Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Marvellous!.......2005-11-26

I don't play violin, and I can't even read music, but as a classical music amateur I find this CD outstanding. Even an incompetent like myself can easily understand why Perlman is regarded as one of the greates violinists ever. This is a marvellous collection of pieces. The rendition of "Chanson Russe" by itself is, in my opinion, worth more than the price of the CD. If you listen to the audio samples on Amazon's pages and you like violin you will surely understand why I like this CD so much. I am grateful to People like Perlman, who make this world a better place to live in.

5 out of 5 stars The best violinist ever!.......2001-01-26

All I can say to this CD is it's the best I've ever heard. In this CD, Itzhak Perlman truly demonstrates his best performances of the past years. I have always been a great admirer of Perlman, but since I own this CD, it's all I've listened to for the past three months. I myself play the violin and Perlman has become an inspiration to me, almost a musical idol. For any of those violinists out there, especially young musicians, who don't feel any excitement about playing the violin, listen to this CD and I promise you, you will strive to being able to play like this man does. He is truly the best musician I've ever known.

I am attempting to consolidate my CD collection of classical music by obtaining collections, especially of chamber music, and particularly piano trios. This collection of Beethoven's piano trios more than met my expections; it is wonderful music and bueatifully played.

As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

    Amazon.com's Best of 1998

Art of the Trio Volume 3 was easily the finest rainy-day album of 1998. Moody, pensive, and hopelessly romantic, Brad Mehldau's fifth album as a leader staked out a deeply personal, strikingly handsome territory. Aided by sympathetic playing from bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jorge Rossy, Art of the Trio may not be the most exciting jazz album of the year, but it is certainly the most gorgeous. Mehldau's take on Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart's "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" is offered with as much feeling as his cover of Nick Drake's "River Man," and both show the range of his influences. --S. Duda

    Amazon.com essential recording

Pianist Brad Mehldau is best known for the moody storms that blow quiet and dark over his work. He's also no slouch when it comes to interpreting standards and penning originals marked by an eloquent, whisper-fine touch and an extra helping of emotion. On his fourth LP, Mehldau is again aided by his sympathetic and strong trio (drummer Jorge Rossy and bassist Larry Grenadier) for an outing that is delicate in its approach yet powerful in its result. Mehldau sometimes sounds like a classical musician out for a spot of jazz and to its credit, his rhythm section allows him to mine these rich, thoroughly pleasing veins. Art of the Trio, Vol. 3 will certainly evoke thoughts of Bill Evans, but covers of songs by Radiohead, Nick Drake, Rodgers, and Hart alongside five strong originals stamp this as a strong album by one of our finest pianists. --S. Duda

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Jazz that sounds like an acedemic exercise........2007-01-09

I am so glad that I purchased this Brad Maldau album first. After seeing all these rave reviews for this album, with comments that tell me this is his trio at its strongest, I know that Mehldau is not for me. I will give him one star for his strong fundementals, but that is all I have good to say. Where is the heart, where is the fire. Some people say "you don'nt understand, it is supposed to sound cold and haunting"; to this I say, look at Bill Evans. Even at Evan's most sparse and meditative, he always had that subdued passion; that is just not there with Mehldau. Even Mehldau's syncopations seem forced and predictable. His voicings are the worst--tediously homogenous. The whole thing sounds so terribly forced: as if someone made him make the album at gun-point. The hipe about Mehldau must be the fact that there are'nt many new musicians playing this kind of original material these days. I could see people going to Mehldau as an easy access into this type of jazz (or jazz in general) and not knowing any better and thinking that he is expressive. Even worse, some might think that this is what "introspective" jazz is like and become completely turned off.

His playing is so lifeless that its scary. If you need an introspective, meditative pianist, look harder or look to the past.

5 out of 5 stars Elegant, sensitive, melodic & contemporary.......2005-08-30

It's too long ago now that jazz performed by trios using acoustic piano as the center-piece was the mainstay of the genre. It's where everything started and ended. We heard how jazz could speak to us through melody AS WELL AS rhythm and be innovative at the same time. Clearly, Mehldau has inherited that tradition which some thought had suffered a pre-mature death. His debt to Bill Evans perhaps is the greatest, but Mehldau's lingering classical influence is also strongly felt- and why not? On these pieces we seem to hear Evans' voicings returning with a fresh new life. Treatment of the standards, especially "Bewitched . . ." is sensitive and lyrical, but the best selections to my taste are the original numbers, particularly "Song Song" (what a title) with harmonic structures that recall Chopin. While there are flourishes of technique, the salient feature is the clear musical statement. The bass and drums complement the piano in what becomes at once subtle and stirring. For my money, the album is Mehldau's best of his trio performances and one of the more reassuring contributions to a version of the art form that has been largely distorted if not ignored in recent years.

5 out of 5 stars Great piano trio music.......2004-03-28

As a serious fan of Bill Evans, but with little knowledge of the jazz world, I picked up the first four volumes of Mehldau's Art of the Trio recordings following a recommendation from a friend.

Volumes 1 and 3 are studio recordings; volumes 2 and 4 are live (I don't have volume 5, yet, another live volume, this one on 2 CDs). I think Mehldau is great, and I especially like the studio recordings. They are lyrical and melodic, whereas the live recordings tend more toward pyrotechnics and displays of virtuosity.

If you like the kind of music Bill Evans played, you'll certainly like volumes 1 and 3. You may prefer the live ones, especially if you're into Keith Jarrett (at least Mehldau doesn't grunt and squeal all the time). In any case, this is great music, well played and the trio has a great rapport.

    5 out of 5 stars Rave.......2004-02-24

Out of the 5 of his albums I have, this is the one I keep coming back to and the one I'd recommend to listeners who want an initiation into his world. Lyrical, passionate, and effortlessly smart.

    5 out of 5 stars exit music.......2003-11-23

By far the best moment of this record is brad's version on radiohead's "exit music".....but this is NOT an one piece album. From the first moments you really get the idea...great love for the songs and wonderful originals that will make you wanna find out more about this amazing guy and his trio. The sound is incredibly clear and I really enjoyed the drum riffs. I continously had the idea that this was a soundtrack. There are so many images. I still after all this time enjoy listening to it anticipating every hit on the piano....a must of modern jazz and together with places....his best work yet...

    5 out of 5 stars Bravo Maestro.......2007-01-03

I consider myself fortunate to have found this gem. I have always admired Casals not only for his extraordinary musicianship but also for his political courage. The story of Prades is heart warming and the music is a rare treasure. If you are a Casals fan, you might also want to hear Casals conducting Beethoven's 7th Symphony...a masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars They don't make 'em like this any more..........2006-11-28

The quality of the MUSIC here is remarkable. Many of the world's elite classical artists of the post-World War II generation are here - and the result is magic! A few of the highlights for me are the Mozart Piano Quartet No. 2 (disc 1), Beethoven Cello Sonata in A Major (disc 10), Mozart Oboe Quartet (disc 7), and many more...

You might wonder, however, how these live 50's recordings compare to recordings made in the digital era? Well... in a word, very good, very good indeed considering. Occasionally there is audience coughing (primarily just during the breaks between sections) - after all this was recorded live and you can also sometimes hear music pages turning on the stage if you listen closely. However, the sound is about as full range as you could ask for and the hiss and noise levels are very acceptable and not ever intrusive - I did note that the string instruments generally sound very good while the piano does not always fair quite as well, sometimes sounding slightly boxy - the piano is just far more difficult to record in any live setting because it is more dependent upon the room acoustics. Still, overall, the restoration is very good and trust me, you will become engaged in the MUSIC very quickly and forget all about any limitations of the recordings.

To summarize, as other reviewers have also noted, the sound quality, while not perfect by digital standards, is indeed very good - the important thing is to be assured that sound quality considerations never get in the way of the fantastic, wonderful performances. They really don't make music like this anymore.... well maybe they do sometimes, but not on thirteen discs in a row! Of course, I'm now going to purchase the second box set.

    5 out of 5 stars Treasure!.......2003-06-19

When I first heard this set, I thought to myself: now I know how Howard Carter felt when he looked for the first time into Tutankhamen's newly-excavated tomb. Maybe you know the story: As his colleagues broke the seal on the long-undiscovered tomb's final door, Carter peered into a completely dark treasure room, illuminated fitfully by the beam of his flashlight. Someone asked, "What do you see?" and he answered, "Wonderful things!" Well, this set of Casals & Friends performances from early 1950s Prades Festivals also offers an unbelievable wealth of long-unheard, wonderful things. It is impossible to overpraise this production, or find the words to adequately thank Music and Arts for issuing such extravagance in these days of penny-pinching from what we used to call the major record companies. Thirteen (!) CDs of live performances, most featuring Pablo Casals working with front-rank collaborators, and all worth hearing many times over. Highlights? Casals, Rudolf Serkin, Alfred Cortot and Eugene Istomin survey all the Beethoven cello sonatas; Casals and Menuhin treat us to all the Brahms trios; the great, lamented William Kapell plays glorious Mozart and Beethoven with a young Arthur Grumiaux; the Vegh Quartet offer marvelous Schumann ..... and many, many more. Yes, you learn that even Willy Kapell could smudge a note now and then when performing 'live.' But, overall, the mistakes are few, and the musical insights so numerous as to defy listing. Note that these performances are completely different from those other, "official" live Prades recordings issued by Sony/Columbia/CBS over the past 30 years, so if you own the Sony CDs (and you should!), rest assured that while there is some overlap of repertory, you will not be duplicating performances. (On the other hand, 9 of the 13 discs were previously issued a few years back by Music and Arts.) Sound quality is mono and variable, but never less than completely acceptable. In fact, the sound quality (as realized by ace M&A engineer Maggi Payne) is surprisingly good considering that many of the performances apparently originated in the naves of ancient stone churches, not exactly a recording engineer's dream soundstage! Packaging is spartan, but well-designed and attractive: paper envelopes contain the CDs which are held together in a space-efficient soft box. Full liner notes helpfully discuss the origins of the Prades Festivals, and provide a limited discussion of participating artists other than Casals. (The fabulous Kapell performances -- of music he recorded nowhere else -- represent the pianist's only appearance at Prades, just a month or two before his tragic death in a plane crash.) Final word: In this set you get some of the greatest performing artists of all time playing some of the greatest chamber music ever written ..... and for an unbelievably low price. Unless you are completely averse to live music-making or have no tolerance at all for fallible sound, you need to own and hear these discs, over and over again!

    5 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2007-01-19

Essential Baroque is a great collection, especially for the price. It has two CDs packd full of the best Baroque music. Like most Baroque collections, it has the best of some of the better known artists like Handel, Bach, and Vivaldi. However, unlike most other collections, it excels in adding some good pieces from lesser known artists from the period.

    4 out of 5 stars A remarkable anthology.......2005-09-08

A fine selection of pieces excerpted from the chamber ensemble, solo and opera repertory. Some recordings, though from paramount artists, are elderly; yet, performers are anyway flawless. It may be objected that a few of Vivaldi's masterpieces were disregarded.

5 out of 5 stars High-quality, marvelously varied intro to baroque music.......2003-12-13

I am buying this as the perfect gift for Russian and Chinese scientist friends. They have knowledge of classical music but perhaps not much about baroque music, which achieved special popularity in the U.S. during the 1970's and 1980's. Russians seem to have more familiarity with romantic classical music, while the more recently arrived Asian classical buffs have special affinity to the "Classical" classical period and the great 19th Century romantics. How can a baroque sampler be better than with a span of music ranging from solo harpsichord to full orchestra and chorus, and from the very familiar (Pachelbel Canon and Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah) to a trio sonata by Zelenka and the Dardanus Overture by Rameau. Not only that, but both the period instrument and living tradition baroque styles are represented by noted performers (e.g. Trevor Pinnock and Christopher Hogwood; and Henryk Szeryng, Andras Schiff, Pepe Romero, and Alicia de Larrocha, respectively). The producers were careful enough to state that the "Albinoni Adagio in g minor" was actually composed by Remo Giazotto - though in fact Giazotto did use a fragment of Albinoni. This is definitely not a supermarket special, but a box of choice musical bonbons.

4 out of 5 stars exquisite playing, but by this point in the series he's used up most of the first-rate repertoire.......2007-04-26

Of the first four volumes in Eklund's Art of the Baroque Trumpet series, I've enjoyed numbers one and three the most. Volume One is a selection of some of the greatest works of the Baroque trumpet concerto repertoire, and Volume Three a recital of duets with soprano (presenting a nearly identical program to Wynton Marsalis' Baroque Duet album, and possibly outdoing it, to my ears). Both of those albums evince an expressive elegance and flawless technical execution that are truly breathtaking, from Eklund as from all concerned; both probably deserve a place one anyone's list of the top ten greatest classical solo trumpet albums ever recorded.

(Volume 2, a recital for trumpet and organ, is timbrally monotonous and the repertoire is not particularly good, so that it gets a bit tedious. Volume 4, also trumpet concerti, is not as well done interpretively: there's a rushed quality to the readings, even an absent-mindedness.)

This, Volume 5, alternates trumpet concerti with more Baroque opera duets with soprano, so it recapitulates the best of the series. Once again the pieces are astonishingly well-played and the interpretations fresh, sensitive, and exciting. The only problem is that having gong through four hours' worth of this repertoire already, on the previous volumes, Eklund is starting to run out of first-rate repertoire to play. He's strating to get into "filler" material, in other words; not entirely, but aside from the Vivaldi Concerto for Two Trumpets and a couple of the duets with soprano, this program does not represent Baroque writing of the first order.

5 out of 5 stars Great Baroque Trumpet.......2007-02-23

Naxos is often marked down because it is a discount label, but it has turned out its share of excellent CDs, and this is one. We have a well chosen program of Baroque trumpet works by Italian composers, Vivaldi, Corelli, Ziani, Torelli, Albinoni, Galuppi, Stradella and Franceschini. The program opens with the best version I have heard of Vivaldi's grand concerto for two trumpets, and includes works for soprano and trumpet that are just wonderful. The balance between trumpet and strings is perfect. The soloist, Niklas Eklund is probably the best baroque trumpeter of the time, in my opinion better than Wynton Marsalis.
This is great baroque music, superbly played. Very highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Eklund's Trumpet Playing--It's a Natural!.......2003-09-23

Having read good things about Niklas Eklund's "Art of the Baroque Trumpet" series on Naxos, I started sampling with this Italian concert and was not disappointed. All that I had read about the beauty and purity of Eklund's tone and steadiness of his intonation are true. In fact, in contradistinction to the many good modern-instrument performances of some of the more famous works on this disc, such as the Vivaldi Concerto for Two Trumpets, Eklund and his colleagues are not in the game for sheer virtuosic sport. Hence, this concerto does not dazzle with breakneck speed as in some performances; instead, you can trace the beauty of the musical line and savor individual note production and contrapuntal interplay.

This is true as well in the arias, where Swedish singer Maria Keohane proves the perfect partner for Eklund, matching the mellowness of the natural trumpet with a darkly burnished soprano. Their collaboration highlights the finest music on the CD: Albinoni's "Vien con nuova orribil guerra"--brilliantly scored for two trumpets, two oboes, and string--and Baldassare Gallupi's "Alla tromba della Fama," with its pretty echo effects and scintillating cadenzas. Keohane even has a virtuoso turn all to herself in Vivaldi's picturesque "Agitata da due venti," which paints the scene of a boat tossed by two winds.

But there is lots of wonderfully colorful music here, including fine works from the High Baroque by Giuseppi Torelli and interesting pieces of the Mid Baroque by Zani, Stradella, and Fanceschini.

The accompaniments by the Wasa Baroque Ensemble under the direction of trumpeter Edward H. Tarr are skilled and sympathetic, and Naxos has supplied an appropriately rich, resonant recording. If the other installments in the series are as fine as this, fans of the trumpet and of the Baroque will certainly want all of them.

The Jacques Loussier Trio has recorded numerous albums applying European jazz sensibilities to classical material, following and refining the path laid down by Dave Brubeck in his crossover material of the '50s. Combining a feathery piano touch with a swinging rhythm section, Loussier reveals the affinity between the two worlds. Loussier reworks pieces by Scarlatti, Marcello, Albinoni, and three by Handel (including the lengthy Concerto in F Major for Organ) effectively, more concerned with subtly outlining harmonic contours than exhibiting the ornamentation usually associated with baroque music. This approach produces tasteful and elegant French jazz, ideal for the cozy pub or the luxury-liner lounge. Additionally, the trio deserves a warm round of applause for rendering Pachabel's over-worked Canon in D Major in a fresh manner. --Wally Shoup

    3 out of 5 stars Crossover compromise.......2007-01-04

When I first heard individual cuts from this CD I was intriqued by the synthesis of jazz and classical styles. I was also pursuaded initially by the reviews from Loussier's fans who contextualized this album as a gem within his larger body of work. Unfortunately, upon hearing the cuts all the way through, I found it to be another classic crossover compromise. Loussier is neither a good jazz pianist nor a respectable classical pianist. Combining the genres does not make him any better.

5 out of 5 stars Baroque Favourites is a fantastic CD!.......2003-07-17

Jacques Loussier has evolved only faintly in the more than 40 years he has Played Bach. This version displays a mellow style only vaguely aged. The trio's current bass player, Benoit Dunoyer De Segonzac, has a particularly tantalizing way of interpreting the Baroques. In this effort Loussier has successfully recreated the pop Pachelbel Cannon in D into another hit. I particularly like the Handel tracks at open, midway and close. (and would too purchase Loussier's Water Music & Royal Fireworks CD). And this would have to be the coolest version of Albinoni's also popular Adagio. As expected, Telarc's crew of sound engineers and hifi techno gurus have created a flawless recoding. Buy it! You won't be disappointed.

    4 out of 5 stars Make It 4 1/2 Stars.......2002-08-24

Wally Shoup has pretty much nailed it in his review. I just want to add that it is remarkable how consistent Loussier has remained over a span of more than four decades.

Last night I played "Baroque Favorites" back-to-back with a reissue LP of his 1959 debut. I was struck by the similarity of sound and style between the two. I don't know if it's intentional, but with the latest bass player Loussier has nearly recreated the sound of the original trio. At the same time, the playing is more refined and subtle. "Play Bach" was very much a hit in 1959, but "Baroque Favorites" shows the concept is still fresh and that it is possible to grow without abandoning old ideas.

At first, like reviewer Dan Cohen, I thought that Loussier's treatment of other composers wasn't as strong as his Bach work. I've changed my mind, however. There's a smoother integration of Jazz and Baroque here than in "The Bach Book." The music has fewer non-Baroque parts grafted onto it, and the bass and drum solos are shorter and fit better. I also like the selection of pieces and their sequence, and I agree with Shoup about the Pachelbel Canon in D Major. I had hesitated to buy "Favorites" because of the inclusion of this Top 40 chestnut, but fortunately Loussier gives it a fresh spin.

    5 out of 5 stars Great jazz--great music.......2002-05-28

It had been a long time since I heard Jacques Loussier. Most of it devoted to the baroque music he so beautifully paraphrases in this album. Although his Bach is great, the disscovery of his Haendel is one of the great plusses of this opus. The French baroque musicians almost forgotten today, whose work I discovered recently, sound great when played as jazz.
A trully enjoyable musical experience to anyone who likes jazz and wants to hear more baroque music.

4 out of 5 stars Not his best - but worthwhile.......2001-11-23

Loussier is at his best when he plays Bach. His rendition of Vivaldi's Four seasons is also excellent, and he is quite efficient in handling his Baroque favorites on this CD, but something is missing.
Loussier made his career on Bach because (and he said so himself) Bach makes the most Jazz-effective classical compositions. Perhaps these baroque compositions didn't go through Loussier's jazz-converter as well or as brilliantly as those others. Perhaps Loussier just coughed this CD without too much effort.
In any case - I bought it, and I am quite pleased I did (and this is the best bottom line possible...)

5 out of 5 stars The definitive second piano trio of Schubert! .......2004-08-24

Tto describe in few words : superb . All this set deserves the best and highest adjectives . Musicality technician equipment and vitality characterize all and every one of these pieces .
I had the honor of knowing Istomin in Caracas September 1979 in a piano recital .
In the first part he played a mesmerized Bergamasque suite and in the second half he played an unforgettable reading of the Schubert sonata D960.
Istomin was another pianist who greW up under the cosmic talent of Pau Casals , together with Stern that wonderful gifted musician, and nothing less than Leonard Rose who in my personal opinion has been the best american cellist in the century .
Acquire this set as soon as you can!

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievably good performance!.......2000-04-12

This combination of lovely Schubert trios and mangnificent performers must be heard to be believed. Rose, Stern, and Istomin sound as though they are a single person. I heard this recording years ago and I can still remember it as though it were yesterday. A "must hear."
