More than just a significantly expanded soundtrack to the new DVD edition of the band's 1974 documentary, the five discs here (taken from a five-night stand at San Francisco's fabled Winterland in October) also document the end of an early Dead era, capturing extensive highlights from the band's final gigs before beginning a performance hiatus that would last until 1976. Typically expansive in scope, yet tightly focused in the interplay of its performances, the anthology kicks off with a brisk slate of upbeat early favorites and then settles back as the band wends its way through spacious, jazzy jams ("Eyes of the World," "Playing in the Band," "Weather Report Suite"), roots-conscious workouts, and the fervent mysticism of Deadhead touchstones like "Dark Star." The recordings also capture the return to action of drummer Mickey Hart after a three-plus-year layoff, and showcase separate percussion solo interludes from both Hart and Bill Kreutzmann. Containing a considerable number of rich live takes that failed to make the DVD set's bonus outtake disc, this is a an expansive, riveting evocation of the band's early '70s prime--a must for any dedicated Deadhead. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

In October 1974 -- at the peak of their global fame -- the Grateful Dead played five consecutive shows at San Francisco's legendary Winterland. Those dates were recorded and filmed for the 1977 motion picture release The Grateful Dead Movie. This five-disc soundtrack presents all of the music from the movie, plus 32 bonus tracks, including 20 songs exclusive to this set.

Many historic jams that were edited down for the film are restored in their entirety, including the 60-minute blockbuster jam featuring "Sugar Magnolia," "He's Gone," "Jam," "Caution Jam," "Drums," "Space," "Truckin'," "Black Peter," and "Sunshine Daydream." Also included is the now-complete 32-minute "Playing In The Band," cut to half that length on screen.

A 24-page booklet contains rare photos and memorabilia from the film.

3 out of 5 stars Alas, not nearly as fine as one would hope.......2007-03-05

Listening to this, it becomes painfully evident that the Dead by this time were rapidly running out of steam. Despite the vaunted "Wall of Sound" the band sounds "thin" with too much space around each instrument. Unusually, the strongest aspect of this set is Garcia's singing-- which is saying something, considering how inconsistent the band's vocals could be. Yes, there are a handfull of very nice performances scattered across these discs, but overall, compared to "Ladies and Gentlemen..." from 71, "Steppin' Out England 72", or "One from the Vault" there is a noticeable reduction in energy, enthusiasm, and cohesion. If you are a Deadhead who buys a multi-cd set just to get a few "hot" versions of your favorite tunes and are willing to ignore the rest, then this review won't mean a thing. For those who prefer to save their hard-earned bread for more consistently satisfying efforts, this may be safely regarded as non-essential.

5 out of 5 stars Just Buy It!.......2007-02-07

Don't go another minute without this thing. A "Casey Jones" for the ages and so much more.

4 out of 5 stars Not Perfect, but very listenable.......2007-01-28

More than just a soundtrack.

I purchased this box set less than a month after my wife bought the Golden Road and Beyond Description box sets for me. To which she stated: "Don't you have enough Grateful Dead already." Well, the last month or so I've been listening to pretty much nothing but Grateful Dead and this 6 and half hour box set has been in the car or on the stereo for the last couple of weeks (there's a lot to digest here).

The sound on this set is exceptional and Garcia's voice is the best I've heard of all the albums and bootlegs I have. There are moments on some 80's boots I have where Garcia just simply can't carry the tune without losing tone or tune and it gets very distracting. I find it interesting that the set begins with the encore "US Blues." Nice rendition and again, Garcia's vocals are in great shape here and throughout the five discs. The highlight on the first disc in the exceptional "Eyes of the World" and the tender "China Doll." I was pleased to see a great number of tracks were from their most recent From the Mars Hotel album. Then comes the almost 32 minute "Playing in the Band." When I first got into Grateful Dead music I mostly listened to bootlegs and so was able to hear the long jams that made them famous. In later years I realized that most of these long jams are just improvisation over one chord and my, does that get tedious after a few hundred minutes. I feel bad for Keith Godchaux and Bob Weir as they plink or strum the one chord for the next 20 minutes. Perhaps the hallucinogenic drugs the crowd and the band used aided in the enjoyment of this, but my thought is a great set of music will stand up to anyone's ears, particularly those ears who have not enhanced or dulled their senses by the usage of such chemicals. That being said, I still enjoy the extended jamming, as I am fascinated that the band is able to carry on for so long and not lose themselves or the audience.

Disc two begins with "Scarlet Begonia's," one of my favorite Grateful Dead songs, especially when coupled with "Fire on the Mountain." Of course "Fire" was not written at this time period, so you get a jam still in progress song. Garcia messes up the lyric on this one, and the end jam on this really goes nowhere and doesn't have the fire that later version of the song receive (check out The Closing of Winterland to see what I mean). "He's Gone," a fan favorite I guess, and one of mine as well, but this version and the version on Disc 4 are just a little too slow for my tastes. Certainly executed well, but the tempo doesn't serve the song justice. Then there's the 30 minutes of jamming that's really just a long version of "The Other One." This is Grateful Dead at their trippiest and probably most psychedelic, outside of the "Space" jams that came later on. The highlight of this disc for me though is the incredible version of "Casey Jones." Excellent rendition.

Disc 3 begins with what is for me a relatively new song. Since I never owned any of the albums other than Terrapin Station and American Beauty, I was unfamiliar with this song and I really enjoy this version. This track is an excellent set closer which brings us into the "Dark Star"- "Morning Dew" jam. I did miss the concluding verse of "Dark Star," but the psychedelic jamming on this track is well worth the listen, and I've always loved the way they played "Morning Dew," and now it has even more relevance now that I know that the song is about the last two people on earth after nuclear devastation. This version is certainly one of the better ones available. (Check out the version on Cornell, May 1977). This disc ends like it's the end of a concert--four plus hours of music with the fan favorite pairing of "Not Fade Away" and "Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad." The songs are not particularly great but they're not bad either. They're staple of a Grateful Dead show and therefore fit well into this set.

Disc four is like another concert (although we all know the tracks were pulled from 5 days worth of shows). I really enjoy the version of "Uncle John's Band" here and "Big Railroad Blues" is quite good as well. The Dolly Parton song, "Tomorrow Is Forever" is a special treat because Grateful concerts were an ever changing entity as the audience and I'm certain even the band sometimes did not know what they would play next. The last part of disc four is the Sugar Magnolia/Sunshine Daydream medley that is certainly worth the listen although drum solos get very old if one is not at the show. There are times when I wish they would just edit out the over-wrought, irritating, slow down the flow of the album drum solos. (Check out the 19-minute "Rhythm Devils" on The Closing of Winterland). It's like, "enough already." To me, drum solos are "You had to be there" moments.

The final disc is taken entirely from the October 20th show with Mickey Hart's return. The best thing on this set is the marvelous version of "Wharf Rat" which is one of my favorite Grateful tracks. Then we get the encores of "Johnny B. Goode," "Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo" (one of the best song titles EVER and an excellent song at that) and "We Bid You Good Night." And then it ends.

I find it amazing that an expansive, exhaustive set such as this can be so incredible. It is certainly a MUST for Grateful Dead fans--I think the casual Dead fan would find much on this set to be happy about as well and should be on the list of albums to buy. This may not appeal to the masses, but on the whole it's worth checking out because there is simply no group out their in the 70's that jammed like this, maybe Led Zeppelin, but I can't think of anyone else. Overall very good and a set I know I'll go back too often.

4 out of 5 stars An almost perfect collection from Winterland 10/74.......2006-12-01

First, let me say that the sound quality on this is execellent. The only problem that I guess I have is that once again alot of the jams have been edited. David Lemeiux (the band's vault archivest) said after the release that this was originally going to be a seven disc set instead of five (what it now is) but the higher ups thought that seven was too much and so it was edited down to five. Aside from some cool stuff that's still missing from this run of shows, this set is great. Highlights are many but don't miss Eyes Of The World, Playing In The Band, Dark Star-Morning Dew, The Other One into almost everything, Uncle John's Band, and the Truckin' jam.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the price.......2006-05-14

This 5-disc set has earned a place at the front of my shelf of Dead CDs. I place this recording up there with Live at the Fillmore East, and Harpur College.

This concert is also a good "transition" concert - the band had just said good-bye to Pigpen, and taken in Keith and Donna Godchaux. Although my personal tastes usually didn't favor Keith and Donna (I missed Pigpen pretty bad), I think they did pretty well on this particular concert.

I recommend this CD with my highest rating - *****

3 out of 5 stars So, so.......2007-06-08

There are some nice songs on this CD but it is certainly a stretch to call it the all time greatest movie songs. Many are songs you never heard of from movies you never heard of.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE FOR THE COLLECTOR.......2005-10-11

WHAT A NICE SUPRISE, I ALL MOST MISSED THIS ONE. I SAW IT IN A STORE BUT DIDN'T GET IT. I GOT TO SAMPLE IT TODAY AND NOW WISH I
HAD GOT IT THE FIRST TIME I SAW IT. PUT UP YOUR FEET AND RELAX AWHILE THIS ONE IS SMOOTH, CALMS THE NERVES. WE ALL NEED THAT TIME OUT THESE DAYS. IT'S A KEEPER AND THE PRICE IS RIGHT!!!!
A REAL NICE COMPILATION, SOMEONE HAS GOOD TASTE...

5 out of 5 stars Buy the double version CD as the best songs are on the 2nd C.......2003-08-03

I have this album but it comes with two CD's. If amazon's version really only comes with one I would recommend going to an actual CD store as I've never seen this CD with just one disc before. It always has two and the cover is black with everything else exactly the same.

Two discs of music provide a vast range songs. Some slow, some fast, some good, some not. The thing you want from soundtracks is for your imagination to be taken back to those movies when the song is playing and to be honest not all these songs do that but there are a substantial number of good ones that do.

The advantage this album has over similar ones is that all the songs on here are by the original artists, the same ones you actually here in the films. No doubt you will not like all the songs on here and some do appear on a lot of compilation albums but with 40 songs you surely will find enough you will enjoy.

Excellent 80's songs such as Ghostbusters, Take My Breathe Away and When The Going Gets Tough (The Tough Get Going) along with 70's classics like, Mustang Sally and Knockin' on Heaven's Door when combined with 90's movie hits such as The Shoop Shoop Song and Philadelphia make this a huge album.

3 out of 5 stars This is not even the greatest movie songs from the 1990s.......2003-07-26

Ah, the joys of hyperbole. If this is indeed "The All Time Greatest Movie Songs" then you would have to believe that the medium was invited in the mid-1980s when "Ruthless People" came out, because that is the only film not from the 1990s in this collection (and I vividly remember going to see "A Hard Day's Night" and "Lawrence of Arabia" in the 1960s). Would it have been so very wrong to say this collection represented the greatest movie songs of the 1990s? Well, yes, because that would not be true either.

Here you will find a #1 song from the Billboard charts, "A Whole New World" from "Aladdin" performed by Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle, an Oscar winning song, "Streets of Philadelphia" by Bruce Springsteen, and the album starts off with a song that accomplished both feats, "My Heart Will Go On," Celine Dion's end title tune from "Titanic." But the best selling movie song from the decade is not here: Whitney Houston's cover of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You" from "The Bodyguard," which spent 14 weeks at #1. You do get Michael Jackson doing "Will You Be There (Theme from 'Free Willy')," but I do not think that is a good thing.

Overall the artists are better than the tunes. You have Lauryn Hill, Sophie B. Hawkins, Michael Bolton, Gloria Estefan, Kenny Loggins, Barbra Streisand, Bryan Adams, Billy Joel, Des'ree, and Luther Vandross. However, I bet you would be hard pressed to correctly identify half of the songs those artists sing on this album. Maybe part of the problem is that except for "Men in Black" by Will Smith, none of songs double as the title of the film. You might be able to whistle the theme from "Patton" or sing the title tune from your favorite Bond movie, but could you even name what song would be on the album if I told you it was from "William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet" or "Simon Birch"?

The final nail in the coffin of this collection is going to be that you probably already have the best songs on "All Time Greatest Movie Songs." That means chances are remote you will find three or four songs you really want to add to your music library.

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Collection of Original Artists' Songs !!.......2001-09-26

Finally, a collection of movie music by the original soundtrack artists! This is an wonderful selection; particularly "Streets of Philadelphia" by Bruce Springsteen, "Go the Distance" by Michael Bolton, and "I Want to Spend My Lifetime Loving You" by Marc Anthony & Tina Arena. I would Highly Recommend this CD to anyone looking for a fine selection of movie songs - THIS is the one to have!

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!!!.......2007-07-03

I just listened to this CD for the first time yesterday. If you love the Boston Pops, classical music, amazing "NEW" arrangements of old favorites, and Allan Sherman's crazy humor, this is the CD for you. My husband and I laughed ourselves silly.

I will never think of "Peter and the Wolf" in the same way again, and Allan's creative genius is clearly demonstrated in his variations on "How Dry I Am." Then, he seems to access all the thoughts you've ever had on the "never ending" finales to classical symphonies -- right on target!

I have loved "Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah" and many of Allan's other famous parodies for years -- don't want to admit how many, but I had never heard this album. It is now my favorite!

As to the sound -- it is crisp and clean -- even when heard through a car stereo.

Buy it. You won't be sorry. (Heck, I'm buying several more to give as gifts!)

5 out of 5 stars Peter and the Commissar.......2007-01-22

Of all the CD's (and LP's) I have listened to over the years, this is without doubt my favorite. Allan Sherman was a pretty funny comic in the early 60's and The Boston Pops were (and are), well, The Boston Pops. This was a very clever combination of a funny guy, a world renowned orchestra and a witty story and music line. Classical music lovers with a sense of humor will love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars A very funny piece.......2007-01-18

I first heard this back in the early 1970s and found it again. The title track is a very funny piece of satire and I enjoyed listening to it again after such a long time.

I got a second copy for a friend and he was absolutely delighted when he received it.

Allan Sherman did some great comedy pieces and this is certainly one of his best, I think.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-07-09

For years I was only familiar with this recording from a promotional album (only partial tracks and interview snippets) my Grandfather had and was excited to see that the full version was available on CD. I still love it but after having heard the "best bits" version some of the new (to me) stuff feels like filler. Regardless, the "best bits" are very funny and the album - I mean - CD is worth getting. Even my boys (ages 10 and 12) enjoy it....Hey, don't forget to pick up the Allan Sherman Boxed Set as well...it's another family favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Classical Gas.......2006-01-30

This is the most hilarious CD with a classical bent I have ever heard. Allen Sherman is gifted when it comes to imaginative uses of classical themes. Anyone who has heard any of these famous melodies will laugh themselves silly when they hear what is done to them! It's a super pick-me-up when I'm feeling blue. It's a must-hear for all you classical music buffs!

Although the stellar lineup includes Celine Dion, Seal, Faith Hill, Natalie Cole, Cher, Luther Vandross, and others, For Our Children, Too is really a lullaby album and its predecessor is a party record. There are more ballads, more R&B singers, and more arrangements mired in overproduction. That said, if you want a gentler collection of songs, this might be your first choice. Seal turns in a poignant rendition of "Puff the Magic Dragon," while Natalie Cole's "Both Sides Now" shows how universal that old Joni Mitchell classic really is. James Taylor and Carly Simon's memorable hit "Mockingbird" is also featured, along with Cher doing a predictable interpretation of "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes" from Cinderella. Celine gives "Brahm's Lullaby" her trademark Dion treatment and Luther Vandross turns the protest anthem "If I Had a Hammer" into a moving meditation on peace and equality. Did someone say this music might be too sophisticated for kids? Still, it's for a great cause. --Martin Keller

5 out of 5 stars Must have CD.......2005-10-21

I bought this cd for a friend many years ago. I am now having a baby of my own. This cd was a must have for my own child!!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect CD for all my children........2004-12-11

I bought this CD 8 years ago when my daughter was born. She listened to it each night up until her brother was born in 2002. Now we're expecting to pass it on to their new sibling in Aug of 2005. Amazing how one CD can put 3 different children to sleep so peacefully!

1 out of 5 stars For Our Children is much better.......2004-09-23

I was so disappointed with this CD I am writing my very first review for Amazon. The first CD in this "collection" is so fun and very charming. This one lacks on many levels.

5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2004-01-30

We received this CD as a gift when our first child was born. I have bought it for all our friends who have babies since then. It contains the most beautiful renditions of many songs from our own childhood. Everyone who has received it, loves it!!! In addition, the few songs we were unfamiliar with turned out to be some of our favorites!

5 out of 5 stars kids music adults can listen to.......2003-11-23

This CD, along with the original For Our Children, contains artists you know, singing songs you remember from your childhood. We had to replace our first version of this CD, because the kids played it so often that they scratched it beyond any use at all. My 5 year old son knows all the words to If I had a Hammer, and You are my Sunshine, and his favorite of all time is Puff the Magic Dragon- this version is the best I've ever heard. My personal favorite is the Elton John song about a boy who first meets his newborn brother. Stop now and go get this CD- you won't be sorry!!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, sensitive playing...........2003-11-02

Ah, reader, consider this album. I have been listening to Bayless music for years, from Bach Meets the Beatles to his crazy happy birthday album in a dozen styles (Stravinsky's Rite of Birthday, a favorite), but this one has something special going on. The playing is so beautifully, and sensitively played that one is really swept away by the original movie tune, interwound with a classical piece, so seamless and amazing. One of my all-time favorite albums.

5 out of 5 stars John Bayless is awesome.......2003-10-13

He's such a great talent, I was lucky enough to meet him almost 2 years ago. I got this CD autographed! :) He was such a nice person and performed so well on the stage. Buy this album, it's really awesome!

5 out of 5 stars The One CD in My Collection I Never Tire of Listening To.......2001-03-24

John Bayless had a vision for this album---to combine the most beautiful classical pieces along with the most romantic and engaging movie themes of all time. The arrangements and the way in which he weaves the varous pieces together, sometimes playing both themes simultaneously, are incredible. They lift you up and carry you away. The various instrumental additions (such as the guitar in track 2, drums in track 6, strings in track 5, the sound of the wind in track 4) add just the right touch---lightly sprinkled in when needed. As a professional pianist myself, I also appreciate his considerable technique and the emotion with which he infuses his music. Anyone who likes classical music and movies should own this CD. Anyone who has friends who like classical music and movies should purchase this CD for them. They will love you for it. It is my favorite CD. I never tire of listening to it.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous arrangements. Very dramatic and melodic........1999-11-16

Don't be scared off by the "clown-like" picture on the cover. This album, by a true piano virtuoso/arranger, blends familiar movie and light classical melodies together into unique arrangements. Every time it's been on while I have guests, someone always asks "What's that beautiful music?"

5 out of 5 stars Moved from cassete to CD.......2007-02-19

After 10 years of babying the cassete of this album decided to look for a CD form. Glad to have found it! Disney needs to put out this album again. A real change from the nasty kids music out today. THE BEST KIDS ALBUM EVER!

5 out of 5 stars Best of the best.......2006-06-21

I got this tape for my daughter 15 years ago, and still remember her imitating Little Richard from her carseat! I am also an elementary classroom and music teacher, and found this to be the most enjoyable children's tape we owned. We never got tired of it; in fact, since ours disappeared, I'm ordering a new one as well as one for my newest nephew. I encourage any parent to get one of these while they're still around!

5 out of 5 stars Oldie but Goodie.......2004-10-16

I had this tape when my oldest daughter was born in '91. I wish it were still in print, so to speak. It was great having kids songs sung by contemporary artists who created fun recordings that didn't grate on your nerves after hours of listening to kids' songs. I now have a new baby & can't find my tape so want a new copy to keep us both entertained.

5 out of 5 stars A taste of the isles.......2007-05-30

America has had an infatuation with all things Irish for decades. Irish pubs, food, festivals, and holidays all find widespread acceptance in America. Likewise, Irish music is one of the most popular ethnic music styles in America, finding widespread appreciation. This album provides great recordings of many famous Irish and Scottish classical themes. The music is performed by Keith Lockhart (John Williams replacement) and the Bostom Pops Orchestra, in Boston, the home of the Irish in America. The music on this CD range from dramatic (Rob Roy), martial (Scotland the Brave), folksy (Itsbynne Reel), to lively (Scottish dances). The music includes scores from the distant past (Irish symphony) to more recent works from the likes of the stage (Riverdance) and Hollywood (Braveheart). The sounds are great, the sound quality is great, and the music selection is wonderful. I highly recommend this album.

5 out of 5 stars The Best CD Ever!!!.......2006-06-03

I listen to this CD all the time. I like how it has a mixture of tunes of celtic origin and how the orchestra seems to put an extra...something to all the songs. Being a bagpiper myself, I would prefer a little more of the Highland Bagpipes though. Also, I think Keith Lockhart's poses are kind of girly on the CD case. But still, I thought the music was excelent!

3 out of 5 stars audio test, too.......2005-06-27

I find the album overall pleasant enough, but the most remarkable thing on it is the HUGE drumbeats on quiet track 4 following 1:21. They are very low (under 30 Hz) and very loud (a few dB under digital full-scale). Anyone who wants to test his or her system's bass capabilities and not have to play movie explosions and the like should check it out. I do not know of many music CDs with that kind of signal on them.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Wedding Music.......2003-12-17

When my husband and I got married this summer I walked in to the song Magh Seola and we walked out together to Pesante. The rest of the album was played while the guests were waiting for things to get started. We got so many comments about the great music we had at our wedding. The music is very powerful and beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars A Scotish Boston.......2003-07-21

Excellent cd and compilation by Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops. I have always been a huge fan of them, and this just strengthened my affinity for them. I am a serious musician and am extremely impressed with the style and portrayal of the celtic music culture. Even my friends and family who know nothing about music other than listening to it for pure pleasure are in love with it. A great buy!

5 out of 5 stars It's Morphin Time.......2005-07-23

While Power Rangers is not typically held in high regard among most people, I honestly believe that, if willing to looking beyond the fact that this is a soundtrack album for a "Power Ranger" movie, most people will consider this to be a quite excellent collection of Rock N Roll music.
For me, the best tracks are...
2. "Higher Ground"-Red Hot Chili Peppers
4. "Are You Ready!?"-DEVO
7. "Dreams"-Van Halen
9. "SenSurround"-They Might Be Giants

5 out of 5 stars The best songs on this cd .......2004-09-19

I USUALLY JUST REVIEW WHAT I THINK IS THE BEST MATERIAL AND THIS IS ONE OF THEM ESPECIALLY WITH VAN HALEN'S "DREAMS", RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS' "HIGHER GROUND", AND AT LAST, THE BEST SONG ON THIS CD, "SENSURROUND" BY THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS. I JUST KEEP LISTENING TO THAT OVER AND OVER.

4 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Soundtracks Ever!!!.......2004-02-11

This is one of the best movie soundtracks I have ever heard! It has great bands like TMBG, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Van Halen. I gave it 4 stars cause all of them are nt the best songs ever. In my opinion SenSurround by They Might Be Giants is the greatest song on the CD. I give this CD 4 stars and it is marvelous!

The original Yippie, Abbie Hoffman left little room for compromise. His combative activism eventually forced him underground and guaranteed him a place in the lexicon of alternative Sixties culture. The soundtrack features both original 1960s protest music from Phil Ochs, Edwin Starr, and Country Joe and the Fish and remakes of classic songs from an impressive list of modern musicians. The reinterpretations are strong. Steve Earle and Sheryl Crow belt out the Chambers Brothers' "Time Has Come Today" with a punk edge. Bonnie Raitt has never sounded more relaxed, underlining the somber sentiments of Bob Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" with a gentle, tremolo-ed guitar. Dylan's farewell to protest, "My Back Pages," is given a majestic reading by Joan Osborne and Jackson Browne, with a funereal organ haunting the track. Most appropriate is Ani DiFranco covering Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land" with her usual dose of idiosyncrasy. --Rob O'Connor

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Steal Track #1?.......2007-07-07

This is generally just an OK soundtrack - except for the 1st song "Time Has Come Today" by Sheryl Crow and Steve Earle which is just... phenomenal. Actually, IMHO, it is one of the great covers of all time and alone is worth the cost of the CD.

5 out of 5 stars One of those rare soundtracks..........2004-09-27

This is one of those rare soundtracks that actually has vision, direction and cohesiveness. It consists mostly of updated versions of classic songs. Steve Earle & Sheryl Crow team up for the Chambers Brothers classic "Time". Other interesting team-ups are Joan Osborne & Jackson Browne covering Bob Dylan's "My Back Pages" and Eric Clapton, Billy Preston & Ringo Starr doing John Lennon's "Power to the People". Bonnie Raitt does a beautiful cover of Dylan's "It's All Over Now Baby Blue". Ani DiFranco covers two songs, Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land" and Phil Och's "When I'm Gone". Timothy B. Schmidt rocks with CS&N's "Carry On". And last but not least, Mary Chapin Carpenter does a very bluesy and sexy version of Donovan's "Mellow Yellow" that would have been a great single at AAA formats. There are also a few originals - Phil Och's: I Ain't Marching Anymore, Country Joe and the Fish: Superbird & Fell Like I'm Fixin' To Die Rag, and Edwin Starr: War.

4 out of 5 stars Quality Covers.......2003-01-04

This is a soundtrack which updates some classic songs and brings back a few golden oldies. For me, the greatest hit is the absolute blow your socks off version of "Power to the People" which Eric Burdon and Billy Preston nail. Besides being an unlikely pairing, the two give what was a second-tier John Lennon song red carpet treatment that rivals the master musician's with Burdon's empassioned vocals and Preston's pounding keyboards! Equally as magical is Bonnie Raitt's cool bluesy reading of Bob Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue." "The highway is for gamblers ... take what you have gathered from coincidence," she croons magically. I have this tune recorded by Joan Baez, the Byrds, Judy Collins, Richie Havens, Barry McGuire, the Animals and of course, the songwriter. Raitt shines! The other Dylan pairing with Jackson Browne and Joan Osborne's version of "My Back Pages" is weighted only by Steve Earle's somber organ throughout the piece. Mary Chapin Carpenter's wacky version of Donovan's "Mellow Yellow" is also making me hit for the repeat button with her little warble, "I'm just mad about 14; she's just mad about me." Steve Earle and Sheryl Crow do a great job of "Time Has Come Today"; and it's interesting to hear the female vocal on the song. The Phil Ochs track and Country Joe's "Fixing" track are thematically essential for the film and sound great. All in all, this is a soundtrack that has great focus and unity. U snooze U lose! Enjoy!

This CD works for more than those of us who were teenagers when this music was first released. The Steve Earle/Sheryl Crow collaboration (Time Has Come Today) is a more contemplative treatment of this song. Bonnie Raitt shines (It's All Over Now, Baby Blue) with a bluesy, heartfelt rendering of this Dylan classic. Phil Ochs, Edwin Starr, and Country Joe & The Fish are here for authenticity, to balance the "newness" of Ani DiFranco, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Joan Osborne. I applaud the artist selection as more daring than would have been expected.

See the soundtrack for "1969" for a collection of original songs and associated artists from this era.
