5 out of 5 stars An excellent album.......2001-05-17

I've had this album for several years now and am also familiar with Benoits earlier more "poppish" work. Letter to Evan is more mainstream oriented than most of his previous works. This however does not detract from what is truly a beautiful album. If you enjoyed "Waiting for Spring" you'll love this album, which I'd say is slightly more up tempo. I saw David Benoit live in London in 1996 and at the show (in a tiny club) he said that of all his compositions to that point, "Letter to Evan" was his favourite, and then he went on to play it. Live and in the flesh! A great musician and a very recommendable album.

2 out of 5 stars Weak offering by otherwise great artist........2000-12-14

After reading the other reviews, I had to write a review for this CD. I am a long time David Benoit fan, but I find this CD the least enjoyable Benoit CD that I own. It is a significant departure from his other work. The music is much more paced and sombre. There are songs I like on this CD, but when compared to earlier offerings like: 'This Side Up', 'Every Step of The Way', or 'Inner Motion', this CD is disappointing. Save your money and buy 'This Side Up' (his best work) instead!

5 out of 5 stars Letter to Evan.......2000-02-22

David Benoit did this Cd mainly for a friend, Bill Evans. He died while his son was about 16. Letter to Evan and Knit for Mary F. are Bill Evan's compostions.

Waiting for love is a guitar based song at the beginning, then it moves into piano.

Looking over eastlake. Wow. Its great! It so jazzy and complex, and not to mention fun to listen to.

Take 6. Thats a great one to.

This is a relly good, album by David Benoit. GO FOR IT!

5 out of 5 stars This is the ultimate audio gift........1998-12-12

Wouldn't it be wonderful if this genre of music were more widely disseminated. In my opinion this is Benoit at his finest. Bravo and encore, please!!

5 out of 5 stars If you like Dave Brubeck & Bill Evans, you'll love this CD........1998-05-12

I am writing this in the hopes that David Benoit will read it. David: please, please, please give us, your fans, more of this music! For me, it is your crowning achievement.

5 out of 5 stars Strong!.......2006-07-27

Seems a lot of folks find Golijov shallow and it's easy to qualify. One example: he goes to that ululated falling second degree business so often when he wants pathos that it becomes a cliche. That's calculation.
On the other hand, accusations of phoniness and pretension can hardly be qualified. It's just name-calling, like right-wing talk radio.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting sampler.......2006-06-13

This cd offers a snapshot of the downtown New York classical scene of the early 90s, played by one of the great new music chamber groups, the Bang on a Can All-Stars.
I find the preceding comment about "phoniness" suspect in that such accusations have little to do with the music at hand, but rather are borne of some personal resentment. It says nothing. What exactly is it that you find phony? What do you think genuine is?

4 out of 5 stars The best CD.......2001-12-14

thsi Cd is great to listen to, and is one of my fav's

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good Performance - bad recording!.......2005-12-06

I was shocked at the poor recording quality on this CD (it sounds like a few I have made with my minidisc recorder in clubs). The piano has a few keys that are annoyingly out of tune and the drum solo on track 2 is very distorted. It's ok when the drums aren't overblasting the mic and Bill avoids the bad keys (I can't believe he would use this piano!).

5 out of 5 stars beautifully done, as usual.......2001-05-20

Bill Evans was an extraordinarily gifted artist. My appreciation for this cd is personal, the track "Knit For Mary F" was written for my mother who was a close friend to this wonderful man. So precise and clear are the notes and played with great emotion, this cd is a classic. A Bill Evans comes along once in a lifetime. This cd is a must for the collector who is moved by Bill's sensitivity and grace. His ability to reach the heart in undeniable.

5 out of 5 stars Essential late Evans.......2001-02-24

This CD (along with the "Turn Out The Stars" CD on the same label) is an essential live recording of the Bill Evans Trio at Ronnie Scott's in London during Bill's final days (released with permission of Mr. Evans' estate). These performances reveal Bill reaching a remarkable pinnacle in technique and harmonic and rhythmic inventiveness, also heard on the more high-profile CD Box Sets "The Last Waltz" (Fantasy) and "Turn out the Stars: The Final Village Vanguard Recordings" (WB). These Ronnie Scott recordings are every bit as exciting, sometimes even more freewheeling and electric in character. The sound quality is very good for a live club recording, and renditions of "Your Story", "Stella By Starlight", "Emily", and "Letter To Evan" are definitive examples of the Evans/Johnson/LaBarbera trio at its finest.
