, 2 Step", "And I" and a few others. And I'm starting to appreciate it more after listening to her sophomore album, The Evolution.

We all know what "evolution" means, but it seems that in the case with R&B albums, that usually signifies a step BACKWARD. My brother said that no one under the age of 18 should own Goodies, but I actually think that's a more suitable description for THIS album. A lot of these songs seem tailor-made for middle school ("C.R.U.S.H.", anyone?).

There are some good songs on here, though, like "Like a Boy", "I Found Myself" and especially "My Love". And "Get Up" is good except for Chamillionaire's watered-down verse. But the rest of the album is mostly made up of mindless dance songs, like "Get In, Fit In", "Bang It Up", and the 50 Cent-assisted "Can't Leave `Em Alone" (and note to Fiddy: the word is "conversationalist", not "conversationist"). Another okay song featuring a "necessary" rapper is the overrated "That's Right" with Lil Jon, but it gets worse when Ciara tries to rap (why do young female R&B singers keep DOING that???). Still, that's not as bad as "Make It Last Forever", which not only generically samples Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock's "It Takes Two" (which is already a sample), but Ciara's rap during it is pretty much a complete jacking of Rob's first verse. And sorry, but "Promise" is annoying (especially when she repeats any words rhyming with "do").

As other people have mentioned, the four "evolutionary" interludes are also unnecessary. Buy this album only if you're a huge Ciara fan, because The Evolution really isn't much of one.

3 out of 5 stars Ciara has not fully evolved..........2007-07-02

The title of this album implies that Ciara is growing and evolving as an artist. But after listening to both "Goodies" and "The Evolution", I don't see much of a change in one album to the next. Ciara is still relying on pop tunes and dance numbers to make records. Now this isn't necessarily a bad thing, but if you're expecting a difference in this album in comparison to the last, you will be greatly disappointed. This record seems to be lacking any true substance. It seems like Ciara wants to be taken seriously as an r&b artist, but as long as she keeps making these popish songs about dancing and boys, she will never "evolve" into anything more than another pop artist with a semi-decent voice. People who are expecting a smoother more r&b sound won't like the album. But I'm sure dozens of pre-teens will love it.

5 out of 5 stars There hasn't been much art in pop lately..........2007-06-12

"When I listen to the radio I feel like music is so different to what it used to be...and because of that I was inspired to do something different than that." -Ciara-
I couldn't have said it better myself. This album, The Evolution, takes the trite contemporary pop genre and creates art. All too often does one pick up an album nowadays and find about 2 great songs mixed in with about 15 sound-the-same filler tracks. The Evolution is thankfully not like this, I recommend you have a listen if you're even remotely curious, you won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Can't Leave Ciara Alone!.......2007-05-25

Ciara turns it out and flips the script with "evolution". She definately went down the musical path she was supposed to go down. There are alot of tracks that are classic dance and R and B. Ciara could of been another R and B casualty but she rocked the mic and got the beats down like a dj in heat. I like the songs "Can't Leave 'em Alone", "Get Up" and "Make It Last Forever". I wish they turned the beat up on Make It Last Forever, it sounds too low. How can you screw up the "It Takes Two" beat by Rob Base? Otherwise Ciara rocks the house y'all.. go girl.

5 out of 5 stars Very peaceful music.......2007-06-11

I generally work for long hours at my computer and it can be stressful, I read the review for this cd , because one of my customers ( I manage Bolivia Stores at Amazon) wrote a review about this cd same as he wrote a review for one of my teas and I was very intrigued because he is a very religious person that lived in Bolivia with the Peace Corp, well... The price was great and I decided to ordered it...... I just love it, it takes away the stress of a long day !
It sound a bit boring in the beginning but once you get caught for the music is just peace all around!!

4 out of 5 stars Gregorian Chants Review.......2007-05-06

The CD was delivered within the time stated and is as advertized ... good

5 out of 5 stars Answer to a prayer.......2007-04-05

I have been frantically searching for a cd with some of the old Good Friday Gregorian chants I remembered from my childhood. I planned to play it as background music for our Good Friday service at a home for the elderly. I ran a search on Amazon and this was the first cd that popped up. I ordered it, thinking it would probably not arrive in time for the service. What a pleasant surprise to have it in such a short time and at such a low price. Beautiful music that would be worth purchasing at ten times the asking price.

5 out of 5 stars Good Value.......2007-04-04

This collection of chants offers something for various seasons of the church year. The chants are well done, and they are useful for meditation purposes.

4 out of 5 stars A good introduction to Gregorian Chant.......2007-03-29

This is a great way to be introduced to Gregorian chant, both for its quality and its low price.

Martina McBride's fourth RCA album may not be her best work, but it remains a state-of-the-art '90s pop-country album, filled with insouciantly catchy melodies, flawlessly smooth production, and some genuinely memorable material. The 1997 set is balanced between earnestly romantic tunes like "Here in My Heart," midtempo acoustic songs like "Be That Way," and quasi-feminist numbers like "A Broken Wing," which rivals "Independence Day" for her most focused, soulful performance to date. The album might have benefited from more judicious editing: the cutesy opening snippet, the superficial "Keeping My Distance," and the gooey "Valentine" feel out of place on this mostly well crafted, emotionally sung work. --Roy Kasten

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Martina album!.......2007-04-26

I really love this cd, especially the song "A Broken Wing." There is also the opening gem I am Little But Loud.

5 out of 5 stars Dominant Effort.......2006-12-09

If vocal perfection, lush production, and uptempo breakdowns are guilty pleasures, then consider me convicted. This is good clean fun, and good to test the speakers with.

One way to get a "5 Star" rating from me is to make a recording that I think anyone should be able to appreciate. This is such an album. I really believe that if you cannot appreciate this album, you have problems.

5 out of 5 stars Her best...........2005-11-12

In response to the "It's Martina" review from Sam, the beginning and end of this CD was not done by her kids. It was Martina at a very young age.

I always thought that this album was her best. Each of her albums obviously has some great songs, but for me, Evolution was the album that made me the Martina fan that I am.

3 out of 5 stars It's Martina!.......2005-10-16

I only found a couple of songs that I really liked.

Did not like the beginning and end of the CD at all. Must be her kids.

Her last CD was much better.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly The Best.......2005-01-13

I'm a big martina fan. i dont have all her albums, but i do have a decent collection. i think she has an incredible voice, and seems to always find the greatest songs to match it.

This album, in my opinion, is likely her greatest original release. there is not one song that i don't like. and aside from her greatest hits (which i love cuz it has most of my faves), this would be my fave. a very powerful album vocally and lyrically.

i definetly strongly recommend adding this one to your collection.

Album Description

"Underworld" and its accompanying soundtrack albums are perhaps the most thoughtful, valued and respected genre film soundtracks in the proud tradition of "The Matrix" and "The Crow."
As "Underworld: Evolution" continues the saga of the story, so does the new Soundtrack Album continue the tone set musically. On this new album is the exclusive debut solo recording from Chester Bennington, and a new exclusive recording by Puscifer. Chester Bennington is best known as the lead singer of iconic rock band Linkin Park. Likewise Pusicfer who contributed to the first "Underworld" album, is a new outlet for the highly respected, and commercially successful music genius Maynard James Keenan. Maynard is best known as the frontman of both Tool and A Perfect Circle. Also a contributing member of Puscifer is Danny Lohner, the famed former Nine Inch Nails guitarist who is also a sought out songwriter, producer and remixer.
Every song on the album is exclusive to this set at the time of release. In addition to those above are exclusive contributions from such varied and respected artists as My Chemical Romance, Slipknot, Meat Beat Manifesto, Cradle Of Filth as well as some the most exciting new emerging and critically acclaimed bands such as Atreyu, Hawthorn Heights, Senses Fail, Alkaline Trio, Aiden, Lacuna Coil, Trivium and more.
Many of these tracks proudly feature exclusive remixes by some of the most respected and sought after talents such as Danny Lohner, Chris Vrenna, cEvin Key and The Legion Of Doom. Both Danny Lohner and Chris Vrenna bring unique musical experience and sensibilities as former members of seminal rock band Nine Inch Nails. cEvin Key is the co-founder of Skinny Puppy and an established artist in his own right, remixing various artists of stature and releasing many solo albums under different titles. Jack Dangers new exclusive Meat Beat Manifesto song features the artists first use of vocal performance in over six years, which is a rare treat indeed for fans

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Underworld Evolution.......2007-06-23

This was something of a mediocre soundtrack, I thought. The only standout tracks for me were "The Undertaker" by Puscifer and Her Portrait In Black" by Atreyu, other than that, there is nothing special here. Overall, there is nothing memorable besides the two songs mentioned above, none of the other songs or remixes did anything for me, unless you really have to have any of the songs on here, I would recommend saving your money.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!!!Almost Perfect..........2006-11-03

This cd was great!I really enjoyed it.Most of the songs were perfect...and if not perfect they were very close. My favorite would have to be Undertaker(Renholder Remix) by Pusifer.
PS-Does anyone know which song played in the movie trailers?I really liked that one too.

4 out of 5 stars This album was probably better than the movie...ha.......2006-09-03

When I first bought and listened to this album, I thought "hmmm, lots of 'emo-labeled' bands." That didn't stop me from enjoying this soundtrack though. I liked the first two songs on this soundtrack quite a bit at first, but they got pretty old.

However, I loved Hawthorne Heights's remixed "Where Can I Stab Myself In the Ears" (my friend loved it, too), Aiden's "Last Sunrise" (which had a lot of references to Anne Rice's Interview With The Vampire), Lacuna Coil's "Our Truth" (have since became a fan of theirs), Atreyu's "Her Portrait is Black," and Cradle of Filth's "HW2"/"Halloween."

Oh, I also liked Trivium's "Washing Away Me In The Tides," Senses Fail's "Bite To Break Skin," and Slipknot's "Vermillion pt 2."

So, pretty much the producers took good songs and made them even better. I think I just named 8 of the 16 songs as being favorites, not to mention the other songs weren't bad. What does that say to you?

So, I guess that 4 is actually more like a 4.5.

3 out of 5 stars OK,nothing more.......2006-08-09

This is an acceptable rock soundtrack. The songs are unmemorable,
but they suit the film.OK if you like this sort of thing.

3 out of 5 stars @ Shawn.......2006-04-04

The track which was used in the romantik scenes, like the sexscene, is "Eternity And A Day" by Paul Haslinger.

It wouldn't seem possible to do a reasonable survey of the 20th century trumpet playing on one CD, but somehow trumpeter Arturo Sandoval has done just that. Known as an immensely gifted and versatile player, Sandoval tips his hat to such jazzmen as Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, and his mentor Dizzy Gillespie, as well as classical players such as Timofei Dokschizer and Maurice Andre. More than simply playing tunes these trumpeters made famous, Sandoval plays in the style of each trumpeter, even pulling signature quotes from their solos. It's a remarkable feat. With Quincy Jones at the production helm, the music and backing band changes according to the tributee--lush big band swing, bebop, organ jazz, classical, and Latin music are all covered. Surprisingly, there's not as much Latin jazz as you'd expect from the former member of Irakere, but with so much ground covered, this is more of an observation than a complaint. --Tad Hendrickson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars wonderful.......2007-03-01

Cuban born Floridian Arturo Sandoval is one of the most nimble jazz trumpeters to be playing in the modern day. In the 1970s Sandoval befriended the legendary Dizzy Gillespie and toured Cuba and Europe with him. In the 1980s Sandoval sought political asylum from Castro's Cuba at the United Stated Embassy in Rome. This album of tributes is a wonderful bargain, featuring a wide spectrum of styles and standards played by a real master.

I love Sandoval's version of "Round' Midnight" to Miles Davis, inflecting that bluesy Davis sound with ghostlike precision. Nineteen tracks make this disc an unusually generous one, with superb sound quality and musical execution. A nice CD to own, to be sure.

5 out of 5 stars True artistry.......2007-01-23

Arturo shines in this recording that pays homage to great trumpeters of days gone by. Sandoval demonstrates his flexibility and musical knowledge in this recording - and does an amazing job of imitating those great trumpeters, while lending just enough of his own style and artistry to make each piece his own.

A wonderful addition to the trumpeter, or trumpet fan's collection.

5 out of 5 stars Its a Blast.......2007-01-12

If your're a trumpeter or trumpet enthusiast you will love this collection.I think Arturo did a wonderful job, you get a little info on the artiste who did the original pieces. This is great, dizzy, maynard great compilation.

5 out of 5 stars Happy Dixieland to you !.......2005-08-18

I will repeat my review on other Sandoval album:

I always smile when I listen to Arturo Sandoval. His technique is absolutely unbeatable. And he also plays piano with great dexterity!

Here is my mathematical relationship to describe Sandoval's technique:

(Arturo Sandoval / Trumpet) = (Oscar Peterson / Piano)

Phenomenal.

5 out of 5 stars album title says it all.......2005-07-27

I was reading some reviews about this album, and somebody asked the question, why?. Well, I think Arturo not only wanted to pay tributes to legendary trumpeters, (who inspired him to be who he is and play like he plays,) he wanted to show the world how beautiful the trumpet sound and styles have been this last century. It was his idea, no other trumpeter could have come close to what he's done, and he deserves all the credit in the world. The album is filled with some of the greatest titles ever to represent the jazz world and solo trumpet. I highly recommend this CD and satisfaction is guaranteed. Arturo truly is an important link to the evolution of trumpet.

4 out of 5 stars Brings back a lot of memories.........2007-01-19

Boyz II Men will always remind me about the 90's. One of the best R&B groups in my opinion.

As far as this album is concerned, I don't remember all the songs, but 4 seasons of loneliness, doing just fine, and a song for momma stand out in my mind.

II was better in my opinion, but this one was great too.

R&B music is not the same these days. Listening to this now is a breath of fresh air.

2 out of 5 stars Strong in some spots but a mostly medicore follow up to II .......2007-01-04

Evolution was one of the most hyped albums back in 1997 my sophomore year of high school. Naturally I rushed out to get the album and on my first listen I found the album to be weak, especially the fast tracks. Seven years later I re-bought the album and gave it another listen; as an adult I found the album to be stronger than I thought. Boyz II Men like Jodeci before them have always been the strongest with ballads and this is apparent on the singles Doin Just Fine,Never,4 Seasons Of Loneliness. Shawn's writing skills were apparent on the song Doin Just Fine which is one of the strongest songs on the album, however there's is a lot of weak material on the album. Songs such as Girl In The Life Magazine, Baby C'mon and To The Limit all seem forced and aren't song with that much heart. In my opinion truly evolved on their EXCELLENT fourth disc Nathan Michael Shawn Wanya.

3 out of 5 stars Half decent but not bad..........2006-01-02

Evolution is a nice album. It somewhat begins off with ballads and moves on to uptempo tracks. The uptempos are a mess beccause P. Diddy produced them.Babyface, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis and the Boyz did a wonderful job at producing their own tracks but the others were all over the place.

5 out of 5 stars Their best album.......2005-10-23

I loved this cd of theirs. This has some damn beautiful songs on it. Their first cd was great but they got so much better with this. Four Seasons of Lonliness and Doin Just Fine are such amazing songs. One song that always makes me cry and I can only guess it's because it's so good, is A Song For Mama. I keep going back to this cd often. It is a favourite of mine in general. The guys harmonies are terrific and the soul here is superb. Get this if you don't already have it, because it's such a smooth and chilled cd, you'll love it too.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful, romantic and addictive album...........2004-09-14

Those of you who read my last review of "II" (their other album) will know that I am a big fan of the Boyz. I still am, by the way (no shame in that, right?). This CD has some of the most beautiful, most romantic, and catchy R&B songs I have ever had the pleasure to listen to!

The four part harmony has never sounded sweeter than it does on the tracks you will find on "Evolution." "Doin' Just Fine" is a post-relationship song about getting back on your feet again after a bad break-up. It is sang with expression, grace and the smooth style we have come to expect from Nathan Morris, Shawn Stockman, Michael McCary and Wanya Morris. "Never," "4 Seasons of Loneliness," and "Girl in the Life Magazine" glide over a beautifully luscious arrangement of instruments and the smooth crooning. Then, comes one of the biggest hits from this album. That song is, of course, "A Song For Mama" (from the SOUL FOOD soundtrack).

Two of the most underappreciated tracks on this album that I really like a lot are "Baby C'Mon" (produced by Sean Puffy Combs), and "Come On," which features guest Missy Elliot and was co-written with Sting.

Check it out! You will be happy you did.
