I am so happy to finally have these recordings on CD. These songs were a fond, but distant memory for almost 20 years, as I was only able to find them on an LP. Thanks for a priceless gift!

Sammi deserves better.......2007-05-29

The sound on this CD is absolutely wretched, the worst sounding commercial CD I ever owned. First of all, it's from a not very good vinyl copy. It's horribly off-centered in places, and very distorted in others. Secondly, the CD sounds like it was either pressed from a very low bit-rate MP3, or it was subjected to some severe noise reduction. Whatever the case, the sound is all muffled and swishy. My scratchy vinyl copy sounds much better than this.

Sammi Smith was a wonderful singer with a beautiful, soulful voice. Her first album ranks among my all-time favorites by anyone. Varese managed to put out a nice sounding compiliation, (from real tapes, it sounds like). I can't understand why her first album doesn't get the same treatment. Instead, we have this abomination.

She deserves much better than this.

5 stars for the music, 0 stars for the sound.

I am completely pleased with this CD. Sammi Smith has the natural ability to sell a song in a soft mellow voice without the usual high nasal twang of many of the other female singers. I like the quiet pathos.

Her rendition of Chris K's "Help me make it through the night" became an anthemn for many of us in the 70s. This album is a historical masterpiece for which every country, folk, and popular music fan must have a copy. I had forgotten how haunting and emotional "Saunders Ferry Lane" is. Thanks to current technology her music will live for ever.

Originally released in 1971, the album "Help Me Make It Through The Night" peaked at #49 on the Black Albums chart and features Smith's rendition of Kris Kristofferson's song as the title track.

With the backup ofsome of the best sidemen in the business, whoever produced this album has produced one of the worst soul jazz albums I've come across. I gave it two complete listens and it now sits promenently on my pile of give-aways.It didn't even make it to my pile of traders. String sections can sometimes add to the quality of music, but on this album they don't belong. A terrible album by a good player.Stay away from it.

This is an album I grew up with since I was 4years old. The days when black people used milk crates for coffee tables. This album bought me so much comfort I remember it today. My mother has a original copy with little skips here and there. Mr.Crawford if you are reading,this album has and still does HELP ME MAKE IT THROUGH THE NIGHT. I thank God for inspiring you to make this timeless album.
