This two-CD collection brings the best of Charlie Parker's Verve recordings. The Verve sessions were recorded under the influence of impresario Norman Granz, who put Parker into a wide range of settings (quartet, big band, strings, and even a woodwind quintet with vocals are included here), playing both Parker originals as well as popular songs of the day. These are not the pared-down, blistering performances of the Savoy and Dial sessions; however, they are quite remarkable in that they reveal the astonishing breadth of Parker's musical genius. two discs of some of the greatest music i've ever heard in my life. it's been playing at least twice a day (both discs) since i got it home. and i simply cannot listen to it without moving some part of my body to the rhythm. it's almost supernatural. i understand the term "bop" now...i never did before. it makes jack kerouac's writing a little more coherent.

looking back over the last year, i've had this in my rotation as much as all other hip hop, jazz, and rock combined. mostly that's disc 1 (disc two has both great and regrettable stuff on it). it's time for me to go back and fill in the holes, but if you're looking for a place to start, i think this collection is on the money.

The most beautiful selections from classic sessions of the late 40's and early 50's, including the Sept '49 Carnegie Hall concert (includes Ella) and one with Dave Lambert and Annie Ross from '53.

Not his best playing, but his widest range of playing.......1999-05-01

The dial and savoy sessions are smaller, shorter and more brilliant. But Norman Granz was committed to bring Charlie Parker to the world beyond bebop fans, and this album is the best of those efforts. From the Carib "My little suede shoes" to the small group bop "Blues for alice", "Au Privave" and "Confirmation" to the best of strings "Laura" and "April in Paris" to jam fests with Ella and Benny Carter and Coleman Hawkins, to the perfectly dreadful "Old Folks" this album gives you the full picture of the late charlie parker. Listen very carefully for Tony Aless on "Repetition" -- it's worth the effort!

Album Description

CONFIRMATION is the first album after the release of PORTRAIT OF SHEILA JORDAN in 1962 from Blue Note. Sheila Jordan waited more than a decade for an opportunity to sing the kind of songs she likes with the musicians she liked to perform with. She said if given a chance to record another album, she would dedicate it to her daughter Tracy and to children all over the world. She got that chance. The first side of the original LP, consisting of five tracks, relate to children in one way or another. She brings her distinct improvisational style, which was influenced mostly by instrumentalists like Charlie Parker rather then singers, and makes each of the songs uniquely her own. Sheila still performs "Pearlie's Swine" as part of her live repertoire.

Bravo to Test of Time Records!.......2005-08-22

...for releasing this neglected classic--and with such pure, crystalline sound to boot! (The liner notes imply that the original was released in 1975 on Blue Note; but actually, it was on a tiny label, "Eastwind.")

This was Sheila Jordan's second album, released when she was 47-years-old. Obviously, she must have been a mom in the not-too-recent past relative to 1975, as the first 5 songs (side 1 on the original l.p.) are dedicated to children. The whole album is inspired.

Sheila Jordan has one of the most interesting singing voices in all non-classical music. She starts small--almost breathy. But she can transform her voice to a big, pure sound quickly. She probably has the largest dramatic vocal range of any singer around whom I've heard.

The accompanying musicians on this disc (Alan Pasqua(p.), Norman Marnell (ten. sax), Cameron Brown (b) and Beaver Harris (d)) are equally as versatile. Sometimes they seem like "outside musicians looking in"; other times they are more like "Inside musicians looking out." Whichever the case, the 5 artists create very stimulating art. I particularly was taken with their versions of "God Bless the Child", "Confirmation" (which sounds nothing like the vocalese version of Bird's classic done by the Manhattan Transfer) and "Pearlie's Swine".

Sheila Jordan is a neglected artist. She is one who is said to refuse to compromise, which accounts in part for her relatively small catalogue. This consistently outstanding album is testament to that. Very highly recommended. RC

Another Fine Flanagan Studio Recording.......2003-01-26

This one is on the Enja label and was recorded in February 1977 and November 1978 (tracks 3 and 4). As usual, this features Tommy Flanagan's impeccable and tasteful playing, augmented by the excellent bass work of George Mraz and the drum work of Elvin Jones.

My personal favorite is the first track, a lovely but little known composition by Percy Faith, "Maybe September".

The longest cut on the cd is the ballad "It Never Entered My Mind" which is the only version by Tommy Flanagan that I've heard, the other five tracks having been performed by him at other times on other albums.

This offering also features some of the tasteful bass work of George Mraz.

The only drawback is the total recording checks in at less than 36 minutes.....which kept it from being a "5". The sound, since it is studio, is excellent.

You will like this if you like excellent piano, especially Tommy Flanagan, or if you dig a good jazz trio.

Not only are reoccuring issues of international conflict adressed, but inquiries into things spiritual,emotional, and romantic(i.e. Sunrise Sunset, a splendid cover from the Fiddler on the Roof) are brushed on the Midas canvas with all the integrity of the voice that is truly one of the dreadest creators of reggae music. A crucial release likely to satiate even the most particular reggae palate. Thank you Ras Midas for a depth and quality largely absent in these times of " Business Music"! Midas is truly in the "Music Business", and what fine music he gifts us.
