Album Description
Silva Alan & His Celestial Communications Orchestra. Super session recorded in Paris on August 17, 1969. Alan Silva brought together many of the top free jazz players of the time in an amazing 11-piece ensemble featuring Grachan Moncur III, Archie Shepp, Anthony Braxton, Dave Burrell, Leroy Jenkins and Malachi Favors. As a result, this is a very free record and a historical document of Pan-African music. Limited to 1500 copies, remastered & packaged in a miniature LP sleeve. Sunspots. 2003.
Customer Reviews:
yeah, it's a blowout.......2007-02-28
The other reviewer is telling the truth. It's a freaky, circa 69 blowout inlcuding a lot of American expats from the avant jazz circles floating around Paris in those days. The thing is, just to make a point, if you happen to love Coltrane's Ascension, well then, ... I just got my copy of Luna Surface and played it on a little box at low volume ... getting a satisfying ambient mix ... and I found this CD to be absolute pure joy. I started to smirk after about five seconds. It's the most transcendent soothing freaked out sound I've ever heard, well maybe except for Ascension. So if you don't know what I mean, maybe avoid this, but if you know what I mean, "forget about it" as they say around here.
Free Jazz Blow Out.......2004-02-03
If you are into really avant-garde free jazz such as late period Archie Shepp and Cecil Taylor then you will definitely be into this cd. Otherwise its a really tough listen. It takes some getting used to. I gave it four stars on the quality of the musicianship but the thing to understand about this music is that it has no shape or form. That said it is a little less grating than say, Peter Brotzmann and has its moments of eloquence. It has Archie Shepp, the underrecorded Grachan Moncur III, Anthony Braxton and members of the Art Ensemble of Chicago. So there is a lot to be said for this recording. Just approach it with care and an open mind.
