Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars American Rock & Roll Vol 7.......2007-04-07

What a wonderful collection of early rock & roll!! I am pleased with the quality and condition of the CD. It was delivered on time as promised

4 out of 5 stars The Golden Age of American Rock & Roll, Vol. 7.......2007-01-04

It was an okay compilation of oldies. I actually purchased it because of one song on it I had not been able to find on CDs' before hand. Some excellent music to dance to.

5 out of 5 stars It is not done better than this.......2005-01-15

I am a enthousiastic collector, and have almost all the Time Life rock n roll stuff, as well as Eric Records cds of this era. Although they are essential to any 50s 60s collection, nothing can top ACE series.
I could comment like this on all the 50s remasters of this fabulous record label, not only their other editions, but especially the Golden Age of American Rock n roll. I can not add anything to the positive reviews than simply summing up my personal view:
30 tracks per cd! (Time life is also excellent, but you get 15 per cd!)
excellent booklets with background info (not surpassed by any label).
not the same old songs over again, but many rare and still excellent tracks!
last but not least amazing sound quality.
So although you might have some songs there on other collections, it is for above mentioned points alone worth it to always have an ACE copy as well.

5 out of 5 stars Ace scores again.......2001-03-10

Ace triumphs with another exceptional issue in their Golden Age of American Rock and Roll series. Here are more hard-to-find gems of late 50s and early 60s American top-100 singles. As usual, Ace has dug up the best tape sources for these tunes and the sound quality is exceptional for the vintage of these recordings. Tracks 18 and 25 appear in stereo with the remainder in mono. A 24-page booklet with pics, promo shots and lots of backround on the included tracks accompanies the CD. Ace continues to prove that they're on top when it comes to providing reissues/compilations of early American rock and roll.

4 out of 5 stars Great Music At A Great Price.......2000-07-26

Another eclectic--but terrific--collection of soul/pop/doo-wop/rockabilly that made up the pre-British Invasion (1954-1963) American rock and roll landscape. Like the previous volumes, ACE places the emphasis on the rare and obscure. In fact, many of these songs won't be found even in the most avid collector's music library. Of course there are the big hits like Ernie K-Doe's chart-topping "Mother-In-Law," the Monotones' doo-wop classic "Book of Love," Jimmy Clanton's lovely "Just a Dream" and the Miracles' first Motown hit "Shop Around."

But what sets this series apart from the rest, is its ability to rescue forgotten gems from obscurity. You get the Viscounts' haunting instrumental "Harlem Nocturne," which only made it to No. 52 in 1959. [It would be rereleased in 1966 and make the Top 40.] There's the doo-wop harmonies of the Five Keys' minor hit "Ling, Ting, Tong" and the Flares' "Foot Stomping, Part 1." Ritchie Valens' charged "Come On, Let's Go," which barely missed the Top 40 at No. 42. John Lennon cut his teeth on Barret Strong's "Money." Lennon also claims he used the riff from Bobby Parker's "Watch Your Step" for "Day Tripper."

And the 20-page booklet is full of photos and trivia on each of the artists and songs. Did you know that Chuck Willis's 1957 hit "C.C. Rider" was a 1925 hit for Ma Rainey as "See See Rider Blues"? "Sea Cruise" was recorded by Huey "Piano" Smith and the Clowns and then Smith's vocal was replaced with Frankie Ford's and it sold 30 million copies worldwide.

This is the most consistently solid early rock and roll series available and ACE continues to find strong material for each new volume. Don't be put off by your unfamiliarity with some of these tracks. In many cases I've found myself enjoying them just as much, if not more than the big hits. And where most labels would make this a two-disc set and charge you double the price, this is an amazing bargain. My advice? Buy this while you still can. RECOMMENDED

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Don't buy this for Lanza!.......2002-02-25

Oh dear. Whoever compiled this collection was not paying much attention to the Mario Lanza selections! Several of them feature Lanza at his worst (Funiculi' Funicula', Santa Lucia Luntana, With A Song In My Heart), and Be My Love excepted, the tenor recorded superior versions of all of them on other occasions.

Jan Peerce and Jussi Bjoerling fare much better, with both tenors sounding at the peak of their form. Ironically, several of their selections are more closely associated with Lanza (Vesti La Giubba, Granada and Che Gelida Manina), and one can only wonder at the reasoning behind these choices.

Buy this if you're a fan of Peerce or Bjoerling; admirers of Lanza should look elsewhere for his best recordings.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT LISTEN!.......2000-06-25

This CD is tremendous, giving us a true feeling of the "three" tenors, when there were a lot more than that! It is undeniable that Bjoerling stands out as the best, and will only make you want more. But the Lanza trademarks are here too.

Following in the footsteps of two earlier Doo Wop Boxes--the first of which sold enough to earn a gold record--comes a third set of four CDs dedicated to the street-corner form. Discs one and two collect hits and near-misses that didn't make the cut for the previous volumes. The fact that many of these recordings--including the Cadets' whacked-out "Stranded in the Jungle," the Charts' barely less goofball "Zoop," the Jaguars' lovely nod to Sinatra on "The Way You Look Tonight," and Lee Andrews and the Hearts' gorgeous "Try the Impossible"--stand up to the selections on volumes one and two makes a grand case for the music's depth. (As for the odd embarrassing whitewash such as the 3 Friends' "Blanche," well, someone likes it.)

An interesting twist finds the third disc filled with favorites chosen by the likes of Keith Richards, George Carlin, and Art and Aaron Neville, while the final CD collects two dozen modern tracks that often stretch the boundaries of tribute. Still, it's fitting that the unstoppable a cappella group the Persuasions' 1977 "Looking for an Echo" ends the box. Along with its predecessors, Doo Wop Box III affirms that this blissful strain of American music indeed resonates 50 years after its development. --Rickey Wright

2 out of 5 stars The Weakest Link In The Chain.......2004-11-01

Doo Wop Box #3 has its moments - there are many really good tunes on it - but it falls far short of the first two sets, which were excellent. Disc 3 contains a couple of tunes that were featured in the first 2 sets but otherwise has some really scarce tunes. Disc 4 in this set is a complete waste of time and is suitable for use as a frisbee or coaster. Rhino really dropped the ball with this set. Buy the other two sets before investing in this.

3 out of 5 stars The Weakest Link Of The Three.......2004-10-16

This set was a disappointment after the first two. I just didn't think that the set was put together that well. Many of the songs were picked by opinions that Doo Wop "experts" said needed to be in a box. It has its moments, but overall is not as strong as the first two. Make sure you get them before this one. This is definately a set to finish the collection from Rhino. Once again, the sound is great, as Rhino products are always top sounding (at least the ones I own).

5 out of 5 stars Better than its current rating indicates.......2003-05-15

...While it's true that "The Doo Wop Box III" is not quite as consistent as "Box I" and "Box II," it's still an amazing compilation. I, for one, am glad that Rhino decided to compile a disc of modern doo-wop to show that the form isn't just a dead relic of the distant past. Doo-wop fans who don't know about The Persuasions are missing out on some great music. They certainly deserve to be included in a set like this. (Though I wouldn't necessarily have picked "Looking For an Echo" to represent them.) Doo-wop doesn't HAVE to come from the 1950s or 60s to be "pure." Just listen to the Neville Brothers' version of "We Belong Together." You're telling me that's not gorgeous, glorious music? Get real!

My only quibble with this set is that it includes a handful of tracks I already owned from the previous DWB sets. But that's such a minor detail that it hardly seems to matter. Not when it's offset by the inclusion of such mindbending tracks as "Newly Wed" by the Orchids -- which I never would have found had it not been for this set.

      4 out of 5 stars perfect? No....still great? Yes.......2003-03-24

Most people will compare this with the fabulous box sets I and II, unfortunately. This set doesn't have quite the sparkle of the first two, but is still great. I think Rhino should be complimented, but derided, for trying something a little different in this third offering. Regarding Disc 3 (entertainment figures' picks), the intriguing liner notes put their choices into good perspective. It seems Disc 4 ("modern" doo wop) offends a lot of people, but I think it's a fun disc. It clearly shows doo wop's pervasive influence on pop music. And it's obvious the modern groups are performing with love for the genre, and not in comic parody. A solid B+ , warranting any doo wop fan's purchase.

      3 out of 5 stars 3 Clean closets and 1 dirty trick!.......2001-12-20

I wish that I could give this collection more stars. Boxes 1 and 2 were incredible, but it sounds like Rhino is really scraping the bottom of the barrel here. Discs 1 and 2 are decent, 3 other than repeating a couple of songs available on the first 2 boxes (hello people! who is your target buyer? people who already own boxes 1 and 2 perhaps?....duh). Disc 4 was a remarkale misstep, taking Doo Wop out of the 'classic' venue and transporting it into the 'modern' age. It's nothing short of a small miracle that the majority of songs do pull it off (yes it is THAT "Whole Lotta Love" and THAT "Eye of the Tiger" in Doo Wop format). Still, for the price of this box set, getting songs that I already had owned (regardless of the star's picks) and a whole cd of 'interpretations' of Doo Wop standards was a sad affair and Rhino is a better lable than to pull this on a listener. You got me this time... if there is a Doo Wop Box 4 (and I doubt it) please don't trick me again.
