More good Flanagan.......2006-02-11
This is a very enjoyable trio session from 1978. Flanagan displays his mastry as always, and the tune selections includes compositions by Monk, Horace Silver, and Wes Montgomery. One interesting inclusion is the use of electric piano, which I hadn't heard him do before.

Classics with a Jazzy Pulse.......2005-07-07
Burton and Ozone perform a splendidly diverse variety of classics alongside some newer tunes considered classics in their own right. Tombeau de Couperin, Rachmaninoff's Prelude, Scarlatti's Sonata, and the Lakmé Medley do not merely use a melody and chord changes as inspiration for a "head chart," but rather delve inside the original songs for a new twist. The Sonata particularly shows off the duo's ingenuity in finding a new interpretation that respects the old melody.
The newer pieces (such as Milonga, the Confrey Impromptu and the Gershwin pieces) do not belittle themselves as "lesser classics," but Ozone and Burton respect them as equals to the other pieces. The final piece, though not destined to be a classic of its own, is a pensive reflection on the "classics" which echoes the voice the duo found inside many of the other pieces. Overall, a charmingly novel album perfect for lovers of jazz and classical music alike.
A marvelous blend.......2002-11-27
This Burton-Ozone collaboration has produced a record that deserves to be timeless. It is a marvelous blend of the classical and jazz traditions. The spirit of the classical composers represented on the disc comes through in a refreshing way, brilliantly interpreted by these two superb musicians. This will be my favorite record from the year 2002, no question about it.
"wonderful marriage between Classical and Jazz...Concord!".......2002-03-12
Two genres appease my appetite for today's music CLASSICAL and JAZZ...so it's no
wonder this latest Concord release hits the spot to satisfy my craving...featuring Gary
Burton(vibes) and Makoto Ozone(piano), performing the works of Barber, Bonilla, Brahms,
Cardoso, Confrey, Delibes, Gershwin, Rachmaninoff, Scarlatti and even Ozone composed
his "SOMETHING BORROWED, SOMETHING BLUE", mesmerizing with haunting
overtones, a perfect ending to this classic event.
Each piece mirrors the harmonies of both classical and jazz, through the musicianship of each
artists...much care has been taken to present various tempo and moods...from Latin,
Brazilian, Swing, Tango leaning toward polished styles that will amaze and enlightened the
listener...each selection has tremendous improvisation, with some Blues thrown in for good
measure(now we're cooking).
A big thank you to Concord Jazz, Gary Burton(producer), Glen Barros and John
Burk(executive producers)...a wonderful and exciting album for all jazz and classical fans
alike...just listen and study this one-of-a-kind project...hope to see more in the future...this is
a totally satisfying CD, a must have for anyone who plays an instrument or just enjoys GOOD
MUSIC!

something borrowed, something blue.......2004-06-23
I bought this album (CD) after hearing one track on WBGO. I had never heard of Jerry Vivino, and neither did my husband, who is a musician. We were both amazed at the sound of all the musicians, the content, the vocalists and the general enthusiasm exuded by this group. Looking forward to more from Jerry Vivino.
Good sax jazz.......2001-05-17
This is pleasant, easy jazz. The female singer is a standout; incredibly soulful. Jerry is the brother of guitarist Jimmy Vivino and New Jersey TV personality Floyd Vivino.

Analog meets digital. A definite buy for those interested in the other side of europe's dub translation.
teutonic reggae.......2004-08-08
Everything on Scape (Pole/Stefan Betke's label) has been good but this is definitely one of the stand out records. In a similar vein as the earlier Pole material with the whole dub foundation, but different enough to constitute it's own thing. In my opinion this is what a lot of people are trying to do with the integration of the organic/electronic sound, but this just nails it. Buy it.

It only gets better and better........2007-06-05
Amanda Rogers' latest EP, 'Something Borrowed, Something Blue', will only leave you wanting more. Her three previously unreleased originals, and two revamped cover songs, prove her continual growth as a singer/songwriter. Looking forward to hearing what she's cooking up next...
Sporadic recordings = sad day.......2005-10-26
I've been an enormous fan of Ms. Rogers' since I first discovered her in January, at a show no less. Every release of hers blows me away, her songwriting talent is just unheard of for someone so young. Such amazing vocals, so hushed and sincere. I found this EP by nothng short of a miracle (at a Hastings in the middle of Kansas. Craziness.) and promptly threw my body at it. It completed my collection, though honestly, that's about all it really did for me. The three originals were decent, but recorded sporadically and in pieces over periods of up to several years, and the final product shows it. (Maybe it doesn't help that it was mixed on a tour bus during Warped Tour over the summer?) Lyrically each song is up to par, but each song simple suffers from unevenness of production. The covers certainly are interesting, especially the opening "1980," originally by At the Drive-In. But there just isn't enough to this record to make me feel it was truly worth it to even release, and this from a die-hard fan. A few more songs would have been nice, five songs at nineteen minutes just felt stunted.
Moral - solid songwriting cannot overcome poor producing and recording techniques!
