Album Description

Joyce's stunning new album 'Rio Bahia' - her 25th! - sees her joined by legendary arranger, guitarist and composer, Dori Caymmi, who having added string arrangements and sung on most tracks, has given the album a sweeping, majestic feel that will appeal not only to fans of Joyce and classic Brazilian music but also those into classic vocal Jazz.

Rio Bahia features new material from Dori and Joyce, new songwriting partnerships such as Dori with Chico Buarque and Joyce with Carlos Lyra and standards from Baden Powell, Vinicius de Moraes & Dorival Caymmi. The Rio Bahia jazz mood has in essence been created by Joyce's now long serving rhythm section of her husband, Tutty Moreno on drums and Rodolfo Stroeter on bass. Also guesting on the album is the great American jazz pianist Kenny Werner, and percussionist Ronaldo Silva, a samba specialist. A choir of friends from Sao Paulo also join them on many of the tracks.

Described by Antonio Carlos Jobim as "one of the greatest singers of all time", singer, composer, guitarist Joyce is one of the most revered of Brazilian singers, not only in her own country, but on the international stage. Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1948, Joyce is a sophisticated urbanite, whose personal musical style was nurtured in Rio's fertile jazz/samba scene. Her sound mellifluously combines Brazilian rhythms, jazz harmonies and intelligent lyrics through a beautiful expressive voice.

Joyce was Described by the Late Antonio Carlos Jobim as "One of the Greatest Singers of all Time".

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Laid back and right.......2007-04-27

Joyce is an important and widely recognized artist. Here with Dori who reigns from a Brazilian musical family dynasty.
Now Joyce's voice and guitar are instantly lovable. But on the first few listenings I thought Dori's presence was out of respect. Well that all changed. One of those HAH! moments when I realized Dori doesn't push because he doesn't have to. Just laid back and in his own style. Together they are great and sure to raise a smile.

Also had the rare pleasure of seeing pretty much this band here in NY last weekend in a small club. A treat that brought tears to my eyes.

4 out of 5 stars Delicate........2006-11-14

Joyce may be one of Brazil's finest singers and songwriters, but she still has a remarkably low profile around US and Europe.
On the eve of another world tour where she'll be playing clubs and small halls comes a reminder of what makes her special.
She can tackle anything from delicate ballads and jazz-tinged bossa nova to more up-beat samba, and there's a delicacy, immediacy and energy to her work that sets her apart.
This set is a tribute to the two music centres of Rio and Bahia.
She's joined by guitarist and singer Dori Caymmi, who wrote many of the songs, including his exquisite collaboration with Chico Buarque, "Fora de Hora".
There's not quite the intensity or range of one of Joyce's live performances, and Caymmi's vocals are not up to his guitar work, but there are some fine moments, from the sophisticated scat of "Joaozinho Boa Pinta" to the gentle treatment of "Saudade da Bahia".
She likes to include the unexpected and "The Colours of Joy" is a tribute to Archbishop Desmond Tutu, sung in English and with appropriate African influences.
Check it out, then see her live.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious Bossa Nova, an intelligent and swinging toast to Rio de Janeiro and Bahia.......2006-05-17

Joyce is the great composer who comes the 60s music scene in Brazil with a bright and tasty string of releases all well sung, all well arranged, all with great repertoire, nearly all by her own pen.

Dori Caymmi is the great composer who comes the 60s music scene in Brazil with a bright and tasty string of releases all well sung, all well arranged, all with great repertoire, nearly all by his own pen.

Oops! Do you think I made a mistake by repeating the same descriptive paragraph for both artists? I tell you that certainly not!

Obviously, there is some difference between them. Joyce is a gentle woman from Rio. Dori is a gentleman from the Bahia breed, from the illuminated music family of his father Dorival Caymmi.

Both Joyce and Dori have decided to meet in their first album collaboration in a toast to Rio de Janeiro and Bahia. This is the origin of the album title 'Rio-Bahia'.

What a swinging toast! What sensitive taste! What great performances in this album which was produced exclusively for Japanese market and then it is here @Amazon after being also issued in Brazil and in the UK.

Nearly all the arrangements are by Dori Caymmi, a master in swinging samba and also in romantic string sets.

Delicious voices by Joyce and hot grave tones by Dori: the voices matched beautifully.

Many new songs by Joyce and Dori except for 3 tracks, all sung in Portuguese.

Rhythm section includes Kenny Werner at the piano, Tutty Moreno on bass. A string section illuminates some tracks.

4 out of 5 stars Sugar and Salt.......2005-11-18

I was a little wary of chirpy Joyce taking on the more brooding Dori and his compositions, but they accommodate each other to stir up a delicious concoction that tastes of sugar and salt. Kenny Werner fits right in with the Brazilian musicians and Tutty Moreno is just at the top of his game on the drum set. I just saw this band touring behind this album & if you like "painterly" drummers (e.g. Motian, DeJohnette), I urge you to go see Tutty Moreno when he comes to your town.

5 out of 5 stars High Energy Brasilian Dance Music.......2004-12-10

The frenetic pace of this CD is not for the faint of heart. I love all of the songs on here. I've never been able to see Daniela live, but I'd love to. Her raspy vocal delivery is what makes sets her apart from the rest. She proves that you can sing well and come out with danceable music. I also love that she is a songwriter. She is very proud of her heritage and that is so refreshing to hear in an artist. Her description of events, places she's been and where she is from is very lush and picturesque. If you know Spanish or Portuguese, Eléctrica would make for a more enjoyable audio experience. This is one of the best live albums that I own. Take Eléctrica home with you and you'll see what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars Great! A "Best Of" type album..........2004-10-25

If you can only buy one Olodum album, get this one! It has more recent songs and also some of their older hits. This album contains Olodum's previously unreleased version of "No Woman No Cry" - a legendary tribute! Some of Olodum's classics like "Rosa", "Alegria Geral", and "Berimbau" have been remixed and the surdos (base drums) have more of a kick now. On this album, Olodum has invited other stars to perform with them on some of the songs. For example, Ivete Sangalo in "Rosa", Jimmy Cliff in "No Woman No Cry"; it sounds fantastic! Expect nothing less than the finest Olodum beats!

5 out of 5 stars If you like Brazilian music, it's a MUST have!.......2000-06-13

I lived in Brazil for 3 years and love carnival and the music from Bahia. I have many of Olodum's CDs, and this one is one is great because it has some of the best songs from many of the old albums. Some of the tracks are sang with other important Brazilian singers, something that adds to the content of the CD. If you like brazilian music, it's a MUST have.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful and yet sweet.......2001-12-13

I agree that this album isn't Daniela's best album. All the same, it's still brilliant. Brazilians can often be heard lamenting the 'decline' of wonderful Brazilian music, but Daniela Mercury proves that this pessimism is unjustified. Brazilian football might be in decline, but Brazilian music isn't! I think that Daniela Mercury is one of the best singers Brazil has produced since Elis Regina. Yes, she really is that good! And like all Brazilian music, the combination of driving, complex rhythm and haunting, sensuous melody is remarkable and invigorating. Saying that this album isn't as good as her others is like saying that sapphires aren't as good as rubies, diamonds and emeralds -- all are very good! I don't believe that Daniela could ever produce something which isn't fantastic. She is a marvellous talent. I love her. When she breaks through into the US and British markets, she will blow everybody else off the stage.

5 out of 5 stars If only Brazil had the resources..........2000-09-22

This album is OTIMO! It's very Bahia, expressive and full of infectious Brazilian energy. In response to a previous critic's review regarding the "cheezy" sound of this recording, while the sound of this album does no justice for Daniela Mercury's voice AO VIVO (live), it is still a fine demonstration of her incredible talent and charisma. A must-have.

5 out of 5 stars Daniela coming to the Hollywood Bowl!.......2000-05-02

Thats right, come see Daniela in person at the Hollywood Bowl Sept.10. along with Jorge Ben, get your tickets ASAP from Ticketmaster or hollywoodbowl.org Daniela is going to ignite Hollywood and America!

5 out of 5 stars Excelente.......1999-07-26

3 out of 5 stars not the best example of her capabilities.......1999-03-11

Daniela Mercury, "La Mercury", the queen of Axé music is a chart-buster in Brazil, but this isn't her best album. It seems to have had a lower budget, being earlier. The instrumentation on some numbers is downright cheesy. For the best taste of her capabilities, I'd recommend "Feijão com Arroz"; it's got a better variety of styles, better musical arrangements, etc.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Salvador da Bahia Carnival MUST..........2005-02-17

Okay, if you're on your way to Salvador da Bahia to celebrate "carnaval", be it this year or any other, you're gonna' need this CD or one very much like it in order to become familiar with some of the Carnival hits. The 2003 version is filled with the drum-beat of the songs from carnival that year, including the winning tune of Carnival that year, Margareth Menezes' "Dandalunda."

Whether you plan on becoming a group member and dancing to Timbalada or flitting from one trio elétrico to the next as "popcorn", listening to Ivete Sangalo, Netinho and other old soteropolitano favorites, you will love to have a CD like Axé Bahia to remember the good times later on. Another of the great ones on here is "A Luz de Tieta", probably played at carnival every year, so the CD is also good if you want to start memorizing those lyrics before hopping on the plane to Brazil. Fun for parties, too!

Another stellar new release from France's legendary Yellow Productions. One of Brazil's most beautiful singers offers this release, filled with captivating flavors and composed of greatest hits, major French and Brazilian classics, and unreleased tracks to heat up the dance floor. Her mix of musical cultures ranges from bossa nova to African music by way of French songs by the greats such as Piaf, not to mention her sensuality, charm, and warmth. Salome de Bahia is already well-loved throughout the global dance music community for her Bob Sinclar produced "Outro Lugar".

      Customer Reviews:

      1 out of 5 stars YIKES! .......2007-03-03

If you are into Brazil/Electronica, DO NOT GO FOR THIS. I admit it is a fun CD but after the first track or so you start to think that maybe you should be playing shuffleboard on an old person's cruise or listening to this at a retirement center. It's just not up to date with what is considered modern Brazil/Bossa Nova/Electronica.

5 out of 5 stars Party Time - Brazilian Style!.......2006-01-31

Awesome collection of songs. I was wary that it may be too electronic or fusional... but not so! There are blazing instrumental parts and absolutely incredible, powerful and full-of-life vocals that will really make you want to dance! You will hardly even notice the electronic elements, as they only enhance all the live action. A great driving, party, or chore-doing CD. Seriously consider getting it! Lots of tracks, too!

5 out of 5 stars good brazilian vibes.......2005-10-17

Excellent disk. Salome de Bahia is a great singer and Bob Sinclar a great producer. It brings a fresh look to classic Brazilian tunes, as well as Salome's own.

      5 out of 5 stars Brasil is a bomb!.......2005-10-06

This cd takes some classical brasilian songs suchs as mas que nada and taj mahal and are remix with salome wonderful voice (from bob sinclar's outro lugar) that boosts these classic into something that makes you want to scream dance and shout out of hapiness and joy.

I remember listenig to this cd this past june with a firend in his car with our windows down and the music pumping
      it was awesome.

This is a great album if you like Axé this is the cd for you!

5 out of 5 stars Energy disquised as a CD!.......2005-03-27

I received this CD as a birthday gift from my Argentinian friend and I abso-freakin-lutely LOVE it! :D Although I don't speak or comprehend a word of Portuguese, I listen to this CD DAILY. Those of you on the road to getting fit, YOU NEED THIS CD! It is light, up-beat and very positive sounding and it has been really motivational for me to listen as I walk for an hour every day, when I work out, or even when I just need to relax and be mellow. I can't have enough POSITIVE things to say about Daniela Mercury's Feijao Com Arroz...in fact, all of her CDs are now on my ever-growing Wish List of Music! Definitely check this CD and this artist out!

5 out of 5 stars How long will it take for me to stop listening?!.......2005-02-17

"Quanto tempo tenho para matar essa saudade?"...The opening words to the first song, "Nobre Vagabundo" run through my mind time and again, as I listen to this CD for the umteenth time and remember my trip to Bahia. I think a large part of that "saudade" is this great CD and others like it filled with they unmatchable mix of rhythms and instruments from Bahia. Daniela is a Bahian icon, for Carnival, for gays, for Bahians, and she deserves it so much. And this CD is probably still her best, more perfect than her earlier work, but less sleek and refined than the CDs she has put out since. This will probably be THE Daniela Mercury classic CD for a while to come until her next true landmark (though I don't mean to put anyone off from getting her other CDs of course, since they are also highly enjoyable!) A few ballads, a few of what are now Carnival classics, a very well-known tune or two (e.g., "Você abusou")...Great lyrics. I have been dying for Daniela to give a concert somewhere near me ever since I discovered her, since she must be awesome live.

      5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2004-11-30

This CD is one of the best CD's of all time. You don't even have to speak portuguese to get lost in its magic. The music, the songwriting, the singing, the artistry is spectacular. It's like a grand Broadway Production, Brazilian style- with its haunting precussions and mesmerizing vocal performances. It's a tapestry for the soul and a colorful portrayal of the Brazilian culture- in all of its forms and styles. This is a musical event for anyone and everyone who loves music. Just close your eyes, take a deep breathe, hold on for dear life and let the rhythms sweep you into the SAMBA stratosphere.

5 out of 5 stars greatest CD of all time.......2003-04-30

I can't begin to say how good this CD is. I simply end up exhausted every time after I listen to it, from singing and dancing. Even though it is mostly high energy, dance music called axé, Daniela still has one of the greatest voices I've ever heard. And no-one can match her energy. There is not one bad, or even average, song on the CD. The best cuts are "A Primeira Vista", "Feijao de Corda", Dona Canô" and "Minas Com Bahia". It makes no difference whether you understand Portuguese or not, buy this CD. Afterward, you will be dying to go to Carnaval in Salvador, Bahia in Brasil.
