3 out of 5 stars Typical Mancini.......2007-03-25

First, I really like Mancini's music generally and I am really concerned that he may be one of the greats of American music who will soon be forgotten if he hasn't been already. (US music schools tend to be a little snobby and don't give a number of truly great American composers their due.) However, the mix of this particular CD is simply too average. Many good songs are not on it and some weak ones are. I would not recommend this CD except to ManciniPhiles like me.

4 out of 5 stars It's Hard to Believe He's Gone.......2006-05-23

Henry Mancini gave us so much of our consciousness of the 1960s and 1970s, and yet was "out" almost as soon as he was "in."

His work became synonymous with much-despised "elevator music" in the later 1960s. This stereotype (or monotype, for his earliest works) can mislead.

For example, "Lujon" [not in this collection] was used in a movie just last year to exemplify mystery and an exotic atmosphere.

Mancini dies way too young. While some would argue that he'd become a self-parody, his innate gifts compromised by relentless commercialization, you cannot take away his lasting gift to our culture. He was an original, and he captured an essence of our collective experience.

He's here in this collection, waiting round the bend, my Huckleberry friend.

A great trip down memory lane. The selections sound just like I remember them from the movies and the radio. Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars On connaît tous sa musique, beaucoup moins son nom..........2005-09-20

5 out of 5 stars Henry Mancini's Greatest Hits.......2005-07-13

This CD is all one needs to understand why this dude is the master when it comes to composing. Having been introduced to this great human being at an early age, my fascination for his work is still a vital part of my being. This CD is just what I have always wanted. It has all the classics, along with some older gems I never knew existed. I love it so much, that I am going to send my mama back home one. She was, is and always will be perhaps his GREATEST FAN ever. If you just can't live without Mancini's music, then this CD is for you. Enjoy, enjoy,
enjoy!!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lujon.......2006-05-23

Here is where the song "Lujon" (used last year to great effect) first appeared.

Mancini prided himself on his versatility and range. It is in full evidence here - and used as the soundtrack for a very forgettable TV series starring Ross Martin and John Vivyan (put those names in on Google and see what you get...).

Still, you gotta say that this was an amazing talent we had in Henry Mancini, and he is very much missed.

5 out of 5 stars Mancini For Lucky Listeners..........2003-12-26

What we have here is a beautifully packaged French reissue of two classic Mancini LP's. The first, 'Mr. Lucky' is the brilliant and quirky music from the TV series of the same name. 'Goes Latin' only gives the 'Latin' treatment to the theme from 'Mr. Lucky', then goes off in it's own direction. In my opinion, the 'Latin' half is the real treasure, and the reason to buy this version instead of the plain 'Mr. Lucky' soundtrack (available elsewhere by itself.)

Of course, 'Mr. Lucky' has great cuts like the main theme, 'March Of The Cue Balls', and 'Chime Time', not to mention the eerie, beautiful and stunning 'Floating Pad' and the pointillistically insane 'Tipsy.' The 'Goes Latin' half really gets into some sonic gorgeousness, the kind that Mancini is known for and does best! 'Lujon', for instance, has a haunting sweeping string melody with some very cool downward chord changes. I think it's one of Mancini's classic cuts. 'Blue Mantilla' is another slow weeper, equally remarkable. And of course there's also Mancini's playful side, represented by cuts such as 'Rain Drops In Rio' or 'No-Cal Sugar Loaf'( ! )

Really. every cut on here is worthwhile for Mancini fans, lounge fans, or film music fans. These 'two-fer' reissues are worth what you pay, not only for the plethora of wonderful songs you get, but for the painstakingly reproduced liner notes, detailed lists of all the musicians, etc. Two lost treasures brought back to light!

Album Details

Digitally Remastered Double Anthology of the Pop and Soundtrack Composer from the 50's and 60's. Perhaps his Best Counterpart of Today Would Be John Williams. A Film Maker Could Always Rely on Mancini to Deliver a Composition that Hit the Mark for a Film and Conveyed Exactly What was Required and More. He also Filled the Role of an American Mantovani, Recording 'muzak' Versions of Popular Hits. He was Handsome, Personable, but Most of All, Well Respected for his Craft.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars not enough Galway.......2003-10-02

There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.

5 out of 5 stars Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03

I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

5 out of 5 stars Mr Lucky.......2007-05-13

Dave Grusins arrangements of Gershwin and his work with Lee Ritenour and Brasil artists is astounding. He makes everything so listenable! So here we have him arranging the great original works of Hank Mancini. The magic of both these great musicians is overwhelming. Henry wrote some great classics. Dave Grusin gives them a freshness that you will want to listen to over and over again.

4 out of 5 stars Wife is happy now........2007-01-09

Wife had heard this CD on FM radio and secretly wrote it's name on slip of paper. I found it and got it for her for Christmas. "When mama is happy, everbody is happy."

5 out of 5 stars Moonlight homage!.......2006-06-08

Dave Grusin made a very heartfelt homage in Henry Mancini `s memory with this striving album that deserves all your special attention.

If I had to find any motive of complaint around this invaluable CD is the few number of songs. Perhaps Moon river, Charade, and Sunflower could be arranged and included because these three themes were emblematic and definitive in the winning career of Mancini

The only hope I have is that Cruisin makes a second album. But this is fantastic entry to enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars "Fresh, Interesting and Successful Music!".......2006-05-21

I remember collecting Mancini on vinyl when I was a kid. The phrase above was on one of the album covers.

I see Henry Mancini, in hindsight, as a classic example of how talent is consumer voraciously by the entertainment business. He enjoyed his success, to be sure, but it sucked everything out of him, too.

This album is distinguished by its final track though. First, I did not know that lyrics existed for "Soldier in the Rain," and wonder who wrote them. Second, to me, Grusin's choice of this track as the last depicted was no accident. Mancini was a devoted father and husband, and he wanted the best for his children, very much including his son. "That your someday child, never knows the rain."

Grusin's tribute to this great musician and composer is well-fitted and much welcomed.

5 out of 5 stars Dave Grusin Plays Mancini . . . Two For The Road.......2006-01-17

Dave Grusin's greatest influence and inspiration in his musical career was Henry "Hank" Mancini, and he dedicated this album in memory of the legendary composer. When he was younger and trying to decide what road to take, he thought of the music of Henry Mancini and some other composers such as André Previn and Elmer Bernstein.

According to Dave Grusin, Hank Mancini was "as generous with advice and enthusiasm as anyone he had known in this arena, the whimsical good humor you hear in his music was there in real life as well."

Dave Grusin is joined by some of the finest studio musicians in creating one of the best Henry Mancini tributes: John Pattitucci (bass), Harvey Mason (drums), Russell Malone (guitar), Paulinho Da Costa (percussion), Tollak Ollestad (harmonica), Gary Grant (trumpet), Andrew Martin (trombone), Jerry Hey and the Hot Band, Dan Higgins, Tom Scott and Eric Marienthal (sax). Diana Krall did the vocals on "Dreamsville" and "Soldier In The Rain."

This is Henry Mancini music in smooth jazz, so typical of Dave Grusin's innovative and jazz-oriented arrangements and it presented not only his skills but also his dedication to piano playing.

It's an awesome CD to listen to and enjoy the music of Henry Mancini and the artistry of Dave Grusin. You'll be delighted with all the selections especially his terrific interpretations of "Moment To Moment," "Two For The Road," "Baby Elephant Walk" and "Days of Wine and Roses."

Very highly recommended.

HBO's pioneering series takes the dark carnival gambit of Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes, drops it in the bleak heartland of Dust Bowl-era America and jolts it with a compelling undercurrent of Biblical apocalypse. That's no easy dramatic flux to musically evoke, but veteran TV composer Jeff Beal graces the show with cues that seamlessly fuse Appalachian folk traditions with a brooding, goth-inspired ambient gloom. The anxious solo fiddle of the show's theme is a repeating motif, one the composer uses to variously evoke melancholy ("Dora Mae's Funeral"), bittersweet romance ("Rita Sue and Jonesy") or supernatural wonders ("Ben Heals the Girl"). Beal's use of mournful solo horn (as on "Mark of the Beast") often heralds the show's undercurrent of Biblical doom, while his hesitant, haunting piano passages seem to hang in the air for eternity. The evocative cues here stand in stark contrast to the oft-quirky jazz cool of the composer's Emmy-winning work on Monk, ample tribute to Beal's masterful abilities to channel his musical instincts into even the most diverse dramatic material. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars A wonderfully different listening experience.......2005-12-06

Some albums sound like group of songs thrown together randomly. Some work together towards a story, like Tommy or Kilroy Was Here. But, this album is different than most. Mr. Happy Go Lucky is a collection of songs that have a sound that is different than what you hear with most modern rock, and they all hang together in a melodious way.

Overall, I found this to be a wonderfully different listening experience. The tunes are not toe-tapping pop music, but are enthralling, and make for a fascinating music session. I really enjoy this album, and give it my highest recommendations.

5 out of 5 stars Totally underated.......2005-08-28

Persoanlly, I think this is the best Mellancamp album. Clearly John's brush with death (heart attack before this) left him focused and it shows in this album. Not your typical Mellancamp effort - many fans might be left somewhat confused and disappointed, but from a more objective perspective this might be his best album. Integrated and thematically consistent in a way that many of his others albums are not. One could think of this as his "Sgt. Pepper." Highly reccommended for anyone.

3 out of 5 stars Happy Sound.......2005-07-28

On Mr. Happy Go Lucky, John Mellencamp teams up with producer Junior Vasquez for the most interesting sounding album of his career. By employing Mr. Vasquez, the songs have a hip-hop flavor and a dance floor beat. The album has a sonic resonance that adds a fuller sound to the songs. In that respect, the experiment works. The problem with the album is that the songs aren't up to Mr. Mellencamp's usual standards. There are a few excellent songs like "Just Another Day", "Jerry", "Jackamo Road" and "The Full Catastrophe". The rest of the songs are well produced, but they sound like he is more interested in the new sound than the songs themselves.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing followup to The Healer.......2003-03-13

John Lee Hooker provided some very basic but important music in his time. The Healer was a landmark album bringing John back to the fore with some good cuts which made up for his musical deficiencies. This album attempts to go down the same road but in general fails to achieve the same heights. The best tracks are 'Stripped me naked' with Carlos Santana and 'This is hip' with Ry Cooder. I prefer the original JLH cuts of the track on the album.

2 out of 5 stars If you must have everything.......2001-07-11

Hooker's second album on the Pointblank label is a guest-heavy homage that doesn't have a great deal to do with John Lee Hooker as an artist and only occasionally plays to his strengths. Some cuts, such as the opening "I Want to Hug You" are just plain odd in their selection. This album is for the completist; sporadically enjoyable but unnecessary. The title cut is much better in its original version on "Urban Blues" (a somewhat chaotic but quite good album from the late '60s), while "Backstabbers" (actually "Backbiters and Syndicators", another remake from the same album) meanders too. The later cuts are better and, as usual, the fewer musicians playing with Hooker the less his sound gets mucked up. "Highway 13", "Father Was a Jockey" and yet another remake of "Crawlin' Kingsnake" are all quite nice. One wishes Hooker's late '80s and '90s producers more often had had the sense to leave him by himself or with minimal accompaniment. So, like all of Hooker's work on Pointblank, this is less about making a good album than honoring a lifetime of work. Still and all, worth having. His June 21st passing is greatly mourned.

5 out of 5 stars All Star Cast.......2001-06-13

When one of the most revered blues guitarists asks for help on his album, there is no shortage of great talent to show up. The likes of Santana, Ry Cooder, Albert Collins, Johnny Winter, John Hammond, and Robert Cray (to name just a few) come out in support of "Mr. Lucky", the follow up guest album to "The Healing". But, John Lee Hooker doesn't need all of this talent to put out a great blues album.

Robert Cray shows up on the title cut of this album providing some great leads to Hooker's rhythm. A tune that makes Hooker "... feel a little better". Albert Collins steps in for "Backstabbers" providing a powerful presence that only he was capable of. All you have to hear is one note of Collins to know it's him. "I Cover the Waterfront" is a haunting tune with Van Morrison taking over the guitar work and Booker T. Jones on organ. Morrison's voice complements the low-boom of Hooker's. Another highlight is Santana's work on "Stripped Me Naked".

Hooker's Delta Blues sound is hypnotizing, and his deep voice is lazy and sweet. There are very few that have shaped the sound of music, especially the blues, as he has. This album, a tribute of sorts, is a must for blues lovers. To hear so much talent gathered in one place playing with a legend like Hooker gives me the chills.

5 out of 5 stars Mr Lucky made me Mr Happy (but broke!)........2003-04-14

After years of searching I finally struck Gold, and had to order "Mr Lucky" & the "Fools Gold" first album.
I didn't even blink at the [money amount]price which included handling & shipping, but winced a bit upon receipt when I had to fork out another [money amount]in UK customs & postage charges!.
Oh well, I still consider that it was my lucky day to find two of my favourite 70's albums on cd, there is no doubt about it Fools Gold were (are?) absolutely brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars WERE LUCKY TO GET "MR. LUCKY" ON CD.......2001-08-25

It's about time that they released the 2nd album of FOOL'S GOLD on CD. When you listen to Mr. Lucky you will see how the band progressed from being DAN FOGELBERG'S back up band to a group that could stand on it's own two feet. The songs on this CD are much better than the 1st FOOL'S GOLD CD, not to say the 1st one was bad but they really improved the sound on this one. The song CAPTAIN is my favorite one on this CD, it tells a great story. I just wished they would of stayed together for more albums.... The two main front men for the group are DENNY HENSON and TOM KELLY they did all of the singing. I don't know what DENNY HENSON is up to these days but TOM KELLY is still in the industry singing back-up vocals on many artist CD projects. So enjoy this one it's the last from a great sounding band from the country rock days of the 70's...they truly were GOLD!

5 out of 5 stars LUCK HAS ARRIVED!.......2001-07-25

I have been waiting patiently for this follow-up to the debut album, as my memory reminded me how much better the songwriting had been than "Fools Gold," a great record in its own right. I may be 47, but my memory still serves me well. After putting it on and cranking it up, a big smile came across my face, for two reasons. One, the songs still hold up (even though my wife calls it impossibly retro), and the re-mastering is done much better than the first, with the bass now a more punched up member of the mix. From "Sweet Country Air" to "Gypsy Brew" to "Captain," anybody who enjoys the country rock genre would highly enjoy this record. I stick by the 5 stars, but if I had a complaint, it would be the over-production of a few numbers, but better that than under produced. Just having David Foster on keyboards insures a certain amount of polish to the overall sound. All in all, a very satisfying album, one that will get played as much today as it was 25 years ago!!

I've been waiting for this CD for years and it's finally here. Where else can you find a collection of Kalmar and Ruby songs? If you love the movie, you'll love the soundtrack. As with all Rhino soundtracks, both the audio, art work, and liner notes quality is great. Buy it before all 2500 copies are taken...

5 out of 5 stars beautiful old time music.......2004-07-13

there are so many great songs sung by beautiful women-Gale robbins singing I love you so much, Arleen doll on All alone Monday, but the best is the enchanting unforgettable Thinking of you, sung by Vera Ellen, the best dancing lady ever on the screen. Sad we cant see Miss Ellen dance to the song but the wonderful scene will live in your memory. A very nice record,Also Miss Debby Reynolds does a very nice imitation of Hellen Kane on I wanna be loved by yo.
