Fantastic!!.......2007-06-25

I absolutely loved this CD. Unlike other reviewers who didn't appreciate Hubert Sumlin playing rhythm guitar and Clapton playing lead, Howlin' Wolf and Mr. Sumlin, both tried and true together, give way to some new blues followers, and thank God. Look what has become of Eric as a blues front man! Not to mention the mark the Stones and Steve Winwood have left on the blues scene. I love the humbleness shown here. Also, if you watch Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival DVD from Dallas 2004, you will note Hubert Sumlin featured as a blues great playing along side Clapton, Buddy Guy, BB King, Robert Cray and Jimmy Vaughn. This CD is fantastic, I recommend it to any blues lover.

timeless.......2007-03-12

This cd exceeded my expectations. The 60's rockers backing up their idol Howlin Wolf in the twilight of his career sounded as if they had been a unit for years. The musicians manage to give the songs a fresh sound while still staying true to its roots. The Howlin Wolf although at the recording was becoming more and more ill infuses his ailing into his singing to make the listener feel the blues. Excellent CD.

If you don't like this album, you have no soul.......2007-02-13

I've often heard that "blues purists" have great disdain for this album, which leads me to think the definition of "blues purist" is "someone who tries way too hard to not like good music."

Sure, Wolf was old. Sure, you can tell he wasn't in great health. But he was still perfectly able to get a song over and still had ample power upon which to draw when he needed to. The performances by the backing musicians (particularly Ian Stewart) are generally impeccable, the arrangements are tasteful if at times a bit cluttered, and Eric Clapton manages to walk the fine line between showcasing his own chops and not stepping on the toes of Wolf or his material. I think he pulls it off splendidly.

My only two complaints about this album are A) The Steve Winwood organ solo on "Who's Been Talking" (more '60s psychedelia than Chicago blues, sounds out of place), and the criminal relegation of the great Hubert Sumlin to (barely audible) rhythm guitar duties. This is like asking Michelangelo to paint tract houses, and the album would have benefited if Clapton and Sumlin both played lead guitar.

Aside from those fairly minor gripes, there's not really anything to dislike about this album if you enjoy listening to great musicians play great music. Highly recommended.

Blues With a Feelin', That's What I Have Today.......2006-12-23

Released in 1971, the CD continued a trend to have legendary blues artists record with popular British rockers who were well versed in the history of the music.

Howlin' Wolf and guitarist Hubert Sumlin were joined by Eric Clapton (g), Bill Wyman (b), Charlie Watts (d), Jeffrey Carp (h) and other musicians, including Steve Winwood, Ian Stewart, Ringo Starr and Klaus Voorman in what was a tribute to the blues legend. Howlin' Wolf who was not in good health at the time of the recording, but he still packed a punch on these blues standards and - at least one time - showed who was the boss in the studio.

There is a false take for The Red Rooster where Howlin' Wolf stops the recording and chastises Clapton on the way he was playing his electric guitar. Clapton and the rest of the band then convince Howlin' Wolf to play his acoustic guitar along with singing, which follows in the second take.

The choice cuts include I Ain't Superstitious - Starr and Voorman are the rhythm section - Highway 49 and Wang Dang Doodle, where Clapton unleashes some wicked guitar work.

There are other collections that have recordings of Howlin' Wolf in his prime. But for fans who want to hear the influence of blues on British rock musicians or those who may not be familiar Howlin' Wolf, The London Howlin' Wolf Sessions is a great starting point on the trek filled unfortunately with great artists who are nearly forgotten with the passage of time.

Great Intro. to The Blues.......2006-10-15

If you like Classic Rock and Roll and are looking to get into The Blues this is a great place to start. Chess Records, in following the success of Fathers and Sons, ships both Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters to play with a who's who of British Rock. On this album, Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Charlie Watts, and more accompany Howlin for a set of his classic tunes. While this may not be Howlin Wolf's best material it is still fun. The take out of Little Red Rooster is great where Eric and others try to talk Howlin into play along. Steve Winwood really shines on this album. Howlin while not at his peak is still a force of the blues. This is a great place to start and a great way to get someone into the blues. Won't spare the expense of the delux version.

There Were 5 Essential Butterfield Albums, Now Make It 6. (and now 3 of them are must haves)........2007-04-01

This album is a rare, and precious gem that fits quite comfortably between the first album, and East-West. The people at Elektra discovered that sometimes true gold can be found without digging in a gold mine. And they struck real gold, not fools gold. And on the list of gems are songs like Spoonful, Everything's Gonna Be Alright (which I haven't heard since the release of Woodstock 2), Mellow Down Easy (the only repeat out of 19 songs), Rock Me, and Poor Boy. This is not only to be added to the Essentials list, but the top 2 must haves have now become three.

Not enough Bloomfield guitar, but his keyboard playing fits in well. Butterfield and drummer Sam Lay are on fire, while Elvin and Jerome do a fine job, as usual.

A great blues recording........2006-01-03

I have heard the white vs. black bluesman argument for years and years. I've always felt that it isn't the color of the skin that's important when it comes to the music but rather the soul of the musician. Given that, this is a great blues album by a band of soulful bluesmen. Butterfields harp is as hot as ever and the guitars of Bloomfield and Bishop are the epitome of the blues. The Paul Butterfield Blues Band were one of the greatest blues bands ever assembled and this recording is evidence of that fact. My only question is how this music has gone unheard for all of these years?

Why was this music scrapped?!.......2003-10-05

Even though this page only lists five tracks, "The Original Lost Electra Sessions" is not an EP, it's a 19-track CD.

All but one of these 19 tracks were recorded in December, 1964, as Paul Butterfield's projected first LP, but the results were (inexplicably) scrapped and replaced by the band's official self-titled debut, cut a few months later.

With both Sam Lay, Elvin Bishop and Mike Bloomfield already onboard, these sessions are very similar in feel to the Paul Butterfield Blues Band's first album. It's perhaps a little bit rawer in production and performance, but not really worse or different than what ended up on the actual debut LP.

Dedicated primarily to electric Chicago blues standards, it opens with a somewhat rushed take on "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl", followed by a great "Just To Be With You" with some sublime harp playing by Paul Butterfield.

Butterfield also does a pretty good Sonny Boy Williamson (II) on a faithful rendition of "Help Me", and there are many more highlights, including an excellent rendition of the classic blues shuffle "Poor Boy", a slow, smouldering "It Hurts Me Too", an alternate version of the fine original "Our Love Is Drifting", a great, swinging "Take Me Back Baby", Jimmy Rogers' "That's All Right", and yet another Tampa Red-tune, "Love Her With A Feeling".
The band also lay down a really good version of Jimmy Oden's "Goin' Down Slow", and the originals "Lovin' Cup" and the fiery instrumental "Nut Popper #1" are excellent.

Virtually everything here is worth a listen, actually. It's not highly original, but The Paul Butterfield Blues Band's versions of these classic Chicago blues tunes are among the best and most convincing blues music ever waxed by a (primarily) white blues band. And any serious blues guitar lover will want to hear Mike Bloomfield's supremely tasty, economical playing.

Paul Butterfield fans will find this album well worth acquiring, as most of the selections were never officially recorded by the band's original lineup.

The memory played no tricks!.......2004-03-23

I owned this album on vinyl when it briefly appeared in the UK around 1980. I remembered that I had enjoyed it very much - but would it stand the test of the intervening 20+ years? The answer is a resounding YES! It's not all that it seems to be, because the Robert Jr.Lockwood tracks are the man operating as part of a loose assembly of accompanyment from the likes of Sunnyland Slim on piano and Alfred Wallace on drums, as well as other instrumentation that appears on individual tracks. Indeed Lockwood only gets to undertake the vocals on tracks 1 to 4 and 11 & 12, but his fluid guitar contributions are everywhere.Favourites are "Sunnyland Special" (Luandrew on vocals on this one) and "Sweet Woman from Maine", where Lockwoods vocals are added to by alto sax from Alex Atkins. However the real bonus for me are the Johnny Shines tracks, probably the 'best' vocal performances from him on record.Tracks 13 to 16 have backing from a three piece of second guitar (Moody Jones) bass and drums."Fishtail" is my favourite ( a raunchy Cadillac metaphor) but they're all excellent. On tracks 17 to 22 he's accompanied by Big Walter Horton. "Evening Sun" is electric, but the two versions of "Gonna Call an Angel"(there are actually 4 takes) is a great indication of what Shines was aiming for (and achieved).It's an expensive buy, but the Johnny Shines tracks would make it worth the price on their own, and the Lockwood tracks make it an indispensible purchase. Highly recommended

Exellent jump blues guitarist and singer..........2005-06-08

J.B. Lenoir is a superb singer, and a great guitarist. A Chicago blues master(& hero). Lenoir doesn't have gritty, or rough vocie like Jimmy Reed, Muddy Waters, or John Lee Hooker, but a more softer tone, similar but more masculine then Little Jimmy Scott. Lenoir's vocal sound would have fit fine a decade later in the doo-wop era, but in 1954-55 Lenoir's smooth as Big Bill Broonzy voice is flawless, and certianly instantly recognizable. He sounds like nobody else in blues(maybe only Slim Harpo has a more distinctive style then Lenoir).

His guitar palying is great too, and the songs often backed by honking r&b style saxaphones, and wailin' rhythm sections. His biggest hit "Mama, Talk To Your Daughter", is sort of the answer to Ruth Brown's big hit "Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean." Aside from that rockin' boogie hit, there are 12 other songs mostly given the same rockin', rollicking boogie(boogaloo) shuffle. On some of the later cuts, Lenoir's vocie sounds more gruff, where he sounds like he's trying to emulate Jimmy Reed. Great stuff, and it all ROCKS, and has that sort of cruisin' beat that is aparent in all of Jimmy Reed, and Little Walter's recordings. AWESOME DISC!!! 5 1/2 stars all the way!

Underrated.......2004-02-11

J.B. Lenoir is probably best known for his exuberant boogie "Mama, Talk To Your Daughter", but he was much more than just a one-hit wonder, writing several excellent songs in his sharp, literate style. Just listen to "Eisenhower Blues".

Sounding a little like Jimmy Reed fully awake and with less drawling, Lenoir plays driving rhythm guitar (and an occational minimalistic solo), backed by a two-sax combo, bass, piano, and drummer Al Gavin with his singular sense of rhythm. (On the catchy boogie "Give Me One More Shot", Gavin starts out the tune on the wrong beat, gets on the right beat by mistake, and then "corrects" himself!)

A reissue of the original 1989 compilation "The Parrot Sessions, 1954-55: Vintage Chicago Blues", this CD compiles Lenoir's singles for the Parrot label only, so it is not a definitive career overview. But since the Parrot sessions produced some of Lenoir's finest music, it is a very fine place to start.
His stripped-down early singles can be found on "I Feel So Good: 1951-54 J.O.B. Recordings", and most of the rest is on "Vietnam Blues: The Complete L&R Recording" and "Mojo Boogie: An Essential Collection".

These Tracks Feature Fleetwood Mac Members John Mcvie, Peter Green and Danny Kirwan Backing Him Up. The Resulting Album, "The Biggest Thing Since Colossus" Yielded the Hit Single "Hungry Country Girl" and the Great Jam of "Someday Soon Baby". Alas, Spann's Solo Dreams were Short Lived and Dashed as He Developed Cancer and Passed Away in 1970. However, These Recordings Serve as Testament to his Legacy, Along with Mentor Waters Having Namechecked Him in Many of his Own Songs after his Death.
