Youssou N'Dour is Senegal's most famous singer-composer, a powerhouse who has long since become an international icon. His meteoric rise in the West was partly the result of Peter Gabriel's ardent sponsorship, plus a series of high-profile collaborations, like "Seven Seconds," his best-selling duet with Neneh Cherry. However, it is likely that his undeniable genius and charisma would have taken him just as far had he traveled solo. On this strikingly well-coordinated retrospective, the youthful bandleader of Etoile de Dakar is captured in the throes of burnishing and refining a synthesis of bubbling Wolof polyrhythms and lightly applied Latin influences that he called Mbalax. Youssou's piercing, filigreed vocals are supported by tinny, mellow electric guitars, explosive batteries of talking drums, brash horns, and elaborate backup singing. His lyrics were still based on praise-singing, but his revolutionary sound united fans from all backgrounds, thus striking a decisive blow against class prejudice. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars Historic and alluring modern Senegalese pop.......2002-11-27

A perfect overview of the band that brought Senegalese superstar Youssou N'Dour into the international spotlight. There's a wide variety of styles, ranging from more acoustic and traditional-sounding material, to expansive, hypnotic electric guitar tunes that are closer to the lushly produced, lavish pop that N'Dour makes nowadays. Anyone interested in African pop owes it to themselves to check this disc out; it may open up a whole new world of sound for you!

5 out of 5 stars Don't buy this unless you want to get hooked on Coltrane.......2007-05-16

I'm relatively new to jazz and bought this album on a whim. I was not disappointed, this is a terrific CD. One listen to the songs on this CD and I was hooked on Coltrane. WOW! I don't know enough to tell you where this album fits into the rest of Coltrane's work or the jazz universe more generally, if you want to know these details you'll have to do more searching on the internet. I can tell you though that all six songs (about 40 minutes total) on this album are outstanding and you'll be listening to them over and over. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars another buried treasure in coltrane's discography,.......2007-03-29

this fine set from april, 1957 has two baritone saxophone players joining up with coltrane's tenor. cecil payne and pepper adams deliver fine performances on an album that is quite conventional when compared with what was soon to come from john coltrane. nevertheless, mr trane hits many a moment of intensity here, and fans of his later work should enjoy this release just fine. the excellent piano man mal waldron is on board, too. it's a session that is well worth having.

    4 out of 5 stars DAKAR: a good sound.......2006-08-02

a fairly fascinating Coltrane album on the Prestige label. what's most interesting to hear on Dakar is the line up of 3 saxes...Coltrane on tenor (natch') and Cecil Payne and Pepper Adams on baritone. there are plenty of cool moments (the delightful title track and the smooth careen of Route 4). this is certainly not the ultimate Coltrane disc and not the best of the Prestige output (my money's on the stellar Black Pearls album for that honour) but this is a great album full of solid playing and memorable performances.

5 out of 5 stars Mind blowing solos.......2004-02-18

The Art Pepper solos are unforgettable!

5 out of 5 stars Opening Up the World of Jazz.......2002-05-08

Celtic music and culture, often believed to be of Irish and Scottish descent only, has captured America's fancy. Lord of the Dance and its ilk feed into the phenomenon of a recently enamored public. Names like Caitlin, Breana, and McKenna serve themselves up on the circuit's Most Popular Baby Name lists; Irish bar bands flourish; and listeners from both coasts continue to groove to the abrasive defiance of The Pogues' Shane McGowan as rubbed up against melodious Guinness-fueled reels. Now Putumayo offers the compelling collection Dublin to Dakar, a veritable feast of worldwide Celtic music, accompanied by excellent liner notes detailing the migration-derived legacy of the Celts. Featuring multilingual artists from Italy, France, Spain, and Guinea, among other countries, the compilation is an exciting blend of tradition and startling innovation, ranging from slightly precious elfin sounds to reggae-inflected dance music and emotive balladry to a gypsy-inspired reel. --Paige La Grone

    1 out of 5 stars Good idea,but..........2006-06-23

When Putumayo made this compilation,"Lord of the Dance"&"Riverdance" were smash hits.ANYTHING Celtic was in.Strangely,Putumayo's Celtic collections aren't its best.

This album has a few highlights.
Youssou N'Dour&Alan Stivell have a powerful track about uniting the world.
The Modena City Ramblers have a melancholy song about the end of the world.(It goes well with REM's "It's the end of the world as we know it")
Baka Beyond provides a strong track combining Celtic&African music.
Na Lua has a good track.
    Cheb Mami's "Azwaw 2" is the BEST.It's a rousing combination of bagpipes&Algerian rai.Very danceable.

The Afro-Celts are still going strong, however.

    Putumayo's Odyssey albums,fortunately,have evolved.Their Greek,African&Jewish Odysseys are quite good.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic compilation.......2003-07-07

This has been long a favorite of my whole family, children and adults. Whenever we travel and have to limit the number of CDs we can carry this is the first chosen.

4 out of 5 stars Eclectic, funky and really cool.......2003-05-25

Fanciful combinations of Celtic and other world music styles from African, Continental, Celtic and Scandinavian artists. The back cover of this album sums it up well: "African, Gypsy, Latin, Arabic, Indian, Scandinavian and Reggae elements are combined with Celtic music to create a unique, cross-cultural musical feast." Some of the more familiar musicians featured are Capercaillie, Kila, Aine Minogue, Alan Stivell, Baka Beyond and Cheb Mami. All of the selections are striking, but I particularly enjoy Monogue's slinky, spooky, tabla-punctuated "O Boro Braindi Braindi", and Mami's track "Azwaw2" which combines rai with the pipes, fiddles and flutes of the Breton group Bagad de Kemper. It is fascinating to listen to works like these and hear how seamlessly the music of different cultures, old and new, can flow together. "All are one", and yet individuality is not only maintained but celebrated. (May life do a better job of imitating art ... !)

    5 out of 5 stars Great music.......2001-06-20

This album is sure to open up people's minds about the Celtic culture...I know it did mine. I didn't, until hearing this cd realize that "Celtic" does not only mean Scotland and Ireland, but is far wider. The music on this album helps to show the spread of the Celtic people and culture, with music from Africa, Spain, Norway, England, Italy and others. The 23 page booklet contains a 2 page essay about the Celtic culture and influences worldwide, as well as a page on each artist and their song. This album showcases how music as diverse as reggae, Arabic and African can be blended with traditional celtic instuments and melodies. This album is truly an experience not to be missed.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......1999-12-25

Sometimes the Putumayo fusion albums can seem strained or bland. This album really works. I actually enjoyed the Italian Celtic mix. It was fabulous with real passion. I recommend this album for long journeys because you will never grew tired of it.

These recordings from 1970 and 1971 are revealing. They were born in the early days of Africanisation in Dakar, Senegal, when French still ruled the language and the culture. This music is defiantly African, rooted in the ancient traditions of the Wolof language and the ancient kingdoms of the region, but also modern, urban, and somewhat revolutionary for its time. Led by singer Laye M'Boup, and featuring notables like Thione Seck and Medioune Diallo, the group has a heavily Latin sound featuring jazz- and blues-inspired horn charts, African vocal lines, and--for the time--some of the most outside guitar licks this side of Jimi Hendrix. Recorded in live sessions (without an audience) in the Baobab club in Dakar, the pieces run the gamut from rumba-driven dance tunes to some of the weirdest, underwater-sounding soul psychedelia ever to emerge from Africa. It may have taken these recordings almost three decades to reach a wider audience, but they are destined to be remembered as classics of African's golden age of pop. --Louis Gibson

          Customer Reviews:

          5 out of 5 stars Roots.......2003-03-18

This album is amazing. This album shows why they have titled their most recent album "Speicalists in All Styles." There is still the Cuban sound in there somewhere, but it sounds more like something produced by lee perry. Their use of delay on the guitar is so innocent and amazing. Its a rough recording, but that makes it better once you get used to it. Track 3 and track 6 are unbeivable and worth the $... bucks right there. I love thier other stuff, but I cannot explain to you how cool this album is. It's for a hot summer night to just feel happy.

          ...

4 out of 5 stars Early Senegalese grooves, played live in the old days..........2001-12-14

These live recordings from 1970-71 capture Orchestre Baobab playing at the very venue in Senegal that they took their name from. The sound quality is slightly rougher than their later studio albums, but the songs are great nonetheless -- these guys were an impressive ensemble! The raggedy vocals, sung in the urban Wolof dialect, may be too shrill for some listeners, but the musical grooves are quite nice. On a couple of tracks, the guitars go wild, soaring into psychedelic heights; mostly, though, this is mellow, beautiful material. I'd recommend their studio work first, but this ain't bad.

          3 out of 5 stars Baobab N'Wolof.......2000-06-10

If you miss the sounds of the Theis markets, a neighborhood baptism or afternoons sipping tea with your Senegalese friends, this is the CD for you. It will take you back to the sights and sounds of Senegal. Filled with traditional Wolof music it is an excellent choice.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Striking, richly textured, beautiful African music........1998-08-31

"DAKAR HEART" is the debut solo album of one of Africa's most intriguing and important pop composers, confirming Jimi Mbaye's status as a figure held in extraordinarily high esteem in the world of Senegalese mbalax. Mbaye is already somewhat well-known outside of Africa - among African music fans, at least - as the lead guitarist and musical alter ego of superstar Youssou N'Dour, with whom he has developed this vocally sweet, rhythmically pugnacious brand of Senegalese pop during twenty years of innovation and globetrotting concertizing. With this record, Mbaye steps out into a personal space of poetry, passion and moral subtlety boosted by an unflagging current of traditional Senegalese musical energy and refined by a graceful and unusual palette of sounds. "DAKAR HEART" will likely extend Mbaye's reputation beyond Africa's borders, and rightfully so, as no Senegalese artist to date, save the gravel-voiced Wasis Diop with whom Mbaye shares so many traits, is anywhere near him in musical intelligence and in ardor for the beautiful.
