5 out of 5 stars Great vocal virtuosity.......2005-04-07

This is a great recording, by two great artists. Carole Farley is the ideal singer for Ned Rorem's songs. She spell out every
word and every nuance, giving each song and every poem their full character. The songs are a revelation. I recommend this recording without hesitation.

3 out of 5 stars Confuzzled.......2004-01-03

While these song are GREAT...I cannot get over Carole Farley; her voice is so affected (kind of like a sprechstimme; overly dramatic...). I love the fact that Rorem himself is playing the piano, and as a singer, the catalogue of songs is good to have...but cant say I could ever manage getting over Farley's affectation. There are far superior recordings out there.

5 out of 5 stars An American Composer of Art Song.......2003-04-02

American popular song, whether standards, show tunes, jazz, blues, or rock, is one of our country's most visible artistic achievements. American classical (or Art) songs are much less known. Ned Rorem (b. 1923) is probably the greatest American composer in this unfamiliar medium. Rorem is sometimes dubbed the "American Schubert."

This disc features 32 of Ned Rorem's songs for voice and piano. Soprano Carole Farley is the accomplished singer, and Ned Rorem himself plays the piano. The disc is special because it features settings of the works of American poets. The CD begins with 9 settings of poems by the mid-twentieth century poet, Theodore Roethke, and concludes with settings of 5 poems by Walt Whitman. The disc also includes settings of poems by William Carlos Williams, Gertrude Stein, and Paul Goodman, among others. Thus the disc combines in a special way American creative effort in poetry and in music.

Rorem's songs are declamatory in style. Typically, the voice line delivers the text of the poetry in a sort of chant. The relationship between the voice line and the piano is far from Schubertian. Generally, the piano takes a separate line and accentuates the voice by means of large chords or by runs or by other comments and punctuation on the voice. The texts are well set and the music is effective. There are some unusual harmonies with jazz and blues influences. Rorem's piano accompanyment on this disc gives the recording a sense of authenticity -- we get a good idea of how the composer wants his songs to be conveyed.

The disc includes excellent program notes and texts of all the songs. Naxos has received deservedly high praise for its "American Classics" series which makes much music written by Americans available on CD at a low price. This disc includes some lovely, little-known songs. It is an excellent introduction to the American art song and to the music of Ned Rorem.

3 out of 5 stars more German than Rorem.......2002-07-20

I've been a Rorem fan since hearing a highschool friend perform some of his work in her college recital. His startling, atonal songs were an instant revelation. For years there were few reliable CDs of his vocal work. A scandal considering his reputation rests more on his art songs and chamber music than on his orchestral pieces. This Naxos entry of a wide overview of his best songs is thus quite welcome, due largely to its availability, wide distribution and professional packaging (he's had some shoddy issues before with incorrect liner notes, etc.; the challenge of the low budget).

I can't call myself an unalloyed fan of soprano Carole Farley however. Her delivery here recalls the speak-singing style of German 12-tone composers (a specialty of hers), and can sound melodramatic, especially when she rushes the more delicate passages.

I prefer Rorem's softer, more melodious French side, the one that descends from Impressionism and is more warmly emotive. While Farley loses the shading of some of the more fragile songs, she is well-suited to the longer, more forceful pieces. I've heard many readings of "Early in the Morning" (one of Rorems most popular songs) by male and female vocalists, and its tale of wistful nostalgia is muted by Farley's direct approach. However, she nails "My Papa's Waltz," a fractured setting for a Roethke poem about a frightened child forced to dance with a drunken father. Here her acting skills come to the fore, and she perfectly captures the tipsy madness of the song. Rorem can be quite theatrical himself on occasion. She does almost as well with "See How they love me," a ballad with a regular pace that allows her assertive style to breathe.

At any rate it's great to hear these lovely songs in a recent (2000) recording, accompanied (rather emphatically, but perhaps he's matching his theatrical singer) by Rorem himself.

The similar Susan Graham album is more to my taste, but this is a more than competent bargain set.

4 out of 5 stars delightful art songs.......2002-01-02

rorem's songs are amazing, and naxos has done well
to group them by poet. the complete settings of roethke
are particularly compelling and edgey.

carole farley's voice is lovely, but her phrasing
and willingness to push her voice seems
a big departure from the styling of art songs i've
heard by poulenc and somers.

this takes some getting used to- at least 3 or 4 complete
listen-throughs in my case. her voice is almost jazzy,
kind of like early recordings by holly cole.

anyway, rorem accompanies her on piano so obviously
this reading fits with his intent; his playing is also delightful.

one small quibble- although there are 32 songs, the CD is
57 minutes- brief by naxos standards.

The founder of Windham Hill Records, Will Ackerman has stretched his sound occasionally with different instrumentation, but Hearing Voices is an entirely new approach. Picking up on his uncredited production of Samite's Stars to Share album, Ackerman enlists a group of singers that includes Samite, Happy Rhodes, Curtis King, and Heather Rankin to intone his quiet meditations, sometimes with English lyrics, other times with Native tongues and imaginary dialects. As a result, Hearing Voices has a hymnlike quality on tracks like "Somewhere in All This Green" and "Fear Not Mary." Rankin gets to do some ecstatic Gaelic chanting on "Walk with Me," which also features Ackerman's only electric guitar lead on record. Ackerman tosses in a couple of wistful acoustic guitar solos, but it's the vocal tunes that continue to haunt on this quietly daring departure. --John Diliberto

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Combining two of my favorite artists.......2006-03-21

I am a long time fan of William Ackerman and purchased this CD the day that I heard that it was out. I am also a big fan of Happy Rhodes and upon finding that they had collaborated I knew that I had to get this CD. While certainly different for both artists I find this a strong addition to their works.

This is strong, quiet and beautiful work, and quoting my daughter, "this music makes me so happy that I cry."

5 out of 5 stars The Road Less Traveled.......2003-11-22

It is an affirmation of my over all opinion of Will Ackerman's work that, after something of an artistic hiatus, he can branch from instrumental music to song writing, and manage to capture a Grammy nomination with his efforts. I only recently realized that Ackerman is recording again, after a period of 10 years that saw only one new album. Now that I've listened to Hearing Voices, I can report that it is surprisingly compelling, while being quite a bit different than what I expected.

Why unexpected? From what I have seen of Ackerman's work I anticipated that the music would have strong folk overtones, similar to what he does as a soloist, and even in an ensemble. What I found is that, while he continues to use melody over a rhythmic chordal architecture, he has reduced the amount of arpegiation that marked his work and turned his focus to the intermingling of thematic voices. The catalog of languages that the performers use is extensive - Luganda, Gaelic, Arabic, Hebrew, Italian, Hindi, Sanscrit, English, and even invented. Obviously the intent isn't to produce an 'international' album, but to emphasize the importance of the sounds of the words aside from lyrics.

The result, however, is quite a bit different thant that of other musicians who have investigated this form (such as Vas and Wim Mertons). The selection presented is self-consistent - they play against each other smoothly, and it is very easy to approach this album as a work in its entirety rather than just a collection of works. As usual, Ackerman demonstrates his ability to get musicions to work together to create something that is more than a brilliant solo performance. That, coupled with the usual perfection we expect from Windham Hill productions, makes this one of the must have albums for those of use who like soft jazz and new age work.

5 out of 5 stars Simply --- great!!!.......2002-11-20

I have been a Will Ackerman for a few years now and when I saw this CD in the store, I snatched it up right away. It is definitely a departure from his previous work but still maintains the acoustic style that is defines his style. This CD has a prominent place in my collection and makes for some great driving music.

4 out of 5 stars Ethereal voices blending with soulful guitar.......2002-06-08

Unlike most of the reviewers hear, I am new to William Ackerman's music, and this doubtlessly helped me appreciate this album because I didn't have anything to compare it with.

This is uplifting music, suitable for meditation, going to sleep by, or just sitting and imaging. The non-English lyrics serve to let the music and the sound speak for itself.

The voice of the guitar is quite distinguishable here, and is not drowned out or even diminished by the voices. There is a blending.

Nor is the music monotonous. Some is strictly Idyllic, but some has more of an upbeat. This isn't to say that it's envigorating, but it is deep and ultimately satisfying.

There are those who prefer Ackerman without voices, or only his own. But for those who enjoy an Enya type quality with expert guitar blending in, this is for you.

5 out of 5 stars unbelieveable.......2002-03-31

the beauty of william ackerman's work is that it comes straight from the heart. i won't dwell on technical issues here but i love his music for this simple reason: it is beautifully haunting and very emotional. like a previous reviewer, i have found his music inspiring and gratifying. so it only come naturally that he would finally feature vocals on an album. and while his guitar may not be the spotlight of most of the pieces on this album, it is quietly there, not overpowering. i have one word to describe this: breathtaking. buy this album now!!!!

          Album Description

Bucking the trend of going for a "style", or "sound", Hearing Voices focused, first and foremost, on making great music, and followed that star wherever it took them. The result is an unexpected combination of musical styles bound together only by the strength of their melodies and lyrics. The songs range in style from acoustic roots rock, to hyper punk, smooth blues, and melodic hard rock. So, good luck trying to force this one into a narrow category!

Perhaps it's all a byproduct of how they formed. Hearing Voices was formed when a professed studio geek and a dynamic rock stage veteran pulled together the hottest players in their area to create an album they could be proud of. The result is a showcase of writing talent, and performance muscle.

From the sweet, sentimental "In Your Eyes" and "I Paint You", to the angry, defiant, hard rock of "Breakdown" and "Corruptible" this album runs the gamut of style and emotion. "Wish I Could Fly", is reminiscent of the smooth blues produced by Robert Cray, or Dire Straits, while "Spaces In Between", evokes singer/storytellers like Shawn Mullins and Bob Dylan.

Pick any one or two songs, and you might compare Hearing Voices to Train, Vertical Horizon, or 3 Doors Down. But, the collection, taken as a whole, covers more ground than you'll find in most commercial releases.

4 out of 5 stars Hearing Voices Seek Their Balance.......2002-04-25

I was gradually won over by this new work from unfamiliar artists. Their sound is cohesive and driving. They vary the flavor of their songs and this serves them well. This group could be around to stay, given the right direction and influences. There was, however, a distinct gap in what I thought the vocals needed to provide on several songs. This could be overcome easily and then, look out!
