Born in Chicago in 1913, Al Gallodoro began playing the clarinet at age 7 and picked up the saxophone soon thereafter. He began his musical career at age 12 in a dance band called "Romeo and His Juliets". This led to touring (at age 13) with the George Evans Band.
In 1927, Al moved to New Orleans, where he worked as First AltoSax/Clarinet in the Orpheum Theater house orchestra, where he performed with the likes of Bob Hope, Milton Berle, Edgar Bergen and the Ritz Brothers.
1933 brought him to New York where he worked with Isham Jones, Rudy Vallee and ultimatley Paul Whiteman. He performed in several films with Whiteman's group. While in New York, he also performed in the NBC Symphnoy Orchestra under Arturo Toscanini, Leopold Stokowski and Dr. Frank Black. He was also one of New York's leading freelance players.
In 1947, he resumed his working relationship with Paul Whiteman at WJZ (later WABC) Radio, a tenure that lasted until 1967, when the ABC Radio Orchestra disbanded. During these years, more than 20 arrangements were written for him by such composers as Ralph Herman, Ferde Grofe and Carmen Coppola. As always, Al was in constant demand as a top-flight freelancer on recordings, commercials and casuals.
Al has served on the music faculties of several colleges and has made many appearances at the New Orleans Jazz Festival, the Holland Breda Jazz Festival and on tour in Europe and the U.S.
At age 85, he remains an active and vital player.
