Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars supreme collection of a maestro's work.......2007-04-02

This scrupulously assembled box solves the where-do-I-start question for anyone who wants some serious representation of this master's work in his or her collection. Waller's ouevre is immense, multifaceted, and essential. So a box like this that culls from his most important categories of music [one disk each of his own sung songs, instrumentals, and tin pan alley covers] is an invaluable boon to any jazz fans that want more than a single-disk 'intro' set. The selections are brilliant, the sound is dazzling, and the accompanying documentation is amazing. All in all, one of the best jazz boxes I personally have ever seen. Recommended with the highest honors.

5 out of 5 stars Hand Full of Keys.......2007-01-20

There's too little of Waller available on CD-this begins to make up the lack. As usual, his playing is what stands out in this excellent collection.

5 out of 5 stars Meet Fats!!!.......2007-01-19

Mr Orrin Keepnews, one of the legendary jazz producers has given us a great gift: a 3cd box set to get all music fans started on knowing and appreciating one of the great genious of early jazz: Fats Waller. Fats was a total package. He was a singer, an entretainer, an acomplished pianist, and one of the greatest composers in jazz. That he died before his 40th birthday is sad but also speaks greatly of the man who could compose songs just by opening his mouth.

The collection is divided in 3: disc one features Fats the composer, disc 2 Fats the pianist and disc 3 is Fats the entretainer (singing Tin Pan alley songs). Great care and love was put in selecting the songs and the packgaing. The booklet alone deserves a grammy. Great essays and photos. And the price is right. You dont have a reason why you should not get this box.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful introduction to Fats Waller.......2006-10-03

My wife bought this set for me after hearing about it on NPR. Though I love jazz, my album collection is only fair to middlin' (e.g., Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Miles Davis, Coltrane, etc.) and this is my first Fats Waller album. Though it is my first, it won't be my last - as I listened to Fats' phenomenal stride piano and Armstrong-reminiscent voice, I became an instant fan. I have had it two days and have listened to it at home, in the car on the way to work and even at work. I can't get enough.

This is a fan review. I leave it to the real jazzophiles to provide technical reviews (e.g., I can't speak to the production quality or selection of songs, given how prolific a songwriter/performer Fats was). As a new fan, however, I highly recommend this set as an introduction to Fats' music and it's hard to beat the price for a box set. The set includes an informative booklet that provides background on and plenty of pictures of Fats, His Rhythm and his times.

A few of my favorite songs from the album (so far) are "Honeysuckle Rose," "Hold My Hand," and "Honey Hush." That being said, I haven't heard a song I haven't liked.

Amazon.com essential recording

Thomas "Fats" Waller was a brilliant stride pianist and singer, and certainly the only jazz musician who could rival Louis Armstrong as an entertainer, communicating some of the larger-than-life vitality and humor that Armstrong possessed. Waller was also one of the first great songwriters of jazz, his phrasing perfectly mated to the music's rhythmic nuances. This Centennial edition of Satch Plays Fats begins with the nine tracks of Armstrong's 1955 LP devoted to some of Waller's best-known songs, from the drive of "I'm Crazy 'bout My Baby" and the smooth bounce of "Ain't Misbehavin'" to the moving pathos of "Black and Blue." It was one of the highlights of Armstrong's later career, directly comparable to another magnificent session devoted to a single songwriter, Louis Armstrong Plays W.C. Handy. Armstrong is joined by his regular All-Stars, the well-traveled group that matched his clarion trumpet with the vocal smears of trombonist Trummy Young and the woody, liquid clarinet of fellow New Orleans master Barney Bigard, all superbly supported by pianist Billy Kyle, bassist Arvell Shaw, and drummer Barrett Deems. The CD also includes four alternate takes from the 1955 session, and adds another seven tracks of Armstrong's early recordings of Waller tunes. There are versions of "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Black and Blue," recorded in 1929 when Armstrong was featured in the Connie's Hot Chocolates show, and a stunning trumpet solo on "Blue Turning Grey over You." The result is a valuable composite portrait of Armstrong's enduring relationship with Waller's songs. --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars SATCHMO AND FATS.......2007-01-13

ALTHOUGH THIS CD IS A COMPILIATION OF LOUIS ARMSTRONG RECORDINGS PLAYING MUSIC THAT WAS ORIGINALLY WRITTEN AND RECORDED BY FATS WALLER, IT HAS A GREAT SENSE OF CONTINUITY. AS THOUGH ALL THE SONGS WERE RECORDED SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS CD. VELMA MIDDLETON ASSISTS WITH THE VOCALS ON A FEW TRACKS, AND SHE DOES A GREAT JOB COMPLEMENTING SATCHMO. THE RECORDING DATES RANGE FROM THE LATE 20'S TO THE MID 50'S. THIS IS A GREAT CD. I LOVE LOUIS ARMSTRONG AND I LOVE FATS WALLER, SO IT IS NO SURPRISE THAT I LOVE THIS CD TOO!

5 out of 5 stars Louis Armstrong plays "Fats" Waller with all his might--and Velma Middleton assisting!.......2006-02-26

Many years ago, a very good friend of mine had a cassette player in his car and he would drive around town playing this album on cassette tape over and over again. I eventually heard it when I was riding in his car one day and I begged him for a copy. He gave me a cassette tape of the original album, with just the original nine tracks that the original LP had--and, of course, I played the tape until it was worn through! I feared that I would never get hear this beautiful music again. Imagine my joy when I discovered this CD for sale at Amazon! I couldn't get it here fast enough.

This CD version of the original record album exceeded my expectations by far. There are 11 (yes, ELEVEN) bonus tracks on the CD, of which four were never before released! You get edited alternate versions with people coaching and commenting to Louis after the take. Other tracks date as far back as 1929 so you truly get a perspective of how Louis admired Fats Waller all through his life. (The two worked together only briefly once or twice at the most.) Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent even on my portable music player. Louis Armstrong both sings and plays the music of "Fats" Waller so darn well you'll never tire of playing this one. Louis, his trumpet and the music of "Fats" Waller? Ha! Play it LOUD AND OFTEN because this album's a winner!

For example, the CD starts off beautifully with the classic "Honeysuckle Rose." We also hear "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "I'm Crazy 'Bout My Baby." After spending the entire afternoon listening several times to all the tracks over and over again, it's still tough, if not impossible, to isolate any "favorite" song of mine on this CD. Two of the finalists, however, would have to be "Keepin' Out Of Mischief Now" and "All That Meat And No Potatoes."

Armstrong gets a strong boost from the vocals of Velma Middleton, whose talent is almost entirely uncredited and undervalued in this recording. Her voice complements Louis' beautifully and their half sung/half spoken dialogue in "All That Meat And No Potatoes" is catchy, to say the least. The two singers have a natural and relaxed rapport that makes you feel so comfortable listening to their vocalizing.

The CD has a sticker on the front of the jewel case that you get the liner notes by George Avakian and the story of "Fats" Waller (born Thomas Wright Waller). For some inexplicable reason, however, the liner notes are printed twice! There isn't much to read about Armstrong and Velma Middleton is only pointed out in a picture of her singing one of the songs along with Armstrong. The liner notes could be better--a real mistake, in my opinion.

Overall, this CD is still must have music and a real value with the extra tracks. I recommend this for fans of classic jazz, fine trumpet playing and the early work of Louis Armstrong with his band the All-Stars. Barney Bigard plays the clarinet really, really well as it was his specialty and the liner notes do include great photos. Do yourself a favor--get this CD and find out why Amazon chose this as an "essential recording!" SMILE

5 out of 5 stars Two great collaborators two Geniuses.......2005-01-29

Waller and Armstrong were of the same generation and were collaborators in music in the 1920s. Louis's first big leap to popular stardom beyond the tight group of Jazz musicians and performers came when he introduced "Ain't Mis Behavin'" on the Broadway stage. The audiences often forced him to do three or four encores. Folks who had seen the show before would pay full price just to get in to hear Louis sing this one song.

The recordings in the late 20s by Louis with all the vocals are simply my idea of the best music ever recorded by anyone. Rather than get them selected this way, you might want to get one of the CDs or collections that covers that period of time with everything, rather than just the songs by Waller.
Likewise, while the All Stars were not as good as his original Chicago and New York Groups, particularly these later all-stars (I prefer the albums with the great Jack Teagarden), if you get into the music you will want that all too.

At any rate, there is no one else but Louis who can do these songs justice except the Fat man himself, Mr. Waller!

5 out of 5 stars Years of pleasure.......2004-03-19

I'm somewhat embarrassed to say that I've listened to this album almost every day for several years. I have it in my CD-alarm clock and it wakes me up with a smile every morning. Pops' showmanship and musical wizardry blend with Fats Waller's witty and bouncy tunes to create an exceptionally tasty musical gumbo.

I first heard the album decades ago in college and have always loved as it an incredible performance by a great team of jazz artists. While I love Ella-Satch duets on other records, the lesser known Velma Middleton is really the better vocal match for Pops. The band is tight, but creative and the alternate takes show how different the same song can sound even when played by the same band with just a slight difference in the arrangement. This is possibly the greatest record of all time!

4 out of 5 stars A nice deal.......2003-12-30

I must say that it is nice that they packed as many tracks as they could on this CD. You get a few alternate for these sessions, but you also get a bunch of classic 30's recordings from Satchmo playing Fats. Now, when I compare this one to the 'Plays WC handy' record, I have to take out one star, because although Pops seems in fine form here, there is no match for the fire and fun displayed on the 'Plays WC handy' recording.

This is a delightful compilation of Fats' at his best. The remastering is excellent and I would recomend this CD to anyone wanting to listen to jazz piano playing - the CD is worth getting even if only for the scintillating improvisation of 'Aint Misbehavin'

5 out of 5 stars All Around Musical Force.......2006-10-04

Fats Waller had a strong touch on the Keys, could write very good&had a distinctive voice that fueled so many tracks. his band was tight as well. he had such a feel good quality in his playing&overall vibe as a Musician.I got Rhythm is one song that never gets old from this collection. this is a very fully well represented compilation. Fats Waller doesn't get his full due as a all around force. this is a strong collection.

5 out of 5 stars Puts a smile on your face!.......2005-08-02

Excellent compilation of Fats Waller's recordings...both solo piano tracks and with his band. He sings on some of the songs too...as always, his music making puts a smile on your face and gets your toes a tappin'!

5 out of 5 stars FATS WALLER, SECOND ONLY TO LOUIS ARMSTRONG!!!.......2004-03-17

THOMAS FATS WALLER RULES! NO DOUBT ABOUT IT! THE MUSICIAN, A PIANIST AND VOCALIST, POSSESSES THE CHARISMA OF CAB CALAWAY, THE INNOVATIVE BRILLIANCE OF LOUIS ARMSTRONG AND THE DOWN AND DIRTY, NEW ORLEANS SWANKINESS OF THELONIOUS MONK.

SON OF A SOUTHERN BAPTIST MINISTER & A FEMALE PIANIST, VOCALIST AND ORGANIST, WALLER WAS OBVIOUSLY BORN INTO THE MUSICAL LIFE. FOR A MAN OF OVER 300 POUNDS, HE SURE KNEW HOW TO SWING. AND THE GUY WROTE OVER 400 SONGS, MANY MANY OF THEM HUGE HITS.

HE JUST MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD, DAMMIT!

IN MY HUMBLE OPINION, WALLER'S GREATEST EFFORTS INCLUDE: YOUR FEETS TOO BIG, THIS JOINT IS JUMPIN', AIN'T MISBEHAVIN' AND CRAZY 'BOUT MY BABY.

5 out of 5 stars Mercy, mercy. Yes, yes........2005-08-18

My my.

Yes yes.

Let's see. There are 95 recordings here from a very fat man who died over sixty years ago with titles like "Thou Swell," "My Very Good Friend the Milkman," "Lookin' Good bt Feeling Bad," and "Christopher Columbus." "So gauche...so stupidly innoncent...so passe" one might assume.

And one would be totally wrong.

If you breathe...if you like kissing...if you like a good meal and a botle of red whiskey on a fall evening with a friend...if you love someone...if you love life, well, you will love this collection. I dare you to put it on and not feel better, not to sing along with this wonderful American.

Those people who manufacture "mood enhancing" prescription pills better watch out. This works better.

No less a figure than Ernest Hemingway was a Waller fan, according to an ex daughter-in-law. Hem would put 78's on his Victrola and sing along to "Your Feets Too Big." Now if that isn't an endearing post card from the last century, I'll kiss it in Times Square.

5 out of 5 stars Handful of Keys.......2005-08-02

I bought this package of four CD's about five months ago, and believe me, there are very few days go by when I don't have one or more playing on my stereo. The transfers from 78's is remarkable. If you like Waller, you gotta like this ... and I'm not misbehavin'. Buy it and smile, smile, smile. It's fabulous. Oh yes and it's a great price for four CD's each of which lasts over 70 minutes. Go get it ... now.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best of the series.......2004-10-06

We may now be in re-issue heaven and the PROPER BOX series are up to No 72 as at Sep 2004. To my ear, some of the music now sounds dated such as the bebop saxophone re-issues, or some of the swing music of the forties. Duke Ellington of any period but perhaps especially from 1926 to 1944 still seems brilliant to me, and modern. Similarly, Louis Armstrong seems immortal. And this PROPER BOX of FATS WALLER is in that company. I find it difficult to name a musician of such calibre who was also a consummate entertainer who could redeem some musical rubbish just by his performance. My first record was a 12" 78 which had BLUE TURNING GREY OVER YOU on one side HONEYSUCKLE ROSE on the other. Both these sides - works that almost define what it means to swing, which combine rhythm, harmony and melody in such a delicious combination, both recorded in 1937 - are included in this Box Set of four CD's. The accompanying Booklet has 48 pages of biography, posters, photos, recording details, and biographical information as well as notes accompanying the records by JOOP VISSER. My one disappointment is that the set contains no records of Mr Waller on a large organ has he did record some Spirituals in England which were stunning. (He is featured on organ and piano on a number of tracks in the set though I assume it is a Hammond). Some of the music - such as I'M ON A SEE-SAW - are classics of swing music; others - I BELIEVE IN MIRACLES made acceptable by Mr Waller: none are filler. For music lovers of 20th Century music, this is an essential purchase of a compleat musician at the peak of his powers exuding the joy of creating some of the best swing ever.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece!.......2007-04-29

The word "masterpiece" is often over-used in reviews here on Amazon, but in this case, it's certainly appropriate. Richard Dowling may be better known as a classical pianist, renowned for his interpretations of such romantic and impressionist composers Chopin and Ravel, but his sensitive touch transfers beautifully to these ragtime, stride, and early jazz selections. There are some familiar rags here from Scott Joplin, Eubie Blake, Euday L. Bowman, Felix Arndt, Zez Confrey, and others, but also some delightful obscurities such as Abram Chasins's "Rush Hour In Hong Kong," Gershwin's "Two Waltzes In C," and Ferde Grofé's previously unrecorded "Three Shades of Blue." Admittedly, much of the music on this CD falls outside the realm of so-called "classic ragtime," and leans more towards the 1920s/1930s "novelty" and Gershwin-esque classically-influenced jazz, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. As a long-time classic ragtime fan, I found the selections on this disc a refreshing change of pace from the usual fare. I'm particularly astounded by Dowling's performance of Bix Beiderbecke's "In A Mist." Aside from Bix's own solo piano recording of his most famous work, I consider Dowling's to be the definitive performance of the score as it was originally published (and I've heard several dozen solo piano recordings of "In A Mist"). Dowling's mastery of the impressionist style gives "In A Mist" a warmth and beauty I've never heard anywhere else. Forget Claude Bolling, forget Ralph Sutton, forget Dick Hyman, Dill Jones, Lincoln Mayorga, Ken Werner, or any other pianist you've heard play "In a Mist." They may be decent, but THIS is it! Having said that, I would have liked a little more "oomph" in Dowling's performances of Fats Waller's "Handful of Keys" or Eubie Blake's "Charleston Rag," but on the whole, this is a remarkable CD that I consider one of the highlights in my extensive ragtime collection. The recorded sound is brilliant--like sitting in the front row of a concert hall listening to a beautifully-tuned Steinway grand piano. No out-of-tune, rinky-dink upright here! Dowling treats the pieces with the respect they deserve, and his flawless technique and energetic performances make him one of the best ragtime pianists around today. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding CD for stride piano lovers.......2007-04-10

The creator of this CD did an excellent job, especially in case of the Art Tatum tracks. As a live playing imitator of Art Tatum cannot cope with his tempo, the special way how this CD has been produced overcomes this problem. Art Tatum sounds perfect as well as the two other stride pianists Fats Waller and James P. Johnson.

    Product Description

As both a soloist and former lead trumpet of the world-renowned Canadian Brass for five years, Jens Lindemann has developed a critically acclaimed career as an international virtuoso. This new solo CD is a perfect showcase for his talent. He is accompanied by pianists Jennifer Snow and Brad Ellis.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Solo Debut.......2006-09-12

Lindemann's musicality, technique, and showmanship is evident
here on a very high level. Of particular interest is
his very effective use of plunger to subtly modify his sound.
The Gershwin preludes are especially entertaining. He uses
the extreme high high register a bit more frequently than
I would wish, but with high range this strong, it's easy to
see why he would want to use it.

This is, overall, extremely musical playing. Minor quibbles
can be made about intonation in some spots, but the listener
will forgive these when the playing is so infectious and
the tone so fine. I found myself laughing on occasion because
I was having so much fun listening to what the artist was doing
with these pieces. It is apparent that Lindemann and his fine
accompanists were having a great time with this music. Buy this
    disc and you will too.

5 out of 5 stars First rate album!.......2006-03-06

Jens Lindemann really makes a name for himself with this album. Anyone who enjoys trumpet music will probably enjoy this. Jens is a true master at mixing jazz, pop and classical styles seamlessly. This album has a good mix of classical and jazz hits to suit anyone's taste. After first hearing Jens' beautiful tone when he played with the Canadian Brass, I was eagerly awaiting his first solo album. I had no idea his talent was so immense until I heard some of the songs on this album. His arrangement of Chopin's Etude No. 2 requires circular breathing for the entire piece. I think his variations on Amazing Grace are the best I've ever heard. There is even some insanely high stuff for those of you who like a little squealing now and then! ;)

    5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal Player!.......2005-12-01

Jens is one of the few trumpet players out there that can move with me a single note. There are some great tracks on this CD that showcase his technical brilliance, but most of the tracks show off his lyrical ability, especially the first track. My only personal complaint was with the choice of some of the 'pop' tracks - they just aren't really my kind of music, but Jens plays everything with wonderful clarity and fluidity (as expected).

This musical soundtrack is my favorite! It has a diverse offering of artists who range in vocals from a very robust and alluring tenor to enchanting soprano. The types of songs go from fun & upbeat to "somebody-please-get-me-a-tissue" blues. These selections will make you envision whatever scene/theme that is being performed and will force you to crawl into the number and savor/enjoy the fun or the blues of it.

I love it!! I believe you will, too.

Dizzy Gillespie claimed that "Fats could eat up a piano"--one of the clearest expressions of the great Waller's talent ever uttered by another master. But what's frustrating for all pianists about Waller was said by Fats himself in the middle of a vast piano solo that sounded as if he had four hands and two pianos going at once: "It's so easy when you knows how!" To add credence, the great Art Tatum declared "Fats ... that's where we all came from." To add credence listeners can experience, it's difficult to find a musician who cut as many records as Waller did in his short life of 39 years. Handful of Keys boasts previously unrecorded selections like "Stop Beatin' 'Round The Mulberry Bush," "My Best Wishes," and "What's the Matter with You," all of them masterfully performed. The biggest surprise here is "St. Louis Blues" done as a solo, in contrast to the early duet in March 1930 with Bennie Payne, then a member of Cab Calloway's orchestra. The solo version can render you unconscious because of both its stride and its luminous optimism. Fats's stride piano invokes a stomp and howl at (or with) anyone who can play so much piano and transmit such happiness through the music alone. The clever asides and burlesques of the rather simple-minded numbers RCA Victor forced him to record, of course, add to the hilarity, but the stupefyingly glorious wonder of Waller's technique and imagination are joyous. Handful of Keys is a keeper for all fans, be they Traditional, Bop, R&B, Rock, or whatever the present state of Jazz connotes. Fats is the cat who gave us many of the foundation stones of all jazz. --Daniel Bartlett Jr.

It is rare to find nice live sets with black musicians of this era, but to find live Fats Waller is a delight. Clearly they are having a ball playing, and you will have a ball listening. The sound quality is great (for recordings of this era), and the music is hot.

    5 out of 5 stars Hallelujah!.......2000-06-24

This is a special treat for Waller lovers. It's Fats Live, which gives you more of an idea what an entertaining genius he was. It includes alot of the patented wisecracks, quips, asides and humbugs, but it also features truly enjoyable music. His spiritual rendition of "Hallelujah" is especially a revelation. The sound is very clean, free of the usual hisses and pops you hear from vintage recordings. Fats is such a hepcat, the only thing that gives this away as vintage are the somewhat corny comments by the radio announcers. To be expected though, and it just illustrates how far the man was ahead of his time. Waller is my favorite artist and this is (currently) one of my favorite albums by in my opinion, the true King of Jazz.

    5 out of 5 stars great fats.......2000-06-23
