Editorial Reviews

From Jazziz
Nearly 10 years ago, veteran sideman Michael O'Neill had the seed planted for him to become a solo artist when he was onstage at Carnegie Hall as part of a world tour with singer Rickie Lee Jones in support of her 1991 Top Pop album.

Like most guys who make a great living jamming behind bigger stars, O'Neill -whose resume boasts a few years in the 1980s with Stevie Wonder and a near-nonstop two decades with George Benson - had trouble carving out the time and space to compose and produce an album's worth of material. His muse kept pecking away at him until he felt confident and made the time. The one advantage to waiting some 20-odd years to create the appropriately titled Never Too Late (Merrimack) is the wealth of stylistic influences he's absorbed along the way.

It's easy to identify these influences on a track-by-track basis on Never Too Late. The title track - co-written with keyboardist Gregg Karukas - finds O'Neill approximating the crisp electric style of Benson - high tones flutter and dart off the main melody as wah-wah click textures call out in the background. Ditto the mid-tempo, retro-soul ballad "Winds of Summer," which opens with a brisk hook that recalls Benson's "Breezin'." Pianist Dave Witham (another vet from the Benson crew) chimes in at one point with a quick but playful solo before O'Neill digs into a solo that slowly builds steam.

O'Neill pays homage to Stevie Wonder, too, playing things fairly close to the vest on a thoughtful cover of "Visions" with vocals by Carl Anderson. "I Ain't Lyin' " dips into that Crusaders spirit, opening with a dense swirl of percussion by trapsman Land Richards and Dio Saucedo's tambourine. O'Neill then launches into a rocking electric guitar melody over the bluesy organ harmony of Chris Ho, with plenty of Wayne Henderson-like horn hits provided by Walt Fowler. Mid-tempo meditations like "Sidewalk Strut" and the Brazilian-flavored acoustic piece "Cruisin' On Down" (featuring O'Neill's lively scatting) offer more evidence of the guitarist's ability to please the listener's ear while stretching stylistic boundaries.

5 out of 5 stars "The Summer Smiles, The Summer Knows".......2006-01-07

"When Monica Mancini set out to record this retrospective of songs from films, she clearly had her passions in order. Monica comes by her affinity for the medium honestly, having grown up in a house permeated with some of the best film music in history, from the pen of her incredibly prolific father, Henry. So it is no surprise that this collection has all the artistry, pathos, and musicality that it so deserves." ~ Dave Grusin, Liner Notes - 2002 ~

Dave Grusin, an expert arranger, conductor, pianist, film scorer himself has described this album so perfectly. The choice of material in this CD is impeccable with Monica Mancini's graceful interpretations and not to mention the flawlessly beautiful arrangements by Torrie Zito, John Calandrelli, Michael Lang, Patrick Williams, George Doering, Ray Ellis, Harvey Cohen and John Frizzell. There are twelve theme songs from various remarkable films in this recording and most of the tracks were backed up by an orchestra with the exception of a few.

The theme song from the movie "Summer of '42" penned by the creative husband-and-wife-team of Alan & Marilyn Bergman and composer Michel Legrand "The Summer Knows" is one of my top choices from this collection. Splendidly arranged by Michael Lang and Harvey Cohen on string section, she renders this timeless song so true to its essence and making it the most beautiful version, bar none!

Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "Alfie" (from the movie of the same title), is a moving song accompanied only by the sublime piano playing of Michael Lang. She has an exquisitely beautiful voice, the kind that still shines without the trimmings and backing up of an orchestra, (the kind that still glows even on A Cappella singing). Another affecting song and a favorite of mine is "Too Late Now," a Burton Lane and Alan Jay Lerner treasure and theme from the movie "Royal Wedding." The orchestral arrangement was done by Torrie Zito, a fine pianist/arranger/conductor who worked briefly with the legendary musical icon, Frank Sinatra. I loved the way he injected a classical touch on his arrangement, almost sounding like one of Claude Debussy's masterpieces. I would say that this is one of the best tracks. Ditto with another Torrie Zito arrangement, Johnny Mandel and Paul Webster's "The Shadow of Your Smile" from the movie "The Sandpiper." Ms. Mancini gave these classics the retire-the-trophy-treatments and made them her very own.

The lovely opener, Ennio Morricone and Gregg Field's "Cinema Paradiso," arranged by Jorge Calandrelli, is also one of the standouts. Another beauty is "I'll Never Say Goodbye" from the movie "The Promise" with piano accompaniment by Michael Lang. The finale "Over The Rainbow" from "The Wizard of Oz" is simply divine with orchestral arrangement by Ray Ellis.

This recording produced by Ms. Mancini's musician husband, Gregg Field, truly showed off not only the singer's vocal artistry, but her classy and elegant style of singing. Thank you Ms. Mancini for your wonderful gift of music. Music to enjoy forever!

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent Monica!.......2004-06-28

My favorite song of all time is "The Shadow of Your Smile" from the movie "The Sandpiper". Until now, the 2 best versions of it were by Barbra Streisand and Tony Bennett. By FAR, this is THE best version of that song. Pure, without "vocal gymnastics", screaming, yelping or other artificial "stylings".. here it is sung as it was written, perfectly performed with beautiful orchestration. The rest of the album is no less miraculous. It is stunning. "A Day in the Life of a Fool", "Cinema Paradiso" and the haunting and tender "Theme from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" are just as lavish and well-crafted. Okay Monica, now could you release one album a year instead of one album every 3 years? Pleeeeassee??

5 out of 5 stars She's chocolate and creme!.......2004-01-29

Seeing Monica Mancini on stage singing the theme from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, hearing Gregg Field's drums, seeing the multi-media film clip behind her... is like having chocolate and creme!

Monica does not belt you to death, she does not yell at you, she does not punch notes into your being... she soothes you to her, lures you, with a voice that has been hidden for years.

Her voice is perfect in pitch, tone, and her ability to hit every single note as if she were born to sing. Clearly having inherited talent from her mom Ginny and her dad Henry.

On this cd I love the way she embraces other composers songs..."Baby Mine" just one of them. I about melted when she sang that song.

She has a great sense of humor on stage, is spontaneous, and is herself.

She has a great secure personality and stage persona and she has the family roots to give you a chill in your bones when she shares them with you in stories and song.

Hearing her sing live is like being home!

5 out of 5 stars Astonishing.......2003-09-04

I sample A LOT of jazz vocalists (for some reason most contemporary jazz vocalists seem to be female) but initially dismissed Monica Mancici because she's the child of a famous father. Henry was very classy and as accomplished as musicians get, and such qualities rarely get passed down the line. What a mistake. I only heard her Mercer album because it was -- thankfully -- being played in a store I was visiting. I bought it, loved it, and was primed for this collection. A solid Five Stars. There's new stuff here (for me) and old songs done splendidly. Over The Rainbow, aside from its original iconic take by "Judy," has been covered hundreds of times. And Monica's take? Quite simply as good as any. With this release I've recognized what I love about Monica's voice: Aside from being simply perfect technically, her voice glows like a crackling fireplace! I mourned the recent passing of Rosemary Clooney, and now feel that there's a relatively new vocalist who I can follow for many years. Live or recorded, I'll be there ...

5 out of 5 stars Monica's Latest is the best yet.......2003-06-04

Sorry, but I don't worry about the nuts and bolts of every particular detail of an album. I play what I enjoy and Monica's albums bring me that enjoyment. Cinema Paradiso has rarely left my CD Player. I'm only sorry she appears not to have a web page. Where someone like Michael Jackson or Dixie Chicks are all over the Internet, virtually no information is available concerning Monica Mancini. It's impossible to find a concert schedule. I hope she produces another album soon, I've worn out her others.

4 out of 5 stars stunning studio album in creamy stereo.......2004-08-05

This studio album of Weill and Gershwin's LADY IN THE DARK features the lovely Rise Stevens making the role of Liza Elliott her own, with Adolph Green in the role that made Danny Kaye a star in the original production.

This sumptuous reissue on the Columbia 'Masterworks Heritage' label presents the recording in creamy stereo, with the orchestra under the baton of Lehman Engel. Rise Stevens is perhaps the best singer to have played Liza on any recording of LADY IN THE DARK. The trained opera singer lets her hair down for the manic "Saga of Jenny", and yields glowing versions of "My Ship" and "One Life to Live". Also featured among the cast are John Reardon and Stephanie Augustine.

My only qualm about the release is the horrid packaging. The disc is enclosed in a cardboard sleeve at the back of a booklet-style slipcase, leaving the CD vulnerable to scratches and dust (I remedied the problem by putting the CD in a separate plastic jewel case and filing it on the shelf next to the empty booklet case). However this should not deter collectors and musical theatre fans from seeking out this lovely recording.

5 out of 5 stars STELLAR STAR!.......2003-01-03

MISS STEVENS shinesas Liza Eliot in this perfect recording of "Lady in the Dark". [For the first time - with repect to the other artists - the lyrics are pristine!] THE recording? IF you own a 'surround system' - this one IS flawless - just a perfect balance of voice and instrument. [A great restoration job - if only they could do the same to the Lawrence version....]

FOR the collector - get all three recordings currently available - the 1997 London version is the most complete, the Gertrude Lawrence? It's more of a Star Vehicle for Miss Lawrence - lots of dialogue - with really only the two "Liza' numbers - "Saga of Jenmny" and "My Ship" intact - but also well worth the journey.

AS A BONUS - Miss Stevens recording contains the Danny Kaye contribution missing from the Gertrude Lawrence recording - plus his versions of "My Ship" and "The Saga of Jenny".

4 out of 5 stars There IS a more complete recording. . ........2000-12-06

This recording is terrific, but for a more complete recording with much better quality, look for the Original Cast Recording from the Royal National Theatre Production. It's got all the bridging music which is phenomenal.

5 out of 5 stars Great Fun.......1999-04-15

Until the definitive full version of the score comes out--with all the bridging material and orchestral interludes--this is probably the most complete of one of the greatest and most charming classic Broadway scores (and probably Ira Gershwin's masterpiece). Rise Stevens was born to play the part, and though at times she gets a bit excessive (especially in the dialogue) her voice is beautiful and confident (a high point is her counterpointing the chorus during "The Best Years of His Life"), and iat times really soars, as in "This is new." Adolph Green is hilarious--it's a great tragedy he never got to play this role on Broadway.

4 out of 5 stars A fun, if abbreviated, recording.......1999-04-02

A nifty performance of one of Broadway's classic scores. The biggest problem is that just about everything is slightly abridged (mostly verses, connecting material, dialogue underscoring and choral repeats--although if I'm reading the vocal score right, most of this would still be interesting to listen to); still, a reasonably good taste of the whole thing. The liner notes also don't really give a story synopsis, so if you aren't familiar with the plot, seek out a summary so you aren't completely confused by what is going on. Rise Stevens' acting is pretty mannered, and she goes over the top vocally every now and then; she seems to be shouting, not singing at the end of "Jenny." Adolph Green is hysterically funny and acquits himself supremely well in "Tchaikovsky." How you'll enjoy the appendix of Danny Kaye's recordings depends on how much you like Danny Kaye--enough said.

4 out of 5 stars Tauber for the first buyer.......1999-01-02

Richard Tauber was, in my opinion, the most seductive and complex singer of this century. His voice was excellent, but not in itself, just as a vehicle for an infinity of shadings, in a plethora of styles. He was arguably the greatest ever operetta singer but his gifts were perfectly expressing themselves in lied, in popular song and in a great part of the opera repertoire ("heldentenor" excepted). Like Kreisler in violin playing, Tauber represented the essence of the Viennese spirit. His vocal specialties included the sweteest mezzavoce or headvoice one could hope for. He was accessible and highly refined in the same time. For the very low price of this Gala CD, you can taste the complex artistry of Richard Tauber, both in his German (better) period and in the "English" one. The reason I'm giving 4, not 5 stars to this CD is that I believe his all-German CD concotions to be more valuable. But for this price...

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars GREAT RECORDING, BUT THE PRICE..........1999-12-01

This is 20th century opera at its most vivid. Once considered a failure, Osud was resurrected in an English translation that actually improves upon the original libretto. The music is as vital as anything in Janacek: the piece starts a churning riff strangely reminiscent of Philip Glass; the ending is equally memorable -- startlingly brusque and humorous. Throughout, we get musical drama tied to the quick of spoken language; conversations overlap, or suddenly fall silent. At times the story is ridiculous, but the production rides over any problems. Philip Langridge, as always, is great. My only qualm: this was originally a single disc CD on EMI, for a single disc price. Though the package is nice, the price is steep for some 70:00 odd minutes.

i love this cd i was very happy to find it on cd, because it was only on album before and i only knew one person who had it and we all had to record it from him. the first track the veil thins is my favorite off the album but there is a lot more to love about this album as well jack is heavy and gruesome to listen to the lyrics to jack are very complex and gory at the same time. bud is also heavy and mind altering. as a whole this cd is great for people who can handle a different prospective on music and lyrics, its heavy and hard but not fast. you have to hear it to appreciate it. i love it

      5 out of 5 stars Brecht sings!.......2003-02-02

Come on! A chance to hear Bertolt Brecht sing his own Mack the Knife before Bobby Darrin messed it up! How many CDs are going to have that?!

3 out of 5 stars Some good, some bad, all Weill........2003-01-02

Kurt Weill and Broadway fans will probably feel an intense need to have this album, and I'm not sure I'd be able to dissuade them. There's some good stuff on this recording, to be sure, but a great deal of it is in German, and much of it might not interest even someone with just a casual interest in the material chronicled. While there's a strong representation of The Threepenny Opera (all in German), the selections from Lady in the Dark featuring Gertrude Lawrence and Danny Kaye are vital, as are the tracks of Mary Martin and Kenny Baker performing selected numbers from One Touch of Venus. (You can also hear Walter Huston performing a song from Knickerbocker Holiday, though it is, for some strange reason, "The Scars." It's an interesting historical record, but not a great song.) Lotte Lenya also sings some as well, which is a treat, but overall, this is a highly variable recording. Make sure you know exactly what you're getting beforehand, or you may be likely to find yourself--as I do--listening to only half the album.

4 out of 5 stars Nuclear Spirit Trio.......2007-04-06

Driven by my recent Brotzmann (re)discovery, I bought this double live album sometime before writing my review of Peter and Hamid Drake's Dried Rat Dog. Here we have the Holy Trinity scouring our minds in search of any cell that has yet to witness... I don't know... something to which words don't do justice... something that just has to be witnessed... felt. Recorded on 4/10/01 with Hamid on traps, Peter on tenor sax, tarogato and a-clarinet, and William on bass (upright acoustic, of course) and doussin gouni, I was ready to give this one 5 stars before I was even halfway through the first disc on the first time I listened to it.

Brotzmann is a force of sub-atomic micro-nature. I don't mean "a force" in a blistering squealy "free-jazz" cliches way, though. Honestly, I can't decide what I think of him here. At times he's an army of robotic nano insects coursing through your DNA, somehow searching for the key to the secrets of humanity. Other times he's a flock of nitrous chickens speaking in tongues only they can decipher. Either way, he is a tone and sound master. Can anyone else say so much with color, shading and texture, yet actually blow so few "notes"?

If you're like me and believe William & Hamid to be the most nimble, capable, imaginative rhythm duo of my lifetime, just stop reading and buy this now. I've been listening to these guys for a long time (for my age), and this is easily one of the best examples of their brand of glorious, high improvisation I've ever heard. If you, me and anyone else who's read this review had been at this concert, we'd still be blathering on about it to our friends and neighbors. Heck I blather on about this cd to someone after every time I listen to it again. These guys are the premier groove unit of the western hemisphere as far as I'm concerned. They can freely scatter dust into the rings of saturn but then just as easily discover a murderous groove that has me dancing in the living room by myself.

Listen to atoms being split, hear the lonely yearnings of a baby elephant lost in a dust storm, lose yourself in this masterpiece. The only reason I give it 4 stars rather than 5 is that in headphones I wish William's bass were louder. To get him where I want him to be, Brotz is too loud for me. It's no biggie, though. I just thought maybe a super audiophile type might read this, buy it, and somehow be depressed that this isn't the single most perfect audio quality of all time. I play this on the open-air speakers and it basically makes me hallucinate. I can't begin to complain about anything as great as this.

5 out of 5 stars another key recording.......2005-09-02

This is an amazing recording by Brötzmann that shows how well these three musicians work together, or might you say live together, as it would seem in this recording that it is actually a form of living that is witnessed. William Parker and Hamid Drake complete the set, and it is very difficult to find, or better said, to pin point the elements that comprise this recording on most of the extensive Brötzmann repertoire; the beauty of this recording is that it manages to be skronk in disguise, or perhaps not in disguise, but skronk that has constructed itself into a beautiful groove, a flow of dialogue that is abrasive yet soothing, releasing... and they do groove on this one, but always with that visceral sound that gives the illusion of slight damage, of chaos being on the brink... and then they unleash it upon the interactive audience... I would feel tempted to compare this one to Songlines on FMP, although they are in most regards entirely different, they do concur in working as a showcase of sorts for Brötzmann's sound, but not a showcase for propaganda, it is just such a good recording that it never looses the listener and it becomes a maxim of these men... as always it is raw, but with that most enticing counterpoint of frailty that is so powerful... highly recommended

        5 out of 5 stars A great farewell for a great man.......2004-03-16

Dedicated to the late Peter Kowald, this double album is simply amazing. Die like a dog trio: Parker,Drake, Brotzmann in an Ayleresque ensemble relating some of the higher spiritual experiences you can attain in music. Not since Coltrane, or great spiritual music teachers has there been such inspired music. The creation of the Die like a dog quartet is suppose to be in honor of Albert Ayler who is alleged to have commited suicide by drowning himself in th East River. He had lived like a king and died like a dog. The great spiritual teacher of the twentieth century George I. Gurdjieff, told his disciples that they have to work on themselves to obtain a soul so that they won't die like dogs(sic). Coming from different spiritual backgrounds, the musicians presented here are showing clear signs of struggling with themselves, being able to let go of their ego so the communication between them can be uplifted to another level. Recorded at the Casa del Popolo in Montreal, I had the privilege to assist at that show, it was a blessing and I came out of there changed. By the way, the greatest spiritual realisation occured when dedicated to others...
