5 out of 5 stars Excellent world roots music.......1999-06-15

This newest release from RPO helps establish them as one of the most important bands in the midwest. They move effortlessly from from beautiful world music covers like El Pescador to originals like Enchanted Reptile Palace. This CD is a wonderful recording from a great band and confirms they are in a class by themselves.

This was a great album. I came across it after seeing the movie Skin Deep which featured Falling Out of Love. Great song and I decided to go locate the CD. Amazingly the whole thing was great. Just fantastic good music with each song high quality and enjoyable.

There are very few albums that I can listen to all the way through - I've always been a 'mix maker' from back in the cassette days to CDs and digital music now. I constantly scan the radio stations when I drive. Well, this is one of the very few albums that I can put in and listen to all the way through without any desire to skip around. High constant quality, nice arrangement - like I alluded to in the review title 'highly overlooked'. No idea how it happened but this disc is a treasure and I'll be buying it again as mine is almost too scratched to listen to now.

5 out of 5 stars !!!!! A Maestro !!!!!!.......2005-09-02

I have all of Ray's CDs and I still think that this is his
best hands down; this CD has so many facets, so many styles
like Latin Jazz (Emergency Exit), Funk (Werewolf, Boomerang), Brazilian Jazz (Samba Alegre), and he manages to keep
it tight, so fresh and inventive.
This is what Casiopea would sound if they were Latinos.......

5 out of 5 stars Year Of The Iguana .......2004-08-27

Starting off with the definitive version and rock n roll classic "I got a right" Year of the Iguana is a ferocious mix of lost vocals and buzzing guitars. "Head on" is next and even though Iggy is almost totally lost in the mix, it is made up for by James Williamson's powerful guitar. Here is a great version of "Joanna" and then comes the version of "Death trip" that you wish was on "RAW POWER" complete with crucial guitar solos whose newness seems to blast out of your speakers from seemingly no where. "Rubber legs" and "Wild love" would lead one to believe that if there was a fourth Stooges album it would surpass "RAW POWER" in rawness and greatness. Then we slow down for a spot on live version of "Open up and bleed." "Gimmie some skin" with it's fun lyrics and powerful rhythm would have also been a great inclusion for a fourth album. The album ends with a raw mix of "Raw power" that blows the album version even now (Iggy's mix) out of the water. For Williamson's guitar playing alone this is an essential piece of the Stooges rock n roll. The year of the iguana is in fact a very fine year.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best 'unofficial' Stooges releases.......2003-12-20

Delving into the market of the unofficial Stooges releases is without doubt a very daunting and confusing task initially. There are a whole heap of Stooges albums out there with unreleased material, a lot of questionable quality. This is without doubt one of the better unofficial Stooges albums you will find. The tapes that BOMP! own consist of these four groups: 1972 pre-Raw Power demos, 1972 Raw Power sessions, 1973 tour rehearsals or 1973-74 live shows. All of the songs you hear on this and every other Stooges cd (not counting the 3 studio albums of course) come from one of these groups (except for the Funhouse sessions boxset).

Easily the best thing about this cd, and the one thing that makes it a great 4th purchase, is the fact that you're getting 3 mastered songs of commercial cd quality (I Got a Right, Scene of the Crime, Johanna). I Got a Right comes from the pre-RP demos and would've been on a 3rd Elektra album, and it definitely holds its own against any other Stooges song out there. Scene of the Crime was a song rejected from Raw Power and Johanna turned into a solo Iggy song later on (see Kill City).

The rest of this album comprises of one live recording and the rest are studio sessions/rehearsals. 'Open Up and Bleed' is the live track, captured here during one of their very final shows in Detroit. Witness the abuse Iggy hurls at the crowd as he slows down the song to exchange insults with the savage crowd. It's a great song however admittedly the version here isn't the best one you'll find, go elsewhere for that. But it's a great taste of the band in a live setting and what you'll find on the Metallic k.o. cds.

A few of the studio rehearsals are songs that were performed on the tour following Raw Power's release however never properly laid down in the studio. Thank god someone in the studio those days hit the record button and put these on tape! Songs like 'Till the End of the Night', which is a 6+ minute ballad, were never explored fully and make you wonder what the band would've turned into had they fulfilled their contract for another album with Bowie's company. Tracks like the one mentioned, Rubber Legs, Johanna Head On & Wild Love suggest that James Williamson was pushing the band back to a more conventional direction (though I guess anything would be a more conventional direction after Raw Power).

There are, in my opinion, a couple of tracks here that you'll want to skip and these are the two songs that also appear on Raw Power (Death Trip & Raw Power). Inferior quality (Raw Power
is the worst song on the cd in terms of sound quality) and versions of the song that are very similar to the finished versions. Unless you are a complete Stooges fanatic you'll get nothing out of these versions. If you want to hear a different version of Raw Power see the version on Studio Sessions featuring backing vocals. One more complaint is the absense of arguably the most known unreleased song 'I'm Sick of You'.

Overall this is a great portrait of what the band were and what they could've become. You get a number of great mastered tracks and this for me is what puts it above Studio Sessions (which
is also decent). Any Stooges fan who isn't incredibly fickle about sound quality will enjoy this - the live track is decent sound quality and the studio outtakes are very listenable. After getting the 3 studio albums I highly recommend getting this.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good sample pac...but not the best versions........2000-10-28

I'm still giving four cause its the stooges and the version of Head on is great and there are some songs I hadn't heard on it like Gimme Some Skin. The main reason I'm writing this review is to disagree with what "somebody who cares" said about this being a great album if you have all three studio recordings. I'm sorry but this is just plain wrong. I bought it cause of that review and I already had the Stooges Studio Sessions and the Live in LA73 and both are better the Year of the iguana. The versions of Johanna and Open up and Bleed are way too short and lack a little umph especially in the backing vocals on Open Up, although its nice to really hear the words, I'd rather have the feeling. I would NOT recommend this as a forth Stooges Purchase, get Studio Sessions instead.

5 out of 5 stars Must have!.......2000-04-27

This is what the Stooges were all about. Nuff said.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT FOURTH STOOGES PURCHASE.......2000-02-26

If you've already heard the Stooges' three studio CD's (The Stooges, Fun House, and Raw Power) and are looking to sample some of the band's unreleased material, this eclectic grab bag of a CD is a good place to start. Five stars are given here as a measure against the many similar compilations on the market, not as a comparison to the aforementioned studio CD's. The sound quality varies from song to song, but what sets this compilation apart from the others is the inclusion of three excellent sounding finished cuts: the ear-splitting "I Got A Right" and "Scene Of The Crime" (leftover Raw Power masters), and a saxless, driving version of "Johanna" (from the post-Stooges Kill City sessions). Other tracks: a chilling live cut of "Open Up And Bleed" (same version as heard on Metallic 2xKO); an alternate mix of "Death Trip"; and rehearsals of "Raw Power", "Gimme Some Skin", "Head On", "Rubber Legs", "Till The End Of The Night", and "Wild Love" (same song as "My Girl Hates My Heroin", with different lyrics). Only complaint: the absence of the Stooges' best unreleased tune - "I'm Sick Of You" - a must-have that is available on the Bomp CD of the same name and also on the Nude And Rude: The Best Of Iggy Pop CD. Also check out the "Studio Sessions" CD for different rehearsal versions of some of the above (in more consistent, albeit slightly inferior, sound) and Iggy's sentimental ode to love: "Cock In My Pocket". "Highly" recommended.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Happy joyful music.......2003-11-05

This is a historical disc recorded over a twenty year span dating back to 1976. The recordings are by various groups representing the diversity of the sones jarocho, typically associated with but not limited to the Veracruz area of Mexico. The sones jarocho are easliy identified by the characteristic harp and smaller guitars and is a festive cultural music where dancers perform zapateados(a dance performed with emphasis on the shuffling stomping shoes) usually dressed in all white with 'kerchiefs around their necks and doning the sombrero(hat) of the tropics. To those unfamiliar with the sones jarocho, you may have heard it but not realized it with the popular song "La Bamba." The title track. "La Iguana" was recorded in recent years by Los Lobos who often incorporate sones jarocho into their ethnic blend of Aztlan roc. Another recognizeable song, performed by many artists in Mexico is "El Cascabel." To illustrate the popularity of this particular song it is performed twice by two different groups on this disc. This disc is in the BVSC vein only instead of Cuban performers the musicians are Mexican. Some of the singers were well into their 80's, approaching 90 when these songs were recorded. Some of the featured groups have been together for more than twenty five years. The diversity of the sones jarochos are as rich as the cultures that make up the music. There are influences from the Africa, most notably from the slaves(predominately Bantu) brought into the Veracruz region but the music streches well to the south where the Nahuatl and Popoluca cultural influences dominate the sound of sones jarochos. It is a fascinating mixture of cultures and sounds that make up the sones jarochos and one of the most popular is the huapango. There are twenty three songs featured, mostly in the three minute range, performed by seven different groups and one soloist. Each group lends their distinct interpretations to these Mexican classic songs beginning with the Trio de Mandinga and performances by Los Tiburones del Golfo, Conjunto de Santiago Tuxtla, Daniel Cabrerra, Ecos del Papaloapan, Conjunto Cosmaloapan and ending with the Conjunto Los Jarochos. Basically this disc is a joy to listen to and will take your mind on a National Geographic journey or if you are lucky enough to recall your own personal sights and sounds of Mexico lindo y querido. A super disc that is as festive as it is historical, which features good sound quality for a transporting musical experience.

5 out of 5 stars The harp is such a great instrument!.......1999-08-25

I love this CD and have already listened to track 16, La Morena, a hundred times. This song totally blows me away. Many other very cool songs on here also.

Whoa!Never even knew about this 4-CD box set release until I saw it in a local specialty shop.Apparently,Iggy's best work on the French label Revenge. But,didn't Revenge release several Stooges archive recordings?Either way,if you happen to be a major fan of the Igster, you should get plenty out of this box set,but DO keep in mind, there are four(4)complete gigs for your listening pleasure here. Was great to check out the 'Wild Animal 1976-77','Hippodrome-Paris 1977','Live At The Channel-Boston-1988' and 'Live At The Ritz-NYC 1986' shows once again.Good for anyone who has a lot of time on their hands.Well assembled box set.Makes it sound so exclusive, doesn't at times?'Box Set!!'

      5 out of 5 stars Loud,lewd and loose...........2004-05-21

Ok,ok,ok....live albums can be a challenge, especially when non-bootlegs(of good quality) are few and far between.
Here you have 4 examples(1 cd each) of concerts which well represent the more vital/raw music Iggy spewed forth during the 70's and 80,s.
The songs represented are excellent. The sound quality really quite good on cd#1, cd#3, cd#4...with cd#2 being the most confrontational to the discerning ear (hey, just like Iggy!).
Still, all things considered, this is the best place to go for one-stop shopping on live Iggy for as little as $26.00 plus s&h.

5 out of 5 stars The Nights of the Iguana.......2003-10-16

Ok Brute, get a clue..and don't enter your review twice to lower the rating. THIS IS IGGY LIVE, not the Culture Club, and the sound is RAW AND NASTY the way Iggy should be. What a great historical collection of his live career. And the book is beautifully done with text in French and English with great historical information about the Igster. Get it if you find it! Very great performances of some lesser found live tunes like the Passenger and Sixteen!

4 out of 5 stars Iggy Pop Recorded Live...Killer!.......2002-02-22

I don't understand the comments about the lousy sound? There are only 2 official label US releases of any Iggy Pop recordings I can think of: the "King Biscuit" cd which is the same concert as the '88 Channel Concert presented here and the "Live In NYC"
which is the same show as the cd #3 "Ritz" Concert from 1986 included in this set. The sonic quality presented on this box set is much better than those 2 US releases. Disc #1 is also quite good. The only exception is disc #2 recorded at the Hippodrome in Paris in 77. The source tape for this concert could be classified as "very good"; hardly distorted. But since when was Iggy Pop criticized for "sound quality"? It's all about Iggy's performance; and this set provides a pretty good career overview spanning a 12 year period. Iggy's vocals are right on; with the '88 Channel concert being the best.
Each cd features a different band line-up. The first disc features David Bowie on keyboards and the 4th disc rocks with former Hanoi Rocks guitarist Andy McCoy.
I would recommend this set for real Iggy fan's only. A new-comer would best be served by "Nude & Rude" as a springboard into Iggy's long career.
This set was made in France and the booklet has both French and English text? So what? The pictures included are excellent.
With so few really good "official" Iggy Pop recordings out there this is a definite must for any fan. "Real" Iggy fans will listen to this set over and over! I guess if you could only listen to it once you're not a true Iggy fan to begin with.

      1 out of 5 stars Brute.......2000-04-18

I have listened to this French collection thought to be representative for the work of Iggy Pop over the years. However, I am deeply troubled by the massive destructive sound that dominates the whole box set. This is no amusement, only crashing and distorted sound. I do regret that I bought this box set. The regular CDs are much better and listenable than this massive moan. In addition, the French behaviour of doubling the text in the booklet is disturbing. A big miss. The star is for the 3rd and 4th CDs which both have a clearer sound and less distorted uptake. You listen to this once.

4 out of 5 stars Not an average album by Aztek Trip.......2002-03-07

I was lucky enough to buy their cd and I have become a fan of their music. The songs are well written rock tunes with a couple sounding like Green Day(which is a complement). Some songs are much slower, others more intense so you get just about everything you could want in a rock album. "Average Day", "Mesmerized" and "Slipped Away" alone would make this a album worth having.

        4 out of 5 stars A Dandy.......2001-09-22

These boys from Allentown PA know how to crank it up, but do so without going over the edge into oblivion. Hook-laden, power packed rock and roll, Average Day would have been huge in the early 90's when this style was in fashion. It's not grunge, but a deliciously crunchy power alterna-pop. The variety on the album, from shameless pop, to nearly hardcore punk rock to power ballads allows this disc to bear up well after repeated listenings. A dandy.

5 out of 5 stars A stunning CD from a little known band..........2000-12-18

I recently saw Aztek Trip live in concert. Two words to describe my thoughts..."Simply amazing." Aztek Trip is not a very well known band, but they have the beautiful harmonies and lyrics coupled with some grinding guitars when necessary that should rocket them to the top if they get played often enough. From the great guitar and flow of "Average Day" and "Opportunity", the calm to energetic variation of "Shattered", and my favorite track, the simply beautiful "Slipped Away", this CD is a must buy for fans of any kind of rock, be it pop, punk, or hard. This is one of the closest CDs I've found to perfection in recent years.

        5 out of 5 stars GREAT CD.......2000-09-04

As soon as the CD was released, I bought it. This is by far the best CD I have ever heard in a long time. Ever since I saw them live, I bought their EP, and have been listening to it steadily for almost a year now. It's about time they released some new material; not that I'm unhappy about it. This full-length CD is by far the best collection of songs I have heard from the band, and apparently everyone else in my area does, since they've played at sold-out local concerts and are played on the radio almost every day in CT. This CD is a must-have for any rock or alternative fan. This CD should be in everyone's CD collection, because of Aztek Trip's sheer music brilliance and talent.

        5 out of 5 stars Finally, a full CD.......2000-08-19

AS most of us who have the Lost And Found EP, I've been wondering "When are these guys gonna release a full CD?" Well, now they finally have and it's everything and more that I expected. "About To Be" and "Liar" completely rock out. "Shattered" is a great song that starts out slow and slowly builds up. They re-recorded "Lost And Found" and "Opportunity" and the title track is a great first single. The best song and the most different on the CD is the last one, "Slipped Away", with a beautiful panio line, great lyrics, and perfect guitar, the song is a sure bet along with all the other songs on the CD.
