4 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Beautiful.......2007-05-07

The first time I heard this artist was on an instructional DVD for hot stone healing. I couldn't believe how hauntingly beautiful her voice and the music was. I wanted more and had to find out who she was. I did and immediately purchased the CD. The same song repeats throughout the entire CD, with minor variations and for some that may not be what you are looking for. It is very nice for a healing practice or meditation or if you are looking for beautiful vocals that follow you through your day.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-02-28

I first heard this CD in my prenatal yoga class -- it was perfect for our meditative portion of the class. I loved it so much I used it during the birth of our son and it became his favorite cd for getting to his restful place before bedtime. At 2, he now asks for his "yoga music" almost nightly which gives me a chance to enjoy it and take me to a peaceful place with him as I rock him to sleep.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome recording.......2007-01-21

I like Jennifer Berezan's recordings. "Returning" is something I stumbled on when purusing used CDs at a store. I often listen to it when I'm going to sleep at night. I have also played it during gatherings of people for contemplative and shared prayer. It helps me center myself and connect to the energy of life and love.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Transformative Chant .......2007-01-09

This beautiful CD was recorded partially in Malta, in a man-made underground chamber designed exclusively for its perfect acoustics. The result is a warm, ethereal drone that reverberates throughout the hour-long chant, perfectly complemented by the goddess chants recorded over it.

Each chant comes from a different religion and culture. There is a song to Yemaya, the Yoruba goddess of the sea and rebirth; a Navajo chant to Mother Earth (my personal favorite); A Buddhist mantra to the Bodhisattva of Compassion; and a beautiful line of Alaap singing, a form of Hindi song-prayer. Each voice in this recording is pure and emotionally on-target, and nothing about any of their roles in this piece seems tacked-on or forced.

The combination of all of these elements is soothing and nurturing, just the way a piece centering on "returning to the mother of us all" should be. I recommend it to anyone with a meditation practice, healers, and even just anyone who needs help relaxing at night.

5 out of 5 stars Transformative inner journey.......2007-01-06

Returning is a magical experience. As the chants echo, you are transported on a transformative inner journey. I use this CD for healing work, ritual and ceremony, and women's circles. It is hypnotic and profoundly beautiful. It reminds us all that what we long for is a return to the Earth Mother. This music cradles you in Her embrace.

This music is very easy listening and very peaceful. It would be good music to meditate too, as well as just playing it around the house.

5 out of 5 stars Life-giving music.......2007-01-21

After I stumbled on "Returning" by Jennifer Berezan, a friend turned me on to "Praises for the World." This is truly a passionate recording of various voices and instruments. I feel connected to the energy of life and love when I listen to this. Have purchased it for other friends and they enjoy it very much. Keep on recording, Jennifer!

5 out of 5 stars Great for studying, meditating, or just relaxing!.......2005-11-14

The back cover of the CD says, "File under world music, new age, women's, healing, meditation, vocal, ambient." Any of those will do just fine, but in my collection, it goes under "when you have to relax!" It is a wonderfully relaxing hour or so of music, sure to carry you off to any tranquil corner of your mind that you like once you put it on and close your eyes. Replete with guest vocalists and nature sounds over a mellow guitar arpeggio, the songscape consists primarily of gentle repetitions of the title line. Only the first four minutes or so are outside of that mold, featuring a three-verse song of healing and love for the Earth, which then segues neatly into the main event. Later in the piece, Alice Walker recites her poem "We Have A Beautiful Mother" over the music. This might be a bit much for some listeners, but if not, you'll love the whole CD. Pleasant dreams!

5 out of 5 stars absolutely incredible.......2003-10-23

profoundly beautiful, dangerously addictive, marvelously uplifting, my favorite of Berezan's albums, and I have loved all of her work. The harmonies are celestial and hypnotic.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2003-08-31

I've given this CD along with "Returning" to friends and they love them too. Its a great CD - I find myself singing along, getting lost in the music and harmony. The CD is one long song that evolves and changes yet has "praises for the world" running through it as the undercurrent. Absolutely fanstastic.

What a blast from the past. Wham! really sang some great songs.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......2006-02-28

I really like the cd but there are 2 things about this cd/order that has really upset me with Amazon. #1, When the cd arrived t omy home, the cd case was cracked somewhat. I feel Amazon should replace the cd case. #2, I changed credit cards before I placed this order yet Amazon still took it out of my actual checking account instead of my Capital One account.

2 out of 5 stars +1/2, Not a proper album, but a decent compilation.......2005-08-16

The last release from the Wham duo isn't really a full-fledged album, and is actually more of a semi-compilation of previously-released recordings that had yet to appear on a Wham album and three newly-recorded songs. The new tracks include the energetic hit "The Edge of Heaven" (#10 US, #1 UK), the underrated flop "Where Did You Heart Go?" (#50 Pop), and the cool album track "Battle Stations." Also included are the three single-only releases from the past two years - the holiday-themed "Last Christmas" (#2 UK), the terrific "I'm Your Man" (#3 US, #1 UK), and George Michael's solo ballad "A Different Corner" (#7 US, #1 UK). Unfortunately, the classic "I'm Your Man" is presented in a frankly horrible remix that drains most of the energy out of this high-octane track. The only other two tracks are an okay live recording of the song "Blue" and a decent remix of the "Wham Rap." Even though it really isn't a proper album per se, Music from the Edge of Heaven collected enough hits and worthy tracks to peak at #10 on the Hot 200, and is worth picking up if you're a fan of the duo.

5 out of 5 stars A Teens review.......2005-06-26

Yum! This cd is sizzling! The first half of the album pumps you up with happy upbeat songs and then you cool down for the last half! I like Wham's first two albums a little bit better than this one; However, no group can ever compare to Wham and this cd is still better than any other groups cd in the world EVER!!!! If you are a true Wham fan (Who isn't?) then buy this! This album will give you chills because it is so creative and fun! I wish Wham was still together and touring because I wasn't alive when they were together! Buy this album baby! And all you teens out there should listen to 80s music, it is so much better than the music of today!

4 out of 5 stars George Michael says "Goodbye Wham! Hello, solo career!".......2005-04-25

After the mega-selling MAKE IT BIG (1984), one would think a band like Wham! would feel the need to keep the streak going for as long as possible, even if personal tensions were chipping away at their foundations. However, it was perhaps already obvious that George Michael was the true star of the group, especially since most of the original material was coming from him, and it was likely he could not care a whit about superstardom because that detracted from artistic development. With Andrew Ridgeley more interested in becoming a pop star and George thinking otherwise, a break-up was inevitable, and 1986's MUSIC FROM THE EDGE OF HEAVEN was their way of bidding their fans farewell.

While providing the world with a proper goodbye was all well & good, maybe Wham! had no more fine material left in the can for their swan song only has 3 real new songs out of 8, with the remaining being live tracks, single updates, and George's first "solo" songs. There is no denying the quality of the music at hand, but the patchwork nature of HEAVEN makes it far from an essential purchase until after one has gotten MAKE IT BIG and perhaps 1983's FANTASTIC, if one cares to see what George was up to at the top of his career.

Unable to replicate MAKE IT BIG's feat of 4 top 10 hits, the 3 top 10 singles are great to have on HEAVEN, although they are certainly not the primary reason for buying the album. "I'm Your Man" was released late in 1985 after the adulation from MAKE IT BIG had died down, and was a marked improvement over the merely catchy pop of that album. This song had more of an honest-to-goodness dance-club quality to it, one crying for remixes from any & everyone. While in fact only 6 minutes instead of 8, "I'm Your Man" still provides an ample amount of time for getting your groove on, and those who bought MAKE IT BIG probably agreed enough to send the song to #3 in early 1986. Clearly, Wham!'s farewell was still going to be a profitable one.

George's first official solo song came next with "A Different Corner", a misty ballad once again showing the stock in trade that would provide the finest moments on 1987's FAITH. You can practically hear George's heart breaking upon hearing this song, something that would occur again on "One More Try", making this one sort of a dry run for that masterpiece. With just an unobtrusive drum machine backing him, George portrays an impressive amount of heartache for someone who was still only 23 years old at the time. With "A Different Corner" making it to #7, it was clear George's solo jaunt was off to a fine start.

The fact that single was credited just to George Michael had to have alerted fans the end was nigh, but Wham! was not finished just yet. "The Edge Of Heaven" was the group's official goodbye, reaching #10, and harking back to the happy-go-lucky style of MAKE IT BIG with a bouncy atmosphere that was so contagious, one could easily forget for a while that this was the end of Wham! as we knew it. One of George's childhood musical idols, Elton John, plays piano on this song, although you will have to listen carefully for his contribution. Having sung with Elton on "Wrap Her Up" and "Nikita" the previous year, George clearly had someone big in his corner for going solo.

What else is there besides those singles to recommend MUSIC FROM THE EDGE OF HEAVEN? Not much, but even those small highlights are what make it essential. "Blue" had been recorded during Wham!'s groundbreaking tour of China, and the lilting Latin elements of the tune make it apparent that regardless of his teen idol status, George still thought like an adult both musically & lyrically. Why on Earth this song was never properly recorded is beyond me. Obviously, the audience at the concert loved the song & George gave his all to it.

"Where Did Your Heart Go?" may have been a cover (the surefire sign that a band was running out of musical gas), but the way George sang this smoky Was [Not Was] number, he truly left the original version in the dust. Whereas "Careless Whisper" on MAKE IT BIG showed that he was growing into a superb balladeer, "Where Did Your Heart Go?" made it even more apparent, with George's occasionally aching falsetto ranges enough to bring a tear to your eye. Both were songs geared to their teenage audience's parents as well as their kids, proving that George could truly appeal beyond the typical teen-pop norm. Truly Wham!'s final single, it only made it to #50, but still remains among George Michael's finest works.

"Battlestations" returns to the dysfunctional relationships of "Everything She Wants" and "Credit Card Baby" with another song showing that love in the 1980s had little to do with romance & commitment. The way George sings about his situation, you wonder what the two saw in each other to begin with besides each other's bodies. One would be a fool not to dance like a madman to the song, which leans more to the legitimate dance club scene just like "I'm Your Man".

"Wham! Rap `86" was a redo of Wham!'s first-ever single from 1983, and truly sticks out like a sore thumb alongside the more adult numbers on HEAVEN, seeing as how the immaturity of the song was an element George had clearly grown away from in the 3 years since. Try as he may, George certainly did not help the cause of rap music being for White artists, too. Not when we had the Beastie Boys coming up with more street credibility in their middle finger than George had in his whole body.

The sad goodbye of MUSIC FROM THE EDGE OF HEAVEN truly bids farewell with "Last Christmas", which, by seeing its recording date of November 1984, was a song either not thought worthy of a release or was intended for Wham!'s follow-up to MAKE IT BIG whenever that came along. Once more with a heavy heart & a chip on his shoulder the size of an aircraft carrier, George laments having been abandoned by his lover on a joyous holiday like Christmas, and the sleigh bells are a nicely perverse touch. I am not sure if George intended this song to be covered by anyone else, for his performance is that personal, but "Last Christmas" certainly has been several times over by a diverse range of artists, from Hilary Duff to Jimmy Eat World!

Whether their fans truly knew it or not, by 1986, the ride that Wham! had been on for a short 2 years was coming to an end as all involved knew that it was George Michael who was willing to give the sweat needed to stay in the game. MUSIC FROM THE EDGE OF HEAVEN is unfortunately like most posthumous albums released after a band has called it quits, too disjointed & scattered to truly function as a legitimate artistic statement. Individually, the songs may have had some overall worth to recommend themselves, but the album was obviously a case of the parts being worth more than the sum. Who knew that from this uneven affair would rise one of the 1980s most ubiquitous & timeless musical personalities?

David Helpling's sophomore effort fulfills the promise of his first CD, Between Green and Blue. The guitarist is still influenced by Patrick O'Hearn, sharing the same penchant for smoldering, sensual rhythms and simple yet highly evocative melodies. He arranges it all on guitar and synthesizers, although it's often difficult to tell which is which. Helpling sends his guitar through a stream of effects and delays, using volume swells to mask its attack, turning his stringed instrument into an ambient orchestra. Across sequencer rhythm loops that sound like a pan-ethno drum troupe floating in space, Helpling layers surging synth pads draped with simple melodies that create a moody, cinematic expanse. Because he's a guitarist, Helpling has a natural sense of phrasing that eludes many keyboardists in this area of melodic electronics. --John Diliberto

5 out of 5 stars sublime.......2007-02-26

For several years now, I have been playing this music to go to sleep to. My wife and I rely on it to usher us into dreamland each night. There are not many recordings out there that can serve do that! and it stands the test of time

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting Music.......2006-10-27

This music has depth and beauty that I rarely get to experience, The musical ideas develop throughout each of the pieces as well as the album as a whole. The songs seems to spring from a well of energy and have an almost magical quality that keeps you relaxed, yet engaged, The pieces are melodic and rhythmic enough that you don't drift off into a mindless trance. This is excellent music to work to, the music keeps you energized and focused on your work. It also great to listen to if you want to sit down and enjoy an album from start to finish.

5 out of 5 stars A magnum opus .......2006-10-11

Brilliant album, one of the best new age albums ever recorded. The track #4 Divine Whisper is my favorite, an amazing song that is like a great story being told of a mysterious and grand journey.

I have listened to many new age and ambient albums, and this one ranks near the top. Almost every song is masterfully composed. It's a dark themed music with subtle and intricate melodies.

I don't know why this album doesn't seem to get the attention it deserves, but it's assuredly a landmark masterwork in new age music.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Put ..........2006-09-15

To avoid repeating the praises mentioned thus far, I'll just keep this short. Simply put, this is hands down, bar none, the most ELEGANT sounding CD I've ever heard in my life. I'm a huge ambient music fan and "Sleeping on the Edge of the World" continues to stand out in my library, and is among one of my all time favorites. I'll make sure they bury me with this one so I can take it with me to the great beyond.

5 out of 5 stars Paradise in a dark unknown realm.......2005-01-27

David Helpling's sophomore follow-up to his debut album "Between Green and Blue" is a major artistic leap forward. Where as his first CD borrowed the 1980s keyboard styles of Patrick O'Hearn, on SOTEOTW, there is less of the O'Hearn influenced and a far more of a distinctive sound all of his own on this album.

The mix of dark moods in a positive sense is absolutely exotic and out of this world.

The dark mysterious journey through the foggy terrain begins with the eerie spiritually arousing opener entitled "Rain Falls". A dark and mysterious ambient intro begins which conveys the sense of a twilight drizzly cloudy evening and gradually builds up into an exotic track with a sound that is utterly distinctive style altogether. While it is somewhat O'Hearn influenced, this one finds Helpling with a style all of his own.

Excellent music as background during prayer services, personal prayer or meditation, etc. Soothing, gentle melody remains consistent without any distracting highs or lows.

A beautiful and healthy kind of music to listen to. It even calms down my son' asthma!

5 out of 5 stars More Great Hilary Stagg!.......2005-08-02

If you like harp and/or New Age music, titles by Hilary Stagg are for you. In addition to this album, I also own Dream Spiral and Sweet Return. Beautiful harp playing. Definitely satisfies the harp lover in you!

5 out of 5 stars Other Dimensional Acoustic Harp Music.......2004-06-23

Like raindrops falling on a lightly drizzling day ... the plucked notes of the acoustic harp create mysterious melodies and a smooth soothing peaceful milieu. Occasionally, the rhythm and speed intensifies, adding pleasant emotional waves of listening pleasure as the notes wash over the listener, like the waves spashing onto the shore, sometimes softly, other times with more force. Keyboard synthesizers add colorful musical interludes and enhancements. There are exhilarating flights of fantastic music that rise and fall in rhythmic exhaltation of life. The dance of particle, energy, and sound are in vibrational harmony ... all is well in the universe. Like infinite fractals, the music is a never ending pattern of beauty and grace, resonating with the heart of the listener. Erika Borsos (erikab93)

5 out of 5 stars This CD has touched my soul!.......2003-05-28

The Edge of Forever is an excellent album. Hilary Stagg plays very soft and soothing harp music combined with keyboards, flutes and some vocals. I loved his music from the moment I heard it and it is highly recommended to anybody who likes soft music. But, if you like music with more of a beat to it there is also another harpist named Andreas Vollenweider and he plays music combined with drums a lot of other instruments.

There is not much I can say about the songs on the album because most songs have the same notes other than saying that every song is worth a listen to.

That's all I have to say and I hope my review was helpful to you!!

5 out of 5 stars Life-Changing.......2004-04-08

This CD changed my life. It is incredible, I can't put words to it's beauty. It's blending of disparate elements works... I've been making and listening to collage music for a very long time, and Ms. Berezan has created here something that will last the length of time. The concept is gorgeous... I'm not going to ruin it for you and tell you what happens. Like a good movie, this one is best experienced for oneself.

Also, check out "ReTurning", another altogether unique piece of "sound art on CD" that is also incredible. That one has also changed my life. When I say "life-changing", I mean that whenever I need to go to the particular space in my body/mind that this music resonates with, all I have to do is put on the CD and I feel a shift. My perspective shifts, my life shifts. Jennifer Berezan is an artist with unparalleled integrity, as far as I can see.

Album Description

Dakini Lounge marks Indo-Jazz innovator Prem Joshua's first encounter with DJ science. Here, an eclectic collection of cutting edge mixologists including Karsh Kale, Sean Dinsmore (The Dum Dum Project), Joi and Dharma Dogz (of Waterbone) shed new light on Joshua's signature sound, translating his East-West alchemies into stunning dub, chill and dance floor masterworks.

Prem Joshua has come a long way from the 18-year-old German rocker, mind blown by a Ravi Shankar performance, answering a mysterious call from a faraway place. While spending the better part of 20 years in India (where he has sold well over 50,000 records), Joshua has developed a unique musical style employing sitar, Indian flutes, saxophone, electronica and tarana-style singing that artfully—and skillfully—bridges the gap between traditional Eastern sounds and Western jazz forms, prompting the Times of India to dub him "the new guru of East-West fusion music."

Dakini Lounge marks the next logical progression in Prem Joshua's storied career. Placing the master musician's songs in the able hands of these modern day studio mavens presents new interpretations and directions for the many listeners already in love with Prem Joshua's music while introducing him to an ever wider audience.

Very deep, musical journey. One of the best of my collection of electronic music compillations. Very beautiful, I cannot recommend this album enough. I've explored other titles by prem Joshua, but for some reason, they are totally different, and cannot compare to THIS CD. layers upon layers of sound and really chill, very COOL, ethnic, east indian melodies. What can i say, it's one of the best.

5 out of 5 stars Better than ever!.......2007-05-05

This long-awaited new addition to Anuna's discography is a major treat. The ensemble sounds better than ever, and the album's name "Sensation" is particularly apt for the selections on this recording. As always, Michael McGlynn's compositions and arrangements here are breathtaking and extraordinarily atmospheric as performed by this unique choral group. "Shining Water" is one of the most intoxicating tracks, with its hypnotic 5/4 motion and inclusion of recorded Cetlic harp played backwards in the background. "The Road Of Passage" is another major highlight, which has a soaring soprano solo and overlapping chords. The disk comes to a truly stunning close with "O Maria", a densely layered piece with a goosebump-raising repeating progression and electrifying embiance.

4 out of 5 stars Review of this album by All Music Guide.......2007-04-23

Sensation, the 10th album by Irish choral ensemble Anúna, brings together a wide assortment of music, all of it arranged or composed by its conductor, Michael McGlynn. While McGlynn's treatments may rankle purists, who, for instance, only want to hear Hildegard von Bingen performed by unaccompanied women's voices, when taken on its own terms, his cross-pollination of musical styles is never less than intriguing and is most often beguiling.

McGlynn's sophistication as a composer accounts for much of the album's appeal. The title track, featuring a speaker reciting an idyllic Rimbaud poem, accompanied by violin, harp, and women's chorus singing a sensual, impressionistic setting of the same text, vividly captures the serenity and eroticism of Rimbaud's imagery. McGlynn's setting of the medieval text Maid in the Moor Lay is disarming in its folk-like simplicity and purity. His O Maria is harmonically and texturally complex, but never sounds "difficult," and conveys an otherworldly and enveloping serenity. Other pieces, such as Silver River and Shining Water, bring a new age sensibility to the Irish folk tradition.

The other factor in making this album so sensually appealing and rewarding is the extraordinary technical prowess and secure musicianship of the singers. The ease and precision and musicality of their performances of extremely demanding music puts them in the ranks of the very finest chamber choirs. It would be a pleasure to hear them bring their formidable strength to the broader repertoire of exceptional (and exceptionally difficult to perform) choral music that is being written today.

Anuna could sing the phone book and it would make me cry. Michael McGlynn is BRILLIANT; his arrangements are so, so rich and full...there's nothing like it.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the wait!.......2006-11-10

At long last, Anuna returns with an album of all-new compositions by choirmaster Michael McGlynn. If you're viewing this item, chances are you're already familiar with Anuna's work, and this new album is definitely another masterpiece. The overall mood is quiet, meditative and enchanting. Some fans may miss the more energetic sound of songs like 'Salve Rex Gloriae' or 'Dicant Nunc' from past albums but the mystic mood throughout gives the album a cohesive sound which works perfectly. Top recommendation!

It's hard to believe that Riverdance, which began as a 7-minute intermission act during the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest, is already 10 years old. Nobody back then could have imagined that a new-fangled amalgam of Irish folk styles, light classical music a la Albert W. Ketelbey and Tin Pan Alley would top the charts, win a Grammy for Best Musical and go on to take the world by storm. But why re-record Riverdance, which is as deeply associated with its original time and context as Saturday Night Fever is with the 1970s? Yes, the Irish players, all of whom are master instrumentalists, still sound fresh, but the percussive dancing feet, minus visuals, gets old fast. The Macedonian, Spanish and Russian interpolations are great fun if a maybe bit patronizing around the edges. But haven't the misty chorales, New-Age-ridden cloaked-and-hooded sopranos and other portentous Celtic Twilight-isms long since descended into self-parody? --Christina Roden

Ok, that was the worst editorial review I have ever seen.... she just totally knocked celtic culture, and one of the best celtic recordings in one condecending swoop. When she can dance like that, then let her critique.

Album Description

On World's Edge, Steve Roach takes a leap of faith at the edge of contemporary electronic music and jumps headfirst into unfamiliar territory. World's Edge explores the enigmatic relationships between sound and silence, space and rhythm, ancient ritual and modern technology.

On World's Edge disk one, Roach's previous forays into Australian Aboriginal music have expanded into potent rhythmic essays. On disk two, the introspective soundscapes Roach pioneered on classics like Structures from Silence reach a new level of mastery through a single, 60 minute composition, To the Threshold of Silence.

Through it all, World's Edge is a powerful, musical commentary on living at the edge of crisis, evolution and renewal. Says Roach, "I've always enjoyed this metaphor of coming to the edge of an abyss and jumping off, building your wings before you hit the bottom and soaring with the culmination of all those feelings. On another level, I was thinking a lot about the disappearance of ancient cultures as modern life infiltrates. I wanted to convey a primordial voice in the modern technology, go to the edge in a shamanic sense and bring back sounds that carry inspiration and power. On yet another level, I feel the pieces are imbued with the feeling that the world is at a critical edge in many ways. The artist, as an open nerve, has a responsibility to transform all of this into something that will hopefully give off at least a spark of insight and inspiration. World's Edge is a chronicle of my own search for meaning in this often overwhelming time."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Second of Three Ambient Masterpieces.......2002-05-30

Among Steve Roach's vast and brilliant catalog of ambient, or "space music" recordings, very few are less than superlative and a select few transcend the rest to establish the new high water mark by which all other ambient recordings are measured. 'World's Edge' is just such an album.

His first true masterpiece was the double album 'Dreamtime Return'. With 'World's Edge', Steve Roach moved into a new realm that integrated ambient textures with tribal rhythm's to completely transport the listener to, (hopefully without sounding too metaphysical) a new plain of existence. The first disc is especially effective in creating this feeling of escape, while the second disc is one long piece that is more introspective as it delves into the inner soul of the listener.

Once again, I must disagree with Mr. Moodindigo2 who seems to have completely missed the point of these albums. This music isn't about sensory deprivation: rather they are a complex and moving exercise in TOTAL IMMERSION. If you take the time to listen critically, you cannot help but be totally carried away by the intricate structures and subtle counterpoints of the music. I would suggest that Moodindigo2 give it another listen and try to stay awake this time.

This album is the second masterpiece in the triumvirate, but I must also agree with Moodindigo's "friend" who ranks Steve Roach's Early Man (yet another double CD) as the zenith of his career to date, and the third true masterpiece in his catalog. Buy them all and experience 6 discs of the best ambient music available anywhere.

4 out of 5 stars Is this what it's like to be unconscious?.......2002-05-14

Amazing disc. Minimalism that is expressionistic. Ever shut your eyes and stare at the stars and red clouds that dance beneath your eye lids? World's Edge would be the soundtrack to that display. New Age that is etheral to the 10th degree. It is a soundscape that looks to the heavens (starry night) for its inspiration, but is rooted in something that is cthonic and primordial. Another Steven Roach fan who is a friend of mine prefers the "Early Man" album to this album. Uh uh. No way. What "Early Man" does for a jurassic feel, "World's Edge" would be the audio experience that comes from sensory deprivation. It can reach inside you and squeeze your heart a bit too tightly if you let it. That sounds extreme, but there is something to this disc that can send the listener on an astral journey, if you let it.....

4 out of 5 stars Roach's first double-volume release since Dreamtime.......1999-02-12

Roach's most ambitious release since Dreamtime Return, World's Edge offers a synopsis of his various styles on disc one and offers an hour-long meditative mind journey called "To The Threshold of Silence" on disc two. The pieces on disc one are reminiscent of everything from Western Spaces (like "Undershadow") to Dreamtime Return (like "Steel and Bone") and extends the tribal-ambient direction he started on Dreamtime with "Beat of Desire" and "Thunderground", the latter of which is the best piece on the disc one. Disc Two, "To The Threshold of Silence", was his most ambitous space music composition at that time, beginning with a Tibetan- inspired gong ceremonial section, continuing with three other linked sections that move through various emotional spaces tied together by a common textural theme. A great introduction to Roach's music, particularly if you're interested in his '90s offerrings.
