5 out of 5 stars A Songwriter's Journey.......2007-03-09

The thing I like the best about this album is that it ebbs and flows with an edgy sense of doom at any minute. Kind of like life. "I worry often. I live in terror of what life may have in store"(Nice Day). I hear what you're saying Womack and I'm glad you've got the guts to lay it on the line. A Cockroach After the Bomb rants and rocks and just keeps spewing out confessional truths until there's nothing left to say except "I'll go to my grave knowing I took me a chance". Damn straight Womack- you did take a chance. You could of given up a few years ago when things went black, but you found strength in your family, God, and music. The skinny white boy can still lay down a groove too- check out Flourescent Light Blues(nice guitar solo). Good production by John Deaderick. Well mixed record with fine backing musicians who only play to complement the messages in the songs. Rock on TW.

Life giving you the blues?Take a dose of Tommy Womack,s "There I said it."One Saturday driving between the Post Office and the Bank I happened to hear " alpha male and the canine mystery blood," on the X.I was hooked. I aquired the cd and had one of the best afternoons in recent years listening to the tunes and reading the liner notes,(best I,ve ever read.)My wife and I were reduced to tears of laughter. Thanks for the catharsis,Tommy. We have Closure.

buy this disc if you think americans are smart, deep, happy, sad, and funny. Womack is. His gift is worth the price of admission.

5 out of 5 stars Call the engravers now - Womack flat out nails the best album of 2007! .......2007-02-27

I cried, I laughed, I winced, I sang along and I got my socks rocked off! Then I looked in the mirror and realized that these songs hit awful close to home. The album is about Womack finding himself facing a new post-rock & roll world after forty as a family man trying to make ends meet. But the words still find a way to reach just about everyone staring down the "other side of the hill" and wondering just what the heck you do after pouring more than half your life in to something only to find out it didn't quite work out as planned.

The title song finds Tommy proclaiming "I'm never gonna be a rock star..." then admitting it is time to move on maybe "...There I Said It". Ironically enough that admission, and the aftermath of opening the floodgates and letting loose a torrent of truthfulness in song rarely heard in this day and age, may be the catalyst to finally propel Womack to rock star status!

At the least, you won't be disappointed in this album. For many though this album will be a downright cathartic experience!

For fans of fellow Nervous Wrecks Todd Snider and Will Kimbrough as well as the likes of Hayes Carll, Bobby Bare Jr, John Prine, Keith Sykes, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Paul Thorn and more.

5 out of 5 stars Promises to be the Best of 2007.......2007-02-26

Its early in the year, but this promises to be the album of the year, and perhaps the decade. Up there with the best of Steve Earle, John Prine or Todd Snider, but with a haunting authenticity worthy of Kevin Gordon or Ray Wylie Hubbard. Buy it! Buy one for every real friend you have! Hug your children/dog/cat, your wife/husband/partner, and start thanking your lucky stars for your own mis-spent youth.

2 out of 5 stars Cedar Dream Songs.......2006-10-09

I fell in love with Bill Miller with such albums as The Art of Survival and Reservation Road. The songs in these albums were unique and were colored with Bill Miller's Indian heritage. One of them has a really wonderful Indian flute instrumental, Wind Spirit. Each time, I looked forwarded to new releases from Bill. Then, one day it seemed that he felt guilty that he was denying his 'traditional' Indian heritage. From then on his albums, like this one, sounded like every other Native Indian recording. Sigh!!! The later albums are so ho hum. Bill, please go back to songs like Reservation Road, Ordinary Man and Tumbleweed. These songs and others on the other two albums I mentioned above, were drawn from your Native Indian heritage and are so far above anything you are producing these days.

5 out of 5 stars Cedar Dreams.......2005-11-18

My favorite Native American flutes are cedar- especially Spanish Cedar. Pick up a cedar flute and feel how the wood feels in your hands. Blow on it and feel the cedar enter your nose, your lungs. Look at the flute and realize what Bill does with the pentatonic scale. Such simplicity, such eloquence, such genius.

I used to play a lot of his songs when I volunteered as a DJ at a tribal radio station. I liked to be in the studio singing with him, thinking of his words, his music, going out over the airwaves.

Bill distills experience and songs to their essence and shares his gift with us in the form of incredibly beautiful and soulful music. I am very grateful for that.

And really, pick up a flute and play it. There is no wrong note. There is playfulness and opening up to the music you have within you. Listening to this album is an excellent guide to what open heartedness and mastery sound like.

5 out of 5 stars This CD deserved the Grammy it won!.......2005-09-02

This CD is yet another side of an extremely talented musician, artist, poet. His ability to touch your soul with his music is second to none. I have had the pleasure of listening to his music since the 1970's, he is always improving and his music is never predictable. The sound quality of this CD is exceptional. Buying any of Bill's CD's will be a worthwhile investment for your music collection.

5 out of 5 stars Gets into your Spirit!.......2004-11-19

This album is full of music that gets inside you. In my opinion, this is Bill Millers best CD. This is not just flute music. The mix on this CD just works, almost putting you in a trance. I do not suggest you listen to this while driving!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful music.......2006-12-05

This is wonderful music. Often, music based solely on Bible verses can be kind of flat and repetitive. This music is enjoyable for me and my kids. I listen to it when my kids aren't around, and I can't say that about most children's music. My children have learned scripture and enjoy listening to this.

5 out of 5 stars Great Family Music.......2006-09-22

This is some of the best music there that is for the whole family. I have a 4 year old who loves this music and know of several teenagers who also love this music. This is a must buy for any parent who wants to be able to hide scripture in their child's heart. The music is up beat and not childish. Very fresh!

5 out of 5 stars Near-brilliant.......2007-02-16

In this CD Cedar performs in the standard trio format, with the exception of the first two tunes that feature Vincent Herring. The performances are flawless, and the emotions Cedar elicits will leave you breathless. He plays with a maturity that left me shaking my head in disbelief. He can take the simplest, corniest and cliche-ridden phrase, insert it in just the right place, and make it his own original and refreshing musical idea. He reharmonizes, tweaks rhythms, drops in little two-measure double-time phrases, and convolutes the melody - and yet, he keeps everything accessible. His interpretations push the boundaries of each tune, but he maintains enough structure and predictability to avoid slipping into ego-driven avant-garde land. The recording mix itself is crisp, clear, and balanced; the acoustic bass never sounds muffled or dominated by low-end hum, the drums are sharp and bright like someone snapping their fingers 6 inches from your ear. This is a fabulous CD that I highly, highly recommend.

New York Time
by:
Cobb, Jackson, McBride, Walton

Chesky Records is pleased to announce the release of New York Time, a new quartet recording featuring bassist Christian McBride, tenor saxophonist Javon Jackson, drummer Jimmy Cobb and pianist Cedar Walton. This Super Audio Compact Disc will be available September 26.

New York Time offers jazz fans a wonderful opportunity to hear two rising stars of the genre (McBride, Jackson) performing with two respected elders (Cobb, Walton). The past also meets the present in other exciting ways on this recording. The set is highlighted by several of Walton's original compositions and a cover of the legendary John Coltrane's "Naima." Meanwhile, McBride's acoustic bass talents are spotlighted on his self-written composition "Grove" (for trumpeter Roy Hargrove) and Jackson represents the new vanguard of jazz with his own tune titled "Notes in Three."

Chesky Records' world-renowned minimalist recording technique allowed the musicians to relax and the music to flow. "It's always nice when you're around friends. It's nice when it's a loose atmosphere and everyone is supporting everyone else," Jackson says. "Very rewarding music can come out of such impromptu situations."

New York Time is the third of seven titles to be released as part of The New York Sessions series. This new series features the greatest jazz musicians of today recorded with Chesky's state-of-the-art technology. It also aims to spotlight new artists who are creating fresh opportunities for the music. All New York Sessions titles will be released as aggressively priced hybrid SACDs. Each SACD title will have a CD-compatible layer, as well as high-definition stereo and multichannel versions for SACD players.

Volume 18 is the only one of the first 24 Dick's Picks to feature music from 1978, culling from two (maybe three) February dates in the Midwest. Following an artistic peak that lasted most of the 1970s, the band sounded more ragged and raucous in 1978 than they had during the previous few years, trading in some of their more textured, willowy tendencies for greater aggression and abandon. The centerpiece here is the half-hour "Scarlet"/"Fire" from the Cedar Falls, Iowa, show, which is followed soon after by an explosive "Other One" and emotional "Wharf Rat." Throughout, Garcia's guitar work is as adventurous and bold as ever, and though the band as a whole is beginning to fray a bit, it does serve to heighten the sense of adventure. --Marc Greilsamer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Rowdy! .......2007-02-10

Loud and festive! The boys came out smoking and wailed nicely. Good clean sound also.

5 out of 5 stars Disc Three changed my life forever........2006-12-13

Bad News and Good News

First, the bad news: I'm not a huge fan of the setlist. The Wheel, All over now, Playin'? Eh. Really Bland songs. Also, Jerry forgets a lot of the words. I can't believe he left out the entire last stanza of "Scarlet Begonias", which concludes the whole story. I grudgingly sing it myself every time I listen to it.

Now the good news.
The Scarlet>Fire saved my soul. I kid you not. I was an atheist my entire life and listening to this album's Scarlet>Fire (along with a bunch of other stuff in my life) somehow proved to me God. There cannot be such musical beauty in existence without Love from On High. I listened to it nearly every single day of July 06 and August 06. Cures all ills, the jamming alone, no words needed. Jesus loves Jerry.

Additionally, Eyes and Prophet are hot. Bertha's jam is beautiful. Truckin is not as good as in DP1, but is good for running & such because it is a heavy hitter. Wharf Rat is also a sweet, sweet closer.

In short, this album's Scarlet > Fire obliterates all the album's other flaws. You will not find a more soulful, entire-human-experience-summarizing 29 minutes as the DP 18 Scarlet > Fire.

Signed, Charles Payson Frederick

4 out of 5 stars Three very good performances.......2006-12-02

First of all, This release is NOT from two shows but rather three. The recording dates are 2/3,4&5/78. This is a pretty good collection of songs including most of the highlights from all three. Cold, Rain and Snow, Passenger, and Dupree's are standouts on the first disc. It's a shame they cut Ship Of Fools and the short drums segment off the second disc. Still, disc two is about as good as it gets. On disc three Scarlet -> Fire is one of the best ever and the Truckin' jam is just as great.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best picks... .......2006-10-07

1978 wasn't the strongest year for the Dead. Sure, everyone's heard about May 77, Europe 72, and 73-74. There's plenty of DP from those tours.

This collection taken from a few nights, and is as exciting as it gets. The scarlet->fire is one of the best, easily among my 2-3 favorites. But, all the other music is great too. And, in this collection, the shorter tunes are nicely done as well. I love the Cold Rain and Snow, and the Trickin' jam is a blast.

One of my favorite Dick's Picks.

5 out of 5 stars I can't stop listening to this!.......2006-05-20

Great collection. Personal faves (this week) are the solos on Bertha and, particularly, Brown Eyed Woman. Jerry's tone is stinging.

Superb 'Eyes' and Scarlet > Fire too.

This (along with Live Dead) is the one I play people who've never heard the band (i.e. 99% of the British public).

5 out of 5 stars Sophisticated, sensual darkness.......2007-04-09

As previous reviews show, this music isn't for everybody. But for those who appreciate its sinuous & slow erotic charge, it'll take you to mysterious places. Unlike the boringly blatant & plastic sexuality of a lot of contemporary hits, this is the real thing: the lush flow is in the mind as much as in the body, creating a fever dream that never ends while the music is playing & Jennifer Charles' rich, low, satiny voice is soothing, caressing, aching in the dark, calling to you ... "But it doesn't matter anyway, I'm on the wrong side of the water, oh won't you listen to the lady in the lake?" In a way, it isn't so much about sex as it is about the mood, the countless little details merging together, the emotional undercurrents ... both alluring & a little ominous ... there's really nothing else quite like it. Most highly recommended!

2 out of 5 stars eh.......2007-04-08

I didn't like this album, and barely listened to it. I don't know why...and wasn't particularly interested to figure out the reason or reasons.

5 out of 5 stars Darkly erotic...........2001-10-16

Well, all negativity from the others aside, I hated this album at first too. Too slow, too mellow, too offkey.... but then, oh, then.... I listened to it as I was falling asleep! In the dark, with your eyes closed, new realms are opened up to you! There's an amazing art behind the simplicity and the smoky vocals. This is NOT music to groove to or dance to or to jump around too.... it's romantic, curling up in a warm bed JAZZY music. It creates at atmosphere without being blunt about it, which is why many people miss the point I think - not being smacked in the face with the purpose... Despite being so calming and tranquil, it won't put you to sleep if you don't want it to. It's interesting enough musically to keep me entranced. Darkly erotic vibes throughout, and very thoughtful! ENJOY IT!

1 out of 5 stars Aptly titled.......2001-08-17

Granted I have cd's I've never heard arriving in my mailbox daily. Some I get, others pass me by. This is one where I misfired, for sure.

This is one dark as coal cd. Is it me or does this sound like mood music for dungeons? The singing is not at all mellifluous in any way whatsoever; it is rather a droning monotone (think the female equivalent if Howard Cosell took up music), the piano chops and overall atmosphere of the record is moodier than I can stand. I like moody when it's good (David Sylvian's "Secrets of the Beehive").

I'll give them credit for one thing, they've managed a classy name for themselves. Weren't the Elysian Fields where ancient Romans thought you went when you died? Unfortunately, their name is the only thing of value I can divine.

5 out of 5 stars Elysian Fields Forever.......2001-06-13

Whoa, can I have a J please? As in Jealousy! That's what it sounds like D cluck cluck cluck has a severe case of. Take some xanax and call me in the morning. Sounds like you're trying to promote your own band and your trying to do it at the expense of Elysian Fields. Hoping to attract the EF audience? Anyway, this forum isn't for jealous rants and slagging, it's for thought-out reviews by hopefully someone who has something constructive and intelligent to say. Anyway, I first had their latest cd "queen of the meadow", and loved it to death. Great songs, mood, depth. The lyrics are incredibly poetic. The work of Lautremont comes to mind. Quality of the voice, music, words evoking surrealism- Blake, Ernst.. So I searched for anything else they put out and have been devouring it all. "Bleed your Cedar" is a beautiful cd. It seems a little bit more innocent than their latest one, but it is every bit as good. Especially love the song 'fountains on fire' where the piano is like a storm building, and Jennifer's voice soars, especially on these high notes. There is a great slide guitar solo on one of the songs too. This band is very deep, so don't let that persons sour grapes spoil it for you. If you like beautiful melodies, stellar musiacianship, poetic lyrics, ala Nick Cave, then, you'll probably like this stuff. It's not kiddie stuff!

Cedar Walton has been there and played with the jazz pantheon. Yet, in spite of his great body of work-- both as sideman and leader-- he remains one of the most under-rated jazz giants of the past 50 years. This CD once again proves why Mr. Walton is so deserving of praise and admiration-- his sense of taste, timing, swing and versatility are all evidenced on this wonderful album. Highly recommended.

Though they receive equal billing, Ian Shaw and Cedar Walton are not equal partners here in the way that Cassandra Wilson and Jacky Terrasson were on Rendezvous. There are no instrumentals without Shaw, no Walton originals; the listing seems more a nod to the veteran jazzman's seniority and talent. Other than an extended solo on "Last Night When We Were Young," Walton functions here as an accompanist (along with saxophonist Iain Bellamy and bassist David Williams). That said, Shaw is an interesting vocalist. One easily hears his influences--Mel Torme, Tony Bennett, and in a swinging bass and vocal arrangement of "I Thought About You," Sarah Vaughan. Shaw's influences, though, are filtered through a gauze of British soul. It is especially evident in blues tunes like "Standing in the Dark" and "No One Ever Tells You," in which Shaw occasionally evokes the young Steve Winwood back when the latter sounded frighteningly like Ray Charles. But more often Shaw's vocal timbre evokes the power and passion of fellow Welshman Tom Jones. This is by no means a criticism--Jones has a terrific voice and tons of soul. Shaw, meanwhile, exhibits none of Jones's Vegas mannerisms or dubious choices of material. Still, with all his jazz-singer intentions and credentials, In a New York Minute contains enough examples of modern R&B vocal histrionics to make one wonder whether Ian Shaw is a soul singer performing jazz or an interesting new hybrid. Time will tell. --Michael Ross

4 out of 5 stars Jazz prowess wrapped in an English accent.......2006-10-04

For listeners enamored of classic jazz collaborations between pianists and vocalists--Cassandra Wilson/Jacky Terrasson's Rendezvous and Janis Siegel/Fred Hersch's Shortstories come to mind--here's a worthy addition to the canon, courtesy of the UK singer Ian Shaw and the American virtuoso Cedar Walton. Be warned though: the album's a bit of a cheat. Shaw and Walton are the frontmen, but they aren't the only musicians on this 1998 effort; the sparse, laid-back arrangements are occasionally sweetened by David William's bass and the agile saxophonist Iain Ballamy.
Mr. Walton is a sensitive accompanist (the pairing pays off especially in the dynamic opener and the honky-tonkish Standing in the Dark) but this is Mr. Shaw's show. Listening to the scat figures in the title cut, it's tempting to compare him to Mel Torme (both have that same fuzzy tenor sound) but Shaw is very much his own vocalist--one only has to absorb the stream-of-conscious syncopations of Joni Mitchell's Furry Sings the Blues or the soul-shouted precision of Grandma's Hands to hear uncommon versatility wrapped in musical ideas at once primal and modern.
The CD's two standouts are songs so familiar they'd risk becoming glaring folly in lesser hands. But Shaw makes Wouldn't It Be Loverly (from the musical My Fair Lady) a wistful, almost Dickensian plea of a man who's come to recognize, and covet the simpler solaces of life. Equally heartbreaking is his take on Burt Bachrach's Alfie, a song from which Shaw wrings every yearning drop of self-questioning. These renditions reveal a vocalist blessed with elegant restraint, and an actor unafraid to lay his emotions bare. In a New York Minute is everything you'd hope for in a jazz album, but Mr. Shaw's gifts transcend genre labels. However he's pegged one thing's clear--this is a singer for all seasons.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant In Every Respect.......2002-12-11

Bravo to whoever decided to pair Ian Shaw and Cedar Walton.

Everything on this CD -- from the choice of songs, the players, the interpretations, the overall vibe -- is purely magical.

Singers like Ian Shaw represent the future of jazz if we can only allow ourselves to embrace it.

He respects tradition, but doesn't pander. He sings standards as they should be sung -- as vibrant new material, not shopworn standbys. He's also able to hear the jazz in Joni Mitchell, Burt Bacharach, and Bill Withers.

In a live setting, he's a great performer. I caught him one rainy night in Greenwich Village at Fez. I'd never heard of him before, and only went because the New York Times suggested it.

He was completely captivating with only a pianist as his accompaniment.

Pick up this CD, and pick up the rest of Ian's work -- especially Soho Stories. You'll fall in love in a New York Minute.

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS NOW!.......2000-07-16

This CD has got it all - breathtaking musicianship, heart-stopping risk, tenderness of tone. That Ian Shaw is not more famous as a great jazz/soul/blues vocalist is a crime.

5 out of 5 stars Ian 's magic.......2000-06-09

As usual, this enormously underrated singer delivered a great album. There's magic in Mr. Shaw voice, a combination of soul, blues, gospel roots mixed with an extraordinary jazz sensibility that gives me the chill: pick just any of his cd, you'll be surprised how a brit white singer can be so undoubtely, deeply black in his musical approach. A pity there's no trace on line of one of his first efforts, the beautiful acoustic "Lazy blue eyes", where he sings with Catol Grimes: his rendition of "In a sentimental mood" is gorgeous and that it's not an easy song to perform, particularly by a male singer. In this latest cd with the great Cedar Walton on piano Ian steals the show with an intense "Standing in the dark", a sublime "Alfie", a vibrant "No one ever tells you" and a NancyWilsonish "I thought about you". On my opinion, the masterpiece here is the tender "Wouldn't it be lovely", to listen to while sitting in your car , waiting on a queue in a rainy day.... Keep on doing it Ian, you know what's singing is about!
