4 out of 5 stars Red, the right Jaws-breaker.......2007-06-15

Lockjaw was such a dominating player that, on recordings at least, less is frequently more. This session belongs to Red Garland, which is a good thing because Red reminds us that Jaws was a complete player, not simply a high-pitched, screaming wall-banger who was virtually assured of victory in any cutting contest featuring tough tenors. On the present session Red's playing is synonymous with the over-used expression "laid-back," or "mellow," and Jaws falls under his spell, rediscovering the low registers of his horn and filling them out with the silky and seductive tones that flustered Old Blue Eyes the night Lockjaw threatened to upstage him on Gershwin's "I've Got a Crush on You" ("Sinatra at the Sands," 1966).

My interest in Jaws was reawakened by the recent RVG reissue of Eddie Davis with Shirley Scott on "Cookbook, Vol. 1." Then I picked up "Straight Ahead," a session on which Jaws as the sole horn is backed up by the impeccable Tommy Flanagan. It's a colossal mismatch, a gross miscalculation, making Jaws sound like a sonic bully, huffing and puffing, ranting and raving til the cows come home. Jaws is a "bad" player, and when he puts on his mean and evil face, there had better be some equally thunderous support underneath him. Shirley Scott's heavy, churchy Hammond B3 provides just that, as does Oscar Peterson on "Eddie Lockjaw Davis At Montreux, '77."

On "Moodsville, Vol. 1" Jaws does the unthinkable: he lays off the top tones, staying out of the high register completely and, as a result, reminding us that he really could play ballads. Red keeps all of the tempos way, way down (probably the slowest "Blue Room" on record) and, as usual, comes up with some delightful surprises (I doubt I'm the only one who's never heard of "I Heard You Cried Last Night."

"The Red Blues," at 3 minutes 5 seconds, is absolute perfection, from the Tatumesque tenths in the left hand to the patented Red Garland widely-spaced block chords of the solo chorus. It takes genius to play this simply and effectively, to get so much out of so little. At times I wish the lesson had made a more lasting impression on Lockjaw.

[Since playing this disc a couple of more times, I've become conscious of a certain "intonation unease." In some respects, it's fascinating, because they're not necessarily "out of tune." But Red's piano definitely has not been brought up to the 440 standard on all strings, though I'm suspicious that some of the problem stems from Sam Jones' bass. I've always loved his gritty tone and considered him peerless among all "walkers" (as did Cannonball and Oscar), but I've always questioned his ear (as did Oscar).]

5 out of 5 stars Excellent slight variation .......2006-09-03

If you think that Red Garland has been accused of cocktail mannerisms by some (stupid?) critics, you find yourself thinking about the justice in this world. Very few pianists even nowadays could reach Red's perfection this is for sure. Red Garland to me is one of the greatest piano players in the history of jazz music. Period. His albums are paradigmatical Jazz played at the highest level. He simply was perfection in Jazz piano. He had swing, melody, taste, comp abilities, flashy chops, bop techniques all at his command. How could we call him a cocktail pianist?!?! In this album he proved his marvellous playing once again. The line up is the common Garland trio with Paul Chambers and Arthur Taylor responsible with Red of a long list of splendid albums recorded for Prestige during the fifties - early sixties. In this case we find Ray Barretto on the congas too. And the alchemy works. Ray simply reinforce the beat on two and four. Don't think of this album as a "latin" album as the booklet rightly explain. This is pure Jazz the bebop way. The only "pure latin" tune is the wonderful Manteca, played with congas since ever, so Ray is even more in place here. A perfect gem is the closing number, the ballad "Portrait of Jenny". But even in the other standard tunes (plus a long slow blues, Mort's Report) Ray simply reinforce the swing feel (emphasizing the second and fourth beats of the bar as I already told you) and does not ruin anything of this trio's magic. On the contrary he adds a little rythmic spice that in this album is enjoyable. It is a little detour from the common sound of this perfect, perfect, ... perfect trio.

3 out of 5 stars Jazz conga quartet?.......2001-07-19

On "Manteca", we find a traditional trio comprised of Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Arthur Taylor on drums, then add Ray Barretto on congas. Does the conga rhythm work with the trio? You'll have to be the judge of that.

With two percussionists on this CD, there are some lively solos (some extended) with Taylor and Baretto trading off on "Manteca", "Lady Be Good", and "Exactly Like You". At times, the conga does add an interesting element to these, as well as the other numbers. At other times, the conga rhythm/beat seems a bit repetitive and a little distracting. It's more a matter of personal taste than a reflection on the musicians as they are all clearly talented.

Each member of of this quartet gets ample solo time to show off their stuff. Red Garland, who served as a sideman for the Miles Davis Quintet, provides a solid performance whether he's carrying the melody or improvising during his solos and accompaniment. Paul Chambers, another Davis Quintet alumni, serves up fine performances as well and even has a bowed solo in "S'Wonderful".

Overall, it's an interesting experiment with an unusual combination that works for me on certain levels, but not on others. For those who are new to Red Garland, or expanding their RG collection, I would first suggest checking out the titles "Red Garland's Piano", "All Kinds of Weather", or "A Garland Of Red".

4 out of 5 stars great group, certainly not best record.......2007-03-07

Can't give Red Garland and John Coltrane a mere 3 stars. They're incredible musicians, together and individually. But most of their other records outshine these fine tracks. Garland's playing is typically lovely yet still interesting - flowery not in a bad way. Coltrane seems a tad uninspired - of course good but not his sharpest, even of that time. The trio w/ Coltrane is better heard on "High Pressure" and "Dig It!". Nothing beats their Miles Davis Quintet sessions of 1956, released on 4 albums, Workin', Cookin', Steamin', and Relaxin', all very highly recommended, esp. in remastered versions.

      3 out of 5 stars not trane's best.......2004-12-05

although the ballads of this cd are beautiful, his ideas are disorganized and his playing seems clutttered... if you're looking for some of Coltrane's best bebop playing, i suggest his work with the miles davis quintet/sextet

5 out of 5 stars A Great Album From A Truly Great Jazz Man.......2001-07-25

Another excellent offering from Coltrane. The Red Garland Trio backs him for this outing in the studio. It is a perfect blend of fast steady playing and smooth ballads. The outstanding playing from the RG3 keeps things tight and Coltrane provides the rest. It shows a still developing Coltrane sound that would continue to grow as he played on into the 1960s. A must for any kind of John Coltrane fan. It is yet another classic set from his days with the Prestige label. Buy it right now and play it loud! From the first listen you again realize why John Coltrane is one of the best jazz players in history. A true legend of the sax, case closed!
