Editorial Reviews
As learned from the broad-based popularity of his previous albums, people turn to saxophonist Boney James to do one thing: create sultry audio backdrops well suited for mingling, small talk, and romantic notions. James, rotating between tenor, soprano, and alto saxophones, faithfully delivers more of those goods on this, his sixth album. The mood sustained throughout all nine tracks (42-plus minutes runtime) is urbane, low-key, and cue-ball smooth. Chelle Davis provides breathy background vocals on the slow-grooving opening track, "Are You Ready?" and R&B crooners Shai take a more foreground role on the sweetly disarming "I'll Always Love You." Perhaps the album's most attractive cut is the slow urban crawl of "Boneyizm," with subdued interplay between James's tenor sax and Rick Braun's flügelhorn. Nothing shrill, outrageous, new, or significant awaits here, simply an engaging and pleasant listen. --Terry Wood

After 16 years in the pop diva business, Kylie Minogue doesn't bother reinventing herself. Maybe that's why Body Language sounds so effortlessly appealing. Confidence permeates the record's savvy mix of modern and retro, implanting slinky tunes like "Slow" into your brain's guilty pleasure section. Aided greatly by producer Kurtis Mantronik's resourceful touch, sparse electroclash rhythms blend easily with Minogue's shrewd pop sense, milking it for maximum catchiness. True, Kylie's barely-there voice remains a weak spot, and her attempt at rap on "Secret (Take You Home)" doesn't quite work (though it's better than you might think). More often, those helium tones are put to effective use; her sighing vocal on "Chocolate" is pure, sweet decadence. Prince himself might be a little envious of how well Mantronik lays down the 1999-style electro-funk, as tracks like "Still Standing" glide along on computer soul and the singer's practiced tease. And therein lies Body Language's most impressive feat: It makes Minogue's plastic sex appeal sound not just like the most natural thing in the world, but like an honest-to-God artistic statement. --Matthew CookeCustomer Reviews:

Sexy and lush.......2007-02-20
So, here comes "Body Language", Kylie's last studio album. The first thing you notice is that it's much more retro - on the cover, Kylie is being sexy in that old-fashioned way, where it's not about how much you expose, than HOW you expose it. Wow, what a way to age! And the songs are the same way - although they are undoubtedly sexy, she merely suggests her sexiness instead of talking about how she does it (here that, Britney?).
The album opens with the minimal "Slow", which are essentially clusters of beats and hooks linked by Kylie's whisper. It is catchy and a great opening. From then on, it goes through a number of songs which all stand for themselves as great tracks (especially "Secret (Take You Home)" and "Promises", which are both retro and modern at the same time). "Red Blooded Woman" is very hip and upbeat and "Chocolate" might as well be the best track, capturing the lush feel of chocolate melting in one's mouth, and just like the chocolate, the song melts in a sexiest way possible. "Someday" is similar, very calm and lullaby-ish, as it suggests the end of the album. There are also two bonus tracks, "Cruise Control" and "You Make Me Feel", which are both great.
Snap-snap for Kylie Minogue. She has achieved stardom, and is now confident enough in herself to release a very moderate, yet accomplished album. It's the same old Kylie, and she's not going anywhere. "Body Language" proves it.

This trio of recent works by Salonen suggests that he's one of the most interesting composers on today's scene. All three share the virtues of his highly individual style, modernistic and accessible. Foreign Bodies is in three parts and is concerned with the unity of music and the body. It opens with a machine-tooled movement of driving rhythms and color-drenched orchestration. The second is more relaxed, with subtle washes of color, and the finale, titled "Dance," returns to rhythm as a motivating force, albeit with a fascinating twittering woodwind-led climax. Wing on Wing's title derives from a sailing term but also might describe the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, home of the city's Philharmonic, for which it was written. It's an adventurous work featuring a pair of coloratura sopranos singing wordlessly, human instruments part of an orchestral fabric that also incorporates a manipulated tape of architect Frank Gehry's voice and another of a fish whose call is seamlessly incorporated into the texture. Insomnia begins with a brief dreamlike passage, the bulk of the piece a succession of restless, often obsessive episodes; some threatening, others frantically joyful, but always constantly engrossing and punctuated by virtuoso solos from the orchestra. A fascinating disc that should be heard. --Dan DavisCustomer Reviews:
Wing on Wing Doesn't Fly.......2007-06-27
The music on this CD, however, was not to my liking. It was a little too modern for me and I tried listening to it again the next day but came away with the same feeling.
I also think that the sound was tinny and while there was nothing wrong with the disc the orchestra did not sound complete despite Salonen's solid direction.
I'm glad I have it in my collection but it's not for everyone and unfortunately I'm one of those persons.
This is absolutely great music........2006-01-08
To a beginner of contemporary Classical Music, it may take time, but for the experienced, one should never hesitate to buy the album. The music is simply dazzling, if not wierd or even psychedelic. "Wing on Wing", featuring two coloratura sopranos, is especially worth listening. Good way to witness "Art Music" beyond the new millenium.
Simply great!.......2005-04-04
Very accessible new music.......2005-03-10
If you respond to this music as I have, then try his earlier CD titled "LA Variations". This CD, "Wing on Wing" is recommeded without reservation. Salonen is an important composer/conductor of our time.
Esi-Pekki's World.......2005-02-16
Having said that, I find this music very very attractive, at times a bit nervous, yet always innovative and interesting, especially in terms of orchestration and color. Salonen is a master of orchestration. Wing-on-Wing is a true highlight to me, and can stand right side by side with his earlier opus magnum, LA Variations. Especially the two sopranos shine, and the 'duets' they perform against the orchestra are truly stunning.
Highly recommended.
PS: When does he make his next recording with the LA Phil?

What a voice!.......2004-11-26
Maurice Starr (the man behind NKOTB) took her under his wing and boy am I glad he did. Though she pretty much can be considered a "no-hit" wonder, she has a gift that can put the afore mentioned 80s teen queens to shame...her voice! This girl can sing!
BODY LANGUAGE is her sophmore effort and was produced in part by Maurice Starr, Deborah Gibson and Kiki Almaguer (??)/Héctor García (two ex-Miami Sound Machine members). The material itself does not differ that much from the other teen pop of the day, but I can say this enough, the voice that came out of this 16 year old was jaw-dropping. Imagine a Toni Braxton type voice coming out of this tiny girl. The first single "Got To Tell Me Something" peaked at #60 something, but another song got some airplay. That being the duet w/ ex-New Kid and Surreal Life alumni, Jordan Knight, "Angel of Love". I must admit the reason I actually bought this album in the first place was because my then obsessoin, Debbie Gibson, produced 2 tracks on this album. "Everytime We Say Goodbye" has to be one of my favorite songs of all time, of course it sounds very "Debbie" but Deborah only wishes she had a 1/4 of the power that comes of Ana's voice. Another example of this little lady's power comes via the ballad "Over and Over". Why she was not a star is beyond me. Life's not fair I guess. Since I am rambling, another noteworthy song is the title track (yes she had a "Body Langue" before Kylie).
So it's been nearly 14 years since the album was released. I always wondered what became of this girl w/ the booming voice. Turns out she's been reincarnated as Mia, a sexy Latin pop singer recording for Univision Records!!! There is a God! I'm glad she's been given a second chance, and that her voice has not gone to waste. For those of you just discovering Mia, I highly recommend checking out her previous teen pop fodder. Highly enjoyable.
