There's an old quote of St. Theresa's that goes something like, "More tears are shed over answered prayers than those that remain unanswered." In other words, be careful what you wish for--you just might get it. Don McLean, like any other singer-songwriter, no doubt wanted a hit, or some degree of success. "American Pie" gave him that and more. McLean's ode to Buddy Holly began with a folky intro that sounded like a protest song. Almost nine minutes later the song finally ends. Sure the song's poetic, sure it's a touching tribute, and sure, it's undeniably a classic. But it also became the bane of McLean's existence for many years as it was the only one of his songs that people wanted to hear. American Pie the album sold well on the strength of the title track, and even propelled the comparatively weak "Vincent" into the Top 20. A fine release rooted in folk, American Pie is a classic, whether anyone actually pays attention to the other songs or not. The 2003 reissue includes two bonus tracks"Mother Nature" and "Aftermath." --Steve Gdula

A Masterpiece of Spirituality in Rhythm and Verse.......2007-05-24
Don McLean's great use of rhythm and verse make this album a true treasure.
His songs remain unforgettable. His style completely distinct and seperated from his contemporaries.
Lastly, the emotion, his own emotions are captured so precisely and sweetly poetic.
It would be a shame if today's youth were not exposed to this collection of his songs.
Bring back the memories.......2007-05-12
I still have the original LP!!! I love listening to McLean's on a clear sounding CD... What I like the most is that my teenager boys sing along to American Pie.
Great Classic Rock.......2007-05-07
I'm glad someone thought to release this album on cd since my turntable broke a long time ago!
One of the BEST OF THE BEST-LaLaLaLa LOVE IT!.......2007-03-29
This album is totally underrated and to some, forgotten. It is not only a classic for the gifted Don McLean; it is a heartfelt piece of poetry that you will listen to over and over again. I find some nuance, some depth of understanding and musical beauty each time I listen.
Songs like EMPTY CHAIRS, VINCENT, and even SISTER FATIMA are poetry set to music, and life experiences that most of us can identify with.
BRAVO, DON McLEAN - You still rock after more than 30 years!
Empty Chairs.......2007-03-12
I was so strongly in agreement with an earlier review of The Don McLean "American Pie" Album which I have loved for almost as many years as its initial release. The song "Empty Chairs is a forever favorite and also brings a tear as often as I allow myself to experience the strong emotion of its heartfelt performance. I missed the cover by Garth Brooks and I'm very sure it must have been first rate.

Hello, there is one song that is all instrumental. It's got a "surfer" kinda vibe to it . .it almost sounds like Dick Dale. Do any of you know the name of that song that is being plaid when "sh%t break" is running through the school trying to make it to the men's room? If you know this song please post it i've been searching for it for the longest time.

With a gross-out factor befitting the turn of the millennium, 1999's American Pie succeeded by updating the classic American teen coming-of-age comedy in more ways than one. And if Jason Biggs foregoes his pie à la Jimmy for mere college high jinks in the sequel, the music here bounds along in a buzz-chord, double-time rush as if the gang never left high school. Dominated by the power-punk pop that's become the staple of contemporary mainstream rock, this album serves as an oft-loopy sampler. Fresh tracks from Green Day, Alien Ant Farm, American Hi-Fi, and Lucia are tempered by inviting, change-of-pace cuts from Angela Ammons, 3 Doors Down, and Oleander. Uncle Kracker's new "(I'm Gonna) Split This Room in Half" cuts through the punky bluster with some welcome hip-hop swagger, while "Phoebe Cates" by Fenix*TX pays amped-up homage to the much-lusted-after '80s teen queen. But as buoyant as the soundtrack is, it's also hard not to note that much of the music often teeters on the edge of cliché; indeed, the opening Blink 182/Green Day/Left Front Tire/American Hi-Fi salvo of tracks might sound to the uninitiated like they were all performed by the same band--oh well, at least it wasn't 'N Sync or the Backstreet Boys. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
"Bruise" by Oleander (please help me locate!).......2007-07-15
Hi,
I loved this soundtrack and would have given 5 stars if only "Bruise" by Oleander (the song they play after the party when all the couples - and triples in Stifflers case! - are in bed) was included. I know that this is a rare B side but surely they know that people are going to want access to a song when it is in a movie, so why not make the thing available? There are so many movies with good music that is either left out of the OST or cannot be obtained in any other way. Another example is the song "Is it hot in here?" which is in the movie Mystic Pizza. Anyway, if anyone knows of a download site for Bruise or has a CD they could burn me a copy of etc. I would LOVE it. Please email me at 87311206@scholar.uws.edu.au if you have any info.
Thanks,
Ricky

The song you are looking for is Bruise - Oleander. I havn't found it on any CDs though. You may have to try "other" methods. Good luck!
Why do none of these soundtracks have the songs by Oleander?
Great Movie, Okay soundtrack.......2006-04-10
The soundtrack overall is really good, its a good compilation of teenage music and is always fun to listen to on a roadtrip and whatnot, the only problem i have with this cd is that a lot of the music in the movie isn't on the cd. Can anyone tell me what the song is that they play throughout the movie but most importantly at the very end after the party is over and its the next morning and Kevin and Vicky are sitting at the table with the scrap book and Stiflers little brother is walking out with the XXX movies in his hand, and then it shows everyone that slept with eachother in bed (Jim,Michelle/Stifler,Lesbos/Oz,Heather) if anyone knows this song right a review for the cd and leave the answer in ur review thankyou very much
Missing all the best.......2005-05-20
The sound score really contributed to the appeal of this movie. Numerous scenes were so perfectly complimented by the choices of songs; I was very impressed.
So why did none of the GOOD songs end up on this CD?

Camper Van Beethoven's first record with bona fide crossover appeal, 1989's Key Lime Pie (Virgin), brought the celebrated indie band into the, ahem, lime light. Not surprising since Key Lime Pie joined David Lowery's playful, ironic songwriting, Morgan Fichter's soaring violin, and Dennis Henderson's artful production. While the percussive cover "Pictures of Matchstick Men" and the chugging "Jack Ruby" have historically gotten the most attention on this record, Camper Van Beethoven gems like "(I Was Born in a) Laundromat" and "All Her Favorite Fruit" should not be overlooked. A classic. --Nick Heil
Customer Reviews:
4.5 Stars . . . alternating between heavy and light.......2006-08-27
I bought this disc when it was released and actually had the pleasure of seeing CVB on the ensuing tour in Athens, GA. This disc is darker, deeper and seems more personal than some of CVB's earlier material which ventured (in a good way) into, as I believe D. Lowery himself said, "absurdist rock". This disc stands the test of time and still sounds great today with standout tracks like Borderline, All Her Favorite Fruit and Sweethearts which I consider one of CVB's very best songs. It's a classic album that was critically underappreciated when it was first released. As others have noted CVB was one of the many bands that really established 80's college radio that set the stage for today's indie rock scene. This was their last disc but in retrospect I believe their most creative. I'd agree that it's not their most challenging or "envelope-pushing" as some of the earlier material.
Several tracks on this disc suggest that the songs were written during the brutal heat of summer (June, The Humid Press of Days, Favorite Fruit with "the heat drifts towards a line of trees", and obviously Come On Darkness "let the pavement cool"). I recommend that once this becomes a favorite disc of yours (as it is mine) you give it a listen on the hottest day of the year - it will really make sense. At the same time the heart of the disc and the middle set of songs obviously represent a break-up - I remember at the time (a really hot Athens summer) my girlfriend and I were also calling it quits and I think that's one of the many reasons that this disc has stuck in my psyche all of these years later.
Also if you are a Cracker fan who never really listened to CVB, I urge you to give this one a try.
some of the best songs ever written.......2006-08-02
For my money, this is the best Camper Van Beethoven album and a serious candidate for best rock album of all time. Musically, on other CVB albums like "My Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart," I personally find the Balkan element running through much of the music a bit irritating, and I think the replacement of Jonathan Segel by Morgan Fichter was a brilliant move, as the violin work on this album is stunning - the solo on "All Her Favorite Fruit" is unforgettable. I also don't think the level of brilliance of the lyrics on the other albums comes up to the standard of this one (though in this department I do recommend the first album by David Lowery's next band, CrackerCracker). The lyrics are really stand-out on this album, some of the best ever written, and I think comparisons with T.S. Eliot in the case of songs like "June" and "All Her Favorite Fruit" are no exaggeration. The underclass humor of "When I Win the Lottery" can't be beat (and for more in this vein, check out "Mr. Wrong" on the aforementioned Cracker album). (David Lowery's lyrical approach to the denizens of America's underbelly is more humorous, but still the best stuff this side of Tom Waits.)
Moody, Ironic, and Tasteful melodies - Excellent.......2006-04-28
More Like 4.5 Stars. It is not a perfect record, but it is very unique and creative. Key Lime Pie is slower than the albums before this one. Dave Lowery writes witty and ironic lyrics which can make you think, laugh, or actually picture the scene for yourself. The violin is absolutely soothing, even on the raunchy The Humid Press of Days. Borderline and I was born in a Laundromat are two best cuts. When I win the Lottery is down right hilarious. This album will take time, so don't make your conclusion after the first or second listen. Let Key Lime Pie seep into your bloodstream and enjoy. Dave Lowery and CVB are genius! I will have the pleasure of purchasing New Roman Times when I get the chance. Excellent!
You got to be kidding.......2006-01-06
I don't know who wrote all these raving reviews, but after buying into their hype and buying the CD and listening to it, I'm wondering who paid these guys off. Not bad songs technically, just something you'll never play more than once. No glimpses of genius; no euphoria; no whispers of one's primordial soul to rememberence; no passion. Better to donate to the Red Cross than to waste your $ on this one...
its good.......2005-05-10
I give it a four because when I first heard it I really enjoyed it although I dont listen to it much lately I think I will have to after writing this review!! It has a very unique sound and It wont dissapoint.

Original "Castles".......2006-08-27
American Pie and Other Hits contains the original version of "Castles in the Air". If you seek this 1970 version of "Castles" you will not be disappointed.
If you are looking for the full length version of "American Pie", this CD falls short.
Great artist, but unforgivable CD error.......2005-06-25
I was furious when I bought this CD! To add to what has already been said, I owned the 45 way back when, and there was NOT a "single" version of the song "American Pie". The whole 8+ minutes was on the 45 record, unedited, but split between side A and side B (and labeled part one and part two). Only part one, the FIRST HALF of the song, is on this CD. Really unbelievable. The rest of the songs are really good, but, as has been said, don't even bother listening to the title track!
Only A Piece Of The P:ie.......2005-02-28
If you are looking for the song American Pie, skip this cd. Why anyone would release a cd with only part of this song is beyond me. Go figure.
An inexpensive CD for priceless songs.......2005-02-21
Yes, this is not a definitive collection--and American Pie is not its full length--but look at the cost for so many other greats! I bought it solely for "And I Love You So" and am satisfied. DM performs that song better than anyone else. For those who love romance it should be a staple. "If We Try" is wonderful as a "getting to know you" song. "Everyday" is a great version of the standard--and an upbeat message to someone you're loving more and more all the time.
Way back in the 80s I was talking to a very good and versatile lounge performer. He said he hated being asked for American Pie, Castles in the Air, Vincent and other McLean songs because they took way too much talent and effort--and he knew he didn't have it at that level. He said, "I can fake a lot of others, but nothing of Don McLean's." Even a limited--but reasonably priced--McLean CD will prove his wisdom.
Disappointing.......2004-01-27
I bought this CD just before a long car ride, just for the song American Pie. Imagine my frustration when I discovered that the track I wanted was cut short! The reason I give this two stars, instead of the lowest, is that after listening to more of the CD, I discovered that there were other good songs. If you want to hear American Pie, don't buy this. But if you want other Mclean songs, than this is sufficient.

Customer Reviews:
This is the least comprehensive Don McLean hits collection.......2003-11-28
There are legions of one hit wonders who had their one big hit and disappeared from the music scene. When Don McLean burst upon the charts with "American Pie" there was a good chance that he might quickly disappear as well since it was fairly obvious that the odds were against him ever having a bigger hit. But while McLean never had another hit as popular he certainly proved he had more than one great song in him when he wrote "Vincent" (a.k.a. "Starry Starry Night") and a couple of very good songs in "And I Love You So" and "Castles in the Air." I even like his "Driedel" song. Unfortunately, this import collection of McLean's hits misses out on his cover of Roy Orbison's "Crying," which makes this a lesser collection that the original 10-track hits album from EMI and is not even worth comparing to "The Very Best of Don McLean," which has 16-tracks, including all of the above and a new version of "American Pie." So, while there are songs on this album that are not worth listening to more than once, but the ones that are good are simply great. McLean is clearly one of those artists where you just need his "Best of" album, but you still want to be selective on that score, as indicated above. Final Note: I always thought that the name of the character of Vincent on television's "Beauty and the Beast" was taken from McLean's song given the line: "But I could have told you, Vincent, this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you."

Kathy Rocks Ever!.......2006-01-01
Oh,yeah! Also here in Brazil she commanded, complained, got her tantrums as well but,she is Kathy;highly gifted, charmingly glamourous, her elegant golden singing beautifully soaring over brazilian audiences and so on.About this cd,I would prefer a completely new one. However, this is a gorgeous compilation, just perfect to Battle beginners or her fans, especially these spirituals that belongs incontestablely to her heavenly throat.I hope much more from Miss Battle just 'cause she is a great performer,in fact nobody or nothing couldn't denies that no matter she's doing backstage.Cowardly, poisonous "kid's rewiews" show us solely how empty is this quarrel.I hope a DG reissue of her beloved, out of print Schubert recital as well.
A wide presentation of the work of an amazing artist.......2005-12-23
This CD provides a sampling of Kathleen Battle's voice and interpretive abilities from coloratura virtuousity (Voices of Spring) to the simple, heartfelt spiritual (Talk about a child).
First of all, there's THAT voice. You hear a voice that is uniquely angelic and capable of expressing a wide range of moods. You hear a voice that glitters like a diamond, skips happily and effortlessly (and in impeccable tune) from note to note like it's nobody's business, one that that reminds you of moonbeams and early morning dew on pink rose petals. You've simply got to her it to believe it.
On this CD, the listener is provided with the the works/composers for which she's well known: Handel Opera (E pur cosi / piangero la sorte mia), Mozart Opera (S'altro che lagrime), Bel Canto Opera (Ah, tardai troppo...), French Opera (Depuis le jour), spirituals, and a few popular songs for sopranos such as Gershwin's Summertime and Faure's Pie Jesu
If you're just popping the CD in, try: (1) Ah, tardai troppo, (2) Voices of Spring, (3) Talk about a child, (4) I loves you, Porgy, and (5) Pie Jesu.
I suppose if you are a fan of heavy, dramatic voices, Kathleen Battle may not be to your liking. But I suspect that if you listen to her, you still might be amazed...
A Great Coloratura Soprano .......2005-04-03
Coloratura sopranos are a dying breed today. The era of Lily Pons and Beverly Sills is long gone and opera audiences favor a more "heavy" coloratura sound- or at least a full lyric one, such as the voice types of Kiri Te Kenawa, Carol Vanness and Renee Fleming. Kathleen Battle was in many ways an artist who payed homage to the coloratura queens of olden days. Only Natalie Dessay, of late, represents that kind of singer. much This album showcases her best work, and she is in fine voice, bringing a luminous and sunny quality to her interpretations, while keeping the dramatic appeal of the text. She was at best a Handel/Mozart/Strauss/Gounod singer, and never fared well in the more dramatic reperotoire of Verdi or Puccini heroines. She never sang Madame Butterfly, which if she had gone through training, she could have nailed, especially because her dramatic aspirations coupled with her soft, vulnerable sound would have suited her as Ciao Ciao San, in the way that Ying Huang interpreted the role. Verdi opera must have frightened her and she could never dream of taking on the roles that Leontyne Price performed, surely an influence in her student days made all the more credible because Leontyne Price was a "sister" African-American. So Leonora, Aida and Suor Angelica were out of her reach. While she sang with Jessie Norman in concert and recitals (like the Spirituals Concert), she must have been secretly or overtly ? jealous of the fact that Jessye Norman had a voice that could swallow the world!! A big, beautiful voice such as Ms. Norman's is closer to the true goddesses of operas in the tradition of Maria Callas, while Battle is more of the "tiny, bright, canary" voice. She ranks among the best of the lighter sopranos- Beverly Sills, and like Sumi Jo today. Her fellow co-artists used to call her the "Singing Mosquito". But she is marvelous in singing Handel oratorio(the only times I've heard her sing live), Mozart- Sussannah, Zerlina, the Countess in Figaro, Gounod- Juliette, Bizet- Micaela, but could never truly master the more difficult Mozart heroines- Dona Ana in Don Giovanni or Fiordiligi in Cosi Fan Tutte or even Konstanza in Die Entfurung, though try she did. In Strauss operas, she made a fine Zerbinetta, though she always oozed a confidence that made it seem as if these difficult pieces were a piece of cake for her. Some arias in this collection appear that way too.
Kathleen Battle has long since disappeared from the opera world, singing off and on. Her last singing engagement was for the soundtrack to the Japanese action saga "House of Flying Daggers" in which she sings in a very Japanese/poetic style. Before that she sang in Mythodea opposite Jessie Norman in a massive choral work by Vangelis, and also in Disney's Fantasia 2000. Her constant bitchiness, diva antics and disrespect to conductors and singers became too much and finally Joseph Volpe fired her from the Met. She had stayed there for so long because James Levine took a shine to her. As a singer, she was a perfectionist and in her body of work it shows. But she displayed a nasty diva temperament that does not sit well today. In the 80's, she would come to rehearsals late, would criticize everyone from conductor to costuma makers and even once disrespected the much older and experienced Rosalind Elias, a beloved mezzo at the Met. While I think that Volpe did the right thin in firing Battle, I think that Battle's voice is glorious and would buy her albums, even if she mostly poses as if she were in Vogue cover shots.
Great compilation of Kathleen Battle's work.......2005-03-26
This is a great compilation CD of recordings made by Battle, which are currently deleted by Universal Music.
The selections are first rate and capture the artistry of Kathleen Battle perfectly, a shimmering, silvery, clean and clear voice which has captivated millions of people worldwide
Beautiful Voice.......2005-02-24
I find it hard to give anything under 5 stars for any work including Miss Battle. Her technique and mastery of the female voice is quite remarkable. I am a HUGE fan of the soprano voice and I have found no one who posses the talents, skills, and interpretations of Battle. I would like to have seen more variety in this compilation CD. Her Rosina, Zerbinetta, Semele, other such roles were obviously ignored in the making of this CD. I think anyone will be hard pressed to find any lyric/coloratura soprano who amounts to the skill level of Miss Battle. Talent is talent, and she's got plenty of it. A person's attitude has nothing to do with their abilities as a performer, and I am tired of people knocking Miss Battle because of the stigma with which she is attached. Personally, she has never done anything to me nor the number of others who criticize her for her actions which took place over a decade ago. You cannot say that this woman does not posses mad skills. She is a lovely woman who has accomplished great things. I would gladly buy any CD that carries the name "Kathleen Battle".

This is James Galway's first CD with a new label, and it presents him at his most lyrical. Every selection is long-melodied and soothingly played, including an interesting transcription of the 2nd movement of Rodrigo's Concerto de Aranjuez. Who would have guessed that a flute could substitute so handsomely for a guitar? Schubert's "Ave Maria" is mellow and sweet, Brahms's "Lullaby" is nicely accented, and he's well-matched with his wife in the "Barcarolle" from The Tales of Hoffmann. Two bonus tracks offer the world premiere of a haunting suite from The Lord of the Rings trilogy, composed by Howard Shore, and a new version of John Denver's "Annie's Song," perhaps Galway's most famous piece. Along the way, there's a mesmerizing transcription of Ravel's "Pavane pour une Infante défunte" (originally for piano), a moving version of "Che faro
" from Gluck's Orfeo ed Eurydice, and more. Fans of Galway's won't want to miss this relaxing, beautifully recorded CD. --Robert Levine

Thank you!

Soothing..........2007-05-06
I suppose that James Galway is about the most reknowned flautist of our time. I would file this CD under the category of "light" classics. As such, it is a masterpiece. Not only does every track feature a beautiful melody, but as a whole the recording creates a mood of peace and calm. It is utterly soothing and relaxing. Of special interest for all of you "Lord of the Rings" is a suite based on thems from the movie trilogy. It has an appealing Celtic feel.
This CD takes you from the busy world and puts you out in "space".
James Galway's triumphant Deutsche Grammophon return.......2005-02-27
Fans of James Galway may not realize that he recorded on Deutsche Grammophon in the past, as a key member of the Berlin Philharmonic during the early 1970s; this CD is a splendid "return" to this recording label. It is a brilliant mixture of classical and popular music, representing Galway's uncanny ability of playing superb "Mood Music", aided by ample orchestral support from the London Symphony Orchestra. Among the bonus tracks are a new version of John Denver's "Annie's Song" for which Galway has earned ample worldwide recognition and a haunting suite from film composer Howard Shore's scores for "The Lord of the Rings" film trilogy, playing themes associated with the Hobbits and their beloved The Shire.
Some Good Galway Crossover Selections.......2004-12-28
This new recording Sir James's First for DG in quite a long time.
Is a selection of uplifting pieces of music arrainged for flute
and orchestra. Ably abbetted by the LSO and assisted by his wife
Jeanne, who plays quite well too, Sir James shows that he can
still play the flute and the tin whistle with more than enough
talent and feeling. While some people may condemn this as "mood"
music, I find it quite refreshing. Although I can still hope that
there will be a couple recordings of flute concerti comming from
Mr. Galway in the near future. I have never had a problem with
classical artists doing what is now called "Crossover" I think
it gives them a much needed change of pace. After all one can
only play the classic flute liturature so much, and Sir James is
not the first solo artist to make such recordings. His
His performances of the selections on this CD are all quite good
to say the least. My favorites are the "Barcarolle" and "Annies
Song" and the Schubert "Ave Maria", which I think is the best
instrumental recording of this work since Isaac Stern's violin
recording for CBS. Klauspeter Siebel and the London Symphony
Orchestra do a wonderful job accompaning him in these works.
The recorded sound is more than acceptable and I can only hope
that this will be the first of many new James Galway CD's from
DG. Perhaps Sir James can do a disc or Two with the London
Mozart Players as well for DG too>

--Steve Gdula
