Editorial Reviews

From Jazziz
During just the past six months, smooth-jazz guitarists Keith Robinson, JK, Gil Parris, and David Frazier have all emerged with solid recordings, each putting a unique twist on wes montgomery's timeless style. Add Nick Colionne to the funky side of that list. Colionne gives props to the legendary guitarist throughout his new CD, The Seduction. Lest we not catch on, he even titled a snappy, swinging quartet tune "Mr. Montgomery." The song is typical of Colionne's approach. He begins by playing a laid-back melody over Matt Rose's gentle piano harmony. Then he bursts into a more aggressive improvisation, bouncing along over a strolling groove generated by Ron Hall's sly bass and drummer Felix Pollard's brushes. Even on pop-funk tunes like "Winelight," Colionne finds a way to put the hook aside and to work out a colorful solo in deference to his muse. Mostly, the album presents small ensembles in a jam setting. But Colionne shows an equally effective romantic side with his sparse arrangement of the standard "You Go to My Head." (Although recording a second version featuring his own vocals was not the best idea.) It's rare to praise a recording for something it's missing, but Colionne's decision to forgo the requisite smooth-jazz saxophone voice helps his guitar playing stand out and allows the listener to take in another fascinating update of the classic Wes sound.

5 out of 5 stars great CD.......2007-03-11

i had been searching for this disc for years when i found it on amazon i new i had to buy it the disc was just as seller discribed perfect condition

4 out of 5 stars Nothing Matters Without Love..........2007-02-15

"Two to make it Right" is my favorite tune on this disc. That fact that's it's under 5 minutes is why I'm taking one star away. The song does this weird "fade-out" and you have a long silence before they move on to the next song. Strange! The rest of the disc is "okay." My overall rating: Four stars!

5 out of 5 stars All Around Excellent Album.......2005-12-28

I love this album!! I can listen to it in it's entirety w/o skipping any tracks!! Every track on this album is off the hook!!! My favorite tracks are "Heartbeat"(extented mix) & "Could This Be Love"!!! I can listen to these two songs over & over again!! I saw them in concert in Anaheim,CA back in '91!!! They are great live!!! I wish they were still around!!! If you like Expose, The Cover Girls, Lisa Lisa, or Sweet Sensation you will definitely enjoy this group!! I highly recommend this album!!!

4 out of 5 stars 80's girl group classic.......2005-11-27

This album is great. Very dated but fun. These girls never really broke out of the underground club scene in the UK but were a big hit in America, much like Expose,The Cover Girls and Sweet Sensation.

Breakdown is hilarious and the spoken section in One Mistake had us in stitches "You're over with - SEE YA!!"

I love this album partly for nostalgic reasons but partly because C&C were amazing producers. Tragically David Cole (one C) is no longer with us. If you love late 80's/early 90's dance music then buy this album. You'll find house, rap,r'n'b,ballads and lots more. Who cares if they didn't sing all the songs?!!! Martha shmartha!!!

5 out of 5 stars A Clivilles and Cole production Seduction!!.......2005-09-06

David Cole and Robert Clivilles started out remixing artists in the mid to late 80's. David Cole was a talented keyboard player, having been the music director for The Weather Girls, this self taught pianist was also a songwriter and together with Robert the two of them not only remixed mainstream acts, they produced and wrote songs for The Covergirls,Stacey Q, TKA and Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam. They also produced they're own home grown artists, Lydia Lee Love ,The Brat Pack and the Studio Group turned into Pop Crossover act Seduction being the most sucessful not counting the "Music Factory" This Cd had to have been Clivilles and Cole at they're best crossover moment. They largely skipped the cliche Feeestyle of the day in an effort to get maximum chartability. The one song produced by an outside producer is the title cut written and produced by Andy (Panda) Tripoli who prodcued The Covergirls.Nothing Matters Without Love is more pop dance than freestyle with Idalis taking the lead, The lead single was Your My One and Only(True Love) sung actually, not by the group but by Martha Wash of the Weather girls singing a very subdued vocal. Seduction was a group before this album with various girls performing the song " Seduction" which was a NYC Club hit for about a year and a half before the full length was released. Two To Make It Right is actually the first single with the girls singing on it and the second video. The "one and only" Video had April Harris lip synching to Martha Wash's voice with an extra rap recorded and only available on the Cassette single and Cd single. Two To Make it right also featured Michelle Visage on co-lead vocals. The remake of Taana Gardners Heartbeat was a good updateand 3rd video, Breakdown was a fun song with Michelle Visage rapping in a non serious way. Unfortunately her incredible ability was under appreciated on this song. She later teamed with TKA for Crash and sang on Lovely Day by Soul System from The Bodyguard soundtrack. Two Ballads on this cd are Could This be Love and Give All My Love To You well done and can fit along with any pop ballad made between 1988-1992 and the 4th video was " Could" . One Mistake was a David Cole construction that any Freestyle Girl Group would have killed to call they're own. I saw this as a b-side on an import but i think the version was instrumental.Closing the Cd is they're first hit with added vocals Seduction, very sensual and a " Quiet Storm Mix" of Could This Be love. This would make a lovely re-issue on CD. Although the album only has 9 songs, the remixes could bring the tracklisting to at least 17 maybe even more, there were house mixes of True Love ( with Martha Wash singing) remixes of Breakdown with an unreleased B-side called Groove Me,hip house remixes of Two to Make it right with Visage rapping and every single had extended versions. After this album C and C created they're own group and took Freedom Williams who wrote all the raps for Seduction and pretty much had hits as Seduction waited. Michelle Visage ended up in Soul System and due to the fact that Seduction was a C and C creation, after they're incredible debut and follow up David Cole passed away and there never was a Seduction follow up Cd. This album is a record in time and could use a remastered re-issue . The group has been doing dance clubs with April Harris fronting the group. Idalis Leon has been acting ,was an MTV VJ for a minute and last seen on season 4 of 6 Feet Under. Michelle Visage is now a radio DJ

5 out of 5 stars Boney's Best.......2007-07-07

This is the quintessential Boney James CD. His version of Ain't No Sunshine is a classic that fans salivate for at his concerts(I being one of them)! Sara Smile is also a masterpiece. If you love Boney, this is a must have!

5 out of 5 stars Success!!.......2007-06-07

This is definetely his best CD including the latest "Shine". If you're a true fan, you must get this one. When I got it, I too couldn't stop listening to it! Great Job Boney!!

4 out of 5 stars good old boney.......2007-05-20

Better tahn his latest issue.True boney fans will already have this in there box but for those just discovering 'seek out'.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth As Silk.......2004-11-03

Boney is extremely smooth and talented. From the named title "Seduction" to "Ain't No Sunshine" the man grooves. Easy on the heart as well as the soul. Boney took a number of old ballads and does wonderful things with them, for example I can listen to "Ain't No Sunshine" over and over again. He makes magic with "Sara Smile". His style of horn is a very unobtrusive and as I said before, smooth as silk. You do not have to be in the "right" mood to enjoy this classic, just put it on and it fits like an expensive well maintained luxury sedan. Give it a test drive and you will like it. Your collection will not be complete without this one, you will not be dissappointed! If love the stylings of the late great Grover Washington Jr and the ever present David Sanborn, you will love this one and many of his others.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Wanda.......2003-03-21

I like this cd because it's everything that I am. Sexy, Sensual, romantic and always in the mood. I enjoy Boney James music anyway, because he knows what to play to put you in mood and keep you that way. Makes the ladies as well as the men keep coming back for more. He's the Luther Vandross in jazz. Keep it coming Boney.

5 out of 5 stars So excited .......2007-07-08

I am so excited to have finally found this after 20 plus years of searching. This is the ultimate mood music!!! It is like Christmas in July!! I haven't been this excited since receiving Carol King Tapestry in 1972(or 1973) for Christmas!! I could just pee my pants!!!! I have to give credit to my adoring husband who found this for me and never even heard of James Last Band until I turned him on to it!! Thanks, honey....love you to bits!!

3 out of 5 stars It's NOT David Sanborn!.......2007-01-28

It's actually Ernie Watts playing the alto sax solo on this version of "The Seduction." David Sanborn recorded this tune on his "Hideaway" album after the James Last Band version hit the charts. In fact, on earlier pressings of the "Hideaway" LP, "The Seduction" is not on it. It was added to a later pressing of the album as an afterthought, I suppose...

1 out of 5 stars Seduction.......2007-01-04

My Mom wanted a particular song on this CD - I did not know when I ordered it that it would contain profanity and not the version that she heard on the radio. Would not recommend, there is no reason for profanity in a love song.

5 out of 5 stars In The "Seduction Zone".......2006-11-21

Nowadays, in part due to the noodlings of Kenny G., it is common to dismiss instrumental pop and rock music as nothing more than glorified Muzak, even though quite a few of those instrumental records have endured over time. Such is the case with this album from German-born band leader and arranger James Last which was originally released in 1980.

Straddling the worlds of disco, synth-pop, new wave, and smooth jazz, this is a thoroughly underappreciated ten-track collection of instrumental pop. All but two of the tracks were composed either by Last himself or by his son Ronald Last, and are extremely inventive combinations of jazz-rock fusion influences and synthesizers. The two non-original ones both have their origins in Giorgio Moroder's score for the Paul Schrader-directed 1980 film AMERICAN GIGOLO. One of them is "Night Drive", whose main melody is derived from the Blondie song "Call Me" that is on the AMERICAN GIGOLO soundtrack. The other one, of course, is "The Seduction", this album's title track and that movie's haunting love theme, with an uncredited alto sax solo by David Sanborn. That track was widely played on the radio and actually peaked at #28 on the Billboard Hot 100 in May 1980.

Last's "band", so to speak, consists of a lot of great musicians, including string arranger Sid Sharp; drummer Rick Marotta; guitarists Robert "Waddy" Wachtel and Lee Ritenour; keyboardists Don Grolnick and Michael Boddicker; bassist Abe Laboriel; and sax maestro Ernie Watts. All combine on this album for a lush but not syrupy experience from a time when production gimmickry had yet to swamp the recording process. A hugely worthwhile album for anyone with a taste for instrumental pop and rock of a compelling kind.

5 out of 5 stars New Path.......2007-04-10

Incendio is known for pushing the musical envelope of flamenco infused music. On this new release they add some smooth jazz that further enhances the music and gives the listener a nice treat.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Guitar by "INCENDIO".......2007-03-28

All the songs are great! Ledges Road and Baile Solitario are my favorite on this CD. I can listen to their guitar playing all day. I have seen them perform live twice and they just amaze me, they are so talented. I have 5 of their cds and I listen to them everyday. I took my son to see them and they encouraged him to play his guitar and learn more about music. Thank You!!! Incendio for the Your Wonderful GUITARS. Lisa Carbe Rocks!!! base player.

5 out of 5 stars Incendio re-invents itself again........2006-10-30

I bought their first CD "Misterioso" back in 2000 and I thought they were a "nuevo flamenco" type group like Novamenco or Armik, but I was wrong. These guys are always pushing the envelope. From guitar trio, to electronica/trance (on the "Illumination" CD)to in-your-face guitar solo trading to romantic ballads these guys are just great songwriters.
This CD is a little more "contemporary jazz", but there is still alot of fiery playing and interesting arrangents. Worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Also Dia Y Noche.......2006-10-28

Incendio is an incredibly solid band. You can have them play all day - all weekend - and all year and never tire of them. They are AMAZING live and their music is unbelievably danceable - and I don't even claim to have ever danced anywhere else before.

Pick it up and buy it - they are so passionate and incredible guitar players, bass players, and drummers!

5 out of 5 stars Smoothjazz.com Review.......2006-10-03

If you're looking for a cookie-cutter, formulaic Smooth Jazz recording, start looking elsewhere. That being said, I view the fact that Incendio doesn't fit into any mold as a positive thing. Fresh and vibrant, SEDUCTION, their 5th release, is akin to sitting in a smoky bar and then stepping out into pure mountain air... just breathe it all in and relish the liberation. Based in Los Angeles, the trio (Jean-Pierre Durand on guitar and keyboards; Jim Stubblefield on guitar; and Liza Carbe on bass and guitar) perform extensively throughout the country with the Catalina Jazz Festival, the Strawberry Folk Music Festival in Yosemite, the Verizon Music Festival in L.A., the Sundance Film Festival and the NAB and NATPE Conventions in Las Vegas being just some of the highlights. Their music has been heard on television shows (i.e.: HBO's "Resurrection Boulevard") and radio stations throughout the world. Scorching and resplendent with vitality from the very start, "Isla Verde" exudes passion and tangible electricity. Equally delicate and turbulent, "Secret Traveler" is another standout track. Many layers of exquisite showmanship had me hitting the repeat button several times. Steeped in romance, both "Malaga Sunset" and "Ledges Road" are beguiling and hypnotic and not to be missed. Incendio couldn't have chosen a more apt title for this release, as SEDUCTION is truly just that... a seduction of both the ears and heart. ~ BETH LEWIS

5 out of 5 stars Traditional Enigma sound re-visited.......2006-11-02

Opening My Eyes...

Fading in to the excitement of the forthcoming session by Jens Gad....Violin-like intro with deep layers, radio talks are welcoming us again...Luisa Fernandez is opening the album with Spanish whispers, just like a typical Enigma album intro...Mysterious, swirling, seducing....Words into....

In The Recent Past

...the amazing sound effects travelling from left to right channels in my speakers...Setting a stunning athmosphere for the killer track of the album...Here we go deep into the sound of Jens once again....This is officially my Sadeness part 2. Gregorian chants, incredibly well produced beats with organ sound of Sadeness mixes...Low key shakukachi flutes blending with Sadeness Reprise-like piano solo...All combined with magic...Luisa Fernandez continues whisperings throughout the song...You really need to listen to this track as loud as you listen to Sadeness! While gently fading out we are introduced...

The Delta of The Red River

..with yet another bells from E1 era..Flutes, breathing voices, a deep bass line...And SANDRA! Yes, you hear a short breath sample and the main beat kicks in...Totally mind blowing, totally in harmony with Er-Hu violins..Male talks in the background.Invention of this beat is well worth to credit in the music scene..This is something really new, not a repeat from the past actually..Bass line requires real good speakers to enjoy the wave in your interior organs...Flutes are blending into the...

Nothern Horizon

...hypnotizing washing-machine-like effect...Yes, there's no better way to describe the sound effect..Then the Exactly the same hi-hats from Sadeness fades in -slowly-, the beat is more like Mea culpa...This is a very catchy song for all E1 Fans....Then we hear a voice, it is not a Er-Hu violin but a voice, this is Helene (from Achillea) Suddenly I get the same feeling all over again - remember the substitution of flutes and the vocoder voice on Push The Limits, this is not the same but, Jen's plan fits well to this- you are confused with the similarity of Helene's voice with the violin...Do human voice resemble the nature or the instruments are actually us?? Xylophones are blended with a true jazzy base...Perfect fit for elite clubs/bars playing lounge music.A proof of amazing production...

The 5th Column

...An experimental track, supposedly produced for Enigma - Voyageur..Piano with electronic transitions...E1 materials can be heard again...You are into this feeling ''Hey, this is so familiar, but from where?'' This is the professional touches of Jens...He uses some old elements in a total new way...Very Successful..Bass Layers into...

Silent Heroes

...Choirs and Smell of Desire Part 2 begins...This time blending some elements from ''The Roundabout'' too.. And finally we hear
the typical Jens guitar solo....Another favourite track from the album..Relaxing yet powerful, familiar yet new...
It is clear that, this is an unreleased Enigma track from The Screen Behind The Mirror album...

Reachers of Civilization

...Classic violins...Yes this is what he really wanted to bring into the Enigma project...This track was added later to the context of the album..A Collaboration with the German producer Torsten Stenzel. This is not into the Enigma sound but interestingly very close to chill out tunes of ATB. Quite Electronic, still very calming....

Punta Del Este

...This is translated as ''End of The East'' supposedly produced for the album Voyageur...A more powerful version of ''The Piano'' This could easily be released as a future Enigma track....Electronic Piano notes are vividly lifting the song up..Not forgetting the trademark of Jens' guitars..

Farewell to the Moon

...Another Torsten Stenzel collaboration...This track is actually better than the other..Again reminiscent of ATB sound.Female vocal samples are looping from beginning to end...Also giving hints to my favorite forthcoming track on the album..I noticed these while writing this review. In the end, this is an average mid-track as the other...

Slowly Walking In

Okay Enigmatics...This is the track of the album...Massive beats blended with guitar solo..Oriental drums looping and distorted
human sounds....Breathing voices from left to right, right to left...Luisa whisperings and the slowed down Sadeness hi-hats, better than most Enigma songs...Better than anything on Enigma Voyageur...When I had the opportunity to listen to the complete album, that was the track I got obsessed to...This is truly an addiction to the wonderful music of Jens Gad.(I hope Cretu doesn't regret including this song on Enigma albums, because I really do feel that for him)...

Polar Lights

...Have you ever wondered what happened to our submarine on the album The Screen Behind The Mirror? This track is your answer.
Water droplets on L/R channels...Ticking clock and the underwater feel...This is Traces Part2. Our submarine goes deeper and deeper and meets dolphins underwater...And besides there's a hidden treasure near the ancient wreck...Pressure is increasing and can be felt with every sense...Dolhpins keep talking to us, probably leading us to the treasure?...

...Closing My Eyes

...and we are back to the beginning or is this just the end? Spanish intro is repeated again with a vanishing pattern,We are disappering here...

Extra Track listed as ''Life Sign'' :

It is obviously the same track as ''The Delta of The Red River'' with English vocals...This is probably the single version of the original track, appealing to the charts system or say
commercial music society..

Conclusion : This album is way better than Enigma Voyageur, even better than Le Roi Est Mort Vive Le Roi, in some aspects...Very close to the pure sound of Enigma Mcmxc a.D and The Cross of Changes...If you are still looking for a part 2 for Mcmxc a.D or The Cross... Go buy your copy now. You will not regret...

4 out of 5 stars Excellent CD with an "Enigma" feel.......2006-04-12

Enigmatic Obsession aka Jens Gad has created this new and very beautiful album. Borrowing heavily from the same types of sounds and melodies that made Enigma a genre all its own Gad has created what probably could have been the latest edition to Enigma. Perfect for lounge settings, relaxing at home or even for a romantic evening Secrets of Seduction will please those looking for something similar to Enigma but with a twist. I gave it 4 stars because though its a remarkable album it does have a few tracks that aren't on the same level of quality as the rest of the album. I still say that Michael Cretu (creator of Enigma) and Jens Gad (co producer of Enigma and aka Achillea and Enigmatic Obsession) should produce the music for a Cirque Du Soleil show.

None of these tracks have appeared on CD before including their highly collectable self released 1982 debut album 'Seduction'. Additional tracks were drawn from their critically acclaimed 12 inch singles, 'Somewhere/Hide' & 'Woman's Own', their first single 'Clock' & the classics 'These Frayed Eyes' & 'The Seduction'. The CD features the original 'Seduction' LP cover art along with other sleeves from their early period with notes by keyboardist, Lyndon Scarfe & a complete discography. 2001 release.

3 out of 5 stars The '80s are revisited.......2001-07-28

Looking a band that rode the new wave of the 80s? This is a compilation of additional singles by Danse Society albeit the band's earlier years. Mainstream new wave fans may be chilled by the haunting melodies. Yet, the whirl of the guitar is akin to Edge's shrieks (U2), the keyboards add a dimensional sound akin to Joy Division/New Order; early Simple Minds before "New Gold Dream 81-82-83-84"; early OMD before "Junk Culture". Its not that the band sought a relationalship tag that links them to a genre or sub-genre. For six years, actually less, they sought to do their own thing. It is unfair, to make any musical correlations, because the band did bring a fresh approach to the music of the 80's. Although the time the band made records was short ;they had crafted some good tunes. On this cd, you'll find a punk flavored "Clock", a moderate tempo song of the agonies of a love life "My Heart" and the driving toe tapping ditty "Somewhere" which originally a single that ended up on the bands USA Arista vinyl LP "Heaven Is Waiting". Your mediocre scribe wishes that "Say It Again" all versions would be re-issued available for purchase on compact disc. It this song that was their musical zenith. The club version and extended versions are a powerhouse dance song. The 80's are revisited with this re-issue. Will there be more to follow?

5 out of 5 stars Heaven Has Arrived.......2001-06-27

This is excellent dark synthesizer "goth", with a post-punk flavor. If you like Clan of Xymox, Xmal Deutschland, or early Cure, you will more than likely like this. Prior to the release of this CD, all Danse Society releases were deleted on all formats; and globally unavailable for many years. The only Danse Society tracks which were commercially available were the classic "We're So Happy", on the Gothic Rock compiltaion, and the glorious "Somewhere", which was also released on a subsequent edition of Gothic Rock. I am forever indebted to Cherry Red records for releasing this CD. For the first time, you can hear tracks like Danse/Move, Belief, Clock, Godsend, and Falling Apart, minus the clicks and pops found on the old vinyl records. The musicianship on these songs is excellent; the keyboards go hand in hand with the guitar melodies, and Steve Rawling's vocals are simply superb. The only drawback to this CD is that it is missing the song "There is No Shame in Death". Other than that, you've got all of the songs on The Danse Society's early singles, as well as those on the Seduction EP. The CD package features artwork from the Seduction EP, a discography w/cover artwork for all their early singles, plus keyboardist Lyndon Scarfe's commentary on their early days. Now if only Cherry Red records would only re-release the Danse Society's "Heaven is Waiting" CD......

Guitarist Oscar Lopez's second album is a delight, rife with energetic music that alternates between laid-back and frenetic. The more up-tempo material is eminently danceable; one could tango to "Rosa Rose." Strong percussion backs up Lopez's guitar on "Baila, Baila," "Cerca de Ti," "Mulata," and "Loco por Ti," which also features a piano part that handily explains why the piano is technically a percussion instrument. (As an added bonus, there's a second version of "Loco por Ti" with vocals.) This kind of music is hardly subtle, but Lopez is capable of that as well, as he shows with "Corrientes" and "Loving You," both of which exemplify the expressive power of the acoustic guitar. And then there's "Aires de Otros Mundos," which wouldn't sound out of place in a road movie that featured lonely mountains and arroyos as part of the landscape. --Genevieve Williams

4 out of 5 stars Senor Lopez' best album; give him a "B".......2007-07-17

Whenever I feel my emotional prowess waning, "The Flavor" brings me charging back. It's viagra for the soul. The CD reminds us what real manly and womanly romance and passion are about. Oscar's singing? Well, Oscar, don't quit your day job as a guitarist.
I've spent money on this stuff and here is want I have learned. The heirarchy of this genre': (1) Jesse Cook, good variety, particularly his double album, (2) Lopez "Seduction", (3) Ottmar Liebert fun, but after a while it all sounds alike, (4) Armik, much flashy technique, but little soul or depth. Stick with the top two guys and you'll be OK. Keep searching.

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Chill Out .......2006-03-14

Lopez knows how to play and he does it well here. I've enjoyed this for a couple of years. I ordered it after listening to Heat. Heat amazed me for the technical playing. Seduction is more of a heartfelt cd, with a ton of emotion coming through on every song. If you're not relaxed after the first few songs then you have too much stress in your life.

5 out of 5 stars Increible!.......2003-08-24

I have been a big fan of guitar music for the last 30 years. There have only been a handful of musicians that have impressed me. Oscar Lopez is one of them. I bought this album a couple of years ago...along with others like Jesse Cook and Ottmar. This album is an incredible piece of work. I play this album over and over and find new riffs that I discover. The music penetrates your soul and is addicting. All of the songs are excellent. My favorites are; Baila, Baila, Cerca de Ti, Corrientes, Gentle Seduction, and Mulata. I highly recommend this album...it is well worth a listen but once you hear it, you'll get hooked, Oscar is so passionate in his playing, you can almost see him play the guitar.

5 out of 5 stars Music so beautiful it makes your soul weep!.......2002-12-10

This CD will sweep the listener to a musiclandscape of lush color and passions. Evoking emotions of yearning, desire and all the subtle nuances of love. My favorite is definately the melodic and hypnotizing track "Loving You" which flows with seducive musical magnetism. Listen once and you will want to listen a thousand times more. Try it.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2002-11-27

I purchased this because I have several CDs by Jesse Cook and Ottmar Liebert, and wanted something new to try. I bought this based on Amazon recommendations (and after listening to the sample clips.) I have to say, I'm thrilled with this purchase! The music ranges from quiet and mesmerizing to flirty and passionate. I frequently play it as background music while working, since it's not distracting, and have found it works wonderfully for yoga practice as well. I've already bought a second copy to pass along to a friend as a Christmas gift.

Highly recommended!

Seminal mid-'80s electro-pop players (their hit "Close to the Edit" recently provided sample fodder for Prodigy's "Firestarter"), Trevor Horn, Paul Morley, Anne Dudley, and new addition Lol Creme (of 10cc), have regrouped as Art of Noise just in time to introduce classical-jungle fusion to the world. Using revered composer Debussy's melodic blueprint to build its elaborate, velvety drum & bass compositions, the group manages to make what initially seems like a dodgy idea sound somewhat viable, particularly on dreamy, atmospheric tracks like "Out of This World." Vocal contributions come from Sally Bradshaw, Donna Lewis, Rakim, and even actor John Hurt. --Aidin Vaziri

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Intellectually and sonically excellent.......2006-09-29

I am an old school Noise fan, have been since their first video on Mtv in the early 80's. My fave to date was the Max Headroom era Noise with the Paranoimia vid, and the great tunes on the album. YES album, as in vinyl.

DO NOT MISS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS WORK. IT IS UNEQUALLED. Give this work some room to breath! Listen with a quality system.

To all you 'fans' of AoN that have panned this disc, you need to give this some more time in your list, straight thru, without ceasing nor shuffling. Close your eyes, and let the magic take you...and get a better sound system, from some of your comments I wonder if you are listening thru some cheapo mp3 player with cheaper earbuds! I have audiophile quality earbuds with dual drivers, cost me close to $1000, AND a Diamond Audio Hex system in my car. This work deserves a quality system, and I wish I could afford better to really hear this piece.

To anyone else that likes classical music a little, and techno music a little, this will open your mind to new possibilities of music recombining you never thought possible. Who would have thought one could combine rap and opera on the same disc? AND IT WORKS!

Some have pointed to an artist by the name of Malcolm McLaren, and claiming (shallowly in this writer's humble opinion) that AoN have ripped him off from an earlier effort. I do not know this artist nor do I own any of his music, but to compare this disc to what samples I have listened to on Amazon, I have this to say; Are you kidding me?!? You are comparing that pop tripe to this intellectual masterpiece by AoN? If you only listen to the surface of the music you buy, then I pity you, for you are missing the point, and it isn't a small one, either.

I am a drummer by long experience, and my rhythmic awareness is at the highest level, and the programming on this piece is unbeleivable! It strains my abilities to keep up so I can imagine some with less rhythmic awareness can find some of the drum and bass sections a bit fast and overwhelming. Give it time. You will hear, with some training and time, what gems this masterpiece has to offer you.

5 out of 5 stars sound and perfume swirl in the evening air.......2006-05-16

"The Seduction of Claude Debussy" is not just a remarkable musical triumph, it is doubly so given how easily the whole thing could have collapsed under the weight of its considerable hubris. The Art of Noise are not exactly bashful, and here they are even less so than usual as they attempt what amounts to an electronica Debussy cover album. On top of it all, John Hurt provides highly stylized narration interspersed in the lulls and even sometimes during the most heightened drama of the album, describing Debussy's life and artistic brilliance, referencing half-known poets and the like. This project could have been totally dire in less capable hands, but fortunately AON knows what they're doing.

The source of strength of this release is that it is an album, not a collection of weak Debussy remixes. No techno-ridden piano-and-string loops here. Instead we have luscious piano cascades and classical guitar and mighty string crescendos flowing beautifully over ambience, dub beats and jackhammer drillnbass alike. After all, it wouldn't be enough for Art of Noise to put new beats to old music. After declaring at the end of "Il Pleure" that Debussy "was the revolutionary that set 20th century music on its way," they could do nothing less than give us a full and rich sampling of the entire palette of 20th century music, from jazz to bubblegum pop to dub and drum and bass to hip hop. Anything less would be an insult their chosen subject and hero. For the most part, they succeed, although I personally found the rapper Rakim's surprising arrival in the middle of Track 6 to be a little jarring.

Most importantly, though, is that "Seduction" doesn't just work as an artistic concept, it works as music. It is a beautiful composition, with rich arrangements and terrific mixing, and covering an impressive degree of ground, never growing repetitive, always original and filled with aggressive experimentation and originality. I can't imagine whether Debussy himself would have liked or hated it, but what is probably certain is that he would not have been bored by it.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing short of a fantastic album........2006-04-06

This album can only be described with one, simple word: beautiful. The integration of Debussy's work with the Art of Noise's musical prowess is nothing short of genius in and of itself. The Seduction, in every sense of the word, illustrates a colorful, brilliant picture of various moments in Debussy's life, accentuated with almost every imaginable classical instrument The Art can muster.

With John Hurt's warm narraration dotting various points of the music, the listener is eased through clouds of lush composition and back into reality through the beautiful, rainy painting of Il Pleure, escorted through wave after wave of operatic bliss, backgrounded with acid-orchestral beats in Dreaming in Color, and guided through the gardens of blossoming rhymes in the enchanting Evening Air. The the song that stands out the most, if a listener does not mind the interceding narraration, is The Holy Egoism of Genius. One is confronted with the various aspects of the artist's mind, and possibly given insight into the head of Debussy. The Holy Egoism of Genius, as with the rest of the album, is not an album that is to be listened to lightly or casually, despite the levity of the music itself.

In order to truly experience The Seduction of Claude Debussy, one must be isolated, so that every second of wonderful, orchestrated, and frequently blissful song can send chill after chill through one's spine. I have yet to find an album that is this consistent, beautiful, and to put it as simply as possible, great.

5 out of 5 stars A Seminal Work of Musical Art and Culture for All Time.......2005-08-17

I wrote a review for this album back in 1999 for Amazon, but for whatever reason, when they revamped their site, it was lost. I can't remember everything that I wrote, but I can remember how I feel everytime that I hear this album...uplifted.

On another note, I do a lot of audio-visual work at different venues and I DJ and do some concert work as well. Whenever I set up my systems for a sound check, I put on "Il Pleure: At the Turn of the Century" and turn the system up...way up.

Whenever people who happen to be in the room or hall hear this, I get droves of people asking me the name of the song and who made it. And most of them, if they know me personally, will go and get the album and then contact me and thank me for pulling their coat about it.

There is one thing that I remember that I wrote in that review:
"While this album may not have been the best album of 1999, it is among the best of the 20th century and it is a fitting work to end the 20th century with, considering that its subject matter is based at it's beginning. All things move in cycles...."

2 out of 5 stars High Hopes............2005-06-27

Huge fan of the Art of Noise first album "Who's Afraid...?", the "original" lineup and all that. Not at all happy with what came next( the novelty covers and duets with Maxx Headroom, Tom Jones, Duane Eddy, et al) after Morley and Horn left. I had very high hopes for this highly hyped "reunion" cd, but I'm just not feeling it. The idea is very lazy creatively , rather Malcolm McLaren-ish ( it reminds me of his "Fans" album from the mid-eighties )and the execution is not up to par with their work together on "Who's Afraid...?" Had this album been approached in a more staightforward way, like the William Orbit collection Pieces in a Modern Style, or even like some of Wendy Carlos' work as an interpreter of classical music using synthetic devices, it might be more inspiring or engaging. But as it is, this is for me a big letdown.

I bought this album at a Destroyer show and I didn't know what to expect when I got it, I had only heard 3 songs by Bejar, "Jackie", "Breakin' the Law", the best 2 songs on The New Pornographers Mass Romantic Album, and "The Sublimation Hour" which I had downloaded from the Misra Records website. While the show suffered from poor sound (Message to Dan "Oh please have Destroyer open for the New Pornographers for the spring/summer 2003 tour") the songs were amazing, especially the first song "Strike" with the band coming into a frenzy that I was simply not prepared for, and the encore of "The Bad Arts", the best song I have seen live since being introduced to "Deeper into Movies" at The Fillmore in 1997. Since the purchase of this album I have become Destroyer's #1 Super Fan in San Francisco, almost everyone I have played this album for either buys it or begs for a copy, after which it does not leave their CD player, it really is that good. There is not a weak song on this album, there are classic lines, classic hooks, explosions, its all there. Play it loud, play it soft, just play it, best album in a decade.
