Album Description
Earning Their White Stripes. "But what I'm listening to most of the time at present is an album called Good For What Ails You, which is an album of songs that people used to listen to at medicine shows all over the States. It's quite an interesting album and I think that people would be well advised to pick it up." Jack White - Sunday Mail (Australia) Dec 18, 2005Five Stars. Groundbreaking. "Fans of Nick Tosches' Where Dead Voices Gather will lap up this extraordinary snapshot of an America that is still shrouded in shadow. Good For What Ails You supplants the Harry Smith collections by surveying the people's music of the day, some of which sounds like nothing you have heard before." Jon Savage - MOJO Dec 2005
Before motion pictures, before radio, before television, the traveling Medicine Shows brought entertainment to America! Flamboyant pitch doctors roamed the land, hawking their tonics, elixirs, and miracle cures, and with them came a host of singers, dancers, comedians, banjo pickers, blues shouters, jug blowers, string ticklers, and minstrel men. The shows died out by mid-20th century, but not before a handful of seasoned veterans left their musical legacy on phonograph records. Here are classic performances by such colorful names as Pink Anderson, Daddy Stovepipe, Gid Tanner, Blind Sammie, Bogus Ben Covington, Fiddlin' John Carson, Banjo Joe, Shorty Godwin, Beans Hambone, Emmett Miller & His Georgia Crackers, the Three Tobacco Tags, and many more!
Two-CD Set / 48 Songs Digitally Remastered / Over 2 Hours of Music / Six-Panel Digipak with 72-page Full Color Booklet
A Profusely Illustrated History of the Medicine Shows, many Rare Photographs and Firsthand Accounts never before published, plus full discography and song descriptions.

Old Time Music.......2007-05-13
You will feel so much better.......2007-01-25
But at least we can listen to the music. I've only received this the other day and I've not taken it out of the player, it goes to work with me and takes me home again, it plays in the background when I'm busy about the house. Yes some of the sound quality is hissy, but they are old recordings and besides I would rather hear it like that, it adds to the feel. These are happy songs, even when they are talking about slashing someones throat. If you looking at this you obviously have an interest in this style of music and you would be doing yourself a favour by purchasing this wonderful collection. You get 2 CD's and a wonderful booklet that tells you a little history of the genre and pictures of some the the performers on the CD's as well as a little history on each of the songs.
The right medicine for the blahs! Outstanding fun!.......2006-10-23
Brings Back Memories to the Old (and Young)!.......2006-08-28
I lent the cd's to my father, and they brought back fond memories of his childhood in western OK when the medicine shows would come to town and set up on the square. Everyone would attend the "show" and listen to the music, sales pitches, and go home with something! He truly enjoyed the cd's, also.
Even if medicine shows are new to you, the music is worth the time to listen. Lot's of fun, interesting lyrics, and you might even hear something that has come back again!?
Priceless anthology.......2006-07-05

Historic Ragtime.......2001-03-31
This album, made up of live recordings from the early 1960s, finds Thompson in reasonable form, playing some of his best known pieces plus a few standards. His powers had declined a little from his 1948-49 American Music recordings, but he was still able to play in an entertaining fashion. Many of the performances are rather short, but these are historic recordings by a little known but important figue in ragtime.
Delmark is to be commended for this release: let's hope they re-issue the rest of the Euphonic back catalogue. Anyone interested in ragtime and early jazz should consider buying this CD.

Carolina Road's Bluegrass CDCustomer Reviews:
Dedicated to a traditional sound presented with charisma & conviction.......2006-12-27
Lorraine is very proud of their traditional music foundation. Songs from Bill Monroe and Carter Stanley reinforce that respect. At the same time, they cover songs like "Tupelo County Jail" and "A Beautiful River of Live" with more contemporary style and slant. The latter comes from the pens of Tom T. and Dixie Hall, who now have this band on their new record label's roster. Perhaps what really makes me sit up and tune in are the five masterfully-crafted originals from mandolininst/vocalist Lorraine Jordan and guitarist/vocalist David Guthrie. "Picking with the Boys" has a tongue-in-cheek hook about picking bluegrass instead of being "home banging on pots and pans." Her heartwarming "Mays' Store" is another sentiment related to the delight of front-porch pickin' every Saturday night.
The title cut has a similar tempo, is also sung by Tim Hall in a warm story-teller's fashion, and even has a few riffs in harmony. David Guthrie's "My Hearts Cry" closes the project with his tenor voice climbing sky-high into the clouds just as it does earlier on "Cry, Cry Darling." The band knows what it takes to achieve that high, lonesome sound. Bassist Tim Hall is credited with playing bass guitar, while guest Zack McLamb is listed for acoustic bass. Consummate banjo-player Ben Greene (formerly with The James King Band) provides a crisp snap to their drive, and he also lays in a nice baritone harmony when needed. Liner notes could've been a little clearer on who is singing when. With Josh Goforth fiddling and singing too, the group's got a complete, jam-packed sound that is guaranteed to satiate every audience's bluegrass craving. This band is on the rise! The multiple award winners' hard work is paying off. "A Stop in Southport Towne" is but one more milestone along their ascending journey to even greater acclaim. Lou Reid is an alumnus of the Seldom Scene, and his new band Carolina is very much in the Seldom Scene vein with its mix of mandolin, banjo and electric bass and its blend of traditional bluegrass and contemporary folk material. Reid pretty much sticks to mandolin on this album, but it's his Skaggs-like tenor voice that shines through, especially on the modern songs like his own folkish "Hands of Time," Roger Rasnake's country-flavored "Always Thinkin' of You" or the a cappella hymn "Lord Have Mercy on My Soul" (cowritten by Reid and the Seldom Scene's T. Michael Coleman). --Geoffrey Himes

Album Description
There is power in Bill Monroe's music, but even he probably had no idea that in 1974 it would have life-changing effects on young Maro Kawabata, watching him on Japanese television, or that it would launch Maro on a quest for musical meaning and excellence. Maro's story is one of persistence and determination, leading him to school in the United States, back home to Japan where he met and married his American bride, Sandra, and then to return to the USA to raise his family in the midst of his musical Odyssey. Now an Ohio resident, you can hear Maro's commitment to heart-to-heart communication through music here on CAROLINA BLUE, the CD that is the culmination of a lifetime of thinking, planning, refining and sharpening his musical ideas and skills.
To bring his vision to light Maro has called on several gifted musicians for assistance; some are friends he has known from his travels around the country, while others are people whose talents he has admired, but whom he never met until first getting together for the recording sessions. His list of friends and pickers is impressive, indeed: Bobby Hicks, Sammy Shelor, Keith Little, Ron Stewart, Missy Raines, Jim Hurst, Butch Baldassari, Kazuhiro Inaba, and Raymond McLain.
On this CD you will hear some old music as well as some new tunes. The old ones are included because they are beautiful, certainly; but also out of respect they represent the underlying traditions on which Maro has based his own musical philosophy. Though they are familiar, through these sensitive performances Maro pays homage.
The new tunes are here for many of the same reasons CAROLINA BLUE was composed as Maro was traveling through the mountains of western North Carolina, struck by the natural beauty surrounding him and the sense of the connection between that place and the music in his heart. SAMANTHA was named for his daughter, who must surely be pleased to share her name with such a lovely melody.

Album Description
Packed with twenty (20) Lowcountry blues originals and clocking in at 72+ minutes of playing time (co-producer Eddie West joked about a "boxed set" while the album was being recorded), this is a big and boisterous package from the Carolina blues artist and his talented band. "Why not max out the CD?," asks SCS. "Plenty more tunes where these came from." As usual, blues is the foundation, but the Lowcountry musical flavors range from Caribbean rhythms and Southern rock to country, funk, and Latin. A wild ride through the heart of "Lowcountry blues"!
