McCoy Tyner was born in Philadelphia in 1938. He studied at the West Philadelphia and Granoff Music Schools, and at the age of 15 formed his first group- a seven piece R&B unit. At 17, while working with trumpeter Calvin Massey, he met John Coltrane. They worked a couple of jobs together, and it was understood that Tyner would be a part of the band that Coltrane hoped to form.
In 1959, McCoy had the opportunity to join Art Framer and Benny Golson. It was with this group that the 20-year-old Tyner made his recording debut. But after 6 months, Tyner heard of Coltrane forming his group and went to join. He went on to record some 20 albums with the Coltrane group. Also during this time, he recorded a number of albums for the Impulse label under his own name. He also created several memorable albums with the musicians like Ron Carter, Lee Morgan, and Joe Henderson.
In 1972 he was nominated for 2 Grammies and named Album of the Year by the Down Beat Critics Poll. In the all 1978, Tyner spent time working with another band, the Milestone Jazzstars, with Ron Carter, Sonny Rollins, and Al Foster.
Tyner possesses one of t most galvanizing and instantly identifiable techniques in jazz piano; percussive, powerful and yet very sensitive. In recent years Tyner has emerged as an astonishingly complete musician and one of the most influential figures on the scene.
Product Description
The Warsaw Jazz Jamboree has been a tradition in Warsaw, Poland for more than 30 years. The U.S. government provided funds through the Polish Jazz Society to "Needle" the Communist rulers of Poland by helping to bring jazz to the oppressed citizens of Poland. After all, jazz is not only America's only original art form, but the epitome of "free" expression.
When Poland became free, our State Department no longer had a "budget" to support the Warsaw Jazz Jamboree. The Polish Jazz Society turned to Who's Who In Jazz to raise funds and produce the 1991 Jazz Jamboree.
We choose as our venue the beautiful and acoustically excellent Operetka House. The Polish press reviewed our four nights of concerts and pronounced the festival, "the greatest event in the history of jazz in Poland."
This is McCoy Tyner's solo performance in all its splendor recorded on October 27, 1991.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic recording marred by horrible production........2005-09-23
But what a performance it is-- I often feel Jackson's live records fail to convey something they should, this one is just bristling with energy and power-- check out drum/sax duet "Front Seat Frisco". Carter pulls out all the stops, showing a John Zorn-like array of technique on the instrument, flutters, clicks, overblows, harmonics-- after several unaccompanied minutes, Jackson joins him and the two just burn until... oh look! Someone figured this was a good time to fade the record out. Even with this, the record ranges from free jazz to funk (opener "Christmas Woman"), an almost Carribean vibe (the funky "Camaroon Morning") and in between-- Carter and guitarist Jef Lee Johnson do steal the show more often than not (guitar feature "Night in Seville" is brilliant-- although a couple minutes into the unaccompanied guitar coda, you guessed it, it fades out).
So in short, for fans, there's enough burning, powerful music here to make it worthwhile, but the presentation is so horrible it ruins it for the more casual listener.

One of the least interesting live Muddies.......2005-08-10
It's not bad, Muddy never was, but on "Screamin' And Cryin'" Muddy neither screams nor cries...it's a more laid-back Muddy Waters than on earlier recordings, and the set is burdened by too many s-l-o-w numbers and mediocre instrumentals, and not enough firepower.
There are some highlights as well, of course, like "Blow Wind Blow" and "Hoochie Coochie Man", but there is really nothing here which isn't available in equally good or better renditions on other live recordings of the Muddy Waters blues band. This rendition of "Got My Mojo Working" is disappointing, and "Screamin' And Cryin'" lacks the intensity of terrific live albums like "Mojo: The Live Collection", "The Lost Tapes", "Chicago 1979" and of course the Newport album.
Go for any of those instead; this one is for completists.

Tyner goes solo.......2005-02-19
Tyner branched out on his own in the late 1960's, leaving Coltrane to foray further into his extended free jazz explorations with wife Alice replacing Tyner at piano. However, although his prodigious style is well suited to it, Tyner wouldn't record a solo album until the famous and excellent Coltrane tribute, Echoes of Friend, released in 1972. Throughout the 70's, Tyner typically fronted larger bands, not returning to solo concerts until a string of Blue Note records from 1989 and 1990 (Revelations, Things Ain't What They Used to Be (also containing some duets), and Soliloquy). Unfortunately, those solo dates tend towards the sedate and balladic, at least compared to typical Tyner, whose style is, in the tradition of Oscar Peterson, expansive and billowing with thundering left-hand chords and break-neck right-hand runs, flourishes, and trills.
And so, the Warsaw Concert is a welcome cap to those solo outings, because it is more energetic, emotional, and adventurous. This may have something to do with the set-list, which includes only two standards (Beautiful Love, Darn That Dream) while featuring six originals, two Coltrane tunes (Giant Steps, Naima), and two by Monk (Rhthym-A-Ning, Monk's Dream). In fact, the pacing of these tunes tends toward the similar and many of them are ballads at their core, with trademark Tyner embellishments. However, it's refreshing to hear Tyner briskly attack Giant Steps and Rhthym-A-Ning (he rarely seems to interpret Monk), play a blues-based tune (Bluesin' With Bob), offer up some full-bodied originals (Miss Bea, Lady From Caracas, Rio), and close out the set with the familiar Coltrane anthem, Naima. Tyner also introduces several of the numbers, giving this a nice live concert feel.
Tyner's ample talents are really showcased in the solo format, and it is nice to hear him take advantage of the space in this concert. This, along with Echoes of a Friend, are the Tyner solo dates to have.
The recording quality was suprisingly good, given a little known label (remember, I have the Fresh Sounds release) and the live recording -- the piano sounds deep and full bodied (though the live applause is muffled and faint).
