3 out of 5 stars Maysa Deserves Live Musicians.......2007-07-15

I have been a fan of Maysa's voice for many years. Going back to her period with Incognito, I always have enjoyed the sounds produced by her vocal cords. Given the nature of this recording, I looked forward to its release for many months. I was so certain it would be a major success that I order four copies -- one for myself and the remaining ones as gifts -- well in advance of its release. Upon receipt, I listened to it several times. As forecast, I was not disappointed by the vocals. I was, however, disappointed by the synthesizer -- the only "instrument" -- that supported this superior vocalist. Like most vocalists, Maysa needs, and deserves, the support of acoustic instruments. The synthesizer left many voids. This would be a superior recording with horns, drums, bass, guitar, and an occasion string instrument. The absences rendered this an average or below average recording. Maysa has earned the right to be supported by live musicians in the studio. Further compromises of this nayture will destroy her brand. I hope she will heed this message.

2 out of 5 stars Disapointed, Maysa's KARAOKE CD.......2007-07-15

I love maysa's voice and music which had been pleased my ear for years. But this is under average of her music.
Her music on those Top 10 classic songs are only KARAOKE quality ( Record company wants Easy-money )
Not good back music-a bad arragement with cheap sound.
I don't think anybody would get impressed by her singing of "FEEL THE FIRE",After people listen Stephanie Mill's version & Teddy's or Peabo Bryson's version (original).
I want Maysa would go back what she used to do

5 out of 5 stars I love Maysa's soothing, sultry voice!.......2007-07-06

She tackles the classic songs in her own special way. This is a CD that you can put on repeat and not get tired of hearing her sing. It is so sad that she has not had the "commercial success" in the US.

4 out of 5 stars On Fire!!.......2007-07-03

As a long time fan of Maysa, I am always surprised at the sheer beauty of her voice. She knows how to take any song and make it her own. I especially liked the songs she chose to cover. However, I think its time for her to grace us with some of her original material.

5 out of 5 stars I'm In Love with Feel The Fire!.......2007-06-12

I'm a little over the current cover cd's. Feel the Fire to me is the best so far. Maysa's warm smooth vocals, 70's retro soul you can't go wrong. I wish for more tracks, but I guess I'll have to wait for Maysa's next real release for that. I'm given five stars just for her voice. I'm waiting to hear the Live cd....

4 out of 5 stars Really nice voice.......2007-05-30

I just ran across Maysa here on Amazon and listened to the samples. The CD is very very nice, she has a beautiful voice and I love the music. Mellow and quiet.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Classic Soul.......2007-04-27

This is one of 2 in my life I've ever gladly downloaded. Maysa did justice to the remakes and she is a truly underestimated goddess in music. Keep doin' your thang, Maysa.

5 out of 5 stars Maysa's Sweet Soul Classic.......2007-02-26

Balto., MD native and former Stevie Wonder back up singer Maysa Leak does it again. First of all, this is a cover album. Perhaps this sets the stage for uneasiness, but after listening, there is no room for disappointment. Maysa is an authentic artist. Her sweet soulful silky sound is clearly her own. And for sure, it is her sweet silky sound that elevates these 10 soul classics to another level. The level of smooth and jazzy. Of course I am a believer in originality, and truly there is nothing like the real classic itself. However, Maysa's interpretation of these songs is not to be ignored. Give a listen to "Come Go With Me" and "Love Won't Let Me Wait". These are smokin' treatments!! This cd reflects some of what she listened to while growing up in the 70s. Apparently she listened well. She does a very good job here. I appreciate the musical change. Soft/mellow/jazzy.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-02-24

I love Maysa, but I was disappointed to hear her cover so many other people's songs. One of the many attributes I love about her is her originality and I missed that on this album.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Music.......2007-02-13

Maysa does great with this album and you must buy it. Her voice will get into your head and put you into a sweet mood.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Talent On The Rise.......2006-06-19

With a hypnotic mixture of r&b and smooth jazz.Singer, songwriter Ms.Maysa Leak comes at you and just takes you away with a secial style all her own.Her voice is wonderful and smooth and on top of that she's beautiful. This lady is loaded with talent. And she seems to have great musical taste.Something that seems to be lacking in some other young female singers of this generation.I'm very much impress with this album and I listen to it a lot. With songs like Unexpectedly,Hypnotic Love,One More Chance,Smooth Sailing and Where Do You Go?.Is what makes this album such a standout. And I plan on buying a lot more Maysa albums in the future.

4 out of 5 stars Sultry, smoky r & b/soul over smooth jazz grooves and feel good lyrics.......2006-04-16

Since this is my first Maysa album I read many of the other listener's glowing reviews first so that I may offer something different to the collection of opinions. Most strikingly Maysa's voice resembles the legendary Roberta Flack, as well as Anita Baker, and Lalah Hathaway. Track 5 (Where Do You Go?) sounds like a song that could have been on a Julie Dexter album, and if you aren't familiar with her, she is another fine jazz vocalist with a more Diana Ross range rather than the alto of Maysa. You will be reminded of Luther Vandross on track 7 and
10 (All day Long and One More Chance)not only in the instrumental track but in Maysa's vocal phrasing. The latter half of the album swings very much toward contemporary r & b and many of the background tracks sound like samples and loops you may have heard from some other artist on some other album. Overall many of the songs sound similar in arrangement and theme, but Maysa fans, don't be furious, if it wasn't for her gloriously rich vocals, I would not have listened so many times to rate this album one star below the highest rating. Regardless, you will find this a good album and love many of the songs, without a doubt!

3 out of 5 stars (3.5 stars) Maysa Sails On With Latest Release!.......2005-09-07

Maysa has been one of those artist who has been constantly looked over when you go to the store and look in the music racks. Yes, she's the artist who you'd typically say "I've never heard of her" and yet you probably have heard her. She was once the female vocalist in the jazz fusion group Incognito. She was the voice behind songs like "Deep Waters" and "Still A Friend Of Mine" for all you jazz listeners out there. She has had four solo albums, the first three being the self-titled album Maysa, All My Life, and Out Of The Blue respectively. Now she returns with another jazz-influenced album entitled Smooth Sailing.

The first single from the album is the title track "Smooth Sailing," a good representation of what the rest of the album sounds like. "Scat World" features her alongside another relatively unknown songstress named Ledisi. The best song on the disc hands down is "All Day Long" with solid background singers and top notch production that few others are able to manage to get for their own songs. This same style is continued on the song "Where Have You Been" and "One More Chance." But there is some fun elements as well on songs like "So Very Hot" and "Hypnotic."

Although not her best work, Maysa still proves that she is the best at what she does. But even though her songs sound overtly R&B, she is usually placed in the genre that most appreciates her....Smooth Jazz. Despite the flip-flopping of categories, Maysa is hands down a wonderful vocalist and Smooth Sailing is a voyage that you can still enjoy without getting seasick.

5 out of 5 stars Can't get any better than this. CAUTION: Ear orgasm involved........2005-08-30

I fell in love with Maysa's voice when she sang with Incognito in the early to mid 90's. I still cant get over songs like "Deep Waters" and their version of "Don't you worry 'bout a thing"
Ever since Maysa has launched her solo career, I've been watching it like a hawk because her voice and the music production on her albums have been nothing short of perfection. This album is by no means any different. In fact, I believe its her tightest album to date. I didnt think that was possible after hearing songs like "Out of the blue", "Head to the sky" and one of my personal favorites "Everything", on her last album. However there is something that is so mature and mysterious about this album. She is constantly redefining herself while staying true to her unique style of music. She walks the fine line of r&b and jazz to perfection. Although every song on this album is good, Standouts include "Smooth sailing", "Soul Child", The ear orgasmic "Where do you go?", The window down, sunroof open, driving down the interstate jam "So very hot", and the r&b crossover "Where have you been?"
As long as Maysa makes music, I will be buying it. I hope that this isnt her last project. Also, for all you Maysa fans who like good music [...] The album is called "Seasons of life".

Maysa Leak's first album, in 1995, had an incredible--we're not kidding here--eight producers involved. It's just as amazing that executives at her former record company are still scratching their heads over why the most dominant voice out of England's late 1980s-early 1990s acid-jazz/funk didn't make it as a solo act. Hints can be found in the title of her long-awaited follow-up, for all the people involved here have been with Maysa throughout her professional life. American-born, Maysa became a star as lead singer of the band Incognito, and she now sounds more comfortable than ever, in part because Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick took the production reins and held them tight. Maunick, the brainchild and leader of Incognito, is in a much better position to make Maysa's jazzy--yet soulful and funky--voice stand out on these 14 tracks, which have more hooks than Canadian fishermen in the North Atlantic. The record is a lot less jazzy than the usual Incognito album, which should make dance-music and urban-pop fans very happy. A reworking of Gil Scott-Heron's "The Bottle," based on the poet's live version with the African "guan-guanco" rhythms, is sure to be played heavily on radio and in clubs, as will the Sade-sounding "Got to Be Strong" and the exquisite title track. Incognito fans should rush right to "Hooked on Your Love," "Compliments," and "Closure." They're among the last five tracks, where the more adventurous horn charts and drum-and-bass style flourish. --Mark Ruffin

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Earthy, Urban and Soulful.......2005-10-08

I am enjoying this CD. The first cut puts you in the mind of Sade, however it is Maysa in all her glory. What a magnificent talent!

5 out of 5 stars Effortlessly Elegant........2004-04-25

I've always been a fan of Incognito and its lead singer, Baltimore's own Maysa Leak. Her solo debut was a fine CD, but her 2000 effort, "All My Life" raises the bar even higher. It's such a shame that she isn't getting more attention, because she's certainly one of the finest soul singers around. Here, the disc seamlessly blends jazz, r&b, and soulful house, all of which are set to Maysa's sultry voice which exudes an effortless grace. Those who are familiar with Incognito's work will find plenty to savor here. From the positive vibe of the opener, "Got to Be Strong," I was hooked. The album is surprisingly consistent, with no filler tracks or lackluster tunes. In addition to "Got to Be Strong," my favorites are the jazzed-up "Mirrors," the anti-drinking message of "The Bottle," "Earth Child," and the flat out beautiful title track. The production has a stern ear for detail, capturing the right balance of sax, percussion, guitars, and bass. There are other soul records that may sell more, but you'll find few that are as exceptionally classy as "All My Life." Grade: A-.

5 out of 5 stars Captivating, Jazzy, Soulful, Maysa's awesome!.......2003-10-15

Wow, This CD is so awesome! I have Maysa's debut album as well as this one (her second) and I absolutely love them both.
This album "all my life" is so nice to listen to. It has some jazzy upbeat songs as well as some nice relaxing tunes.
"The Bottle" is very dancy and upbeat. There's a remix of it at the end of the album. My personal favorites are "People Mirrors," "Blue Light," "Listen With Your Heart," "Hooked On Your Love," and "Take My Hand" which are all beautiful songs!
After I first got this album I could not stop listening to it!
I still play it to this day non-stop. It's just so good.
Other great songs are "Pressure" and "All My Life"
If you don't already own this album, then go ahead and make it your next buy! you won't regret it, as this album is great from start to finish! Just listen to some samples and see for yourself!

let's just get this out of the way now. maysa? i'm on your team babes, but this cd just hasn't done it for me. i got your 1st cd & was hooked. i waited for the next & was floored! not in a good way! the cd jacket was so drab & tired, just like damn near every song inside the case. i let it sit on my shelf & decided to give it a listen again. still i didn't feel it. it's in my car right now & i still can't get through it all. i'm still on your team though. i have your latest & i play it 2 death. over & over. cd's 1 & 3 are both must haves. but this 1 stinks!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!.......2002-07-11

You want to get balladized, get this cd. Ms. Maysa, of my hometown Baltimore, is spectacular. She has the voice of smooth silky silk. When she does her opera before the song "ALl My Life", it puts me in a freezy. Chills up and down my spines. Maysa's sefftitled cd and this is a must get. I catch all her concerts in the surrounding area of the Washington, DC and Maryland areas. She has never left me regret. I leave in awe wanting more. Her smooth tribute to Sade is a knock-out. Want to chill with your love one, the one who has your heart, do so but be sure to put Maysa cds on the carousel and the night is yours. Love you Maysa!!

Out of the Blue proves not only can Maysa be taken out of Incognito, but that Incognito can be taken out of Maysa. Her sterling voice may always be associated with the group, but the most dominant of all of Incognito's vocalists finally sheds the aura of the London-based band with her third album. This is a deeply personal, carefully constructed, made-in-America stew of sweet neo-soul and urban funk, with a dash of acid jazz, all powered by the deep-throated singer from Baltimore. Fans of the Cogs, as Maysa calls them, will dig the opener, "Friendly Pressure," written by fellow Incognito vocalist Jhelisa Anderson; "Out of the Blue," where she actually quotes "Deep Water," the Incognito song that made her famous; and Sly Stone's '70s anthem, "Family Affair," which was produced by a rabid Japanese Incognito fan. On the other tracks, she exerts her own style. There are sweet harmonies on stirring ballads, her unique scatting style on upbeat boilers, and even a bit of Mary J. Blige-influenced drama on "Mr. So Damn Fine." The bomb is absolutely dropped on the Brazilian smoker "Simple Life," costarring Will Downing and guitarist Peter White. --Mark Ruffin

Album Description

Highlights include the bonus track 'Family Affair' along with the subtle swing of the title track, a hypnotic rendition of the international hit 'Friendly Pressure' (Featuring Guitarist Ronny Jordan), the sweet samba groove of 'Simple Life' (With vocalist Will Downing and smooth jazz guitarist Peter White), a seductive cover of the Earth Wind and Fire classic 'Head To The Sky' & the sexy ballad 'Right Here, Right Now.' 2002.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best.......2005-06-24

This is truly an inspirational CD that anyone can easily relate to. Anytime I play the tracks from this CD, it sounds fresh and new and I never get tired of hearing them. If you don't know who it is singing, you can't help but listen to the message in the words. I still recommend this CD as one of the favorites for female vocalist. This CD tells story after story from one track to the other. Everyone I have recommened this CD to has come up with the same opinion, "Truly a work of art".

5 out of 5 stars No Incognito....No Problem!.......2005-04-18

Maysa delivered a knock out punch with this here CD! Her first venture without the backing of Incognito and she not only nailed it shut, she buried it deep, dug it up and flung it out the ballpark! That's how serious it is! Her version of EWF's "Head to the sky" is enough to make one run and buy this CD, yet if you're still unsure, her duet with Will Downing on the brassy, latin tinged tune "Simply Life" is enough to make you leap before looking! She sang "Deep Water" for Incognito, but she really went into the deep end on this project! Well Done!

5 out of 5 stars "Don't want to get wet until the rain begins".......2005-04-14

Maysa's "Out of the Blue" album is simply put one those albums when you start it you won't pull until it is over. Outstanding.
To all fans of singers like Sade, Anita Baker, here is another singer you will love. And let Maysa's deep husky voice send you into her world effortlessly, like she does to me everytime I listen to her. Let me tell you my five favorites, off of "Out of the Blue". 1)Friendly Pressure: The opening track alone is worth five stars. After listening to this song you will hooked, lined and sunk into Maysa. Trust me. 2) Simple Life: The hypnotic guitar playing on this song along with her perfect singing is simply breathtaking. 3)Blue Horizon: Paul Hardcastle fans should love this song and since I am, I do. 4)Tailor Made Love: Just a great sample of Maysa's vocal powers.
5)Family Affair: With her great remake of the classic Sly and the Family Stone classic she cements her greatness, by putting a modern spin to the song. Well all I can say is expect to be blown away by Maysa. And, radio stations will you please play this great artist who deserves your attention. I mean if you have time to play a Maysa wannabe like Kelly Clarkson you certainly can play the real thing.

5 out of 5 stars What a shame ..........2004-12-27

I've been a fan of Maysa since the Incognito days, but as I've come to know her as a solo artist it's undeniable that this woman is one of the premier artists' of our time. Her Vocal Performance is especially MAJOR on "Out of the Blue" and it's a shame she doesn't get as much recognition as she deserves amidst a landscape of too many half-talents. Get to know her ... you won't be dissappointed.

5 out of 5 stars OH, THIS CD IS GREAT!!!! You can listen to it over and over.......2004-12-23

I love music, but DANG! The music is GREAT, the Voice! What a voice. I have played Blue Horizon like 100 times, and I never get tired of it. Not many song can do that, but her voice, and the music makes this CD one of best. Pick it up, everyone that I have told to buy this CD, has been VERY Happy with it! Maysa is all that, to me this is one of her best cd's. It will make want to get every CD she is on, including Incognitos stuff!

5 out of 5 stars worth getting for "Can We Change the World?" and "J.F.S" alone.......2007-05-14

I bought this album, "MAYSA," because I was interested in hearing some of this singer's work outside of her roots with the group of musicians known as Incognito, whom I have heard are not from the United States of America. Even though I own about 40 or 50 albums altogether, I probably need to spend a little more time with "MAYSA" than I have been, but so far, it has won me over with "Can We Change the World," which I had heard on an audio cassette that a friend of the family had given to me long before I purchased "MAYSA." Then, there's "Let it Go" which is fun to listen to, especially near dusk while taking a walk or going for a ride. Immediately preceding that track, however, is the absolute best. I mean, we're talking ear-candy... a masterpiece and it alone almost makes me want to give the whole album some extra credit. "MAYSA" is the first of Maysa Leak's individual albums that I have purchased and listened to, and it certainly will not be the last.

5 out of 5 stars Maysa Leak.......2007-05-12

I love Maysa Leak. She has a voice like no other and her 1st solo cd is remarkable.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-02-08

I just recently found out about Masya. I brought her Smooth Sailing cd first and I loved it. So that got me wondering about
her other CD's. First I purchase Out of the Blue. I liked it o.k.
but not like her lastest one. Then I toke a chance on Masya and it was instant love. I love it and play it every day. If you can
get your hands on this CD buy it you want be sorry

5 out of 5 stars HER BEST SOLO WORK.......2004-02-15

I Love this Lady's work well enough to have bought all 3 of her solo albums however, Her first is her best and I'm disappointed with both ALL MY LIFE & OUT OF THE BLUE. This album is a definite must have and while there are some good tracks on the other 2 CD's none carry the same "swing" as all the tracks on the her self titled debut CD....in fact this Cd is all you need as it showcases Maysa at her best.

3 out of 5 stars Sleepy Smooth Jazz.......2005-11-16

This is just another collection of very boring "smooth jazz" music. The only reason I gave it three stars is because of "So Not So", which features Randy Brecker on trumpet. This is probably how Miles Davis would do "Blue In Green" if he were alive today, muted trumpet and all.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars One of her best!.......2003-03-05

Brazilian vocalist Maysa Matarosso was considered one of the best bossa nova singers of the early 1960s, although I think some of her "classic" work can be a little hard to wade through at times. Still, even I gotta admit that this album is a winner. I mean, her hair looks terrible, but that has nothing to do with the music inside, which is a dense, challenging mix of modern jazz styles. The opening track offers a cool, dark sound, reminiscent of Miles Davis's pre-fusion atonalities; then the band moves on to tightly crafted big band-ish material, inspired perhaps by the likes of Stan Kenton and other classical-influenced jazz modernists. Maysa's vocals are notably stronger and more concise than on her early work... She even busts out with some French chanson that sounds just like the real thing! Bossa-jazzers Erlon Chaves and Chico de Moraes are the principal arrangers, and their hands are steady and sure... So far this is the best of Maysa's early albums that I've heard... definitely worth checking out!
