4 out of 5 stars Big fat guy with a Big Fat sound ! ! ! .......2007-04-10

This is hard and heavy funk and soul - - literally... big, beefy, brassy...
Sadly, the lead singer, the 400lb. Baby Huey died a year before it was released.
Actually, the band itself is worth the purchase... however, no doubt, Baby Huey fronted it.
- - Tracks include classic "Memphis" type soul (typical to the era) as well as the live funky horn and percussion driven high energy grooves that make the album worth the purchase... Though true, many of the tunes aren't THAT much different than their covers (or sound like you heard them before) the energy is definitely there... A high point being Curtis Mayfield (who signed him)'s MIGHTY MIGHTY SPADE AND WHITEY which is just as good (if not better) than the original.... you can really feel the party atmosphere!

A few tunes seem a cross between RIPPLE and BLACK HEAT... admittedly as a whole the album is not all RAW FUNK... however when the band does go into RIPPING mode... they RIP... A few tunes even have an (early) Chicago influence while others are typical Wilson/Otis/Bobby Womack-ish influenced soul... though again, the album shines for its group sound - - a favorite tune of mine being MAMA GET YOURSELF TOGETHER, with its cranked up horn/rhythm guitar driven groove (with a suspiciously Booker T'ish type setting on a really fat sounding Hammond.)

If you like this type of stuff, I'd definitely get KASHMERE TEXAS THUNDER SOUL (actually first...)

3 out of 5 stars Classic Horn Band.......2007-01-09

For those who are fans of Chicago Transit Authority and Blood Sweat and Tears, this album presents another side of the "horn band" sound of the late '60's and '70's. Funky, raw and over the top approach to the music.

5 out of 5 stars THE LEGEND SAYS IT ALL.......2007-01-03

ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS A LEGEND IN IT'S SELF. LISTEN TO ME REMINDS ME OF BACK IN THE DAY WHEN I USE TO GO OUT TO THE CLUBS AND THE GUYS WOULD BE BREAK DANCING ON THE FLOOR. (AHHH THE GOOD OLE DAYS) THIS CD IS A CLASSIC A MUST BUY!

5 out of 5 stars "Listen to Me," Baby Huey is the real deal.......2006-10-24

James "Baby Huey" Ramey died before his album came out in 1971, but put on the first track, "Listen to Me," and you know this sucka is immortal. Baby Huey is R&B, soul, rock'n'roll, and psychedelia all rolled into one 400-pound fireball of pure talent and grit. The sucka could sing and he was backed by the tightest band on earth. Sucka played for royalty, sucka played for the hood, sucka died while making this debut album that would have sent him to the top of the world. Do yourself a favor and buy this album now! Your booty will thank me later.

5 out of 5 stars A soul/blues.funk/psychedelic classic........2005-08-08

'Huey, a chicago native, was a protege of Curtis Mayfield (who produced this album and released it via his Curtom imprint) and somewhat of an eccentric. He was 400 pounds, had a huge afro, a King Tut beard and dressed flamboyantly. The picture on the back of this album is priceless : him in a pinstripe suit with a huge ankle length robe over it standing reading a cookbook. He recorded a handul of singles and died of a heartattack aged 26 before this album came out in 1970

He took his cues from Chicago groups like The Impressions (the group Curtis Mayfield fronted before going solo), Mayfield himself, the psychedelic blues albums by Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf released on legendary Chicago label Chess Records in the late 60's and then mixed them with some raw, ballsy Stax soul via Booker T & The M.G's melting pot to create something that only Mayfield, Issac Hayes, James Brown, Funkadelic and Sly Stone managed to better.

You have the driving, gritty soul of "listen to me" & "hard times", the funked-up psychedelic blues of "mighty mighty" & "runnin'" (which Mayfield wrote and later recorded but the Huey original is the definitive version), instrumental jams like "mama get yourself together" & "one dragon, two dragon" and, finally, you have what have to be two of the greatest cover versions ever recorded : his funked up version of "california dreamin'" and his staggering 9 minute + version of Sam Cooke's "a change is gonna come" which has to be heard to be believed.

Rap fiends should definately check this album as it's been sampled to death over the years and "listen to me" was a party favorite back in the days of Bronx block parties in the 70's. If you're a fan of blues or Hendrix and would like to start investigating soul/funk but find James Brown too dancefloor friendly or Marvin Gaye too polished then this would a good starter along with the first 3 Curtis Mayfield studio albums.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars what a session.......2003-07-11

For Art Pepper this session must have seemed heaven sent. As if he had spent what seemed a lifetime walking down an abandon road in the middle of nowhere enveloped in 120 degree heat. Finally, at the end of the road stood a man with a pair of drum sticks in one hand and in the other was the biggest, coldest, most freshly squeezed glass of orange juice ever (no pulp).

    "Suck it down", said Shelly.

Whoever came up with the idea of assembling this rhythm section, for Art's release, should receive some sort of an award.

    5 out of 5 stars Lutherans Swing!.......2002-10-25

The previous reviewer says it all about this album--its surprising combination of competence and freshness despite the alto saxophonist's 15-year-hiatus not only from the recording studio but from playing (though between Alcatraz and Synanon, Art did briefly try to "catch on" by playing tenor saxophone in the Coltrane style). It's especially good to get the album back after losing my LP version 15 years ago. Originally, it was an "impulse purchase" on my part, motivated by the cover photo of Art wearing a cut-off shirt with a "Texas Lutheran" insignia (a college campus I've visited). I've never figured out the direct connection between Art and the small church-affiliated college. But on this album Pepper re-traces Martin Luther's own "Lost Soul" and its journey from the valley of the shadow of death to the salvation awaiting the one whose faith is strong.

5 out of 5 stars Still alive !.......2000-09-09

Living Legend. A perfectly chosen title for this 1975 recording of Art Pepper, for a legend he most certainly was, though some would have doubted that he was even alive at the time. Years spent in various prisons (San Quentin the most notorious among them) and at Synanon trying to get his life back in order had kept him well away from the limelight. His last albums as a leader were released way back in 1960, and Art Pepper seemed to have vanished off the bandstand for good, due to his "personal problems", as drug-problems were usually referred to in those days. Record producer Lester Koenig, who had been Pepper's staunchest supporter and backer throughout the 1950's, brought Pepper's career back to life by having him record a comeback album for his 'Contemporary' label. Backed by a brilliant rhythm section of Hampton Hawes (piano), Charlie Haden (bass) and Shelly Manne (drums), Art Pepper's alto is the true star of this brilliant album. The emotion he puts into tunes like "Here's that rainy day", "Ophelia" and especially the unforgettable "Lost Life" is unique and heart-wrenching in all its beauty. Having squandered so many years behind bars and inside the Synanon institute, Pepper played as if every note could be his last, and he gave his all to convey his emotions through his horn while he still had the chance. The track "Lost Life" must rank among one of the most beautiful, most personal and most unforgettable of all jazz-recordings. However much he made a mess of his personal life (read his painfully honest autobiography "Straight Life"), in his music Pepper seemed determined to put all the beauty and love he had so sorely lacked during most of his childhood and during his drug-related lock-ups. The rhythm section almost seem afraid to interfere in what was so obviously a cry straight from the heart, so they carefully choose every accompanying note, leaving the scene clear for Pepper's alto to tell its sad, but beautiful story of a life that had been wasted, were it not for Pepper's exquisite taste and uniquely enchanting sound, which temporarily managed to chase away his demons, as if nothing had ever happened.

    5 out of 5 stars a great comeback album!.......1998-06-24

This was his first album after many years in prison. He sounds strong and anxious to get started. A powerhouse rhythm section adds to the enjoyment. "Lost Life" will break your heart.

5 out of 5 stars Must have in every jazz collection.......2007-01-10

Linda Hopkins is one of a few female vocalists singing today that represent an era of jazz and blues. This album is a classic. She adds her own lyrics to another one-of-a-kind female vocalist/songwriter Jeannie Cheatham's "Meet Me With Your Black Drawers On" that adds her flavor to this classic. I would love to see Cheatham and Hopkins do an cd together. This is a live recording with a decent trio. Linda is an American treasure and the album reflects her style.

I've had the pleasure of seeing Mickey Champion live several times in a small Santa Monica bar called Harvelle's (singing weekly as of fall 2002). She's got a gorgeous voice which projects magnificently and more personality than all the other singers I've seen live put together. It comes over on this CD as well which I highly recommend for blues music to listen or dance to.

I recently had the pleasure of "discovering" Mickey Champion at Babe and Rickys. I was amazed when I heard her "live" and I became a fan after listening to this cd. Every cut is excellent. I especially enjoy Gambler's Blues. Buy this cd. If you enjoy the blues, you will not be disappointed.

          Amazon.com's Best of 2000

This disc was recorded in Bernie Strassberg's living room with a reel-to-reel, and Lonnie Johnson's elegant vocal tone and masterful command of soul-soaked roots music transform the lo-fi surroundings into a mainline of unfiltered beauty. As children trample by amid slamming doors and random pieces of conversation, Johnson's voice calmly weaves together threads of rhythm and blues that would put most 48-track studio recordings to shame. --Matthew Cooke

Forty years after beginning a remarkable recording career spanning multiple generations and genres, New Orleans-born blues and jazz guitar virtuoso Lonnie Johnson sat in a friend's living room in Queens, New York, with an acoustic guitar and a reel-to-reel recorder. The songs he performed that night make up this enchanting set of classics that adds yet another dimension to the great musician's legacy. Here, we find Johnson at age 66, his plaintive voice and guitar in stunning form, mining a 20th-century musical landscape for folksy treasures as diverse as Bessie Smith's "Back Water Blues," Duke Ellington's "Solitude," Hoagy Carmichael's "Rockin' Chair," and Kurt Weill's "September Song," with "Danny Boy" and "Careless Love" also among the surprises. Although it was recorded in 1965 on crude equipment, it's easy to see from this essential CD why Lonnie Johnson deeply affected so many American musical immortals, from Robert Johnson, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Elvis to Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. --Alan Greenberg

5 out of 5 stars So simple, so pure..........2005-03-22

I never meant to get this CD. Actually, I never heard of it. a few weeks ago I ordered a few CD's somewhere and when I got them, they added this CD as a bonus. I listened to it once, and then I just couldn't stop. I never got so amazed from such a simple thing. You can hear th 66 year-old Lonnie, ssitting at a friend's house with an acoustic guitar, just spilling his heart out. It doesn't matter that the recording is not in the best quality, it even adds to the feeling. His voice is so bittersweet, it brings me tears to listen to him. such a perfect combination of voice and his unique guitar playing... another thing is that you can really tell it was recorded at a home surrounding: kids running around, talking to "daddy"... all of the atmosphere make it one of the best, honest and heartful recordings I ever heard.

          5 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Statement From A Masterful Performer.......2005-01-14

Lonnie Johnson's "The Unsung Blues Legend: The Living Room Sessions," is a remarkable monument to a man whose lengthy musical career spanned over six decades and reached stellar heights and very low points, such as when he was reduced to working as a custodian. The setting is informal with a warm, laid-back ambiance that you wish would never end. Johnson gently flows from one classic song to another, all the while making you feel as though you are right there in the same living room sitting in a comfortable chair and enjoying the beautiful sounds. The faint sounds of talking children in the background makes this recording all the more real, as if it could have been made in your own home or in that of a friend. By the time Johnson finishes this set, you do feel as though you have made a good friend, for whom you feel some pity for because he was never given the recognition such an outstanding artist is worthy of. Pick up a copy of this CD, you'll be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Great music but the Folkways recordings of same have more.......2004-03-24

These records are unique. Johnson plays all of these selections solo on an a very acoustic sounding electric guitar and sings them all. Now and then he talks about the songs. This is a master who had been playing and singing for 40 years. Yet, there is so much personal sentimental and feeling here, so much expression in the guitar playing. You feel like you know the man after you hear this. You feel like you really know these songs anew after you hear this album. This is a good album for a thoughtful evening with a good glass of wine, a good friend, and an open mind!

5 out of 5 stars Lonnie did it all, and it all came straight from his soul!.......2000-07-24

I am amazed that Lonnie Johnson does not receive more attention in the guitar magazines and history books. He was a hero to Robert Johnson and B. B. King. The scope of what he did over a 50 plus year career included outstanding down & dirty blues (which in my opinion far outshine Robert Johnson) to early electric blues, to jump blues, to suave sentimental jazzy blues. On top of this, when you listen to him, you can tell this music comes from some very deep place within the man. I REALLY WISH THERE WAS MORE INFORMATION AVAILABLE ABOUT HIS LIFE.

These recordings have not been previously issued. They were recorded in the home of a guy named Bernie Strassberg in 1965. The sound is great, with a very intimate, comfortable feel. You can hear flashes of Lonnie's brilliance on the guitar. I only wish I could have heard him play with Duke Ellington's band in 1961 or seen him with Buddy Guy in 1970.

Thanks Bernie! You've done us all a great favor. Buy this disk now.
