Customer Reviews:
A worthy addition to JSP's first two Django box sets.......2006-02-08
I first hesitated to get this third set (Django in Rome 1949-1950) because many of the songs were included in "The Indispensable Django Reinhardt" which I already owned. Having listened to it now, though, I have no regrets about the purchase. Not only is the sound quality much better than "The Indispensible Django Reinhardt," but the additional songs included turn out to be many of Django's best recordings.
Of the four disks, the first three consist mainly of Django playing in 1949 in Rome with his old partner on violin, Stephane Grappelli, and the last disk contains recordings in 1950 with another old friend, Andre Ekyan, on alto sax and clarinet. In both cases the soloists are backed by competent Italian backup bands consisting of piano, bass and drums. Many of the recordings with Grappelli, in particular, rank with the very best of the original Quintet of the Hot Club of France, and it's quite interesting to see how they rework some of the same songs that they'd first recorded together a decade earlier.
One thing that should be mentioned is that, contrary to the title shown on the Amazon page, these are not live recordings and the name on the box set itself doesn't say "live." It would be great to have a box set like this of live recordings of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, but as far as I know nothing like that exists. In any case, it's at least fortunate that so many remarkable studio recordings have been preserved and now remastered.
Vive le Django, Vive le JSP.......2005-01-02
* 90 sides for less than $30
* Beautiful remastering by Ted Kendall with minimal noise make these old recordings sound modern
* Django playing brilliantly as always on the electric and acoustic guitar in a variety of settings including solo, reunions with Stephane Grappelli, and a reconfigured Quintette du Hot Club du France featuring clarinet, sax, piano, and drums
* As opposed to the second JSP box where Django plays with huge ensembles and is featured less prominently, this box has Django performing with 4 musicians or less
* Mr. Kendall includes a slow and sublime version of Nuages with an electric guitar solo by Django including one of the more ridiculous runs up the fretboard ever recorded
Cons:
* A question of taste: Swing enthusiasts infatuated with the 3 guitar, bass, and violin sound of the early QHCF may prefer the first JSP box, but any fan of Le Django will be quite satisfied with these exquisite late masters
* Minimal packing and notes
Bottom line: Staggering value

Two Great Sax Masters in their Prime.......2006-09-26
The big issue here (hear) is the 24 bit remastering job. It is simply stunning. I have a LOT of CD's by both these incomperable artists, but this has quickly become a favorite. Each of these greatest saxophone players is known for a highly distinctive tone which is rendered truer here than any other CD's I've heard by either artist. Rather than process the bejeesis out of the masters to produce an overall pleasing sound, this is of the mess with it as little as possible while getting most of the noise out school.
While each of these players is well known for playing pretty, these tracks find both in an adventuresome frame of mind. While leaning heavily on standards, these trax COOK!
I'm not going to take the time to wax rhapsodic about Jeep and Hawk. If you like jazz and you're not already familiar with their work, then shame on you.

Lanza's versatility to the fore.......2001-09-15
Recorded at Lanza's very first commercial session on May 5, 1949, Che Gelida Manina from La Boheme and the Neapolitan song Mamma Mia, Che Vo' Sape? are true classics. Upon hearing the Boheme recording, the great Toscanini is said to have remarked that "Mario Lanza possesses the greatest natural tenor voice of the 20th century." Whether he actually said this or not, the pronouncement was an accurate one! Just listen to this rendition and you'll understand why Lanza's performance won the 1949 Operatic Recording of the Year Award in the United States. His line, his every note (and what a High C!) are truly unforgettable.
Mamma Mia Che Vo Sape is in the same class, with Lanza's meltingly beautiful mezza voce in evidence coupled with great reserves of power. A Lanza classic. Core N'Grato is a real sizzler - not quite in the same class as its companion pieces from the tenor's May 1949 session, but a great sign of things to come. Ditto the Celeste Aida, which Lanza was soon to better on his 1950 recording (see the MGM CD).
The material from Toast of New Orleans alternates between operatic arias and duets, and love songs. Trite though the love songs mostly are, they're great fun, and you'll never hear a more perfect High C than the one Lanza produces at the end of Tina-Lina. The arias are a mixed bag, with a rough Butterfly Love Duet and an equally unpolished Libiamo from La Traviata. The Flower Song is wild and unrestrained - but convincing! (Carmen would never have abandoned THIS Don Jose.) The real standout, though, is a perfectly sung M'appari, Tutt'amor from the opera Martha. This is the ideal recording to play to all those Lanza doubters out there - but make sure you don't tell them who it is first!
All in all, a very good release and one of the few CDs available with a half-way decent reproduction of Che Gelida Manina. Buy it for this classic alone and you'll not be disappointed.
