Album Description
Nekromantix are quite simply the premier psychobilly band in the world. Founded in 1989, over the course of six albums (three in the US), Nekromantix have inspired a generation of rockabilly and psychobilly bands, earned a Grammy nod, and spawned the immensely popular side project Horrorpops, who have scanned over 80,000 CDs in their own right. Now comes Life Is A Grave And I Dig It!!!, a return to the raw, driving sound of early classics like Return of the Loving Dead. Anchored by leader Kim Nekroman's thumping upright bass, Life Is A Grave And I Dig It!!perfectly delivers on Alternative Press' description of the band as "a 1950s date with Motorhead." With a headlining national tour out of the box - the 2007 incarnation of the wildly successful Hellcat tour - and a world-wide following from extensive touring in Japan, the US, and Europe, Nekromantix will continue to lead the pack, all the way to the boneyard!Customer Reviews:

straight up rock and roll
if you ever get a chance to see these guys live do it!!!!!!
Eh...........2007-05-20
The album displays a more rockabilly themed songs compared to Nekromantix's other albums. I'm not saying the songs are bad, I'm just saying they lack a cetain attitude and power to the songs due to the guitar. If your into more rockabilly than pick this CD up, but if you are looking for their old type of music then you might want to pass.
A Masterpiece.......2007-05-15
If you are looking for something along the lines of DEMENTED ARE GO, then do NOT get this album... But if you want to hear something that is good or requires talent then go with this album.
Yes, I did say that DEMENTED ARE GO has no talent.
And NO, they are not "More Psycho" because they groan into the microphone and do their best to sound like monsters, or because they have more gruesome lyrics... They try so hard to be extra psycho that they no longer concentrate on writing good songs but writing songs that make them psychobilly!
If you have any questions I would be glad to answer them by email at

Isaac Hayes' 1969 solo debut Hot Buttered Soul set a soulful tone for the decade that followed, influencing innumerable artists and turning on a more conventional audience to the genre. Therefore it comes as no surprise that three quarters of that record are included on this compilation from his 1968-`77 Stax Records resume (though they are heavily edited to fit the 32-song, two-CD format). Renowned as one of his generation's greatest songwriters and arrangers, Hayes punctuates his creations with hints of r&b, funk, jazz and soul. Examples here include the indelible "Theme From Shaft," a funked-up cover of Burt Bacharach's and Hal David's "The Look of Love," the slow-grooving "Do Your Thing" and a previously unreleased gospel standard, "His Eye Is on the Sparrow." The inspired packaging includes a four-track DVD that features a trio of Hayes' performances from the 1972 WATTSTAX Festival at the Los Angeles Coliseum--providing as much evidence of the magnitude of Hayes' esteem as this starter set for anyone seeking an introduction to a legendary artist. --Scott HolterCustomer Reviews:

You Should Dig It..........2005-11-22
"Hot Buttered Soul" was the kick-off for a career that eventually came to define mid-seventies soul music, and it still stands as an all-time classic. It is amply represented here by standout extended jams like "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" and "Walk On By". It also moves through eleven subsequent albums, with mixed results that are nonetheless continually fascinating. At times, he sounds like a spitting image for Barry White, but with an unconventional flair for going further than any other funk soul brother would risk. Photos show Hayes wearing clothing that would make the king of the pimps jealous (head to toe in fur, or head to toe in leopard skin...you get the idea), while being referred to as `Black Moses'. It was a singular, unforgettable image that suits every track on this disk.
As a visual aid, Disk One represents the sound of mink pants and an open-chested shirt while cruising in a gold-tinged Cadillac with pink naugahyde interior. "The Theme from Shaft," "By the Time I Get to Phoenix", "Hyperbolicsyllabic-Sesquedalymistic" and "Never Can Say Goodbye" all capture Hayes at his glorious, over-the-top peak. Disk two, meanwhile, is the aural equivalent of carelessly discarded chain mail, crushed velvet sofas, red light bulbs, and a bottle of Mateus Rose. "Walk On By," "If Loving You Is Wrong", "Baby I'm-A Want You" and "Let's Stay Together" all stress the love-man vibe like burning incense. Far from consistent, though, there are a few mis-steps. Like everything else here, though, even the clunkers are spectacular in their badness. "Three Tough Guys" and "Come Live with Me" are both trite, incredibly overwrought, and poorly written - clunkers of astounding proportions, and all the more fascinating for it. The videos on the DVD disk are fabulous, though, both musically and historically, featuring three great songs/visuals from the often out-of-print film "Wattstax", plus the incredibly funny and ridiculous "Chocolate Salty Balls" video, from the `South Park' cartoon. Inconsistent but always fascinating, this is one CD collection that should not be missed.

On their ninth CD, the Brian Jonestown Massacre does what they're best at. That is, they conjure up visions of Beggars Banquet-era Rolling Stones and other artists from the swinging '60s. Emphasizing acoustic slide guitars, harmonica, handclaps, and tambourine, Anton Newcombe sings passionately in Jaggeresque style. While decidedly retro, the band is always entertaining as they evoke their musical heroes. On the song "Mansion in the Sky" Newcombe recalls the mood of early Dylan with evocative results. Folksy, bluesy, and particularly understated, this disc contains only six songs and leaves you hungry for more. With Miranda Lee Richards's haunting vocal on "Reign On" and an eerie update of Charles Manson's composition "Arkansas," Brian Jonestown Massacre turns six into nine one more time. It's brief, but bright, and their most satisfying work to date. --Mitch MyersAlbum Description

A Christmas Tradition for the Ages: Leontyne Price & Xmas.......2006-05-26
Without a doubt, the singing of soprano Leontyne Price -"La Splendissima" - is incomparable here. There has never been a soprano with a timbre so incredibly distinctive & beautiful that also infuses her music with a rare humanity and humility. Every Christmas is inauguarated with this recording at my home, and those fortunate enough to receive this CD as a gift from me, are infinitely grateful & astounded by Ms. Price's gifts.(especially those not inclined to Opera singers!)
Her collaboration here with Maestro Von Karajan is just as rewarding as all of the others including "Carmen", "Tosca", the Verdi "Requiem"(VHS/DVD), and a legendary "Il Trovatore". These (2) musical 'giants' seem to derive inspiration from each other that ignites a passionate response from each as well. Nowhere is this more evident than in their now 'classic' rendition of the Schubert "Ave Maria". Listen to the ethereal, voice-like intro of the orchestral strings that precedes Ms. Price's celestial vocalism. It's magical! The programme is diverse and deeply satisfying for the Season. Miss Price's singing, whether in this rep, singing Spirituals, the recital stage, or Grand Opera, is almost always an inveterately soulful experience. It is no less so here. Celebrate the Season (any Season you like) with "La Splendissima" Leontyne Price singing classical 'Soul' music at Christmas. Get this!!!!!!!! Note: This particular packaging includes the original picture and liner notes from the original 1960 Decca release. Its so nostalgic, and makes this collection all the more treasurable. Enjoy.
DECEMBER 1965 IN CHICAGO.......2005-12-21
Nothing is amiss in this collection. The Price instrument was young and spontaneous, the arrangements are spectacular and von Karajan is (for once) taking a back seat to his soloist. Thank you, Mrs. Farrell, for the introduction to this wonderful album. All I have to do is put this CD on and I'm transferred back to the public school library, my classmates eagerly waiting for Christmas to come, and to my family and Christmas home in Chicago.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
The liner notes that accompany this collection note that '70s soul music has never really gotten its due. One could argue that point for days, but hubris aside, there's no denying that Can You Dig It pays serious homage to the golden years of American soul. The new box set contains 6 CDs and 136 cuts, 65 of which hit the No. 1 spot on the R&B and/or pop charts. As you'd expect with a project that mines such a rich era (the CDs are compiled chronologically), it represents a who's who of stars. Among the notables: Marvin Gaye, Sly Stone, Curtis Mayfield, the Spinners, the O'Jays, the Staple Singers, James Brown, Chairmen of the Board, Laura Lee, Freda Payne, and Jean Knight. Lesser lights also get to shine, i.e., El Chicano, who deliver the salsafied hippie anthem "Tell Her She's Lovely." But let's be honest--the selling point is the hits, and from the uplifting "Ooh Child" to the sassy "Want Ads," if you grew up in the '70s (hands up), then these tracks are beloved. Sure, the hard-core fan will probably wish for more obscurities, and the exclusion of Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, and George Clinton is troublesome, but anyone wanting an at-home jukebox loaded with classic R&B will certainly dig this. --Amy LindenCustomer Reviews:
The Rosetta Stone of 70's Soul!!.......2004-03-09
compilation ever unleashed on man or beast. This is the most deluxe boxed set I have seen- 6 discs in an 8 track carrying case
style package. This will take you back to the days of shag carpets, lava lamps and monster size afro hairstyles. Classic 70's Soul is my favorite genre of music and to find such a lovingly compiled set just blew my mind. 136 of the very best cuts of this era including the obvious smash hits like "Cruising","Let's Stay Together", Mr. Big Stuff", I Wanna get Next to You" alongside lesser known or forgotten tracks like "I'm Doin Fine Now" by New York City, "Golden Touch" by Rose Royce.and "Why can't We Live Together" by Timmy Thomas. The set also comes with a beutiful 76 page booklet packed with photos, track by track commentary and artist bios. Obviously a package like this will set you back a bit financially but the fact that you will never stop playing this for the rest of your life makes it worth every penny.
The "8-track" box they come in is a real hoot!.......2004-01-07
The box the discs come in is also cleverly designed to look like it's filled with 8-track tapes. This would make a great gift for anyone who loves 70's soul.
A Great 70's soul music collection.......2003-12-16
I do have one minor complaint: Over 20 of these songs are on another Rhino Box set that I have called "Have a Nice Decade." I felt a little cheated, that Rhino could have sampled some other songs. Moreover, there were some great soul artists that didn't have songs represented on this collection at all: Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, and a few others.
But this is still an excellent collection, and if you love 70's soul music, you might want to splurge and buy it.
Worth 10 Stars-They Sure Don't Make 'em Like This Anymore!!!.......2003-06-11
I love it.......2003-02-22
Even if you don't like soul, R&B, get it anyway if you can. It will broaden you horizons. Added bonus is the booklet that accompanies the grammy-nominated packaging - you will enjoy every aspect of this set.

Representing the best of both worlds, Seattle's Thee Emergency recorded their blistering debut in Detroit. The connection between the Northwest quartet and the Motor City is producer extraordinaire Jim Diamond (the Dirtbombs). If it sounds like Thee Emergency has as much to offer followers of the Seattle sound as the Detroit scene, that would be correct. Their garage is painted metallic blue, spiked with sharp pop hooks, and saturated with soul. Inside you'll find a bottle of gin, a pack of smokes, and dozens of well-worn copies of albums by the Animals, Blue Oyster Cult, and the Stooges. Just try "Get It Up" and "Sugar" on for size. They'll fit. Though full-throated frontwoman Zana Geddes took her nom de rock from Madonna nickname "Dita" and the "Vox" that U2's Bono abandoned somewhere along the way, she follows more closely in the fierce footsteps of Beth Ditto (the Gossip) and Rachel Nagy (the Detroit Cobras). Sonic Smith (guitar, just like his namesake in the MC5), Nick Detroit (bass), and Tom T. Drummer (uh, drums) make the band the powerhouse that it is, but Dita Vox is to Thee Emergency as Poly Styrene was to X-Ray Spex: the voice that grabs your attention and just won't let go. --Kathleen C. FennessyAlbum Description
Seattle's Thee Emergency bring whiskey-drenched rock and soul to their debut full-length release. Honing their craft with countless live shows, Can You Dig It? feels like an extension of those high energy sets. Starting off with the firey "Girl You Should've Known," singer Dita Vox sings about relationships lost with such bombast, you can actually feel her kicking you out the door. Peppered among the screamers ("Girl...", "Holdin' On", "Revolution #1") is the Jagger-channeling title track,"Can You Dig It?" as well as the deep gospel blues of "Cream" and "No Condemnation." Recorded in one short 2006 Detroit winter week with famed White Stripes producer Jim Diamond, Can You Dig It? has become one of Seattle's most anticipated releases of 2006.Customer Reviews:
