As befits the soundtrack of a music biopic, most of the heavy lifting here is done by the movie's subject: iconic French singer Edith Piaf. She was the Gallic Judy Garland, a natural performer who overcame one personal tragedy after another and was never more alive than on stage, forging an uncommon bond with both material and audience. Since actress Marion Cotillard lip-synchs in the film, the first 11 tracks on the CD are by Piaf herself, and give a good overview of her biggest hits (though we get the English version of the title track) and her feverish, ultra-dramatic style. But Piaf wasn't only a tragedienne of song: Her lighter side is represented by "Rien de Rien" and "Mon Manège à Moi," which she infuses with wonderful flair. Tracks 12-20 are made up of Christopher Gunning's richly symphonic original score (check out "La Mort de Leplée"). The last third of the album offers Piaf without Piaf, with contemporary singers Jil Aigrot and Maya Barsoni performing her songs (apparently because the originals' poor sound quality meant they would have stuck out in the movie). Watch out, however, for Mistinguett's hilarious "Il m'a vu nue," a slice of French music-hall history preserved in amber. --Elisabeth VincentelliAlbum Description

There are worse things in life than making your acting debut on the much ballyhooed season finale of Ally McBeal, though teen operatic baritone Josh Groban doesn't seem destined to encounter them anytime soon. As the awkward high school student-client who asks the typically romance-jinxed Ally to his senior prom, Groban performed this debut album's "You're Still You" (adapted from film-composing legend Ennio Morricone's Academy Award-nominated score for Malèna, with lyrics by Linda Thompson) as a heart-tugging, literal showstopper. The young phenom was just 17 when veteran producer-writer David Foster tapped him to fill in for Andrea Bocelli at rehearsals for the 1999 Grammys, where Groban found himself suddenly dueting with Celine Dion.Indeed, such were his fortunes that the young Foster protégé was forced to drop out of Carnegie Mellon when professional commitments--including this record--interfered. And if this collection tends to hew sometimes uncomfortably close to Foster's own MOR sonic instincts, the material offers enough challenges to display Groban's talent and the potential of his warm, mature voice: a lyrical take on another Morricone classic, "Cinema Paradiso"; melancholy readings of Don McLean's "Starry, Starry Night" and Albert Hammond's "Alejate"; masterfully dramatic takes of the Neapolitan "Alla Luca Del Sole" and "Canto Alla Vita," the latter featuring the Corrs. Many of Groban's performances here, including a neo prog-rock-opera take on Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" (with Lili Haydn), seem both bigger and bolder than their precious musical frameworks, a telling hint that Grand Opera can't be far from his grasp. As said earlier, there are worse things in life. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description
St. Vincent is the moniker of singer/multi-instrumentalist/composer Annie Clark and this is her debut full-length. She's opened for such diverse acts as Television, Jose Gonzalez, and Sufjan Stevens, and she's an inventive and versatile guitarist who has also performed with avant-garde composer Glenn Branca. On this record, she writes cinematic pop epics that feel at times like Paris in the 20s before all the fun ended. Or, conversely, an orchestra of pure modernity - a new American music, informed by jazz, gospel blues, Southern folk music, and classical composition but, in the end, an animal original unto itself. She's been compared to everyone from Bjork to Kate Bush to Jeff Buckley, and her beautiful voice melds perfectly with her intricate guitar work.Customer Reviews:
Instantly Memorable.......2007-07-18
The music is complex and varied, the lyrics intelligent. The songs are instantly memorable -- a pretty rare quality!
Oh, and did I mention Annie's voice -- Saint-like!
Amazing live, and an amazing album.......2007-07-18
Absolutely Unforgettable! A Perfect Solo Debut!.......2007-07-17
The album starts off with the brilliantly composed "Now Now" in which a choir of childish vocals declare "You don't mean that, say you're sorry" just before Annie inserts "I'll make you sorry." Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the song is the mere fact that Clark took care of most of the instrumentation herself, as she does through most of the album. While multi-instrumentalists are a dime a dozen these days, few are able to blend the individual parts together in a way that seems so cohesive.
The humorously titled, "Jesus Saves, I Spend" features Christmas carol-esque "Bum bum bums" in the background, and even a few jingle bells for good measure. Here, Annie sings "While Jesus is saving, I'm spending all my grace on the rosy red power of lights on center stage" nonchalantly, adding to the carefree feel of the song almost as much as the floaty chipmunk vocals do (seriously). "Your Lips Are Red" takes a much more serious turn with a grinding guitar riff, haunting harp plucks and an incredibly eeire, yet undeniably cool string part. Clark's lyricism is once again displayed in full force as she near-growls "Your lips are red. My face is red from needing your red lips." Eventually, the song builds into a much brighter affair where Clark sounds almost identical to Shara Worden.
The title track "Marry Me" is another light pop song, this time sounding curiously like Feist. However, even amongst beat-keeping hand claps, the instrumentation is just as impressive as it has been. "Paris Is Burning" is absolutely amazing track, that finds Annie singing "I'm on your side where nobody is" over an almost waltz-like composition. The guitars here are absolutely brilliant, and the song is arguably one of the album's best. My personal favorite, however is the following track, "All My Stars Aligned." Listening to it, I imagine being completely weightless, blowing about in the clouds. The song is so dreamlike, so perfect, that it's hard to imagine Clark ever topping it. She asks, "What was your question?" before affirming "Love is the answer." Genius.
The second half of the album is just as beautiful as the first. "The Apocalypse Song" is an absolutely gorgeous pop song whose heavy orchestration is only overshadowed by it's WTF-inducing breakdown. But Clark doesn't disappoint, bringing the chorus back for another go before ending the song. Amidst the rest of "Marry Me," "We Put A Pearl In the Ground" seems entirely out of place. At just over a minute long, this simple, yet stunning piano solo doesn't really go with the string orchestration or guitars it follows. At the same time, however, it is undeniably charming, sounding like a heartbreaking lullaby. The song essentially serves as a prelude to "Land Mines," but it completely outshines that song, in my opinion.
The album wraps up with the quirky, yet catchy "Human Racing" and the completely charming "What Me Worry?" In it, Annie asks the question "Do I amuse you dear? Would you think me queer if while standing beside you, I opted instead to disappear?" It seems like no time at all before she does, and the album closes.
Annie Clark has completely blown me away with "Marry Me." This is not only the best female solo album of 2007, but one of the best I've heard in the last decade. At times she can sound like so many different artists (Norah Jones, Feist, My Brightest Diamond, Regina Spektor, etc.), but at the same time she maintains a uniqueness about her that is not only endearing, but entirely brilliant. St. Vincent is a name you'll want to remember, whether it's just a stage name or not. Listening to "Marry Me" is like opening your eyes to a brand new day and realizing that the world is full of possibilities. It is refreshing. It is amazing. It is completely and utterly unforgettable!
Recommended for fans of My Brightest Diamond, Sufjan Stevens, and anyone who is ready to be blown away!

Josh Groban in Concert has all the ingredients to be a long-running PBS staple: a young (21), good-looking performer with a golden voice; songs in Italian and Spanish for the crossover crowd (i.e., Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman) and pop and movie songs for the mainstream; guest stars galore (David Foster, John Williams, Angie Stone, Andrea Corr, Lili Haydn); a large orchestra; and striking but not obtrusive visual effects. The centerpiece of this DVD-CD combo (also available in a DVD keepcase) is the 80-minute concert DVD, filmed in Pasadena in October 2002 and featuring numerous songs from Groban's debut CD, including "You're Still You," which catapulted him into stardom when he sang it on TV's Ally McBeal. There are also two new songs--the ballad "Broken Vow," with Groban accompanied by Foster, and "For Always," with the orchestra conducted by John Williams, who wrote the song for the Steven Spielberg film A.I..The 37-minute CD offers seven songs performed in the concert (including the two not on the previous CD, "Broken Vow" and "For Always"), plus "O Holy Night." The DVD has excellent picture and sound (PCM stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1, and DTS), interviews, and backstage footage, and the combination with the CD is an excellent value. Groban's fans, of course, will consider it a treasure at any price. --David Horiuchi

Kristin Chenoweth won a Tony for the supporting role of Sally Brown in the 1999 revival of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, made a memorably vampy Lily in the 1999 television film of Annie, and had an NBC sitcom created for her, Kristin! Now she grabs the spotlight in Let Yourself Go, her first solo recording. She mixes torchy standards ("My Funny Valentine," "How Long Has This Been Going On?") with Faith Prince-style sauciness ("If"), gets to show off her operatic and scat chops in the miniplay "The Girl in 14G," and shares a light duet with Jason Alexander (reviving his musical theater career post-Seinfeld). Perhaps her "Stranger Here Myself" isn't the weightiest you've ever heard, but this is an enjoyable album with a good deal of old-fashioned class, expertly accompanied by Rob Fisher and the Coffee Club Orchestra. --David HoriuchiCustomer Reviews:

M. Ward has been championed by Howe Gelb, who released Ward's 2000 debut disc Duet for Guitars #2 on his Ow Om label, and Conor Oberst, who brought Ward on the road with Bright Eyes. In 2001, Ward earned some small measure of acclaim for his sophomore effort, End of Amnesia, and if the Portland, Oregon-based songwriter keeps making records as inventive and thoroughly rewarding as this third album, he won't be unknown long. Full of snappy, loping pop tunes interwoven with mellow instrumental passages, Transfiguration of Vincent shows Ward to be a terrific folk and blues guitarist, a perceptive, witty storyteller, and--in tossing piano, percussion, harmonica, and various other instruments into mixes that never feel the least bit cluttered--an imaginative arranger. He's also an expressive vocalist, whether in a winsome upper register that recalls Ben Harper or his sandy-throated midrange. There's not a weak moment on this dark-horse gem of a disc. --Anders Smith LindallCustomer Reviews:
The One I Listen To When I Need Anything.......2006-04-28
Exceptionally honest music.......2005-09-09
This album, dealing with death (sometimes directly with Undertaker and Dead Man and sometimes indirectly) is poignant without being depressing, and the only complaint I could possibily have is that it's possibly too uplifting for a song dealing with the consequences of the death of a close friend/relative.
The production is perfect and the guitar work is great. The songwriting is sparse, but sometimes less is more.
I think the best tracks are "Helicopter" and "Vincent O'Brien". The David Bowie cover, if it wasn't so damn good, would be a poor fit with the overall album.
A Great CD.......2005-07-07
M Ward Transfigures Genres: Great Music.......2005-03-23
Sometimes crooning, sometimes strong, Ward's voice hovers between pointed focus and some dreamy oblivion. The music equally is not definable in one genre. One could say that this album is of a progressive/experimental folk style but even this seems limiting once you hear the music. It is evocative of some other time yet at the same time current.
Yes, M Ward delivers a great album with "Transfiguration of Vincent" if you are a fan of Uncle Tupelo, Tom Waits, Wilco or even Elliot Smith you should certainly appreciate this album. It is great background music for social events and also great quiet time music while also being great driving music. You'll like this album... Its Involuntary...

"All my life they told me 'you're pretty good for a girl,'" Rhonda Vincent sings on this album's title track--a sly dig at the notoriously patriarchal culture of bluegrass, and at critics who qualify her as a "female bluegrass singer." But like Alison Krauss and Dolly Parton (who adds harmony vocals to the rocking "Heartbreaker's Alibi"), Vincent is one of the elite artists in the genre--period. She's got the awards and Grammy nominations to prove it, but mostly she has her voice--a flawless, instantly recognizable instrument that releases all of the emotion from durable gospel standards like Roy Acuff's "Precious Jewel" and the more contemporary-styled "Forever Ain't That Long Anymore." And she's got her band, the Rage, who rip through train songs like "Rhythm of the Wheels" or instrumentals like "Ashes of Mt. Augustine," which serves to remind us what a hot mandolinist she can be. Along with the archetypal bluegrass themes of home, death, and country, Vincent also has current conflicts on her mind. She covers Byron Hill and Mike Dekle's "Till They Come Home," which captures the impact of war on military families, walking the line between patriotism and unquestioning nationalism. On "God Bless the Soldier," however, she crosses that line with a strained analogy between Christian and military sacrifice. But her sentiments are nothing if not genuine--and she's got the vocal and instrumental chops to bring those emotions all he way home. --Roy Kasten

It's not opera; it's not a pop concert; it's not Broadway. It's all of these and none of them. Once you accept the fact that this sequel to the original blockbuster concert recording is less about music and more about entertainment and the power of musical personalities, you can appreciate what you're hearing as an event--phenomenal and bizarre, momentous and frivolous. This is an occasion to celebrate the voices and egos of three huge superstars, and to have fun listening as Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, and Jose Carreras interact, bouncing lines off each other and playing to the overwhelmingly enthusiastic audience. Much of the fun and flavor of the concert is dependent on seeing the action, though, and without the visuals you notice flaws in the singing much more. Domingo comes off as the more solid performer, and his voice is in far better shape than the other two. But if you crave big, high, and loud--and you don't take your opera too seriously--you'll love this disc. --David VernierCustomer Reviews:

This event, like the first one in Rome, has a magnificent setting but, like Rome, the show was marketed mainly to the American audience. They still include the dreadful "Maria" with the hilarious pronunciation and even added "With a Song In My Heart" (or, as Carreras is wont to sing, "Weeth a Soeeng een My Haht"). Though some may deride the choice of encores, they were almost perfect. The Three Tenors, despite their prior celebrity, are creations of our culture of entertainment in ways that Caruso could only dream about.
Synopsis: Carreras stands out, Domingo substitutes volume for quality and Pavarotti soars when he doesn't have to.

With a generous selection of 20 songs spanning almost 70 minutes, this live album celebrates the energy and range of Rhonda Vincent's brand of progressive bluegrass. It also suggest the parallels and differences between Vincent's career and that of her friend Alison Krauss. Both Midwesterners were preteen musical prodigies, both have used bluegrass as a base to explore a variety of musical styles, both owe a vocal debt to Dolly Parton (whose "Jolene" receives an uptempo transformation here), and both lead virtuosic string bands capable of playing just about anything. The difference is that Krauss has continued to extend beyond her bluegrass base--and expand her audience in the process--while multi-instrumentalist Vincent has made a prodigal return to a rootsier brand of bluegrass, after some attempts at crossover country. This concert covers a lot of musical ground, from standards such as "Drivin' Nails in My Coffin" and "Muleskinner Blues" and bittersweet ballads like "Missouri Moon" and "You Can't Take It with You When You Go" to the spiritual strains of "So Happy I'll Be" and "Homecoming" and instrumentals that spotlight the dexterity of her band, the Rage. The crowd loves it all. --Don McLeeseAlbum Description

Live Bluegrass .......2007-03-23
This is Rhonda live with a collection of 20 songs ranging from cow chip-kicking numbers like "Kentucky Borderline," covers of Dolly Parton, "Jolene," and lovely ballads like "Missouri Moon" and "Ghost of a Chance." She's backed up by a four man band, The Rage, with banjo, fiddle, guitar, and bass. Vincent plays the mandolin. Just about every number is good and the patter between songs is warm. I saw Vincent live once and she has a pleasant spark and bubble, although I slightly resent her commercial plugs for her sponsor, Martha White flour. Other members of her band sing a few songs in the high lonesome style typical of bluegrass. The best song on the CD: "The Last Best Chance" -- a slow, sad, song with a violin, rather than a fiddle, a well-picked guitar and a lovely contemporary sound. Second best: "Muleskinner's Blues" -- a traditional hoot and holler toetapper.
If you don't know bluegrass very well this would be a good CD to start with. Not as well known to the general public as Allison Kraus, Vincent has a more powerful and twangy voice than Kraus. I took a look at her website. Boy, she is a hell of a road musician with more than 100 dates scheduled for the rest of this year and gigs from Switzerland to every corner of the Union.

"Let's rock again!" Gene Vincent screams in his signature rocker, "Be Bop-A-Lula," and throughout this 20-song document of the first heady year of his career, he and the Blue Caps (surely, the greatest rockabilly band ever) do just that, again and again, rocking with controlled abandon--though just barely controlled. Guitarist Cliff Gallup rips off insane riffs that are the perfect match for Vincent's own pinched wail, in songs that are either scary ("Race with the Devil"), or flat amazed ("Who Slapped John?"), or nothing but the beat, the beat, the beat ("Cat Man"). All of it will leave you convinced that the title is an understatement. --David CantwellCustomer Reviews:

I agree with Timothy in that it's a shame Gene Vincent isn't mentioned in the same sentence with Elvis or Buddy Holly. He was as good as if not superior.
I discovered Gene Vincent in the 90's and was hooked immediately. This guy could rock! His audio recordings are so full of life that one can only imagine how it was to see him perform live.
