5 out of 5 stars The Price Club.......2005-04-28

"I am here," said Leontyne Price when interviewed as she opened the new Metropolitan Opera with Samuel Barber's underrated ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, "and you will know that I am the best and will hear me. The color of my skin or the kink of my hair or the spread of my mouth has nothing to do with what you are listening to." Back in the 1960s Price was one of the greatest divas in all of opera, and it wasn't just her voice but her magnificent stage presence, combined with her social activism. All of the above come into play in this collection of secular songs and ditties, some of them traditional plantation chanties and others, art songs and a scattering of pop music. And some of them, like Gershwin's "Summertime," cross the ever-permeable boundaries between Broadway and classical. These recordings were made at different times in Price's career, and her voice, while always angelic, has different shadings and reaches a different range of timbre in each separate recording date, but there is no question that, as time goes by, she is able to impart a richness of life experience noticeably absent from some of her earlier work.

"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.

5 out of 5 stars A living legend.......2005-03-10

Leontyne Price (still alive) and already passing into immortality amongst vocal artists, both classical and popular. Leontyne Price stands at the pinnacle of her classical art, but those who only know her work in La Forza del destino or the Verdi Requiem are in for a heart rending treat with this album where Leontyne Price goes home to her roots in Mississippi and gives an unabashed account of the classic spirituals she sang as a young woman. Like John Mc Cormacks rendering of Irish songs there is a personal longing and devotion expressed here that reveals a side of the artist not known in the bulk of their "classical" repetoire. A sense of going home like Citizen Kane's rosebud, or as Dorothy Gale observes at the end of the Wizard of Oz "everything I could ever have wanted was right in my own backyard "

1 out of 5 stars not your daddy's old timey spiritual.......2004-06-23

Agreed this is a good cd for a beautiful voice, but this is not, repeat not, for someone who wants to hear that old-timey religious fervor that you think of when you've been to a Black Baptist hand-clapping, standing, swaying, and singing service.

5 out of 5 stars Immaculate Vocals of Leontyne Price.......2003-12-31

IMMACULATE, SUPERB vocal range and style! There's no other words that can complement Miss Leontyne Price's vocal arrangements. Miss Price's voice is strong, and shrills very nicely to the instruments played on many songs listed on this double CD which is a joy to treasure; every song listed are songs I was raised to hearing and singing. Miss Price is the reason why many of these songs remain in popularity and presently used. Miss Leontyne Price has been incredible in many of her past performances. This is my fourth CD of Miss Price and I am glad to own this particular CD forever and ever. Many thanks to the executors who found this remarkable album and upgraded it to a CD format! **Angi**

4 out of 5 stars Great Gospel Stuff.......2001-04-12

This is a great CD. The only problem I have with it is that on some of the selections there is a boy's choir screaming in the background, and this takes away (a bit) from her performance. That said, her best selections are those that are either unaccompanied or those where her voice is not buried. Songs that strike me are - His Name So Sweet, He's Got The Whole World, Were You There, I Wonder as I Wander, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and my all time favourite Summertime. Enough said.

Keith Lockhart might very well be the Backstreet Boy of classical music. With good looks, a ton of energy, and--most importantly--popular appeal, he leads the Boston Pops Orchestra through disc after disc of Americana compositions (and the odd Celtic title). A Splash of Pops is more of the same. The Boston Pops get downright patriotic by playing everything from Paul Simon's "America" to "Boogie-Woogie Bugle Boy," along with a few classical compositions (for example, Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture). It's a light affair loaded with saccharine energy, but a few surprises (the overture to State Fair and the new "With Voices Raised," commissioned from the authors of Ragtime: the Musical) are thrown in to keep things interesting. For another sampling of Americana-based classical music, fans should seek out Leonard Bernstein conducting Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring with the New York Philharmonic. It's one of America's greatest recordings and a truer testament to the country's musical wealth. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars? More like 50 stars!.......2003-06-16

Keith Lockhart has continued behind the heels of John Williams at the helm of the Boston Pops Orchestra in extraordinary fashion since 1995. Anyone who has been privileged to see him conduct the Boston Pops can feel the enthusiasm he has for the orchestra's traditions and legacy- and for classical music. This theme certainly holds true for this CD. I have been collecting a set of good CDs for my 4th of July outdoor parties for the past few years and this one delivers in grand style.

I purchased this CD shortly after its release. The jewel cover alone will put a smile on your face and set the tone for summer's light-hearted, relaxed attitude. The front cover picture is of Mr. Lockhart, complete in tuxedo, splashing into a pool of water and the back cover picture of him in a BPO t-shirt and Hawaiian shirt being kissed by a stuffed clown fish he's holding with a pair of barbecue tongs. Fun, fun, fun! Bravo, Mr. Lockhart!

All the "classics" one would expect to hear for the patriotic holiday are here: "The Star Spangled Banner and "America The Beautiful (The Tanglewood Festival Chorus singing these two songs will give you the chills), "The 1812 Overture" (I can almost "see" the fireworks as BPO plays the finale), and "The Stars And Stripes Forever" (One cannot pass through the 4th of July without hearing at least one John Phillip Sousa song!).

The rest of the album is equally as entertaining with goodies like "Boogie-Woogie Bugle Boy." Others will also rouse your patriotic fevor such as: "Doodletown Fifers" (Fifes on the 4th? Of course!) and "America" (Paul Simon's wonderful song.) One of my favorites is "With Voices Raised." The Boston Pops plays background as the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, The Boston Pops Choir, and The Boston Gay Men's Choir sing and speak eloquent quotes from famous Americans as Abigal Adams, Martin Luther King, Fredrick Douglas, President John F. Kennedy, and Shirley Chisholm.

I have collected five CDs that get playtime over Independence Day through the day and evening. Ever since I purchased "Splash of Pops," though, it seems to get a bit more airing each year. You'll be dazzled and feel proud, happy, and content everytime you listen to it. Mr. Lockhart has produced some wonderful albums with the Pops Orchestra and he has certainly continued with this collection of songs.

5 out of 5 stars America's Best Proove It.......2000-06-19

This is truly a Boston Pops recording at its best. Keith Lockhart and the Pops are definetly my favorite Orchestra, and with this CD I am reminded of exactly why. This Orchestra brings to life the power and passion that was ment in the writing of this music. I especially like "Lift Every Voice and Sing." The Pops and the Chorus truly bring out the joy and pain felt by African Americans throughout the years. And I also very much enjoy "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy." Few Orchestras can swing like the Pops.

All in all if you love the power and emotion of Orchestras, than you will love hearing America's Orchestra earn its name. Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Orchestra out do themselves this time.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievably totally terriffic.......1999-08-18

This is almost a good as being in Symphony Hall in Boston or on the Esplanade with the stars overhead. The quality is outstanding; you are there! A must have especially if you like patriotic song. Don't hesitate...run!

5 out of 5 stars Keith does it again! A definate winner!.......1999-08-07

Bravo! The young and handsome Keith Lockhart is wonderful. Not only does he look adorable on the c.d. covers, but he is also bringing even more poularity to this already famous ensemble. I always look forward to seeing his fourth of July program on t.v. and now I get to hear it any time I want to. This is the third album of him conducting the B.P.O. I own and I'll keep buying them. This is the ultimate album for Americans and patriotic folk. I strongly recommend it to all as a fan of Keith and a faithful New Englander (even though I now reside in the south).

I don't understand the fascination with this young conductor. Everything he's doing has been done better by Erich Kunzel. If your not familier with Kunzel's work then try his name in amazon's search engine. He's made over 60 albums, most of them for Telarc, an American record company that makes the best sounding cd's available today

      4 out of 5 stars Real music.......2003-11-05

I don't have much to add to the previous review, except that I didn't find the music an acquired taste. For those of us who grew up in the 60s, this CD has that whacked-out quality we all know and love combined with the complex and unhackneyed playing we all love and would like to know more of. How long can you listen to a choir singing "la la la"? I've been listening a long time. In addition to Andrew Hill I particularly liked Bernie Maupin's sax -- invigorating and intelligent.

4 out of 5 stars Another obscure, unique Andrew Hill outing gets reissued.......2001-02-18

Andrew Hill was never afraid to combine seemingly disparate influences during his recording sessions. This has made tracking down and exploring his music a personal crusade for a number of us. However, Andrew Hill isn't among the most easily digestable musicians, resulting in a lack of recognition for his innovations and beautiful playing. This unique session is certainly a welcome reissue for those of us not around to pick it up on vinyl when it was originally released back around 1970.

The original "Lift Every Voice" session is essentially a jazz quintet coupled with a mid-sized jazz (?) choir. This CD reissue augments that session with another one featuring slightly different personnel, but with the same basic format. Before hearing this CD I was both quite excited to hear how Hill could incorporate a choir into his compositions, and at the same time leery if I would actually like it. And while I must say the music on this CD is an acquired taste even for my adventurous ears, after repeated listens it all flows together and is both novel and beautiful.

What I found most amazing about the music on "Life Every Voice" was how many different musical genres I was reminded of even within a single piece. At various times the music feels like gospel, big band, classical minimalism, straight ahead bop, or avant-garde jazz. And while I wouldn't say the improvisation or compositions on this disc make it a definitive session, Andrew Hill is certainly in top form. Additionally, I found myself quite impressed with the tenor sax of Carlos Garnett, a musician I was previously not familiar with.

For someone looking for an introduction to Andrew Hill I would suggest starting with "Point of Departure", but for anyone looking to supplement their collection I heartily recommend picking this disc up. Its one of the true few gems in the post-Alfred Lion Blue Note era.

Tenor saxophonist and flutist Charles Lloyd's music has been a healing force in jazz ever since his historic Forest Flower recording of the mid-'60s with Jack DeJohnette and Keith Jarrett. As fate would have it, he was booked at New York's Blue Note club on September 11, 2001. Lloyd, for those who were lucky enough to see him that week, literally bathed the audience with his Coltranean sounds of love. This double-CD, with pianist Geri Allen, bassists Larry Grenadier and Marc Johnson, guitarist John Abercrombie, and drummer Billy Hart, beautifully captures the serene vibe of the Blue Note engagement. Lloyd's ethereal sax tones sing sweetly over a number of spirituals, such as "Amazing Grace," "Go Down Moses," and the title track, which was written by James Weldon Johnson and was known as "The Negro National Anthem." There's also a mournful rendition of Billy Strayhorn's "Blood Count" and a rejuvenating take on Marvin Gaye's soulful "What's Going On." On all of the selections Lloyd shows that jazz soothes, as well as grooves. --Eugene Holley Jr.

        5 out of 5 stars Spiritual Elevation.......2003-12-31

This is a very special album indeed. Its a long wait as ECM records are somewhat a rarity at this part of the world. Charles Lloyd's Lift every voice isn't an average recording, in the league of his previous works ever sincere and ever soul moving. I couldn't agree that he is Coltrane in the 2nd being but Lloyd at 1st in his own right. The rendition of Amazing Grace to Marvin Gaye's Whats Going on has a sense of individuality yet recalls the familiarity of the numbers. I find this album edging towards experimentation with the addition of Marc Johnson and without Brad Mehldau. What I would love to hear is Tenor Sax: Charles Lloyd, Piano: Ahmad Jamal, Guitar: Pat Matheny, DB bass: Charlie Haden, Drums: Billy Higgins anyway just a wild thought...

Lift every voice is a keeper on my collection and could be well renamed as Lift every soul. I am glad to have been elevated again. Mr Lloyd thank you for the music.

        5 out of 5 stars Uplifting Masterpiece.......2003-11-19

Charles Lloyd and his superb group will take you on a journey with this 2cd set.The essence of each song is found as each musician weaves in and out effortlessly--allowing the listener to hear the song as a whole or a statement.Lloyd selections are spirituals, pop hits, originals, and 2 Silvio Rodriquez songs. One of which is Te Amare which has a beautiful melody churned forward by the group as a whole-as close to an ecstatic state as music can take you.Of special interest on this album is John Abercrombie's guitar playing--it is masterful--everything he does builds, supports, and betters his leader. Lloyd is definitely on to something with this music recorded after Sept 11--it is music of peace--but it is something even more.It is a musician making music from heart and soul--it really just seems to come poring out--There is no Ego in this music--And that is what music should be.

5 out of 5 stars The Coltrane Legacy.......2003-10-08

Charles Lloyd has consistently worked within the parameters developed by John Coltrane in formulating a spiritually-oriented, introspective jazz form that incorporates ideas from various ethnic musics. However, he should not be seen as an imitator but a brilliant and soulful interpretor in the Coltrane tradition -- no less than any great player in any traditional music form. Lloyd has a lot of heart and a wide range of musical ideas to draw upon, and that really comes through in this superb recording.

        5 out of 5 stars Deep Jazz.......2003-10-01

What a run of absolutely sublime albums: "Voice in the Night," "The Water is Wide," "Hyperion with Higgins," and now, "Lift Every Voice." Lloyd is the deepest tenor player since Coltrane. Hell, he's among most profound living instrumentalists in any genre. Anouar Brahem's oud; Miles's trumpet; Trane's tenor; Maxim Vengerov's violin; Ravi Shankar's sitar; Rostropovich's cello; Toumani Diabate's kora. Lloyd's tenor is on this list. (Sorry, I realize that Miles and Trane aren't living--but I couldn't not include them). What Lloyd does with this mix of spirituals, pop tunes and originals is simultaneously to lift them up and to dig deeply into them (in much the same way Billie did with much more banal material). Its been said of Beethoven's late String Quartets that they're "beyond music." Surely, Lloyd's music takes us beyond our everyday realm to a place where all is joyous and serene.

5 out of 5 stars Lift every listener.......2003-03-18

Nothing more can be added that hasn't already been said about this transcendant work. This is more of a plug to see Charles live if you get a chance. I saw him last night for his birthday at L.A.'s Jazz Bakery and it lifted me way up there. It was more of a group meditation than a concert. Similarly this is more of a prayer circle than a CD. We could all use more of those right now.

5 out of 5 stars An American classic.......2001-01-21

This seminal recording is a must for the library of anyone serious in the study of American music. William Grant Still, often lauded as the "Dean of African American Composers," is among the most distinguished composers in the United States, regardless of his race. This anthology of his work explores his contribution to small scale genres, namely chamber music and song. Having been deeply enamored of the human voice, his music is imbued with lyricism for every instrument.

In this recording, Robert Honeysucker is a stand-out performer. His rich, vibrant baritone is perfectly suited to the rigourous requirements of Still's "Songs of Separation." Lynn Chang and Vivian Taylor perform Still's "Suite for Violin and Piano" with style and panache. The pathos and passion of Still's life can be discerned from the second movement of this work, in particularly.

5 out of 5 stars heartfelt, well written music.......2003-05-12

This CD is worth getting for the sincere, emotional writing which is often very beautiful. I especially like the choral works, but the organ symphony has many powerful moments as well. A fine tribute to a composer who was tragically snuffed out before his time!
