another winner from Naxos.......2007-02-21

This is another winning compilation from Naxos. My only comment is to provide a heads-up regarding the track list in the booklet. CD 1 puts the Leonin "Viderunt Omnes" on six tracks, while the booklet leaves room for only one. Thus, add five to booklet tracks five through 21 for CD1 to get them to match. (I.e., where the booklet says tracks 15 and 16 are two versions of Josquin's "El Grillo," your CD player will show them to be tracks 20 and 21.) With luck this will be corrected in later printings.

Also, I would have liked the booklet to include the words, but perhaps that is an inducement to get particular CDs from Naxos.

As for the music itself--breadth of selection, musicianship, sound quality, all are excellent. A great collection!

awesome value -- 5+ stars.......2006-07-15

I'm really enthusiastic about these CDs and booklet. I've had it for a few weeks now, in which I've explored Medieval and Renaissance music much more deeply than this little book and CD set. Yet I'm very glad I started with these.

The selection of composers gives an excellent, broad sweep across several centuries.

But the booklet contains one of the most informative essays I've found about early music, and I've spent a few dozen dollars buying books. If the booklet were separated from the CDs, it alone would be worth more than $10.

In short, if you're interested in exploring early music, this really is one of the best places to start; the best place that I know of. I'm sure, at any rate, that you can't beat the value.

This is the real verison of the songs you should have.......2005-07-03

I had the opportunity to hear Miss Davrath sing a collection of these songs when I was young and that experience has stayed with me for 40 years. The late Miss Davrath pioneered these songs before anyone else discovered these delightful classics. She is the only singer that does them with the correct dialect so they just might sound a little different then the incomplete versions by superstar divas. Get these, you won't be sorry even if you have other versions.

My first Peter White CD! An excellent CD, very impressed with his talent. A great smooth jazz CD to listen to, with Play Your Guitar For Me and Romance Dance my favorites. A very good CD to add to your collection. This ones a toe tapper. I've got the Confidential CD ordered and can't wait to listen to this one.

This might be the finest, softest, and sweetest music and voice I've ever heard. Touching in every way. Moonlight in Montreal and Play Your Guitar For Me are among my favorites.

I've been a smooth jazz fan over 20 years and have to say without hesitation that this album is one of the finest I have in my collection. An avid Peter White fan, I have every CD he has produced to include many artists whom he has appeared as a guest with and the list is long. This CD is certainly a must have.

Peter's fingers moving along the frets and his signature smooth style are grace in motion. A truly gifted musician that performs with passion and heart. My first exposure to Peter White was the year my wife and I got married, Al Stewart came out with "Year Of The Cat" and we've been fans of his since. Two of my all time favorite songs are without a doubt Moonlight Montreal and Romance Dance.

If you enjoy Peter, you'll enjoy Caravan Of Dreams, Promenade, Glow, Perfect Moment and Collection. If you enjoy Peter White you may also enjoy Ken Navarro, Russ Freeman, Chieli Minucci and Jeff Golub (Avenue Blue).

An avid Peter White fan, I have every CD he has produced to include many artists whom he has appeared as a guest with and the list is long. This CD is certainly a must have.

Peter White- Reveillez-vous (1990, CMG).......2002-09-06

Peter White is a soothing jazz musician. This album brings back so many good memories when I first heard this album back in 1998 (which was a bad year for me). This whole entire album is very soothing and is one of the best albums made in the genre of jazz. This lesser-known Peter White album is much more entertaining that his later albums, to me. I really fell in love with this disc and especially songs like "Play Your Guitar For Me", "Reveillez-vous", "Crazy Feeling", "Danny Bianco" & "A Song For Robin". This is one of the 5 best jazz albums ever made.

One of my favorite records.......2005-04-18

I'm buying the CD now to replace my very-scratched LP. I'm no connoisseur of vocal music, but I am a big guitar fan (and player) and a Taoist, so "Big Chariot" speaks most eloquently to me... but the entire "Songs from the Chinese" set from Britten was a trememdous discovery to me the first time I heard the LP many years ago. And, as a bonus, you have those great ribald songs on it, like "To Couple is A Custom". Overall, a fabulous, unique find if your tastes run to voice+guitar+sense of humor.

the britten is okay, but the rest is much better.......2003-06-21

most people will get this cd for britten's songs from the chinese, nocturnal for solo guitar, and the folk song arrangements included here, but these works are not among his best. the nocturnal is a little too verbose, and the arrangements of the folk songs aren't particularly distinctive. the chinese cycle is worthwhile, although certainly not up to the caliber of winter words or the michelangelo sonnets cycle. still, all three have moments worth hearing, particularly among the slower sections. examples include "the autumn wind" in the songs from the chinese and the first movement, "musingly", of the nocturnal.

along with these works by britten, the disc also includes other songs for guitar and voice and these are what make the disc worth getting. bream is ideal and masterful. i believe this is one of pears' later recordings, and he gets a little too carried away at times (for example, at the end of "i gave her cakes"), but he really shines in the pensive, lyrical songs of each cycle presented here, recalling his role as peter grimes. of particular note are his performance in seiber's french folk song arrangements, the first half of the walton cycle, the second lute song from britten's gloriana, and the fricker setting of shakespeare.

the sound has a few spots of static where the vocal was too loud, but they may have been present on the original recording. the liner notes don't include any of the texts, which is a pity, nor is the nocturnal divided into 8 tracks for its 8 movements. still, all in all, worth having if you're a pears or bream fan, and if you're a fan of britten you probably have this disc already.

This is an intriguing collection of mostly folk and folk- influenced material in concert form. The splendid opera singer and recitalist Mentzer and the great guitarist Sharon Isbin have arranged their program for maximum variety, even including several guitar solos as interludes. Although Mentzer says she has long wanted to record the five American folksongs that open the program, she sounds a little uncomfortable in them, too large-scale and operatic in delivery. But the remainder of the disc is excellent, including three wonderful Schubert Lieder and the delightful French folksongs arranged by the almost-forgotten composer Mátyás Seiber. The performers and recording engineers collaborate to ensure that the guitar is always properly audible. And what a great way for fans of each artist to meet the other! --Leslie Gerber

Strangers indeed (3.5 stars).......2007-02-21

Take away the 5 American Songs, I'll give this CD 4.5 stars. It makes me wonder why the artists would choose one of their weakest set to be the title of the CD. I find Ms. Mentzer meandering her way operatically through the 5 songs, ended up totally at lost. But what is amissed here, she made it up in the rest of the CD and I find her most comfortable in the Schubert's songs, she did especially a fine job in the popular Standchen. Aranjuez, Ma Pensee also got a nice premiere here. It is sorrowful and heart-wrenching and well worth the transcription from the Concerto. But the limelight of the performance belongs to Ms. Isbin. She is an excellent accompanist throughout and truely shines in the 3 solo performances. She takes more risks with Capricio Arabe and is well rewarded. The contrasts in color and her rubatos make (the ever-solid) David Russell's interpretation sounds prosaic! In summary, skip past the 5 American songs, the rest of the CD is very enjoyable. I only wish Ms. Mentzer and M. Isbin had choosen a couple more Schubert's songs and a few more guitar solo pieces.

This CD presents two marvelous artists who each perform magnificiently in solo roles. I had sought this CD to hear Sharon Isbin. Susanne Mentzer's voice was unfamiliar. No longer.

The CD consists of many folksongs, American and French plus British works and Lieder. The sound quality is superb. The symetry and synergy produced by Isbin and Mentzer has to be heard to be truly appreciated. Sometimes the voice or instrument is in the background. While writing I am listening to Mentzer and Isbin's guitar mastery provides a beautiful blend. There is one problem that I find. The title is misleading. After listening to this CD, most listeners will feel like neighbors, not strangers. They may be wandering but there is some direction. "Wayfaring" to me implies less direction. The music is spontaneous and moving. It is also free flowing rather than having each performer stick exactly to the scores. Yet they are in tandem. So, as they wander, their steps are in synct.(sp). I bought my copy on an auction. Now, I will look for more Mentzer works while continuing my search for more Isbin. If Erato shows its savvy, there should be an encore CD.

The strength of Mentzer's full mezzo is moving and most enjoyable to the ear and heart. A truthful and beatifully trained artist whose voice allows the listener to do just that "listen". Worthy and rich, full of contrast and life, I find Mentzer's singing very moving. A fine compliment is Isbin's generousity with guitar. Buy this.

Ms. Mentzer is a mezzo with a full rich range, yet very sensitive and moving. Her voice tells us she has love in a complicated life...as all fine artists share. Ms. Isbin is a fine compliment to Mentzer's brilliant and heartfelt singing. A fine addition to any music collection.

Nice idea, problems in execution.......1999-01-27

If you are intrigued by the idea of classical artists performing folk music, this album may prove discouraging. The fault is not with Isbin, who seems comfortable in any musical genre. Mentzer, on the other hand, runs into trouble immediately; her delivery lacks the necessary understatement, and her vibrato goes whanging all over the place. It's pretty painful, though it improves when the performers get to the lieder tracks and Mentzer seems more at ease. Still, getting to the later tracks isn't easy.

Bizarre and intriguing music.......2003-12-10

The works of Clement Janequin are somewhat neglected, despite there being an ensemble dedicated to him (the Janequin Ensemble perform on this album). This is unfortunate, because Janequin was one of the strangest and most interesting composers of pre-Baroque music. Some of his songs--particularly the title track--are full of bizarre vocal effects which add both impressive virtuosity and humor to his compositions. This is a good selection of music performed by a good ensemble, although the whiny, nasal voice of countertenor Dominique Visse is ever-present.
