1 out of 5 stars Offensive Content and Language.......2007-06-05

I love swing revival music, but my exposure to various groups has been limited. I bought this as a "buy it together" with another CD, listened to four songs, and turned it off. I won't listen to it again. The themes of the songs are sex-charged and the language vulgar. I guess I should have known by the title, "Cherry Poppin' Daddies," but I was thinking more along the lines "poppin' = jivin'" rather than it having a sexual connotation. Shows how out of the loop I am, I guess. Some people would probably love this CD, but as a Christian, I'm offended by the themes and the language. There was a low-class knock on God, too, and that was the end of the CD for me.

5 out of 5 stars Zoot Suit Riot.......2007-05-21

I postively love this cd. It so entertaining to listen to and if you are into swing dancing this is the music for you. The quality is like having Cherry Poppin Daddies right there with you performing it, it's that good. Zoot Suit Riot is a very up beat and fun cd for everyone to enjoy .

5 out of 5 stars Brought Swing to the 90s.......2007-03-12

The song Zoot Suit Riot brought Swing back to mainstream in the mid-90s, with it's ubiquitous radio airtime, that in turn spawned swing clubs across the country. That said, this album has a lot more to be said for it. Ding-Dong Daddy of the D-Car Line, Here Comes the Snake, Drunk Daddy, Brown Derby Jump and Shake your Moneymaker are all now mainstream Swing songs. Indeed, looking at this album, it has so many great songs it reads like a Greatest Hits album. Essential for any swing CD collection for both it's impact to the genre, as well as the quality of the music.

5 out of 5 stars zoot suit riot.......2006-11-03

I was introduced to this band by a friend, and have loved them eversince. This is the first album i heard of theirs and i must admit that it's one of my favorites.

4 out of 5 stars lacking a little.......2006-08-12

Overall, this is a good album and has a number of cool songs on it, which is why I rated it 4/5. "Drunk Daddy" is one of my favorites. =D

But, it was lacking a little. "Mister White Keys", "When I Change Your Mind", and "Come Back to Me" were't the greatest tracks I've heard. I didn't care for them.

It could have also been a little longer. I would have liked to have seen "Irish Whiskey", "Suicide Kings", and "We'll Always Have Paris" on there. =)

To me, it just doesn't qualify as a Greatest Hits album for this. It's good, but not for a Greatest Hits album.

5 out of 5 stars Straight ahead rocking CD from the master of muffins.......2006-12-12

How do you steer someone curious about Frank Zappa to a good place to start exploring his amazing career? Possibly the most prolific modern artist of all time, Zappa wore so many shoes it boggles the imagination.
Unlike some other classic Zappa albums that truly take getting used to, like "Weasels Ripped My Flesh" or "One Size Fits All", this CD rocks more than most anything else he did, with a minimal (in number, not ability) band to back him up. And, befitting his underappreciated guitar mastery, which easily is on a par with Jeff Beck and Jimi Hendrix for originality and overall excellence, "Zoot Allures" features plenty of Zappa guitar work, erasing any doubt to his brilliance.
Like all his material except for his instrumental works, Zappa was sarcastic, misanthropic and sometimes downright juvenile in his attacks on society in general. That acidic commentary is present here, but the real gem is the title track, "Zoot Allures", without question one of the most breathtakingly beautiful guitar instrumentals ever. It is indeed shocking to hear such elegance and sublety from a man not known for his restraint.
After this CD, one can leap virtually anywhere in the immense Zappa catalogue, but this reviewer recommends "Hot Rats" as his next stop and then perhaps "Shiek Yerbouti" or the "Joe's Garage" series. Zappa was a genius, and deserves more attention.

4 out of 5 stars Must have at least for three titles.......2006-02-09

Three songs contained here entered the Frank Zappa alltime favourites hall of fame. "Black napkins", "Zoot allures" and "The torture never stops". These three tunes are gems. Apart form these tunes, the album is really a basic rock kind of album not so special. A tribute to heavy metal? I don't know, I love heavy metal of the period and I don't find this album close to the true metal spirit. It's something different, it is Zappa in a basic form. It is alot less dramatic than metal and more grotesque and ironic. That's it. I think this is even not one of the best works in Zappa's discography because to me he expressed his potentials the most when he played the director's role with large ensembles (think Wazoo, Waka, Jazz noise here, In NY etc). Some songs here (disco boy or wind up .. for example) are even irritating. But the three that I talked about are absolutly stellar Zappa's music examples, so they alone justify the price ticket. If you are a newcomer in the Zappa's Universe go for Wazoo, Waka, Hot rats, or better than anything else probably, the exceptional big apple live concert, "Zappa in NY".

5 out of 5 stars Great Album, Excellent Tour.......2005-10-18

This one brings back loads of memories. I was one of the many that was waiting for this record to hit the shelves. We were part of the cult, the mass of regulars that made as many concerts as we could and knew all of Frank's inside jokes. We thought we were cool, but of course we weren't. This disc caused descent in the ranks. For some of the old school FZ fans, this was the last straw and they walked away muttering about how it was all downhill after the original Mothers were gone.

I was pretty much old school, having started out on Freak Out and progressing album by album, thanks to an old burnout that got me started into Frank's music at the bright young age of 12. But I didn't cling to the old school rant - new was OK and this, when it was new, sounded VERY good to me! The live show of this album tour that we saw was excellent too. For perspective, I was alcohol legal by the time of Zoot Allures... Some of the tunes hit me right in the face. I was working at a gas station while in college and took that minimum wage paycheck to pay for this disc. I worked at the gas station with a reject named Jerry that was a thief. He'd steal money out of the register and we'd all have to make up the shortage out of our paychecks, so nobody wanted to work with Jerry. So I remember hearing "Wind Up Workin' In A Gas Station" and thinking I should go play it for Jerry. I also wanted to go play "The Torture Never Stops" for one of my literature profs, because it reminded me of his class.

To get more to the review, just consider this: the album is a work of synergy in that the whole is much stronger than any individual portion. One could point out Black Naspkins, The Torture or the title track as being particularly strong, but it is the flow of the album that takes over once you get to know it. As usual, Frank was writing from his Amateur Anthropologist point of view (he should have been given an honorary degree in the field) in many of the songs, such as Gas Station, Ms. Pinky, Find Her Finer, Wonderful Wino and Disco Boy. It all weaves together perfectly and the playing and singing are outstanding.

5 out of 5 stars great.......2005-10-11

This album is stripped-down zappa. His tribute for heavy metal. Released in 1976, most of this album is done by Terry Bozzio on drums, and Zappa singing on most of the songs, playing guitar and drums. There's some appearances by Roy Estrada, George Duke, Ruth Underwood, and more. There was a lot of songs played live from this album. But I think that "The Torture Never Stops" is kind of too long. The rest of the album is really good. It has stripped-down tracks like "Wonderful Wino", "Ms. Pinky", "Find Her Finer", and "Wind Up Workin' In A Gas Station". It has guitar solo tracks "Black Napkins" and "Friendly Little Finger". "Zoot Allures" is difficult to play. And there's an anti-disco song "Disco Boy". This is really a great and underrated album, and I really recommend it.

One of a handful of pop groups in the latter half of the 1990s to exploit the renewed interest in American roots (swing, big band, soul) music, this Eugene, Oregon ensemble scored big with a neat modern update of the old school. Purists take note: Cherry Poppin' Daddies built a following by touring with third-wave ska outfits like Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Reel Big Fish, prompting main Daddy Steve Perry to wryly call his group "third-wave swing." But post-Swingers dance fanatics (rockabilly retro-cats, modern-day sockhoppers, and Royal Crown Revue boosters) don't sweat the particulars. Charged horn arrangements, bouncy rhythms, and saucy verve effectively recall masters like Basie, Cab, and Ol' Blue Eyes while injecting an unmistakable post-punk ethic. --Mark Woodlief

5 out of 5 stars great, excellent c.d. !!!!!.......2007-07-10

now look, from beginning to end, these guys did a heck of a job in bringing "swing jazz music" to life (the godfather rythom to allmost any music that ever made it mainstream in america).... yes, there are some lyrics on this album that has profanity... but SO FREAKIN WHAT!!! as far as i'm concerned about that aspect is, with all of the stuff that is popular now a days and what they talk about, this does'nt even come close to being vulgar like many of that STUFF!!! weather it be rock, rap, r&b, country, etc... so if you have an open mind and heart to what "music" was like before what's so popular now a days, then believe me, you won't go wrong with this album....

5 out of 5 stars I love these guys!.......2007-04-23

This cd is awesome, I love every single song on it. It is one of the greatest swing cds there is :) Don't hesitate to buy and/or listen to this.

2 out of 5 stars One hit wonders? .......2007-02-16

Not really all that good. And, the language used could be better. Not a keeper... Sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Nutso wacko swing...with a vengeance.......2007-01-16

This is not your father's swing band....whoa--not by a long shot! These guys don't hesitate to throw four letter words into their lyrics and combined with hot swing drumming, razzy brass and often snide vocals, you got yourself one heck of a different swing sound.

The sense of humor can be outrageous here--listen to "When I Change Your Mind" and tell me you ain't laughin' by the time the song reaches its wacky end. A number of reviewers pooh-pooh the musicianship on display here--one of 'em even said the entire album was "horrendous"--but ya gotta look past this kind of review and see what CPD is really doing--which is make fun of people looking for traditional swing in a new band and at the same time to shout out what swing was (and is) really all about--SEX. The word "jazz" itself was originally a verb that meant to engage in sex with someone (now replaced by the most infamous four letter word on the planet) and Cherry Poppin' Daddies know this (naturally, you can tell that even by the name of the band).

This is a lot of fun for those with a sharp edgy sense of humor. It's a novelty item, no question, but there's no way you're ever gonna find another new swing band that does what these guys do. This kind of like listening to a band made up of nothing but Jokers (i.e., the Joker from Batman)--you can actually HEAR the wicked cackles in their music with just about every tune.

Dig it!

5 out of 5 stars Red Hot Swing ,Smokin' Horns,.......2006-09-23

This CD has been a fave for me over the last 8 years or so...I keep comin' back to it for an adreneline boost, literally. I've also got cds from BBVD,RCR,Squirrel Nut Zippers etc.,but for my money this is the real deal. There's not one bad track and several outstanding ones...my faves include Ding Dong Daddy(breathtaking opening)Mister White Keys,Master and Slave,Dr. Bones,Come Back To Me,Drunk Daddy(disturbing images, but killer track all the same)and Shake Your Lovemaker.I admire Steve Perry for his skill with lyrics .While at times dark and nasty ,it is honest, full of imagery and downright fun for the most part.He is not blessed with much range in his voice , but uses what he has well. The music ,especially the horn arrangements literally jumps out of the speakers .Go ahead ,Try and keep still.Hopefully,we'll hear more ,even though swing has gone below the radar again, the music is too damned good to completely disappear.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal West Coast stuff.......2007-05-07

This cd is a very nice collector's dream from Lonehill. Even if this time they changed the original cover in this case I can forgive them. The new cover in my opinion is extremely nice so I can pass over this thing (even if generally the original cover is a must for me). This double cd collection comprehend some phenomenal fifties sessions from the guys. More or less 40 tunes from four sessions that were in the albums. Al&Zoot, You&Me, AtoZ and another earlier session. I can say this stuff is phenomenal West Coast music! The two altos create whirlwinds of sounds on tunes that are the epitome of West Coast sound! I can really suggests this collection because the music is great great stuff, no problem absolutly! You can buy the sessions separately because at least a coiuple of them are still available, but you are gonna spend a lot of money. Here they are well repackaged. But the main thing is the music. This double cd is a gem! Buy it without esitation.

4 out of 5 stars Air meets Hall & Oates meets Goldfrapp.......2006-04-19

A combination of the sound of Air (or Zero 7, if you prefer), Hall & Oates and the current Goldfrapp. That is the best way I can describe the music from this self titled album by the England-based trio Zoot Woman. Among the tracks, "Taken It All" stands above the rest, with "Useless Anyway" as a close second. The rest of the album, being a production with touches of chillout here and there (something we are all a bit tired of by now), continues to packs a surprisingly fun musical punch more than three years after its original release.

4 out of 5 stars Coming to America.......2004-11-10

Hope this is not hype, but Zoot Womans most recent album will finally be released domestically. Neither the U.K. or America have been able to really enjoy this bands great sounds. Each album seems to grow and mature without becoming predictable. Grey Day, the lead song on the domestic release, will surely become a College favorite. Probably the best alt-rock band out of France in recent memory.

3 out of 5 stars living in a magazine is waaaaayy better.......2004-08-08

this album isnt bad, just not as wonderful as their first album.

5 out of 5 stars ZOOT WOMAN aka JACQUES LU CONT aka LRD aka PAPER FACES!!!.......2004-04-17

First things first: STUART PRICE aka ZOOT WOMAN aka LES RHYTHMES DIGITALES aka PAPER FACES is a GENIUS! Second: WHY OH WOW isn't this CD (as well as their last one LIVING IN A MAGAZINE) released in America?? Zoot Woman's leader was the musical director of Madonna's last tour, why couldn't she have the vision to release it domestic on Maverick/WB? For sheet quality in both production and songwriting craft, this could be the best "dance" album of the last few years...or rock...or pop...or, you get the idea. It's a real shame that more people in the U.S. don't know about ZOOT WOMAN - at least for now it can be our little secret!! :)

    4 out of 5 stars Great Stuff.......2004-04-09

I heard 'Grey Day' for the first time on an online radio and was immediately hooked. Having bought this album I was not disappointed. I am not usually a fan of eighties synth style music, but the combination of upbeat tracks and some more soulful tunes reminded me of French albums like Phoenix's 'United', and Etienne de Crecy's 'Tempovision', both of which I would strongly advise if you haven't already checked them out. If you are interested in the Wall of Sound label then have a look at Roykspopp and Black Twang.

Some of the tracks on this are weaker than others, and the first four or five on the album are the strongest (hence four rather than 5 stars), but it does work well overall. If you like it, then have a look at their first album, 'Living in a Magazine' particularly the title track and the first one, both of which have very cool videos (check out french tv) and really define this band for me. It's not always good to compare albums, and the differences between the styles of music may reflect maturity. I think the tracks on this album do have a more distinct and strong style than its predecessor. Nevertheless I prefer that album, hence the comparsion! "I've got a feeling, it's automatic!"

Since jazz is a continuous process of learning and experimenting, many artists have continued to thrive well into their autumn years, even if not quite at past levels. Yet, in the cases of both Joe Venuti and Zoot Sims, their most memorable and spirited work actually came in the 1970s, when Venuti was in his 70s and Sims his 50s. The first thing that comes across when listening to this record, which combines four cuts from a 1974 session with a complete 1975 session, is just how closely Venuti and Sims are listening to each other's ideas. They very often feed off each other, finishing one another's sentences even when talking simultaneously, and engaging in a playful game of hide and seek. Both possess an extraordinary combination of tenderness and wit as well as unyielding respect for the old and often obscure melodies they choose to interpret. Venuti's playing shows amazing versatility and range, weeping one moment, grinning brightly the next, swinging with modern flair and then reverting to Old World styles. Based on the pair's compatibility alone, this makes for delightful, enchanting listening. --Marc Greilsamer

An energetic, exuberant player, tenor saxophonist Zoot Sims is perhaps best known for his membership in the famous "four brothers" sax section of Woody Herman's late-forties Herd, and for his longstanding small-group collaborations with fellow tenorman Al Cohn. Yet neither of those pigeonholes do his abilities justice: Sims was a remarkably complete musician, comfortable playing everything from hard bop to swing to Dixieland. And though most clearly drawing his musical delineation from Lester Young, Sims was also capable of a raw, free-swinging style that hinted at the influence of the Texas tenor school and such boppers as Dexter Gordon and Wardell Gray. His dynamism is evident on Zoot Sims and the Gershwin Brothers: the 10-song compilation, recorded in 1975, uses such jazz improvisation stalwarts as "The Man I Love," "I Got Rhythm," "Summertime," and "Embraceable You" to showcase his absolute command of the modern jazz vocabulary. If the record label, Norman Granz's Pablo, was overly reliant on a core group of technically breathtaking but somewhat predictable players, the presence of label stars pianist Oscar Peterson and guitarist Joe Pass as sidemen here proved a blessing. --Fred Goodman

5 out of 5 stars Zoot Sims - The Swinger.......2007-05-27

Recorded when Zoot Sims was 49 and obviously at the top of his form and feeling fine. Tasty piano licks and solid accompaniment are provided by Oscar Peterson. Joe Pass provides some nice guitar work, while solid rhythm is laid down by Grady Tate and George Mraz - who worked with Sims some in the 1950's, I believe. He contibutes a rare bowed solo on one of the cuts here.
Sims' inate sense of rhythm is why they called him a swinger. No matter the complexity or length of solo, Zoot would very rarely lose the beat or his "place". He had wonderful ideas of melodic composition in his improvisational work. And while he certainly can be said to have been strongly influenced by Lester Young, who was playing with Count Basie when Sims was growing up, Zoot was not a copy of anyone in his style. Most knowledgeable jazz buffs would count Zoot among the most accomplished tenor saxophonists of all time.
If you like small group jazz, this is some of the best to be had and will be enjoyed by most jazz fans.

        5 out of 5 stars One of Zoot's best.......2005-12-17

Recorded in 1975 and one of Zoot's finest CDs. His rich, warm tone is at the fore on every tune, whether it's an up-tempo swinger like THE MAN I LOVE or I GOT RHYTHM or a slow ballad like HOW LONG HAS THIS BEEN GOING ON. All of these are familiar songs to Zoot, he's probably played most a thousand times, but he is still able to make them sound fresh. Pianist Oscar Peterson can be overpowering at times, but on this album he restrains himself and plays tasty accompaniment (his solos are excellent, too). Joe Pass is on guitar and solos nicely on what I consider the highlight track, 'S WONDERFUL. George Mraz (b) and Grady Tate (d) offer solid support throughout. This is straight ahead, solid mainstream jazz at its finest. Definitely worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars Energetic and Inspired.......2005-10-11

This is a very inspired and energetic interpretation by Zoot Sims of Gershwin classics. Zoot swings here with great excitement and attacks the famous tunes in a very inspired fashion. He is very well supported by Peterson, Pass, Mraz and Tate. This is without a doubt a classic recording date that takes you for a wonderful journey from track one to eleven. It is that good that after 50 minutes you wish there was more to come.

5 out of 5 stars Passionate Expression and Headlong Swing!.......2002-04-09

Well, what more can be said...Sims, Peterson, Pass, Mraz and Tate playing Gershwin...the hardest part is deciding which track I like best. Truth be told, they can't take this CD away from me and it would be a pity if you didn't add it to your collection. 'S Wonderful indeed!

        4 out of 5 stars One of Zoot's best........2000-01-17

Zoot Sims never made a bad album, but he did make a great number that were merely very good. This one, however, is excellent. Sims, Peterson, and Pass all solo beautifully, and the bass and drum team of Mraz and Tate are behind them every step of the way. The two standout tracks are 'I Got Rhythm', where Sims follows an explosive Peterson solo with full-throated honks and excursions into his beautiful upper register; and 'Embraceable You', when Zoot proves that only Webster, Getz, and Hawkins can challenge him for beauty of tone. That said, there isn't a bad track on this CD, and it will give any Zoot fan -- any jazz fan -- a great deal of pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars A Duet Made in Heaven.......2007-03-01

By the time that Blues for Two had been recorded, Joe Pass had made a reputation as an outstanding solo guitarist (Virtuoso) and accompanist of Ella Fitzgerald. This is a rare opportunity for him to interact with the swinging, melodic and inventive Zoot Sims. While Pass indicates in the liner notes that he isn't much of a "four-to-the-bar" accompanist, in truth he is fantastic here, playing around, under and with Zoot as well as spinning his own stories when it's his turn to solo.

The slower-tempo'd songs (Dindi, Forgot to Remember, for example) are beautiful, sensuous examples that real jazz can be musical and inventive at the same time. This is a must-have.

5 out of 5 stars Two of the Best.......2002-01-16

Did Joe Pass ever miss a note? Did Zoot Sims ever stop swinging?Zoot on the sax, Joe on the guitar--the result is one of those recordings that you just have to keep, even if you periodically go through your collection and weed out some of cd's that, well, don't get too much action, too much air time in your house. Some were constantly played when you got them, but, after a while, don't have the immediacy of new purchases or the timelessness of classic recordings.

Two for the Blues is a keeper. A simple concept--two artists feeding off one another's genius--yields wondrous results, and each new playing allows you to find something new to delight in. Pass, of course, with his Virtuoso recordings, made it clear that the guitar was as capable as any instrument of creating true jazz, so it isn't surprising to hear his solos on many of the cuts--Zoot sits down and turns the studio over to Pass.

At other times, they accompany each other, one moving to the background while the other takes the lead. Zoot swings, while Pass comps in the backseat; Pass plucks out some of those crystal lines of his, while Zoot meanders through the melody. Each is respectful of the other, generous with the other, but nothing here is formal or stilted. The tunes just flow.

Listen to Pennies from Heaven, all 7:39 of it. It doesn't seem that this melody would fit on a recording called Blues for Two, but these guys recreate this chestnut. The melody line is distinct in the first thirty or so seconds, and in the final thirty or so seconds. In between, you have about six minutes of improvising, staking out new territory, taking chances. Sims and Pass. Pass and Sims. As equals, or each taking the lead for a while--these guys turn Pennies From Heaven into a quietly swinging, sometimes meditative, but never predictable jazz piece.

Recently, tenorman Scott Hamilton and legendary guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli released a tribute cd to Zoot entitled The Red Door. The more one listens to it, the more it seems that this newer cd is actually a tribute to both Sims and Pass, and the yeoman-like work they do on Blues for Two.

Concord Records, in the eighties and nineties, launched a wonderful duo series, featuring artists such as Ed Bickert and Bill Mays, Dave McKenna and Gray Sargent, Bill Charlap and Michael Moore, Howard Alden and Ken Peplowski. Concord seemed aware of the intimacy and creativity that very special duos can create. Look into the series before all the recordings go out of print.

But...first, get the real deal--Zoot and Joe, endlessly and timelessly swinging in musical and spiritual harmony

        5 out of 5 stars six stars!!!!.......2001-10-02

The communication between these two performers is at the very highest level. Indeed, I usually play this for people and scream "this is what is meant by musical communication". Aside from the technical brilliance and flawless execution of the playing, this is flat-out one of the all time laid-back, mellow-swinging sessions ever produced. Every piece achieves an utterly smooth flow. Think of the hypnotic modal aura behind Kind of Blue, the singular brilliance behind Coltrane's My Favorite Things or the complex moody lyricism behind a Wayne Shorter arrangement -- this stuff gives us a comprehensive view of a particular kind of musical language and it creates whole new emotional environments. Similarly with Blues For Two, which provides an answer to the following question: just how far can a duo format go in terms of sheer rhythmic beauty?

5 out of 5 stars Great Jazz Duo.......2000-02-04

If you like traditional jazz played in a small ensemble setting you'll probably like this recording. The quality on this CD is very good. It sounds as if it were recorded live in the studio, and the interaction between players seems to indicate this. Joe Pass provides first-class accompanying (as usual). Zoot Sims plays well here. His soprano work on "Pennies From Heaven" is some of his best recorded work. He has a melodic style of playing and swinging that speaks for itself. It's "real cool". Definately a great jazz master. One of my favorite recordings.
