Editorial Reviews
Gathering together elements of R&B, soul and pop, Brown takes his cue from the likes of Sam Cooke, Lou Rawls and Jackie Wilson, his idols. But chances are he doesn't do it their way.
"I never learned to read music; I just couldn't do it," he said. "I hear a particular melody in my head and just go with it."
With the ubiquitous sunglasses, Brown often has been mistaken for Ray Charles or Stevie Wonder, but his blindness isn't a stick - just a fact of life.
"I played in nightclubs in East St. Louis. I worked with Ike and Tina (Turner); that was where all the musicians played in the early days."
Throughout his musical career, Brown also has shared the stage with Little Richard, The Coasters, Lou Rawls, Etta James and Jackie Wilson.
Treasures of Love,Nat Brown,Jannay,Combining soul, pop, nd R&B, the singer, and saxman is well liked for his smooth styles on classic tunes.,Jazz-Pop

My favorite album. English church music at its finest........2005-10-06
The grand tradition of English music.......2005-09-23
--Music--
This is all unaccompanied music, sung in a cathedral chapel acoustically suited for such music. The first disc has four primary sections: Music of the Latin Rite; Music of the Reformation; Music of the Restoration; and Anglican Revival and the twentieth century. The most famous composers in English music history -- Tallis, Byrd, Gibbons -- combine with later masters such as Purcell, Stanford, Howells, Walton, Britten and Vaughan Williams to form a truly masterful collection. These are anthems, hymns and other liturgical pieces that have remained important in Anglican worship, and can be often heard in situ on Sundays around the world. However, the Cambridge Singers bring their special music talent to the task, producing a good standard bearer for music of the English Church.
On the second disc, there are six Latin motets, set by composers such as Taverner, Howells, Stanford, Vaughan Williams, Philips and Dering. Anthens and Introits include notables Tomkins and Purcell, and lesser-known composers such as Amner, Bairstow and Goss. Hymns span the range from old to modern, including a hymn by John Rutter himself. The disc ends with three prayer settings, including one by the underappreciated John Sheppard, and another from William Harris, whose hymn serves as the title to the companion disc. These anthems and hymns show a powerful range of music, yet show a consistent tone also that makes it rather distinctive of the music of the English church.
The group's power and grace is second to none, particularly when singing this kind of music in a place such as Ely Cathedral, arguably the most natural of settings possible.
--Liner Notes--
The notes for this recording include the titles and words of each anthem or hymn. The notes for each piece also includes brief biographical information of the composer, and unique information about each work, when particular composers are represented more than once. One thing conspicuously missing is much biographical information about John Rutter, or any descriptive information about the Cambridge Singers apart from the most basic of information.
--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.
--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. Many are former members of the choir of Clare College and other Cambridge collegiate choirs (hence the name, Cambridge Singers). In the quarter-century since the founding, the Cambridge Singers have produced an impressive body of recordings.

Album Description
Shaker music is a unique body of American sacred folk music, created by eighteen American Shaker communities over a period of one hundred and forty years (1780-1920). This rich tradition of song continues to serve the Shaker community in the twenty-first century because it embodies their history, records the testimony of Shakers "who have gone before," articulates the religious principles on which Shakerism is founded, and reflects the faith of the contemporary community. Shaker music was created and nurtured in communities that prized isolation from worldly ways. Shaker melodies, although related to the larger tradition of Anglo-American folk songs, are not bound by their form, tonality, melodic or rhythmic structure.
The Enfield Shaker singers are a vocal ensemble of adults and children devoted to the study and performance of Shaker music. The group is open to all without audition, and is made up of both trained musicians and amateur singers. We draw heavily on the repertoire received or composed in the two societies that were the New Hampshire BishopricCanterbury and Enfield. Since the New Hampshire societies enriched their repertoire with songs from all the other Shaker communities, they also sing songs of the New York, Maine, Massachusetts, Ohio and Kentucky Shakers.
The Enfield Shaker Singers are drawn to Shaker spirituals that illuminate Shaker communal values and broaden our definitions of the sacred. The songs included on this recording illustrate some of the many ways music served Shaker communities. Most Shaker song texts are theologically direct, emotionally honest, and expressive of our shared humanity.
On this recording we offer thirty-nine songs we have come to love. Some have special meaning for individuals. We associate others with a particular singer in the group, or an occasion when it was sung. Each song offers us slightly different insights into Shaker aspiration, and Shaker faith. We hope that, through this recording, others will also come to love and sing them too. Mary Ann Haagen, from the liner notes

Tomorrow's American Treasures.......2006-01-29
Tomorrow's American Treasures
(Sit-N-Spin Records)
Michael Holland, though immersed in the heart and soul of American (cosmic) music, proves esoteric in the cogitation of his music. With Tomorrows American Treasures Holland employs the tools of classic American Appalachia, folk wanderlust, jazz's improvisational freedom, and poetic romanticism in this collection of songs that delicately caresses the depths of the human spirit. He uses archetypal imagery and language in conjunction with musical form in a way that fosters a contemporary relevance different from those of today's ill-pegged "freak folk" genre. His embrace of the historic provides a foundation and validity for his honesty and sensitivity to the human condition.
The Big Fat Gap bluegrass band, comprised of some of central North Carolina's hottest pickers and players, is perfectly suited for Holland's intention and their collaboration is dead-on in its execution and creativity delivered here. Mandolin and fiddle lend buoyant optimism to "Pretty Polly." "Crystal Meth Freak from California," a song I started my day with for about four weeks, delivers the mindscape of the "freak" and is marked by a most oddly befitting keyboard solo.
The familiar conjoined with the abstract is a construct Holland uses without fail, with the exception of the narrative "Look Out for King Heartache." "Lighten up Angel" gently summons the allure, tenderness, and tone of Van Morrison ("Into the Mystic") and exudes the thematic message and sentiment of assurance and hope-"Tonight we're sleeping under the bridges but who knows what tomorrow may bring." The record's unity is augmented by the intimacy of the close-knit, live recording. The perfectly mapped sequencing provides a connectedness that delivers a rejuvenation and awakening to the essential message of optimism and hope relevant in the record's entirety. There is a timeliness to Tomorrow's American Treasures that could be overlooked by the casual listener who might not recognize that this is not just another folk/bluegrass album. Michael Holland has succeeded in creating something rooted in the historic that has special significance in the now.

PURE GOLD! GLORIOUS SINGING, GLORIOUS MUSIC!.......2001-06-13
I have long had a love of operetta but found that there were not a large number of recordings to be found in that genre. So much the happier was I for discovering this diverse collection of operetta standards. True serendipity!
Marilyn Hill Smith and Peter Morrison deliver thrilling renditions of the operetta masters. We hear selections from Johann Strauss, Lehar, Kalman, Herbert, Oscar Straus, Millocker, Messager, Stolz and Tauber, to name a few. There are the often sung showpieces and lesser known songs which are blended well and add diversity. One glorious song sets the stage for the next.
With Miss Smith's crystal, velvety soprano and Mr. Morrison's rich, romantic baritone, the production leaves nothing left to be desired--except for more of the same musical charm.
The current offering is a serendipity in itself. It has the three original CDs delivered in one package as a two CD set. I have a modest collection of operetta recordings but I would be hard pressed to name one more satisfying than this generous 36 track package.
