Tenor saxophonist Gene Ammons had a huge sound, and a Coleman Hawkins-inspired ability to belt the blues and caress the ballads with equal facility. This 1960 session, part of a lengthy series of recordings Ammons made for Prestige, shows off his strengths impressively. His broad-toned reading of the ballad "My Romance" confirms his reputation as the master interpreter nicknamed "Gentle Jug." The superbly-attuned rhythm section of pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Doug Watkins, drummer Arthur Taylor, and congero Ray Barretto offers particularly brilliant support on Eddie Haywood's memorable "Canadian Sunset," the uptempo bop exercise of Charlie Parker's "Confirmation," and the swing classic "(Stomping at the) Savoy." --John Swenson

5 out of 5 stars America's Pavarotti.......2007-03-25

Jug was a class act with a heart as big as his physical size and tone. Chicagoans greeted him like a war hero on the two occasions he appeared just after doing time at Joliet-- the second an especially cruel and unfair sentence of seven years for a parole violation. Because he usually followed Sonny Stitt--the "most perfect" of all players--in their tenor battles, he had the advantage of playing to low expectations--and he rarely failed to rise to the occasion. In fact, just being able to match Stitt was sufficient to assure a victory.

Stitt, the saxophonist most identified with Charlie Parker and reputed to have been bequeathed the "keys to the kingdom" by Bird himself, would seem to outmatch Ammons. But those listeners with longer memories or inclined to do a bit of research would know better than to underestimate Jug, the son of the highly regarded Kansas City boogie woogie pianist, Albert Ammons. Gene was still in his teens when Billy Eckstein hired him to sit next to Dexter Gordon in the same big band that included Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Kenny Dorham, and Fats Navarro, not to mention Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt, Wardell Gray, Art Blakey and Sarah Vaughan! At the end of his sets in the late '60s and early '70s, Jug used to love running down the line-up for his audience, all of it building up to his dramatic punch-line: "And what were all of these musical geniuses doing night after night?" (Pause) "Holding whole notes while Mr. B was balladeering on his hit songs, "I Apologize," "I Want to Talk About You," and "I'm Just a Prisoner of Love." (Pause) Who was a prisoner?"

The present RVG remaster captures Ammons at an optimal time. Following his last stay at Joliet, Jug would be greeted by a musical scene radically different from the one that he had left--Coltrane, Hendrix, Joplin not to mention the Beatles and Stones had reshaped the sonic environment he was accustomed to. Unfortunately, Ammons tried to adjust with uncharacteristic altissimo shrieking and forced elocution leading to unmistakable intonation problems. But Boss Tenor, recorded in 1960 and with the supremely gifted, exquisitely tasteful Tommy Flanagan on piano, finds Ammons with nothing to prove and doing what he did best--creating beautiful, heart-felt yet logically-constructed melodies and producing a sound that for many listeners has never been equaled--big but never "hard," simple and slightly raw but too lyrical and personal to be mistaken for R&B. True, it was gospel and blues-derived but free of any Motown shine and polish.

Recently I read a review crediting Ammons with inspiring R&B sounds of pop saxophonists like Junior Walker. If there's any question about the difference between a Junior Walker and a Gene Ammons, go directly to "My Romance," more full-bodied and sensual but no less sensitive than Bill Evans' version on the original Vanguard sessions. Ammons takes the tune through once, entrusting Richard Rodgers' poetic melody to the breathstream of the tenor's seductive voice, as reassuring as it is alluring. In short, it's as good a sound as the tenor saxophone is capable of producing. So, too, in a battle of tough tenors Ammons could play one note for the hundreds spewed forth by a Sonny Stitt or Johnny Griffin. Invariably, it was the right note.

4 out of 5 stars Oh Yes!.......2006-10-29

A Professional Tenor Sax Recording Artist suggested I listen to Boss Tenor because of Gene Ammons incredible sound.

This is Tenor Sax on the BIG side. I recommend this album to Saxophone players so they may marvel at the strength and tone of Gene Ammons playing.

Musically it is a fine album that is most enjoyable, but I have only given it four stars. It does not rival the best Be Bop Tenor albums ( A Love Supreme, Saxophone Collosus, Go, Inner Urge, See No Evil) but it is still a very fine example of a top player at his best.

5 out of 5 stars Gene is back!.......2005-11-01

After a two year "forced layoff" (the usual culprit for Gene: drugs), this marked his return album (6/16/60), which would be the first in a long string of albums (22) over the next two years. And it's a terrific one. The great Tommy Flanagan is aboard on piano ("The first time I ever played with him," Flanagan recalled), and the rhythm section is solid (Doug Watkins-b; Art Taylor-d; Ray Barretto-conga).

Tempos vary, as does the material. HITTIN THE JUG is a slow blues with good down-home Ammons. BLUE AMMONS is another blues, this time medium tempo. CONFIRMATION, the bop standard, is taken up and features some very relaxed Ammons. MY ROMANCE is taken a tad too slow and could use the double-time chorus, which is missing here, that Gene often employed when doing very slow ballads like this. Flanagan is excellent - I wish there was more of him solo-wise. This is a good return date for Ammons. Definitely worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Blues.......2005-10-11

This is a superb CD by Gene Ammons containing mainly blues and ballads played in a soulful manner with a huge tone on the tenor. Included are classic versions of the standards "My Romance" and Canadian Sunset". This is definitely a treasure in my expanding jazz collection.

5 out of 5 stars Addictive sound.......2002-10-22

Gene Ammons comes from a great family. His father Albert is one of my favorite boogie woogie pianists.
What makes Ammons such an attractive musician is his smooth but strong sound, and his light and flexible phrasing, displaying great control over all facets of his tenor.
To me, Ammons is one of the greatest ballad players in jazz. This should be obvious to anyone who had a chance to listen to the Gentle Jug cd's. The performance of My Romance on this cd does more than validate Ammons' ballad reputation.
There are two original blues by Ammons, on slow and one medium type, that show he is also a great blues man.
The supporting cast is as good as it gets for this kind of music - Tommy Flanagan on piano, Doug Watkins on Bass, Art Taylor on drums and Ray Barreto on Congas.
But overall, it is Ammons' sound and phrasing that makes me want to listen to him again and again. This mellow tenor sound that comes from the heart of this Boss Tenor.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......1999-08-27

Late night, low light. Sip your drink, sink in your chair. Alone. Befriended. You can't beat this record. You simply can't. Each and every song is a stern rebuke to the Kenny Gs of the world. Flows and flows and sooths. A great companion to this is 'Jug'.

3 out of 5 stars joined by Tommy Flanagan.......2004-12-28

Flanagan was making some great music around time (1960), including his own trio record a month earlier. His later date with Coleman Hawkins (1962, Today and Now) is similar to this record, but better (more interesting tunes, Hawk's more interesting vocabulary).

5 out of 5 stars Boss Tenor (20 Bit Mastering).......2003-06-03

It's been a while since I listened to Gene Ammons. I have a couple albums on vinyl but that go back to the 70's. This one is bad,and I am going to purchase it. I feel that Gene Ammons is right up there with the top sax players, the Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Stan Getz, Dexster Gordon and others.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece!.......2001-03-13

If you are home having a candlelight dinner with your love one and you want the PERFECT jazz to supplement the evening, absolutely nothing beats this cd. I GUARANTEE you will love it! NUFF SAID
