Editorial Reviews
The tenor sax giant had signed with another label when he embarked on this one-off date for Blue Note, an excursion that paid off with an enduring modern jazz masterpiece. Boasting volley after volley of smart soloing and intuitively swinging rhythm work, Blue Train is a joy, from the coolly precise ensemble entry on the opening title piece through the set's balance of elegant hard bop conversations and smooth downshifts into ballads. John Coltrane wrote four originals for the date, all of them now regarded as standards, and assembled a rhythm section including pianist Kenny Drew, Miles Davis's rhythm section of bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones, and trumpeter Lee Morgan and trombonist Curtis Fuller, both recent Blue Note recruits. Coltrane's signature sound, now fully developed but still hewing more to familiar blues and chromatic harmonies than his later modalities, is confident and expansive, and his partners respond vividly throughout. --Sam Sutherland

Amazon.com essential recording
Blue Train is one of those ineffable sound recordings that actually seems to capture a moment of perfect artistry. Coltrane was in the midst of a Prestige recording contract but was able to honor a previous commitment to Blue Note and release this one album. With four Coltrane originals, including the haunting theme of the title track, and one standard, this recording showed Coltrane was becoming the complete package: player, composer, and bandleader. What distinguishes this session from the Prestige dates of the same time is the easy, relaxed, and obviously well-rehearsed playing of the group, and the usual masterful recording by Rudy van Gelder. This enhanced CD-ROM also features two alternate takes. The well-designed multimedia elements, including musician interviews and pictures from the famous van Gelder studio, round this stellar session into an experience that informs and delights over and over. --Michael MonhartCustomer Reviews:

"Trane at his best. Lee Morgan not far behind........2006-11-04
In the liner notes is a quote from a jazz musician-I forget who- who claimed that "'Trane made those other guys(the sidemen)look ridiculous. Like amateurs..." or something to that affect. The only thing ridiculous is that quote from my perspective. Lee Morgan plays with a fire and dexterity far beyond his 19 years. He doesn't allow himself to get caught up in a note-burning contest with Coltrane, but instead follows his own inner vision and plays beautifully. His understated opening salvo on the title cut is classic. 'Trane has just finished a fast, long and amazing solo and instead of trying to match it's intensity(an impossible task)Morgan goes for the less-is-more approach, softly hitting a few notes and stepping away from the mic for a pause. Then he repeats. If he didn't have the respect for JC that I know he had I would almost daresay that he was making fun of 'Trane's excess!
The rest of the players acquit themselves admirably as well. An essential album.
This album got me into Jazz.......2006-07-21
Everything about this album is perfect. I don't think there is a jazz ensemble that can play as tightly together as the sextet on this album. The solos are exciting, driving, interesting and innovative. There are little things that the rhythm section and the horns do as backgrounds behind the soloist. The arrangements on here are great for a jazz sextet, and really gives the group a great big sound.
This album was the culmination of Coltrane's career as a saxophonist. Each musician on here is the best at what they do. This is the album which defines what post-bop really is. If you are a jazz musician, this is the standard that you should try to attain. I don't think there will ever be a saxophonist as influential as John Coltrane.

Exquisite .......2007-02-19
Accompanying Coltrane on this album was a very young Lee Morgan on trumpet, Kenny Drew on keys, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Philly Joe Jones on drums and the one and only Paul Chambers on bass. While this is not the Coltrane one finds on his landmark "A Love Supreme", it does demonstrate his superiority among other saxophonists of this time. An altogether pleasant outing here that is sure to delight newcomers to this man; "Blue Train" should be one of the first few albums by this Coltrane listeners should buy. I know this RVG edition gets plenty of use in this household.
Worth the Press it Receives.......2006-02-06
Trane has an interesting band on this disc, consisting of veterans Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones, as well as the additions of Kenny Drew (piano), Curtis Fuller (trombone), and Lee Morgan (trumpet). Except for Morgan, the rest of the group just backs Trane up. He's no Miles Davis, but I'll take him before somone like Freddie Hubbard any day of the week.
BLUE TRAIN was Coltrane's first breakthrough release. He had already played with Miles on some earlier Prestige recordings like 'Workin,' 'Cookin,' 'Relaxin,' and 'Steamin.' With Miles, he began an evolution that would end a decade later with his most avant-garde recordings. In 1957, Coltrane was battling his addiction to heroin, and it is also around this time that Trane was beginning to develop his lyricism that was formulated in his stints with Thelonius Monk at the Five Spot. While the music here is not 'challenging' by any means, the intensity of Trane's work here shows the listener an element of revolutionary playing. We can hear that Trane was searching for a way to combine all his ideas into some type of signature sound which he would not fully recognize until A LOVE SUPREME. What really strikes me the most is Trane's tone and intensity on this album, which I also hear on 1958's SOULTRANE. This is most evident on the track 'I'm Old Fashioned' as well as the title track. For a more upbeat side to the music, tracks like 'Locomotion' and 'Lazy Bird' feature highlights from Kenny Drew and Philly Joe Jones, respectively.
It doesn't really matter which 'version' of BLUE TRAIN you purchase...just make sure you own it.
The ultimate ultimate?.......2004-08-16

Awesome Set!.......2007-07-01
Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03
Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11
Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).
Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".
It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.
But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.
Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22
Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31
However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.
However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.
Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

Coltrane's only Blue Note Album on SACD! .......2005-03-14
Yes, the SACD DOES sound better than the CD (unless I am imagining things, which is entirely possible), but for me, the Vinyl wins hands down. Even though it has a few clicks and pops, I would rather hear the vinyl version any day.
I have done A-B-C comparisons, but have not as yet performed a double-blind ABX test so maybe I am imagining the difference, but who cares - the LP is more fun anyway !
Worth The Upgrade.......2004-01-01
While I can't speak for the recent RVG Series re-issue, I can say that this version sounds considerably better than the 1996 re-issue, "The Ultimate Blue Train" - bass is richer, drums crisper and over-all live feel of the recording is unprecendented. If are considering buying the RVG remaster, why not spend a few dollars more and get this Hybrid SACD since it plays in both Super Audio and regulars CD players. It is worth the investment.

One would be hard-pressed to find a band more perfectly symbolic of the good-times politics-be-damned esprit de cannabis that symbolized a good chunk of 70's rock. While the Beach Boys were busy becoming an anachronism, the Doobs effectively took their mantle, fusing an array of musical Americana--be it blues, country, folk, or gospel (they saved jazz and funk for their Michael McDonald-fronted incarnation)--into a remarkably popular string of albums and radio hits by simply asking not much more of us than to "Listen to the Music." And if they didn't get much more controversial than to declare "Jesus Is Just Alright," well, that was kind of the point. This Rhino anthology is typically exhaustive. All the familiar radio hits are here, as well as a good sampling of deep catalog from the band's various line-ups, not to mention a few standout Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons solo outings. Hardcore Doobie Bros. fans should be especially pleased by the fourth disc, which contains a wealth of outtakes and demos from the band's early '70s and '80s prime. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
Nice box set for the critical underdogs of rock.......2006-07-05
Sound quality is exceptional with a crisp detailed sound not heard before. Since fans will probably be familair with the bulk of the tracks here I'm only going to focus on the fourth disc with the bonus tracks. We get a number of good demos including Pat Simmons' "Daughters of the Sea","Four Days Gone", "Pat's Song"; Tom Johnston's "Osborne" (an early version of "Long Train Runnin'), "Lovin' My Way Back Home", "Peace in the Valley" all of which are strong tunes. "Bluejay" is also quite good and with "Peace in the Valley" one of the highlights here. It's a pity these songs never showed up on an album before now. "Armadillo Death Chang" is interesting as well--Johnston appears to have had a problem with song titles much like George Harrison in many cases as the title has absolutely nothing to do with this rockin' tune.
"Outside of Barstow" is a demo with just Johnston and his guitar and, again, is a terrific little song that should have been revisited. "Spiel" is a John Hartman composition (the only solo composing credit the drummer received)that's really more of a joke track. I haven't listened to "Olana" in a while but this studio version of the Michael McDonald track is better than the live version from the 1983 final tour recording.
The rest of the material was released in one form or another and these are either demos or alternate versions of the final tracks. We also get demos for "Sweet Maxine", "Shuffle" two demos from Michael McDonald "Takin' It To The Streets", "We Would Sail Away" both of which are strong demos. A Live version of "Jesus is Just Alright" from the live album sessions in 1982.
The booklet has lots of rare photos, interviews and features the band discussing the changes over the years. If you purchased the most recent greatest hits release (2001)the text and photos from the booklet are the same. I was disappointed that there wasn't a DVD (much like the recent Pretenders set) as these guys in their prime were a powerhouse on stage. The four stars reflects the fact that the there could have been more previously unreleased material. I was hoping that the four tracks that Tom Johnston completed for "Livin' On The Fault Line" but withdrawn from the album would have been included but no such luck.
Great for work..........2006-01-31
Missing track.......2005-03-04
A box full of good stuff.......2004-03-19
As I said a fourth disc is included which is the true gem of the album which includes rare cuts, demos and unreleased songs mostly from the groups beginings. Many are recorded complete with mistakes and talk from a crew or band member. Others are real early concept songs for later albums. One noteworthy cut is Sweet Maxine without the piano playing! The crown jewel on the disc is the studio produced song OLANA which is a song that I think could have really spiced up the McDonald years, along with others like it. The only other way to get this baby is a live version on the imported farewell concert disc. ARMADILLO DEATH CHANT is another great one. Other note, the BLUE JAY track is different then the one on the elusive EXCITEMENT import disc.
Sadly there are a few marks off but not enough to change my opinion in saying that this is a fantastic collection, but here they are anyway.
1 No DAUGHTERS OF THE SEA on the fisrt disc, the demo that you get with the box is nice, but this is one of my favorite songs and it takes me to a better place when I hear it.
2 No HOW DOES THE FOOL SURVIVE on disc 3, Jeff Baxter's minute and a half guiter solo at the end is one of the best I've ever heard.
3 No RIO on disc 2. Another good one.
4 No inclusions of the 87 reunion concert in which EVERY band member (sans the original bass player) participated in. That would have been sweet to hear.
Most of those complaints are trivial since NO boxed set ever gets all of what somebody wants. It's sadly give and take. The rest of the set is awesome and even if you already have all of the albums, and the fourth disc is warrant enough to purchase. Great set. Too bad there probably won't be another

For the lightness and lilt, one need look no farther than Herbert von Karajan's New Year's Day 1987 offering with the Vienna Philharmonic. Playing to the manner born, the Viennese are on their very best behavior for Karajan and summon every last nuance out of the music. Kathleen Battle sings the Voices of Spring exquisitely, and every one of the performances vibrates with life. --Ted LibbeyCustomer Reviews:
Still A Splendid New Year's Concert Recording from the Wiener Philharmoniker and Herbert von Karajan.......2007-04-11
A great and moving valedictory.......2007-02-16
Musically the high point is a ravishing Voices of Spring sung by Kathleen Battle in her most magical style. Look to other Karajan recordings for more sparkle and zest; look to this one for a once-in-a-lifetime event.
The best Strauss collection on CD.......2001-06-02
Every work is marvellously conducted, played, and recorded. Highlights include the wonderful Fledermaus Overture, Spharenklange (Music of the Spheres), and Fruhlingsstimmen (Voices of Spring, with Kathleen Battle in superb voice). As for the Blue Danube, has it ever been played more magically than on this record?
The only snag is the absence of any notes in the fold out booklet.
Missing Battle? :-(.......2000-02-29
