Red-Blooded, and no holds barred!.......2001-01-12

I really wanted some kind of introduction to Mussorgsky's best on one CD, and this release here has more than met my needs. You just can't lose with a rock solid conductor like Ormandy on the podium. There's no self-conscious, post-modern restraint in these interpretations, and the selections are very generous too. Night on Bald Mountain is every bit as hell-fired and rousing as it should be, while Pictures glows with humor, variety, and panache. There is no doubt in my mind that Mussorgsky was a wild man, and Ormandy captures the breakneck danger of his music perfectly. There are some nice fillers too. I had heard the Prelude to Khovanshchina and the dances from Borodin's Prince Igor somewhere before, but I never knew what it was I was hearing. I'm glad I have them now, and you'll be too.

Great Pianist, Poor Piano.......2002-07-07

A rare live solo session from 1971 recorded in London. Ewell was still a strong performer at this time (as the Chiaroscuro solo sessions demonstrate), and offers a fairly typical selection from his repertoire - a mixture of originals, standards and the odd stride classic, with only material by Jelly Roll Morton missing. Ewell starts rather creakily with a slightly tentative version of the stride barnstormer "When Dreams Come True" (see versions by James P. Johnson, Donald Lambert or Dick Wellstood for more vigorous treatments), but soon warms up, particularly on medium tempo numbers such as "Old Fashioned Love" and "Blue Turning Grey Over You".

The main flaw with this album is the piano. As with so many jazz venues, the 100 Club instrument at this point was poorly tuned and had a thin tone which dulls some of the impact of Ewell's style of playing. The track listing is also incorrect, with a brief spoken introduction not listed and every subsequent track therefore one number behind that listed.

Some of Ewell's finest solo is not yet available on CD: until then, this CD is an acceptable substitute. However, if you are new to Ewell, buy one of the Good Time Jazz solo / trio / quartet CDs first!

Frenzy is one of the best and most influential Psycho/Neo-Rockabilly bands of the 1980's. This is the band's 4rth album, and here are the tracks from their first 3 albums.
I heard that this live album from 1987 is actually a "studio" product. This is one of the jokes that Psychobilly fans like very much. Frenzy was a superb live band in the 80's, and this album was released when the band was on the top!
