4 out of 5 stars An American Picnic.......2002-08-11

I have three of the Dinner Classics. "Dinner For Two" "Romance"
and "A Cocktail Party" All are wonderful cd's and I would like to find more, other than what is listed here. "An American Picnic" is good but I like "Dinner For Two" the best.

5 out of 5 stars Worth It.......1999-11-29

This album is one of the "must haves" in the great "Masterworks Dinner Classics" series. Beautiful!

2 out of 5 stars Why did they bother?.......2004-11-08

This box-set is pretty much a waste of everyone's time. The compilers have put far too much of their own (lack of) personality into the song selection and packaging for it to be of any lasting interest or worth to Scott Walker fans, whether of the casual or obsessive persuasion.
The compilers treat this box-set as five separate compilations, all leading "into the heart of Scott Walker", or some such pretentious blather. Much of Scott Walker's output does lend itself to the idea of compiling along thematic or stylistic lines, as opposed to strict chronological order, since he was often producing music in different styles or genres at the same time, often to the confusion of the listening public. These five "thematic" compilations, however, are far too personal and incomplete to cater for anyone other than the compiler themself. The themes themselves are generally infantile and the song selections are arbitrary; songs are most often grouped together on the basis of lyrical content or song titles. A more musically literate approach is necessary in compiling Scott Walker, no matter what the thematic decisions may be. Entire aspects of Scott Walker's recording career are disregarded (eg. most of the Walker Brothers, non-Brel covers from Scotts 1&2, the TV Series, early 70s albums) presumably in the interests of stressing the "cooler" and more fashionable aspects. There's a spare hour or so of unused space over the five discs which should have been put to use.
The booklet is a bit of an embarrassment, offering only sparse, generally idiotic quotes from celebrities, collected in an apparent attempt to convince us (or for the compiler to convince themself?) that it's cool to be into Scott Walker. Apart from that there's a short "Compiler's Note", comprising a lecture that goes on about how completists wear anoraks and don't listen to music, and rarities are rare because they're not worth hearing - no wonder no-one put their name to it. Never mind rarities (of which you won't find many on this box-set), what about (for example) some of the best tracks from Scott 4? And surely part of the point of a box-set is some sort of analysis, perspective, even information about the artist and the recordings? The booklet is a waste of paper, and the packaging overall is cheap and impractical.
The sound quality seems fine, but with no marked improvement over previous releases containing this same material.
The strangest thing about this box-set is that presumably it received approval from Scott Walker himself for its release. As he's apparently vetoed the release of other unavailable Scott Walker albums on CD, making fans go in search of old vinyl copies or bootlegs, and many CD releases are now out of print, it seems strange to be approving pointless releases like this. Just make the original recordings available - we can make our own compilations!
Unlike Scott Walker's music, this box-set seems to be going for style over substance. Even that wouldn't be so bad if the compilers had any...

2 out of 5 stars AVOID. Go with the individual albums........2004-02-19

OK, so, i adore Scott Walker but i have to say that this piece of crap was a complete let-down. The only reason i gave it two stars is because of the remastered versions of the tracks off "Climate of Hunter" and "Nite Flites" and some of the b-sides and soundtrack work. "Pola X" in particular is virtually impossible to find.

BUT WHAT on earth were they thinking? It's so weird, the way they pass off these quotes from contemporary artists as "liner notes." Is a casual fan going to shell out upwards of a hundred bucks for an artist they are unfamiliar with because Thom Yorke says to? Doubtful. So why are they trying to talk-up and sell us on the music that we obviously already love? I couldn't give a rats ***!

I thought the testimonials adorning the recent american NEU! reissues were very effective in "selling" the music to "the kiddies," but those were single discs and not such a big investment.

The track listing is also terrible. The set eschews chronological or any other sensible order in favor of some random guy's tastes. My copy does not have the manufacturing error some have reported on disc 3. I wish it did because I could copy the 6 tracks I need and return the thing.

Two other box sets I own, Velvet Underground and Burt Bacharach, are beautifully put together with extensive liner notes and tons of great photographs. I still spend time just looking at and listening to them. Scott is definitely on par with Burt and Lou in terms of influence and strange brilliance, so why is this set so skimpy and stupid? i'd like to smack the idiots who ILL-conceived it.

5 out of 5 stars get this and you'll be done.......2004-01-15

I know many fans, some who have reviewed here, aren't completely happy with this set. I certainly agree with the packaging quality. I just purchased Zombie Heaven, the complete Zombie collection, who were contemporaries of the Walker Bros. That set raises the standard for box sets of obscure artists.
But I still give this a five outta five. Considering just how uncommerical this guy's music is these days, (regardless of what era of Walker career you pick!) and how many strange looks I get when I play it, the fact that we have a new box set at all is a wonderful thing.

Fans of Dvine Comedy, Pulp, Suede, Bowie,Tricky,Tom Jones, Bjork,The Zombies, should check this guy out he influenced them all. The sound is great on my set.

5 out of 5 stars There are many flawed sets.......2004-01-14

There is a confirmed problem with Disc Three. Virgin and Tower Records have both contacted Mercury about the one-channel only Disc Three. Be warned.

5 out of 5 stars The review below is flawed.......2004-01-10

I just received my copy today from Amazon and Disc Three is fine. Clearly, the whole pressing is not defective and clearly there was no problem in mastering. My advice to Ferrara Brain Pan is to contact the label and ask for a new copy of Disc Three.

5 out of 5 stars Let theyself be hereby dubbed.........Best Broadway Tune Vocalist..........2007-06-21

Of my dozens and dozens of Broadway music performances, I find only one singer can be dubbed "Best." That person, Thomas Hampson, is thee. While show performers and ballad singers have all had their way with these tunes, only one is across-the-board great in them.

And whether or not these are the "best" representative songs of Porter is a moot point, something entirely up to personal taste. The point is that these songs have not been better performed by an individual male singer. It certainly doesn't hurt, either, that the great John McGlinn was on board as conductor/director (and likely strongly involved in arranging).

****

5 out of 5 stars This isn't a vanity crossover project but Cole Porter with art and style.......2006-07-17

The glut of crossover albums that came our way in the ripe era of Pavarotti and Domingo has abated, leaving not the best taste in the mouth. But there were some high points, and this 1991 Cole Porter collection from Thomas Hampson is a gorgeous example. Like his hero from the 30s, Lawrence Tibbett, who triumphed as much on radio as in the opera house, Hampson sings full out, applying an overtly operatic baritone to popular song. He has such a command of vocal technique that, as with Tibbett and more recently Ben Heppner, the glory of the vocalism would carry the day on its own.

But Hampson adds to this a good deal of finesse, humor, and suavity--particularly the last. "Begin the Beguine" and "In the Still of the Night" convey the cosmopolitan asurance that is a Cole Porter trademark. There are also some bigger songs, such as "It Was Written in the Stars," where Hampson can unleash his voice at full force, a thrilling experience. I don't think there's been an opera star who's made a Cole Porter recording other than Kiri Te Kanawa, in forty years. This is a very enjoyable one indeed.

1 out of 5 stars pure self indulgent garbage.......2006-04-22

SOMEONE PLEASE STOP THOMAS HAMPSON, BEFORE HE HURTS HIMSELF...OR HURTS THE REST OF US....What a collective piece of trash this album is?..is there a more self-important, bloated, indulgent, precious, affected, pompous singer on the planet?...i am waiting for Thomas Hampson sings Disco...or Thomas Hampson sings Elton John...or Thomas Hampson does Eminem?...he probably thinks he could pull 'em off...what unmitigated gaul...don't waste your money here

4 out of 5 stars Thank god, no astaire or kelly singing on this one.......2001-04-30

This was a great listen and it was finally nice to hear trained singers doing Porter. Can't stand it when I hear a lilting Porter song in an MGM film and then Astaire or Gene Kelly decide to try and sing it, usually off key, and end up slaughtering the number. Great to hear some of the old stuff and different takes on other standards.

5 out of 5 stars Cole must have been watching over this project.......2000-09-06

John McGlinn's orchestrations on this compilation of Cole Porter tunes have as much to do with the brilliance of this CD as Mr Hampson's vocal renderings. Both have that lush sound that make a Porter tune sound like what this reviewer believes Porter would have appreciated, judging by his own versions of his songs, and the arrangements that he was involved in. McGlinn remained faithful to those original arrangements and added a few of his own ideas and along with modern day recording improvements produced a sound that I think Porter would very much approve of. My only complaint is the selection of songs, but that as always comes down to personal taste. However in doing so I was tuned into a few songs that I had never heard before, some of which are now among my favorite Porter songs. Specifically, 'Who said Gay Paree' is a sublime version of a lesser known Porter tune. It is one of his tunes about Paris but unlike the others its a sad tune of love lost with McGlinn and Hampson both at their finest. Another one new to me was'My Cozy Little Corner In the Ritz' an early Porter tune with him at his sarcastic best and a brilliant rendition. The standards are all briliantly done. 'In the Still of the Night' is my favorite, followed by I Concentrate on You', 'Easy To Love', 'Night and Day' (edging out Sinara's version, but not quite as magical as Fred Astaire's from the movie 'Gay Divorcee', but close) 'I've Got You Under My Skin' is divine, Begin the Beguine and 'Don't Fence me in'. All the others are great versions but none would make my top 50 Porter tunes. With the convenience of tracking with CD's though I program my favorites in and hear an hour of heavenly music from one of my favorite tunesmiths as interpreted by two contemporary masters of our time.

5 out of 5 stars Glitter, and inimitability.......2005-12-14

The glitter of the Gondoliers and the inimitability of Iolanthe come over in this recording.

The stars, give the taste of the era nad the original, one must ignore the fast tempo of these recordings: the need to fit evry item to the procrustean bed of a 10" 78 record necessitated that they be sung somewhat faster than in normal productions, and when you compare the play time of the '60s & 70's CD's, they are not all that faster.

To hear Lytton as the Duke in the Gondoliers is to be transported back to that very era. I for one want a tardis, to go back and induce them to use him throughout the series: it really depends what one wants of course If you want a note perfect rendition then you have to stick with Baker, if you want the flavour of the performance than it has to be Lytton. Only Peter Pratt approaches the acid attack that he gives (Why DID PP go so early and leave us to JR's milk & water early performances???)

The sound level of items transcribed from shellacs ( san I am old enough to have heard the shellacs!!) is the result of almost miraculous sound engineering.

Bertha Lewis gives the definitive rendition of the duchess's role never to be really approached untill the performances of Anne Drummond Grant in the 50's (another great savoyard for whom "Death called too soon")

Leo Sheffield's light baritone gives a completely different weight to the character than any of the later exponents, and agin this to me suggests a man with a light humerous touch, tongue in cheek, he is going to have it his way ( until Inez blows him off course in the closing moments ) "Do not give way.." is covering up the fact that the grief will soon be very real, and ( in the way of 18th C ( ??Methodism) setting )) fatal! but he will "Not have the innovation perpetrated...

Winifred Lawson's soaring topnotes take me back to the note in Gramophone from the '60s ( ace of club's heyday) " needs cutting2 I.E. DAMPING DOWN: but keep them! keep them!! they are again part of the era.
Altogether I will be completing the run at the rate of one a month till the last peter pratt & Donald Adams is safe on my rack!!

    5 out of 5 stars Terrific re-issue at rock-bottom price.......2005-01-15

Source: Studio recordings dating from 1927 for "The Gondoliers" and 1930 for "Iolanthe." I assume this CD re-issue was compiled from mint-condition 78s which have not been subjected to significant remastering. "The Gondoliers" was originally issued on 24 sides and "Iolanthe" would have been about the same.

Sound: Amazingly good mono, considering the great age of the performances, and in many ways comparable to first-generation LPs. There is a low but easy-to-ignore hiss that probably appeared in the original matrices. Voices of soloists are very well captured. The choruses sound fine, although a little distant and slightly compressed. If the orchestra seems just a bit compressed by digital era standards, nevertheless, the sound is good and full of detail. The CD tracks tend to follow the three-and-a-half minute takes of the original 78s. This is apparent to the eye--if not to the ear--in "Iolanthe" when the track changes during the grand entrance of the peers about thirty seconds before the end of the music. Reflecting the original sides, there is often, but not always, a brief roll-off into dead silence before the next number begins.

Text: No dialogue. The performing text and the order of pieces is that established by W. S. Gilbert and used on stage by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company throughout most of the 20th Century. Arthur Sullivan was a man was forever late in composing his music. Overtures were just about the last things composed. Fast approaching deadlines sometimes forced Sullivan to call on the assistance of Frank Cellier, the regular conductor for the comic operas. Sullivan would set out the order of pieces and the overall approach, leaving Cellier to do the orchestral arrangements. In both "The Gondoliers" and "Iolanthe," however, scoring for the overtures was done entirely by Sullivan.

Format: Four discs, with two discs per opera, one for each act.

Documentation: No libretto. Cast list. Single page summary of the plot of each act.

The 1927 "Gondoliers" was the second of the Savoy Operas to be recorded in the newly-developed electronic process. Its cast were second generation Savoyards. None of them appeared in leading roles during the original London runs, but Sir Henry Lytton--imagine, being knighted for doing G&S!--was understudy in the lead comic roles in London by 1886 and soon heading up D'Oyly Carte touring companies.

Although never a regular member of the D'Oyly Carte Company, George Baker recorded Giuseppe, one of the romantic leads in the "The Gondoliers" in 1927 and, because HMV engineers didn't much like the way Lytton's voice recorded, stepped up to recording the comic lead in "Iolanthe." His recording career involved more than 3,000 recordings (with nearly as many false names) and would stretch right into the 1960s, when he recorded leading comic parts in Sir Malcolm Sargent's stereo series of G&S recordings.

By 1930, the second generation of Savoyards was largely gone, leaving only Bertha Lewis, Leo Sheffield and a junior member, Derek Oldham. Darrel Fancourt and Leslie Rands, two stalwarts of the third generation, both well-remembered from post-World War II recordings, appear in "Iolanthe."

These recordings were made under the personal supervision of Rupert D'Oyly Carte, whose father, Richard, had founded the opera company and been a partner with Sullivan (happily) and Gilbert (stormily); whose step-mother, Helen, had succeeded to control of the company, and whose daughter, Bridget, would run it with a whim of iron well past the middle of the 20th Century. Rupert must have been a pretty odd duck, since P. G. Wodehouse, a schoolmate, insisted that he was the model for PGW's first great fictional character, the incomparable Psmith. Whatever the eccentricities of the D'Oyly Cartes, this early series of recordings must be regarded as definitive in setting out the English G&S performance tradition.

These performances of "The Gondoliers" and "Iolanthe" have the virtues of all D'Oyly Carte Company recordings: excellent, rigidly disciplined choruses and soloists with superb English diction. Alas, the soloists also suffer from the curse of English vocal training.

Among many dedicated G&S fanatics, Henry Lytton is regarded as a fine comic actor but terrible singer. In the short part of the Duke of Plaza-Toro in "The Gondoliers," he certainly acts very well indeed. He chooses to take great freedoms with written musical rhythms in order to achieve dramatic, or rather, comedic effect. If he was not as good a singer as Martyn Green, his great successor, he was a world better than the comedy man of the sixties and seventies, John Reed. In fact, the voices of Lytton and Reed sound remarkably, even eerily similar, but the older man was entirely free of the egregious quirks and would-be funny bits that often made Reed so annoying.

It is the given wisdom among the many hardcore G&S fans (see above) that Derek Oldham was the best tenor who ever recorded a Savoy opera. Don't believe them. Oldham was all right, but the finest actor ever to take the lead tenor parts was Oldham's successor, Leonard Osborn, while the finest singer was probably Richard Lewis, who recorded in Sargent's stereo series.

Leo Sheffield, who joined the D'Oyly Carte Company five years before the death of W. S. Gilbert and had been directed by the fierce old man, himself, was a wonderful performer, and one who did not suffer from excessive care for musical notes as written. He had a lighter, drier, more agile voice than those later associated with his parts. By 1930, the heavier, darker sounding Darrel Fancourt was firmly in place.

Bertha Lewis was a classic English hooting contralto. W. S. Gilbert was notorious for making unkind fun of middle-aged, hefty women--the parts she played. Arthur Sullivan was usually a man of gentler impulses and always a more suave individual than Gilbert, but he made his own kind of musical fun, allowing Lewis to be subtly hilarious from beginning to end.

All the other soloists are fine--and very, very British, even more so than their successors in later decades.

Harry Norris conducts "The Gondoliers" and Malcolm Sargent leads "Iolanthe." Both are rhythmically sensitive and do a good job keeping things moving. Sargent is blessedly free of the ponderousness that afflicts his later series. I found Norris to be the less precise, but more satisfying of the two. He leads the fastest peformance of "The Gondoliers" that I've ever heard.

This set presents two of the best of the G&S comic operas at a rock-bottom price, with surprisingly good sound and first-class performances. It is a must-have for a serious lover of G&S. For those of you who more concerned with performance than reproduced sound, this set is a steal!

For those of you who cringe before the thought of non-digital sound, walk away. This not for you. (Why have you wasted your time by reading this far?)

Five stars, no question about it.

5 out of 5 stars Best versions ever!.......2004-01-04

These recordings from 1928 and 1930 are the definitive versions for these operas. They are possibly the best recordings ever of any G&S operas. They were made in the heyday of the D'Oyly Carte 1920's revival of the operas. Some of the performers had worked in their youth with Gilbert. Gosh it shows. Here is superb singing combined with wonderful charactisations. The way it should be done. Sargent's and Norris' tempi seem just right, and each opera sparkles. How lucky we are to have records from such a golden age of Gilbert and Sullivan. A must for any collector of music for the theatre.

          5 out of 5 stars Jazz Piano.......2007-01-22

I attended a concert two nights ago with Larry Fuller on piano with the John Pizzarelli quartet. Larry was unbelievable on the piano. He IS jazz. It was fascinating watching his hands moving over the keys with lightning speed, yet in perfect sync and harmony. Could not wait to buy this cd. Wish he had more cds out there. He is a virtuoso. Am enjoying it now. Favorite pieces are Honeysuckle Rose (which he performed in concert) and Candy's Blues, which is his own composition.

However, all the songs are good. And if you like smooth jazz, you will like this cd. And of course, Ray Brown is always good. Easy listening!

          5 out of 5 stars Marvelous.......2006-10-30

I had heard Larry Fuller on two previous CD's of the Jeff Hamilton Trio: "Live at Steamers" and "Hands On." I assumed this album would be great and I was right. I absolutely love the deliberate way Fuller plays. He's not giving you a flurry of notes for no reason. Every note is specifically chosen.

In addition, Ray Brown and Jeff Hamilton are in fine form. Hamilton's drum fills and Brown's solos are always a joy to hear. The recording, however, does not capture the richness of Ray Brown's tone on the bass. I think other Ray Brown recordings are good for that.

The selections are varied and interesting. Each tune feels distinct, which makes the entire CD that much more engaging.

          I highly reccommend this recording!

          5 out of 5 stars Mr T=Soul/Compassion/Groove.......2001-12-16

This is record is the one that I have I played most frequently over the years and in my opinion perhaps the best Stanley ever did.The music is loaded with soul and compassion with Turrentine playing so well .so well.....the piano player here is McCoy Tyner, Bob Cranshaw on bass and "in the pocket groove" master Mickey Roker on drums
Every track is a real highlight...Stanley is very affirmative.. the chords progressions are just a piece of cake for him..one of the things that makes this recording so very good is McCoy Tyners pianoplaying... at this time he just left Coltrane.. and seems here to enjoy playing mainstream stuff again..his playing is full of joy and are at the same time a tremendous backup to Stans playing..(you can hear that on the outro of "Yours is my heart alone")
The quartets version of the old standard "Foggy Day" is the most soulful version I ever heard. Here is also the original verison of the soon legendary Stans Shuffle...Stanley recorded it again on his last recording date... McGriff just recently recorded it.. so has Mel Rhyne
This recording is a comprehension of everything that I like in the jazz music.
