Fuse Magazine, October 1999
The opening track is a marvel of group interplay featuring Diorio's trademark intervallic improvisation and some of the best soloing from Berlin on record.

Product Description
Joe Diorio, Jeff Berlin, and Vinnie Colaiuta. This is jazz impressionism at it's best! Includes three standards and five avant-garde originals created spontaneously by the artists without rehersal. Joe uses some alternate tunings on the guitar and the interplay between the musicians is matched by few trios.

2 out of 5 stars Unimpressive Works by a Great Composer.......2007-07-16

I am a fan of many of Respighi's works, but I was not impressed by Brazilian Impressions or Church Windows. Both of the works struck me as unusually sluggish, with a lack of focus.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing disc!.......2006-05-16

This disc is totally fascinating on so many levels. First, there is the music itself: Respighi ranging from crystalline delicacy, to almost brutal force. Too many people discover his most famous Pines, Fountains, Ancient Airs, and Boutique Fantasque, then for some reason, stop there. For them, this disc is a must, with 3 lesser known but equally deserving suites that will touch your heart and overwhelm you with sound. Second, there is the engineering. As always with Telarc, full frequency range, full dynamic range, and a clarity that lets little details come through no matter how complex the orchestration gets, and at times, it is thick! Last, but not least, there is Lopez-Cobos and the Cincinnati Symphony. The playing is nearly all virtuoso, with only the occasional very minor weakness in evidence. More so, there is the "weight." The Berlin Philharmonic and NY Phil have always been known for this factor, not to be confused with pure volume. Something does not have to be very loud to have weight, and when Respighi calls for it, it is there in abundance. Here and there I might long for some of Muti's abandon in "Feste" [Muti/Philadelphia/EMI] or some of the muscular percussion [especially the 3 tam-tams!] playing on the Geoffrey Simon Church Windows [Chandos] but all the pieces fall into place here: Clean playing, lively, tender, brutal, exiciting... all when called for, and a properly balanced organ solo in Church Windows [at last!!] that'll leave you exhaused, and totally satisfied.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful!.......2006-03-24

In brief, this is a very powerful recording, and a unique, passionate interpretation of all these works. Church Windows will take your breath away! Cincinnatti's best work!

5 out of 5 stars Give your hifi a workout with Respighi.......2005-11-04

This is a delightful composition, and Respighi is one of those oft overlooked composers who can provide relief from the usual "B" composers.
But the reason I recommend this is because it is a great recording. If you want to see what your hifi can do, get this. It is a sonic spectacular with great stereo imaging.
However, it seems this recording does not play well with all CD players. One audio expert said it was overmodulated. I am finding it sounds different with different DACs. It works great with my high end Sony CD player, and with my new Toshiba DVD player. But the digital feed into my Marantz receiver sounds flatter, with less low level detail and less loud transients. Not sure why. Seems like it would make a good test CD, perhaps if you were auditioning equipment to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Rapturuous Respighi.......2004-01-07

This writer long has admired Arturo Toscanini's RCA Victor recordings of Ottorino Respighi's "Roman Cycle," which includes "Fountains of Rome," "Pines and Rome," and "Roman Festivals." Certainly for interpretation of the Respighi symphonic poems, Toscanini has been hard to beat. For one thing, Toscanini was a close friend of the composer and was entrusted with the world premiere of "Roman Festivals," given in Carnegie Hall in 1929 with the New York Philharmonic.

The recorded performances with the NBC Symphony, made between 1949 and 1953, are hallmarks. The only thing missing in those vintage recordings is the exceptional sound that has been achieved in recent years, particularly in Telarc's amazing digital recordings. On this CD we get to hear the last of the "Roman Cycle," "Roman Festivals" in a powerful, very exciting performance by the very fine Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra under Jesus Lopez-Cobos. All the stops are pulled out, from the roaring lions as the Christians are martyred in the Coliseum to the raucous, sometimes comical "Epiphany" finale. I have little doubt that Toscanini would have approved of this recording and wished that RCA had been able to capture the volume during the fortissimo sections. (It has been noted that Toscanini tried to get RCA to record more volume and was told by the engineers that the 1949 recording equipment simply couldn't handle it. He said he didn't care if they broke the tape machine. Undoubtedly, he would have smiled over the technical advances that have occurred in recording since then.)

I first discovered "Church Windows" in the ground-breaking Columbia recording by Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra. At least that recording had stereo and full range high fidelity. I found it a very enjoyable performance and am glad that Sony has reissued it. The only thing lacking there was a pipe organ because Ormandy refused to record in the orchestra's home base, the Academy of Music, after it was remodeled in the mid-1950's and had to resort to Allen electronic organ. In this Cincinnati performance, there is often absolute grandeur and an overwhelming orchestral and organ climax during the final section, "Saint Gregory The Great." The symphonic poem also has moments of great beauty and sensitivity, particularly in "The Flight Into Egypt" and "The Matins of St. Clare." This music is filled with deep feeling and spirituality. Typically, Respighi makes considerable use of Gregorian chants. Overall, this is a memorable performance of music that is often neglected in favor of the more familiar "Roman Cycle," especially "Pines of Rome."

Antal Dorati was probably the first to make a stereo recording of "Brazilian Impressions," back in the glory days of Mercury "Living Presence." The Cincinnati recording is quite enchanting and mysterious at times, faithfully capturing the musical images that Respighi depicted after spending time in exotic Brazil. Remarkably, Respighi's "Brazilian Impressions" are generally more subdued than those by the French master Darius Milhaud or Brazil's own musical giant, Heitor Villa-Lobos. Still, it is a very intriguing and fascinating work and is given a fine performance.

5 out of 5 stars Mompou: Piano Music, Vol. 1 thru 4 w/Jordi Maso.......2007-05-30

This review is for Vols. 1 thru 4. The Naxos series is the best bargain you will ever find for the 4 (separate) discs. Sr. Maso (a Spainard) is definitely "on target" with his technique and delivery. The recordings are very good. I believe that the reclusive Catalan Mompou would be pleased that a musician has captured his melancholic spirit so well...

Five stars for Mssrs. Mompou and Maso!
P.S., Get all four discs like I did - you won't be sorry - seriously! With Naxos - the price is always right - music for the masses at a good price!!

5 out of 5 stars The Italian Neo Classicism and his major musical Ambassador!.......2005-10-16

Joined even by the musical language and taste, Respighi develops a different estheticism respect to Ildebrand Pizzetti, more polished and mystic. The excessive instrumental decoration and affection for the dense color and, in the meantime, refined are derived directly substantially from Rimsky Korsakov and Richard Strauss, despite the generous discursiveness of the architectonic lines is very close to the great German musical tradition. Respighi is more inclined to naturalism and the return of the great orchestral masses with special emphasis in the search of new expressive elements based in the use of the color and the history or, in other words, in the preservation of the memory.

The Birds is a suite for reduced orchestra. Once more the pantheist gaze of this composer points out the influence of the Italian Neo classicism leaded by Casella. Five clavichordists fragments of the XVII inspired by the song of several birds (about pages of Pasquini, Phillipe Rameau and Jacques de Gallot and a British anonym ).It can feel the deliberated hedonistic avidity so typical of this Century as a clear response to the Rationalism Age: the triumph of the triviality over the reason empire.

Brazil has been always a radiant beacon in the febrile imagination of Europe: From Julio Verne to Alexander von Humboldt; from Darwin to Darius Milhaud, the search for the most essential sample of virginal nature has inflamed and nourished the ancestral landscapes of Europe: the wild Amazon river, the intricate, compact and dense jungles; the visible attraction for the mystery of unknown, touched the soul of Respighi composing a fabulous biographical sketch.

The fountains of Rome have in Toscanini a serious and hard to beat rival and the pines of Rome have found in Victor de Sabata. Nevertheles, Dorati makes a vibrant and emotional performance that, even it does not reach the colossal heights of these named conductors. Here you have a remarkable of what Respighi signified for the Italians. After Verdi 's death, the musical horizon experienced a notable lack of inspiration; despite the fact many Italian composers were seduced for the new musical proposals, Toscanini and De Sabata were not exactly fervent or devoted fans of the new musical forms, specially Toscanini, and both pages Pines and Fountains are works which talks about the Grandness and monumentality of Rome: once more Respighi goes in search of tradition conceived as the human form of measuring the time.

A magnificent choice and one of my beloved albums in Dorati 's discography.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent sound (and performances!).......2005-09-28

Excellent sound (and famous performances!), exactly as we've come to expect from every (justly renowned) Mercury Living Presence reissue. How splendid and satisfying it is to have the original MLP LP resurrected in compact disc format! If you're a fan of Respighi's masterpieces, you owe it to yourself to experience anew (or to become newly acquainted with) Dorati's famous renditions.

2 out of 5 stars Terrible sound.......2001-12-18

The sound on the Pini and Fontane is really a horrible experience. Gli ucelli, recorded in London has a much better sound and a better orchestra, at least I think so. Dorati is usually good and reliable and so he is here but Respighis music is actually not so much to write home about.

5 out of 5 stars Dorati's Respighi milestone.......1999-05-13

Dorati was always one of Respighi's biggest champions and it's too bad he didn't get around to recording more. This disk is a delight to have in Wilma Cozart's excellent rehab of her own original tapes.

While the other works are among the best recordings of them made, it's the Brazilian Impressions that excites the most. Like Milhaud, Respighi was astounded by his trip to Brazil and opened up a creative horizon for him that counteracted his serious, depressive illnesses. The Impressions indicate a direction that led to other triumphs like the great ballet "Queen of Sheba", the opera "Maria Egiziaca", the sublime orchestral "Metamorpheosen" that gives any great orchestra a workout like Bartok's Concerto.

If you have the old LPs, stick with them because there is an element of dynamic splendor somehow muted here. But if your LPs are to the point where there is more scratch than music, buy this disk and keep these old friends in your life.

3 out of 5 stars Re-issue of Merc. Living PresenceLP retains original flavor.......1999-04-23

Mercury's Living Presence series caused a sensation when introduced around 40 years ago but sounds dated in today's standard. Nevertheless, the pieces retain their original charm in CD format. "Butantan" sends a shiver down the spine as Living Presence accurately conveys a Brazilian snake venom research colony. Worth investigating for historic reasons alone

5 out of 5 stars A Surprising Find.......2007-03-12

The composers of these songs were almost all born in the second half of the 19th century. Their attempt was to create an "American music" from native American sources of rhythm and tonality. I get the same sense of hearing original music with these songs as I got the first time I heard Erik Satie. The songs tend to be melodic and peaceful and fresh. Don't expect much in the way of tom-toms and movie indian harmonies. I love to find songs that go to unexpected places. I found that here.

For a much more sophisticated review, search "American Indianists" and Fred Flaxman.

5 out of 5 stars Calming, Flowing Water Music.......2003-11-26

This thematic program of scenes of ocean, lake and landscapes provides a relaxing yet stimulating palette of swirling sounds.

Included is known pieces by Debussy's LaMer and Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture and new pieces for my discovery from Frank Bridge's Suite for Orchestra of the Sea and Liadov's "Enchanted Lake."

The rippling harp/string beginning of Liadov's work is so nice! I'm really enchanted with this piece and the LBSO's string section on this. What a gorgeous piece, with its mystery and breezy, shadowy movement.

Falletta conducts the LBSO with grandeur and pace, making this a soothing, relaxing CD to have in one's collection, especially given the old and new water discoveries this offers.

5 out of 5 stars A Musical Exploration Of The Sea From Long Beach.......2002-05-11

JoAnn Falletta, one of the most prominent women conductors America has ever had, leads the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra in these highly celebrated classical music depictions of the sea. Works such as Mendelssohn's "Hebrides Overture", Debussy's "La Mer", and Frank Bridge's "Sea Suite", are given fine performances by this up-and-coming orchestra from here in Southern California. A sort of dedicatory album in honor of the opening of that city's Aquarium of the Pacific, it stands on its own as a fine example of music making that goes on in this part of the world, normally thought to be dominated by the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Falletta's conducting is even-handed and vividly brings out the mysteries of the sea in each of the featured compositions. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Incredible piece of music!.......2005-04-09

I first heard Church Windows on the radio in Philadelphia, before Temple Univ. jazz radio took over the classical duties. Well, the setting was a BEAUTIFUL, sunny, warm, early Summer Sunday morning, driving by beautiful rolling farmland and green hills with the sunrise in front of the car with no other cars around. I didn't hear who the composer was because my brother and I got to the park to ride mountain bikes before the piece ended. I called the radio station that Monday morning and found out that it was Church Windows and that was the first time I had ever really heard Respighi. Being a trumpet player, obviously the brass attracted me when I first heard it, so I went out and ordered the cd and to this day, it is one of my favorite pieces of music, even more than anything by Mahler, Rimsky-K, and Strauss!!! The second thing that attracted me to this piece was the beauty of the romanticism of this piece! Just incredible orchestrations and melodies that are so intense and dramatic. Like other of my favorite discs, I always recommend this to any classical music lovers that I know or meet.

    5 out of 5 stars I Love Respighi.......2003-02-03

It also frustrates me that Church Windows is overshadowed by the Pines of Rome and the like. The 2nd movement, St. Michael the Archangel, is just about the most exciting piece of classical music I have ever heard. If you like brass (and especially low brass) you will love Church Windows, love this CD, and love Respighi. Highly Recommened!

5 out of 5 stars Glorious, Intimate, Explosive!!!.......2002-01-16

Church Windows seems to be unjustly overshadowed by the Roman tone poems, as there does not seem to be many performances or recordings of this masterful orchestral suite. If you like the tone poems, treat yourself to some more "ear candy" with Church Windows. The fourth movement alone is worth the investment as it contains one of Respighi's all-time great climaxes. As a bonus you get "Brazilian impressions", a brilliant musical suite of colorful delights. These are my choice picks of the few CD releases available today. Simon seems to have the dynamics and feelings needed for this powerful music. Highly recommended!!!

Leo Ornstein, who died in 2002 at the approximate age of 110(!), was a notorious wild man in his early years. The inclusion of three of his early pieces, including such titles as Danse Sauvage and Suicide in an Airplane (both from 1913), show where he got his reputation. But there is much more to Ornstein's story than the mad dissonance of his early works. He was a highly accomplished pianist (his only recordings are acoustic 78s of Chopin) and an excellent teacher, and he wrote in a wide variety of styles, sometimes simultaneously. This disc begins with a breathtakingly lovely piece of impressionism from 1971, A Morning in the Woods, and includes two large-scale piano sonatas with many impressive aspects, one from 1924, the other from 1988. Pianist Janice Weber, who is also a successful novelist, seems to specialize in super-virtuosic music, and she is fully up to the challenges of Ornstein's most difficult writing. For its demonstration of the variety of Ornstein's work, its quality of performance, its realistic sound, and even its outstanding booklet, this disc deserves an enthusiastic recommendation. --Leslie Gerber

    5 out of 5 stars A great value.......2006-07-25

This is one of the discs I listen to quite often, making it a great buy, even if Hamelin's performances of a few of the pieces have more fire. A Morning in the Woods is a lovely piece that is not dissonant and can appeal to a large crossection of listeners. Similarly, there is the Long Remembered Sorrow. People focus too much on pieces like Danse Sauvage, which are more interesting as an artistic statement than as music. The 7th sonata is, as others have said, a great piece and Ms. Weber does a fine job. I think one reviewer's comparison between the 4th sonata and Rachmaninov is inaccurate. I don't hear Rachmaninov in the work at all. If you're a buyer looking primarily for jagged/primal dissonant work, get Hamelin's disc. But, if you're interested in more impressionistic work as well as modern, this disc offers a larger perspective on Ornstein's body of work.

3 out of 5 stars Rather ordinary playing mars an otherwise good collection.......2003-12-02

This is Naxos' rival to Marc-Andre Hamelin's Hyperion disc of music by the Russian-born American composer Leo Ornstein. Hamelin recorded the Eighth Piano Sonata and early Futurist pieces; in contrast, Weber records the shorter Fourth and Seventh Sonatas and a more varied selection of works.

The three works in common to both discs are Suicide in an Airplane, Danse sauvage and Impressions de la Tamise, all ferociously dissonant works from Ornstein's early Futurist phase. Suicide in an Airplane evokes the sound of an aeroplane circling overhead, then flying off into the distance, while Dans sauvage is a ferocious rhythmic toccata. Impressions is, in contrast, slow and meditative; perhaps an attempt at writing highly dissonant Debussy.

Unfortunately a comparison between Hamelin and Weber in these three works clearly illustrates the main problem with this disc: the performances are rather ordinary. While Weber certainly gets all the notes down (no mean feat in music that is often very difficult to play) Hamelin has so much more litheness, vibrancy and rhythmic articulation that there really is no contest between the two. Nonetheless, for many of the works on this disc, there is no rival, so Weber it will have to be for now.

The other short works on the disc date from the 1960s and 1970s, after Ornstein had endured a long period with little music written. The Tarantelle has something in common with his Futurist works--a vigorous rhythmic essay, if rather less abrasive than his earlier music. In contrast, A Morning in the Woods and A Long Remembered Sorrow are rhapsodic musings of a distinctly Russian temperament. They may have been written in a very old-fashioned style for their time, but that doesn't meant they aren't worth hearing.

The Fourth and Seventh Sonatas date from 64 years apart. The Fourth is from 1924 and represents a drastic retreat from the Futurism of only a few years earlier. It is a four-movement work in a basically Rachmaninovian style; though without the elder composer's genius for melody, it is still an enjoyable 20 minutes. However, the Seventh, from 1988, strikes me as the more impressive of the two. Beginning with a ferocious opening movement that recovers much of the energy of his earlier works without the crudity that sometimes mars them, it then moves through a more melodious--though still dramatic--Andante and ends with a toccata-like Allegro. This is the best of the later pieces I've heard, and if it still lives in the world of Stravinsky, Bartok and Prokofiev, who really cares?

Given the price and the lack of rival performances of the sonatas, this disc can be recommended to pianophiles and lovers of early 20th century music. I hope that the recent revival of Ornstein--even if he did not quite live to see it--will bring other pianists to his work; in particular, I would like to see a major musician tackle the Seventh Sonata.

4 out of 5 stars Leo Ornstein at the Piano.......2003-06-11

The cover of this Naxos "American Classics" CD features a painting with the title of this review. The painting is by Leon Kroll (1884-1974) and is in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. It dates from 1918 and features a young Leo Ornstein, his sensitive and handsome features deeply wrapped in concentration as he plays upon an open grand piano. The left hand is raised in the air with the expectation of a crashing chord to follow.

From about 1910 to the mid-1920's, Leo Ornstein (1892? - 2002) was a charismatic concert pianist. He was known as well for his dissonant, haghly avant-garde piano music. Then, in the mid-1920's, Ornstein abruptly abandoned his performing career and retired from public view. He founded a music school in Philadelphia and continued composing in a variety of styles. Orenstein died in 2002 in Green Bay, Wisconsin at the age of 109 or 110. After his initial sensational career as a pianist, documented in the cover art, Ornstein lived a quiet life.

This is a CD of Ornstein's piano music covering the span of his long life. The works are lovingly performed by Janice Weber, who also writes novels. The thouough liner notes were written by Ornstein's son, Severo Ornstein, who maintains a website devoted to his father's music.

The disc includes three short pieces from Ornstein's early avant-garde Career: Danse Sauvage (1913), Impressions of the Thames (1914), and Suicide in an Airplane (1913). These pieces are highly percussive and dissonant, with heavy chords in the bass (look again at the cover painting) alternating with lighter treble sections. These pieces remain a challenge to hear and, I am sure, to play. They appear to me in the nature of virtuosic encore pieces which the composer-pianist might have played at the conclusion of a concert devoted to recent music and perhaps to some Chopin.

The remainder of the CD is a mix of shorter pieces written later in Orenstein's life and two substantial piano sonatas. The sonatas, in particular, are intriguing, challenging music. Both the sonatas on this disc show a mixture of styles.

The fourth piano sonata dates from 1924 and is in four movements. It is largely lyrical and reflective with a final movement, marked vivo, that builds to a climax in its concluding pages. I found this music heavily influenced by French impressionism. The first movement in fact quotes Debussy's "Au Claire de Lune" several times. There is also a Russian influence derived from the mystical music of Scriabin. This is a well-integrated meditative work.

The Seventh Piano Sonata (1988) is a challenge. It continues to show the strong influence of French impressionism and has lyrical, accessible sections interspersed with complex, modernistic passages. The work is in three movements each of which is in tripartite form with a middle section contrasted to the two outer sections. This music will need repeated hearings. But I was taken with it.

There are three remaining short pieces on the CD. "A Morning in the Woods: (1971) is impressionistic and plangent with the sound of falling leaves. "A Long Remembered Sorrow" (1964) is a romantic work tinged with melancholy which again reaches its climax in the concluding moments. The "Tarantelle" (1960) is a running, shimmering quick piece with a quiet middle section. In this Tarantelle, I thought again of encore music.

Some listeners will find this CD forbidding. But one of the joys of music lies in the delight in finding little-known composers who speak to one. I found Ornstein such a composer. His long life showed composition and creativity in both modernistic and traditional forms. It was a life devoted to the art of music.
