Between dozens of recordings made from 1937 to 1950, legendary French gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt waxed one, maybe two titlesof solo guitar per year. Often it was less than that. Sometimes he made them at the request of the producers, who surely heard him warming up and decided to capture on records some of that magic atmosphere. Then Django took his instrument and performed whatever was on his mind: in occasions fully developed solo compositions; another times, instantly made up improvisations. This outstanding CD comprises them all for the first time in chronological order, including some very rare tracks and a recently discovered solo from a radio program as a bonus track. 5 out of 5 stars the way brouwer meant it to sound.......2003-11-03

Brouwer himself states that Papandreou preforms his works the way they're supposed to, and I totally aggree!
Papandreou has a great sonority, an unbelievably balanced and astonishing technique, and most of all a profound interpretation. Brouwer himself once stated in an interview that his music is really easy to interpret, if you just play what he mentions in his partitures. Of course this is a little bit to modest of the great composer, but he obviously wanted to make clear that he wants the preformer to play exactly what's in the score, and this is, contrary to a bunch of other guitarists, certainly what Papandreou does on this cd. You can hear every little musical instruction brouwer put into his scores, plus a profound understanding of all the secrets of the pure magic this music holds.
Add to this the low price of this record, and you get a 5*-buy.

Hopefully, Denon will produce more of the same. This time they supply the names of their artists. Well Done! Bravo!

Aside from the odd Ravi Shankar project, classical and world music fusions seldom seem to work. Here's one that does. Violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg teams up with Brazilian guitarists Sergio and Odair Assad on a set heavily influenced by the gypsy music of Europe and the Middle East. Written mostly by Sergio Assad, these are lively compositions, with dizzying guitar parts punctuated by Salerno-Sonnenberg's piercing violin to great effect. "Andalucia" is a stunning display of the trio's interplay; "The Chase" will appeal to flamenco lovers; and "Gypsy Songs" is a medley of traditional Hungarian folk tunes. On Django Reinhardt's "Nuages," the tempo unfortunately plods along, but "Somogy's Dream"--based on the gypsy music of Transylvania--is a glorious closer. If you like the guitar and world music, or were enthralled by Joshua Bell's Short Trip Home classical fusion disc, you'll love this. --Jason Verlinde

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful CD.......2004-01-03

I listen to this CD frequently. All of the numbers are super and the interaction of the guitars and violin are glorious.

    5 out of 5 stars A luminous, brilliant performance.......2002-06-03

Sergio Assad's clever improvisations on melodies ranging from "Dark Eyes" and Django Reinhardt's "Nuages" to traditional Russian, Slavic and Turkish melodies are beautifully rendered by this string trio. Percussion is added to some tracks, and the phantomic voice of either Nadja or another female vocalist (sister Badi Assad?) is present, nearly in the background, of one haunting song.

The complaints in some reviews here, such as grousing over a lack of discernible melodies, are largely unfounded.

Of course we don't get "Greensleeves" or "Danny Boy" or any familiar, sentimental favorites. And, of course, these tracks are not for the fans of Jim Nabors or Montovani.

But lush, romantic, and witty, dashing tunes abound. A degree of musical sophistication and experience as a listener helps. But anyone who can listen with pleasure to Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea will love this album. It's not nearly as far out as Elliot Carter's String Quartets or Crumb's "Ancient Voices of Children." Not at all, as some reviewers might lead you to believe.

The playing is virtuosic, and I am a classical guitarist and can testify with a technically educated ear. The Thomas Humphrey guitars the Assads play ( one a spruce top and one a cedar top) blend beautifully under Nadja's violin.

One is nearly tempted to make symbolic comparisons here, marking the bird of the violin singing over the ocean of melody pouring from the guitars, or some such silly thing.

Why? Because the whole performance is braided with an erotic yet intellectual chain of musical perfection tied to vital, soaring imagination.

Like the Assad Brothers' Piazzolla album, this one is a must-have for fans of contemporary acoustic music, classical guitar or simply luscious string playing. The gypsy melodies themselves are a magical enough suite to warrant buying this disk.

2 out of 5 stars I Concur with the Disappointed Ones.......2001-07-04

I too am a fan of Nadja, that is what led me to this, as well as being a classical guitar lover. I've only played this three times, and that will be it.

The music leaves me grasping for something else, anything else on my shelf. Certainly there are great musical talents here. Likely, they enjoy the challenge musically. But for the listener class such as we, we'll put our listening time and 5-star reviews with others.

If this is representative of fusion, count me out.

    5 out of 5 stars Fiery!.......2000-10-20

I've been a great fan of the Odair Assad's compositions since hearing the "Natsu no Niwa" (Did I get the title right?) suite they released a few years back. This album was not disappointing at all. Odair has a wonderful, lyrical sensitivity and does justice to the various Spanish folk themes, evoking fiery passion and beauty within an intimate setting. A critic once called the Assad Bros. a "four-armed guitar virtuoso," and he was right on the money with that. Ms. Salerno-Sonnenberg's playing is absolutely stunning and is perfectly on par with the Brothers' virtuosic ability. I truly hope that Odair will compose regularly, and not just for the guitar either!

    1 out of 5 stars Very Dissapointed.......2000-09-26

I'm a music lover, not a critic, but I know what I like! The premise of this album caught my eye, but unfortunately, not my ear. I love traditional Middle Eastern and Indian music and have purchased several crossover albums over the years that have been fairly successful attempts to bridge cultural differences. Unfortunately, this album is not one of them.

These are certainly hightly talentd artists, but their collective interpertations of these "tunes" not only destroy their ethnicity but also their beauty.

I fail to understand the rationalization behind taking traditional tunes and warping them into some post-modern mush. Those diminished/augmented/6ths over dropped 7th clashings grate on my nerves! Sometimes I get the impression that "serious" classical artists are not permitted to play beautiful melodies lest they destroy their reputations. Guess we still have to leave that job up to the traditionalist musicians.

I was hoping that, after several listenings, this album would grow on me. No so. Sorry, the musical statements on this album go way over my head. It's headed for the resale bin.

    3 out of 5 stars Selectively Worthwhile.......2006-01-22

This chestnut from Butch Baldassari's Nashville Mandolin Ensemble is a mixed bag. Parts of it are very much worth a listen. I particularly like their rendition of the Allman Brothers classic "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," and while their take on Hoagy Carmichael's "Stardust" isn't transcendent, it's pretty sharp. It's especially noteworthy how much sound the ensemble is able to get out of only six instruments with a fairly narrow range of sound.

But not all of it bears up to repeated listening. The "Bluegrass" section of the album is worthwhile, but the "Bach>>Beatles" part is awkward. The renditions of "Sleepers Awake" and "With a Little Help From My Friends" sound really thin, and the "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring," one of the more enduringly moving pieces from Bach's body of work, comes across as kind of sleepy. The sound the ensemble gets out of their instruments is big, but not varied, and especially on the three classical pieces that kick of the album, the effect is an unearned sense of being almost tepid.

Because it's fairly inexpensive, this album is probably worth getting for the second half of the playlist, which is very much listenable. But if you're going to play the album more than once you need to be selective in your listening. Worthwhile but spotty, this album is a valiant addition to the canon of mandolin music, but not something that will rest permanently in your CD changer.

    5 out of 5 stars Monstrously good!.......2005-05-25

Playing Time - 50:51 -- With over a decade under their belts, The Nashville Mandolin Ensemble has now trimmed down to a tight-knit and lean sextet for their fourth album, a presentation of 15 numbers recorded live at Vanderbilt University. The group features mando-family instruments (mandolins, mandola, mandocello) supplemented with 5-string viola, guitar and bass. The artists include Butch Baldassari, Stephan Dudash, Walter Carter, John Hedgecoth, Van Manakas, and David Spicher. In keeping with the program and album's title ("Bach, Beatles, Bluegrass"), the album opens with three neat classical Bach compositions, followed by three meaty selections from John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

The "bluegrass" is much more than just that with tunes from the genres of jazz, Gypsy, swing, Dawg, new acoustic and old-time music. Contempoary compositions from mandolinist Charlie Provenza and guitarist Roger Hudson are first-rate-and-a-half. It's amazing to hear what these hot pickers do with a number like "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," written by Dickey Betts, who was lead guitarist with the Allman Brothers in the sixties and seventies. Then, they can also evoke images of a moonlit evening at a café in Paris with their simply dee-lish appeteaser, "Nuages" from Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. It's a joy to hear musicians of this caliber take on a wide range of material from "Stardust" to "Happy Birthday, Bill Monroe." Ensemble member Butch Baldassari contributes a bouncy original "Jack Rabbit Trail," which provides some icing for this mandocake. Not losing sight of their roots, two traditional numbers close out the album. Walter Carter, mandola player, is deserving of special recognition for his quality and classy arranging of seven of the songs. For a live recording, the sound quality is excellent and fortunately no annoying audience applause is included. This album is monstrously good, and it is further proof that Nashville currently sports one of the finest mandolin ensembles in the world. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

5 out of 5 stars A tribute doesn't mean to copy the model.......2007-03-26

Here Joe Pass played a tribute to one of his heroes, Django Reinhardt without copying him. Why copy another musician? This would be really wrong! As a total master and an absolute artist himself, Joe knew what does it mean to have a personality in music (and WHY not to clone other musicians). So he tributed Django, maintaining his own personality and ideas. It needs an amateur to think that a giant like Joe Pass should pay a tribute to Django trying to sound like him, mimicking him. It is so ridicolous that it almost makes me laugh. A lot of guys who wrote bad reviews here probably are amateur Jazz musicians or casual listeners that judged superficially this album from Joe maybe expecting something near Django's gypsy Jazz. Nothing more wrong. Joe played himself here, think about it ... why copying Django from Joe's perspective? If one want to listen to Django's music, he should buy Django's records. Of course. You buy a Joe Pass record because you want to hear Joe Pass playing, maybe Django's compositions, but in Joe's own manner. This is absolutly obvious!! This is just the same spirit of jazz. Jazz is THIS thing. You don't buy a record from Oscar Peterson because you want to hear the songs written by Cole Porter for instance, but because you want to hear Oscar's interpretations of those songs. It is the spirit of Jazz. The musician is the most important thing in Jazz (not the material), his ideas, his personality. So even if I love Django I wouldn't want to hear Joe mimick Django. Tha one would be a really UN-artistic record, an horrible experience. I know that Joe is a MASTER musician, a musicians' musician himself and that he wouldn't do this for the world. He recorded a Charlie Parker tribute too, but he didn't sound exactly like Bird there just to make some uneducated listener happy. He expressed his love to Bird (like here he expressed his love to Django), Bird was one of his greatest influences, but he didn't copy him there, just like he did not copy Django in this album. So this is proudly a Joe Pass album. And one of his best I have to say. I love his solo efforts (the fourth is his best,... he played only the acoustic guitar, terrific ..) but I prefer his bebop sides. This is one of his best (another very good one is the live date Joyspring). His ideas are splendid here as they are always been by the way, his groove absolutly in shape, his harmonic conceptions wonderful. Moreover this disc has a wonderful balanced sound because there's another guitar in the rhytmic team, Joe Pisano. Another extremely talented player by the way ... but here the star is not Joe Pisano and is neither Django. The star is Joe Pass. Django is the one who, if he was alive, would like a lot this tribute and would understand completly why Joe sounded so different from him. Because Joe is a star as big as Django himself with a style strong as Django's. A wonderful album, finally remastered and with its original cover. I did buy the japanese edition and I am absolutly happy I did. An album that I will listen for the rest of my life (uh, I'm a pro Jazz guitarist, didn't I tell you?).

5 out of 5 stars An Overlooked Classic!!!!.......2006-11-07

Besides his solo albumns, this is my favorite Joe Pass Record! If you are a student trying to assimilate the bebop language this would probably be one of the best guitar recordings you could listen to and transcribe.
    Hear are my reasons...
    1. the playing sounds so inspired, natural, and alive
    2. it's just so much fun to listen to
    3. Joe's concept seems to work better for some tunes like "All the things you are." Wes breaks my heart and you should definitely hear him and learn from him but his concept is totally different.
    4. it is better to transcribe entire solos... and the solos on this record aren't 10 minutes long.
    5. this is the definition of playing "in the pocket"

If you like this one, try out Joyspring - its a live recording

p.s. I am Jazz guitarist/teacher with a degree in classical guitar

    5 out of 5 stars strongly recommended........2006-08-26

this album is from joe pass's early carrier, released in his early thirties. this ablum features joe as the only solo player backed by three piece rythm - guitar/bass/drums. demonstrates that he's also a great single line bebop player on a few tunes. joe plays the standards from django's repetoire with his own bop interpretation. it has a great mix of ballards and swing. the harmony and lines that you hear on this album is unmistakably joe. a great hard bop album. a must buy.

3 out of 5 stars Pass is No Django.......2006-08-18

Sorry, I suppose I'm not a Joe Pass fan, though I recognize him as a great jazz guitarist, but his interpretations of Django's work left me cold.

Let me qualify that I am an amateur guitar player, that I do not have an inherent love of much of jazz probably because much of it reminds me of elevator music, that I am currently working on acquiring a taste for jazz (as one might acquire a taste for, say, beer), and am in the process of learning the jazz standards mainly to make myself a more accomplished guitar player.

That said, I can listen to Django and gypsy-jazz stylists like Jorgenson all day long, but this album got only one listen through for me. Pass may have captured Django's tunes note-for-note but he leaves the emotional component and the gypsy style too far behind. You'd better be a Pass afficionado to buy this album, and, if you are, you'll hear some great guitar playing (which is why I gave it 3 stars instead of 2), but please don't form opinions about Django's work from it. Listen to Django instead.

3 out of 5 stars Too much hype--let's get real.......2005-04-26

This is a somewhat disappointing release. Less than 33 minutes and it's not remastered--the sound is acceptable but not great. Three of the songs, Nuages, Night and Day & Limehouse Blues are available on other Cds in better-recorded versions, are longer in length and are done solo. In fact, none of the songs are done solo. If you're a completeist then you'll get this, but it's not Joe's best. Also, none of the songs try to emulate Django's style as one might expect. The songs were either written by Django Reinhardt, Django's favorites, or written as a tribute to Django--but they do not attempt to sound like Django Reinhardt at all. If you're new to Joe Pass, then start with his Virtuoso CD, then move on to his other solo recordings on Pablo.

5 out of 5 stars Forerunner to Sky.......2006-02-23

This CD is really a compilation of the 3 "experimental" albums John Williams did before his venture with the Prog Rock group Sky. So if you are a classical purist then you might not like this CD. Otherwise, it's a rare combination of songs from "Changes", "The Height Below", and "Travelling" - the 3 albums that eventually led to Sky. Also, a few songs from his work with Cleo Laine are thrown in.

The overall style of this CD is like a soundtrack (such as the music from "The Deer Hunter"). But it still features great guitar work as well (several from Bach). Williams' playing is clean and crisp - whether he is playing a straight classical piece or doing an accompanyment. You will see he is accomplished in both roles with this CD. Classical purists might consider this "light weight" but the rest of us call it accessable and interesting.

Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra here offer a veritable tour of the swing era. Kunzel has been conducting the orchestra since its formation in 1977. The set includes many of swing's cornerstone numbers, of course including Duke Ellington's "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)," which is also celebrated as the source of the genre's name. The music flourished in the '30s and '40s, popularized by composers and bandleaders such as Count Basie, Glenn Miller, and the Dorsey brothers. To help realize this project, a number of vocalists were enlisted, all of whom have current resumes rich with forays into the swing era: the Manhattan Transfer, John Pizzarelli, and Janis Siegel (who's also a member of the aforementioned vocal quartet). From soaring group vocals on such numbers as "Skyliner" to straight-ahead instrumental grooves as on Benny Goodman and Lionel Hampton's "Flying Home," this 14-song set celebrates the swing era by making it sound fresh today. --David Greenberger

      1 out of 5 stars Disappointing Vocals.......2003-08-21

The orchestral approach to swing used on this recording unfortunately makes this date sound anemic. The swing band sound that is in integral part of this song list is either missing or meagerly represented among the orchestral arrangements and the hollow sounding concert hall acoustics. Worst of all, the Manhattan Transfer are mixed down so far that they almost sound like they don't get their own mikes. For anyone who loves MT as much as I do, this recording is a sadly wasted opportunity. Very disappointing. They deserve so much better.
