5 out of 5 stars A Duet of Genius.......2001-07-25

Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass often dueted in live venues during the 1970s and 1980s. Whatever the quality of voice Ella might have been in on any given evening, something magical always happened when her trio or band would leave the stage and she and Joe would go it alone. I do not believe any two jazz performers had the sympatico musical understanding of one another as these two had. I was fortunate to have known Joe in his last years, and he himself marvelled at the chemistry between them. My only regret about this CD is that it is not a 2-CD set, as there are literally dozens of such live recordings available for release.

The gem here is "I'm Beginning to See the Light." It was the most often repeated duet they did, yet the studio version (which Joe assured me happened more than once) was never released. Grab yourself a bit of jazz magic and buy this one!

5 out of 5 stars Elly Ameling now more available .......2007-03-07

I had a 33 rpm album of Elly Ameling singing Schubert lieder accompanied by piano and clarinet at times. It was one of my all time favorite albums so I have been disappointed that I have not been able to find it anywhere on CD.

Now I can just buy this excellent collection. So much music in one place! Since I confess that I am far from an expert on the rest of her records, I look forward to hearing her sing many other styles and composers.

I think it is silly to criticize her for not singing Wagner, for example, since her version of many songs, especially lieder, are nothing short of sublime. I would like to hear how many Wagnerians sing Schubert or Mozart.

I doubt if they could approach the skill and soul with which Elly Ameling sings lieder.

5 out of 5 stars Delight in every note.......2006-03-10

To speak as briefly as possible about this superb collection from an equally superb singer, what can I say but that Ms Ameling possessed a voice that shone with radiant warmth and star-like shimmer? And unlike many another light lyric soprano, Elly Ameling was possessed of a very high standard of musicianship, considerable intelligence, and a sort of immediate charm that captivates the listener.

So many of her recordings have still to be released on CD, but this 5CD-set goes some way towards remedying the situation. The repertoire spans a wide variety - French mèlodies, Lieder, light-hearted "sentimental" songs, Bach, etc. - and in each piece, Ms Ameling shows that quality of pearl-like beauty. It is a beauty which is also extremely pretty - a beauty of voice that is never overbearing and over-ripe, but perfectly blossoming upon the tree of inspiration.

I recommend this set unequivocally. It truly is sheer delight.

5 out of 5 stars While they last..........2005-05-17

Elly Ameling held the quiet stage for recitals of great artistry and dignity for several decades and sadly most of the enormously successful CDs of her long career output are now unavailable. For those who have little access to the documentation of this very special artist, this box set is a must. It is a compilation of many of her recordings with differing accompanists, conductors, orchestras and composers. And while not all of the choices for inclusion here would be considered her greatest moments, there are enough works that sustain the warm memories of the little Dutch hausfrau who quietly and simply paid homage to composers with her clear and intelligent musicianship and radiant voice.

Ameling was known to schedule recitals of Schubert cycles and songs and in the afterglow of her performance answer the demand for curtain calls with additional Schubert melodies: she gifted her audience with the dignity of honoring a composer's works by maintaining the focus on that composer rather than milk the audience with the usual encore applause-getting favorites. And special moments such as quietly and pensively strolling through the orchestra during the Mahler 4th symphony to arrive at front stage, unapplauded, just in time for the opening line of her singing - those simple homage to composers and collaborators made her selfless manner endearing to audiences.

Despite the fact that Ameling's voice was on the small side she was always able to muster the projection to carry her message solidly in context with an orchestra. Yes, other more famous singers have recorded Ravel's quintessentially French SHEHERAZADE, but few have the perfection of diction and aura of mystery that Ameling maintained. Whether singing with piano or orchestra, or interpreting Bach, Mozart, Handel, and Vivaldi with the same degree of involvement as Brahms and Schumann and Schubert, Elly Ameling spanned a career that engendered passionate commitment from her fans. And this boxed set is a pocket full of memories to be treasured. Buy it before this too becomes unavailable. Grady Harp, May 05

5 out of 5 stars Treasures From a Treasure.......2004-09-25

Treasures from a Treasure.

Ameling, one of the world's most beloved recitalists is captured here in a 5 CD collection offering some of her most beautiful recordings of song. While we are used to her perfection in songs of Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Schumann, Faure and Hahn, an added joy is her "pop" side, tackling - without a whiff of pretension, Porter, Kern, Gershwin, Ellington, et al.

What an absolute joy it is listening to this amazing artist sing these songs with an almost uncanny natural ease. There is no resorting to a "pop" voice and yet most of these pop standards songs sound as though they could have been written for her. Clean attacks, sometimes a bit of the pop technique of hanging on to a consonant longer than a classical artist normally would shows an appreciation and understanding of the style. Still, there is never once a compromise of her vocal beauty.

I like the way the songs have been arranged for her voice in that she sort of sings them clean, unaffected in the first half and then lets loose and kinda "swings" with it adding embellishments but never really changing her voice (Price, von Stade and other favorite singers of mine seem to have always added a breathy quality to much of their crossover material.)

Ameling doesn't resort to trying to "let her hair down" or get down and dirty, but rather the honest with which she approaches every one of these songs shows how much she enjoys singing them and her style is as refreshing as stumbling onto a cool spring on a sweltering summer's afternoon. A wonderful surprise.

5 out of 5 stars More than fully earned praise for an exceptional singer........2003-07-15

As I had the privilige of hearing this outstanding Lied-singer during her long career in Holland and being the proud possessor of almost all her recordings, I cannot but fully agree with the professional and joyful review of Mr. Robert Holliston from Victoria, B.C. Canada.
Yes, it is unbelievable that of about the 150 recordings Mrs. Ameling made during her long career (for the greater part of course on the 'oldfashioned' LP's, as well as the innumerable Dutch live-recorded radio-concerts), so few CD's have been released.
Speaking of tradition: it was the page-turner of the Wigmore Hall in London who told Mrs. Ameling after her first recital in this hall, that she reminded him of Elisabeth Schumann. (And he certainly didn't mean her looks only!)
For those who are eager to hear her singing Ravel's Shéhérazade (just one example of stirring imagination combined with her Art of Singing) I can tell you that Philips released a 2-box CD of this work in 1999, combined with Debussy's La Damoiselle élue and a compilation of French mélodies, i.e. Debussy, Fauré, Duparc, Satie. One of the gems is Caplet's Le Corbeau et le Renard which even make children, who know the fables of La Fontaine, revel in the singing of the quarrelsome birds....
Her brilliant accompanyist is Rudolf Jansen. Let us cherish great artists in their art!

5 out of 5 stars Pure instrumental magic!.......2007-06-13

The purchase of this CD was highly recommended by a fellow member of Yahoo's "Beautiful Instrumentals Group." Containing several formerly unavailable on CD selections, this album is pure instrumental magic! For example, some of you may recall Monte Kelly's mid-1950s rendition of "Tropicana," from the LP of the same name, and other songs from that collection. They are here at last! I have been waiting since CDs came out to see "Tropicana" and many other "magical instrumentals" from the US and Europe finally appear on CD, and this is the first in a series of new CDs produced by Nick Acquaviva to hit the market that feature these wonderful instrumentals. I highly recommend that anyone who loves classic instrumental check this and the entire series out. You will not be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars No frills here, just great vocal female jazz.......2004-04-30

As for me, the drawbacks are the lack of liner notes and amount of recorded time on each cd. Though there are 3 cd's for the price of one the total time is @ 120 minutes.
Still, there is alot of fine music from Julie London here, remembering that most of the compositions back then clocked in between the 2-3 min mark.So here you have 45 tracks! That's only 5 less than the other fantastic 2cd set 'The VERY BEST OF JULIE LONDON' (which has excellent liner notes) but costs more.
The choice is yours between the two differnt collections,...for me, I saved the money and really could care less about Ms London's background info (which I can look up on the internet anyway). Like the previous reviewer, a reserved 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Five Stars--But A Reserved Five Stars.......2004-04-13

First--This is a three disk collection of Julie London singing standards. If you have to ask about Julie London--then there's nothing I can tell you to explain about Ms. London. Julie London is Julie London. End of story...

But what made Ms. London so fabulous was her voice: clear and beautiful--and so smooth, smooth to the point that instrumental support offen detracts from her singing. Her best work (in my uninformed opinion) was with a bass on one side, and a soft trumpet on the other. Forget Reagan; Let Julie be Julie! That is why, pound for pound, I think "About the Blues" and "Wild, Cool, and Swinging" are probably better albums than this collection. On those albums, the instrumentation is kept to a minimum, and Julie at her maximum. "Sophisticated Lady," on the other hand, is more of a "big band" style.

When Miles Davis was putting "Kind of Blue" together, he told an interviewer that he (Miles) did not care for where jazz was heading at that time; Miles thought the music was too "thick." Sophisticated Lady suffers from some of that "thickness." While no one would confuse Davis & London, the instrumentation on "Sophisticated Lady" does sometimes detract from Ms. London's real strength--the music is occasionally "too thick."

That said--This is still a three CD set of Julie London tearing up the pea patch with "Days of Wine & Roses," "I'm in the Mood for Love," "Love for Sale," and "I Got It Bad." I can't speak for Ms. London--but I've really got it bad......

Sure, there's better CDs than this set--**not** "Julie London Sings the Standards" nor "Time Enough for Love (Best of Julie)," because most the the songs on those albums are here--but if Ms. London touches your heart, this is thirty bucks well spent. And if Ms. London doesn't grab you--There's always Marylin Manson I suppose.......

Duke Ellington was at the height of his popularity during the 1940s; at the same time, he was enjoying a creative peak and fronting one of the finest organizations he'd ever assembled, including trumpeters Cootie Williams, Ray Nance, and later Rex Stewart and Harold "Shorty" Baker, trombonists Lawrence Brown, Tricky Sam Nanton, and Tommy Dorsey, saxophonists Johnny Hodges and Ben Webster, Jimmy Blanton and Oscar Pettiford on bass, and drummers Sonny Greer and Sid Catlett. The material here includes Ellington's famous versions of "Take the 'A' Train," "Caravan," "The 'C' Jam Blues," "Mood Indigo," and "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)." --John Swenson

5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction.......2001-04-22

Duke Ellington's output was so massive, and so excellent, that starting an Ellington libary can be intimidating to the novice fan. This is a great place to begin. These tracks, recorded over five incredible years, show Ellington at one the many peaks in his career. Every track is a classic, and the diversity of the styles give a glimpse of how inventive this man was. It's a well-priced way to get a toe in the water, but be warned that you won't be able to stop here.

      5 out of 5 stars A must-have for music lovers!.......2006-05-24

Julie London was like the female Sinatra. She was one cool, swingin' lady. Her original concept albums are brilliant and much more interesting to collect than the many compilation CDs available of her songs. It is much better to hear the songs in the original context, and mood concept, than jumbled together with songs from other albums. "Sophisticated Lady" (1962) and "For the Night People" are rare albums and sound better than ever remastered on CD.

"Sophisticated Lady" is, just as the title implies, an album of very lush, sophisticated jazz standards that Julie sings with a full orchestra. The arrangements are not the most original, but suit the material and Julie's voice well enough. There are some great songs in this set, such as "Bewitched" and "If I Should Lose You" (one of the better renditions of the song).

The reason to buy this CD, however, is for Julie's 1966 classic, "For the Night People." It is one of her best concept albums, full of moody, sultry torch songs. Julie's renditions of "Am I Blue?" and "God Bless the Child" are unique and memorable. It is said in the original liner notes that Julie hand-picked all the songs on this particular album, and it shows. This is the Julie sound at its best.

Overall, you get two Julie albums on one CD: the good "Sophisticated Lady" and the great "For the Night People." You can't go wrong buying this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Classy albums from a classy singer.......2005-04-27

Julie recorded many high quality albums in the fifties and sixties. This set features all the tracks from her 1962 album, Sophisticated lady, and her 1966 album, For the night people. . Julie knew what she was good at and recorded songs that suited her. The two albums here were typical of Julie's sixties music.
This collection is filled with wonderful songs from the Great American Songbook. Two of them (Sophisticated lady, I got it bad and that ain't good) are by Duke Ellington. Bewitched is a Rodgers and Hart song that has been recorded by many fine singers. I think of it as a Doris Day song, but Julie's version is lovely. Frank Sinatra had a huge 1945 hit with Saturday night is the loneliest night of the week. He had another huge 1945 hit with Dream, but the Pied Pipers topped the charts with their version. Tommy Dorsey topped the charts in 1940 with I'll never smile again. Ethel Waters topped the charts in 1929 with Am I blue.

There are many obscure songs here too, including some by famous composers. Among them are Make it another old-fashioned please (Cole Porter), If I should lose you, Here's that rainy day and When the sun comes out.

If you enjoy Julie's music, this will provide with different songs in a similar style to her other albums.

4 out of 5 stars Sultry session from London soars.......2000-02-25

This two albums on one CD set finds Julie London at her sultriest and steamiest. Sophisticated Lady, 1962, contains wonderful versions of Remind Me and Make it Another Old Fashioned Please as well as London's hubby-penned (Bobby Troup) Where Am I to Go. For The Night People, 1966, scores with Am I Blue, Mercer's Dream and Here's That Rainy Day. It's wonderful to have these recordings available.

4 out of 5 stars Two very nice late nite make-out albums on 1 CD!.......1999-10-01

These 2 very lush Julie London LP's are combined on one CD. Londin sticks mostly to jazz standards, and sounds very appealing on both sessions. Highly recommended.
