Customer Reviews:
The Most Relaxing Classical Album In the World Eveer, Volume II.......2006-08-28
Good selection of music, poorly performed and badly arranged. Good album for a tag sale. Same comment applies for Volume I.
Great music listein to while you read in bed.......2005-08-21
I have listened to this CD for the last several years before going to sleep at night. I love classical music, and this is great music to help make my soul feel at peace and unwind after a taxing day.
A must buy for the non-snobbish classical music fan........2004-10-22
I bought Vol. 1 of this series and was quite satisfied, but I have to say I'm more than satisfied with this one. If you can just mellow out and enjoy some great pieces, you'll love this CD. #15 on Disc 2 is almost worth the price alone!
A bliss of spirit........2004-09-18
That's disc will open You a wonderful, beautiful world of sounds, their harmony & emotion : you'll feel your heart full of
Joy, Tears, Love.
Good LUCK!
Boring.......2004-05-11
Yes this CD will put you to sleep in minutes. Its the most boring uninspiring classical music. The first CD was very good but this Vol. 2 is like most movie sequels....AWFUL !

Customer Reviews:
Everything he recorded in his all-too-short life.......2002-09-22
Arguably the first Chicano rocker, Ritchie provided three hits - his first release "Come On, Let's Go", scrapping the Top 40, and his double-sided smash "Donna/La Bamba", released just prior to his tragic death on February 3, 1959 [along with Buddy Holly & The Big Bopper]
But, beyond the 3 hits, and the all-too-brief career, Ritchie provided inspiration to many others along the way. Despite the maudlin nature on deejay Tommy Dee's tribute song "Three Stars", there is a degree of truth in the line "Why did God call him so far away; perhaps to light a star to show the way". Ritchie's "star" shone brightly as inspiration to others. From soundalike Chris Montez to fellow Latino Trini Lopez to instrumental band El Chicano to guitar impressario Santana, Ritchie's meteoric rise gave the foundation not only to Chicano Rock, but to many others. Ritchie was amongst the first to write his own songs, do his own arrangements, and play his own guitar.
Although there is much in this box set that is minimal in terms of actual music value, there is a sense of what Ritchie might have been (or might NOT have been).
From his mawkish cover of Ersel Hickey's BLUEBIRDS OVER THE MOUNTAIN to his plaintiff take of Robert & Johnny's WE BELONG TOGETHER, Ritchie gives his own soul to the material.
Sit quietly in a dim-lit room and listen to IN A TURKISH TOWN, or clap your hands and dance around to DOOBY-DOOBY-WAH. Ritchie died in his teens, and it's been more than 40 years since he's been gone, but as the old saying goes - his music lives on in the heart of his fans (both old & new)
MORE ABOUT VALENS THAN I THOUGHT!.......2000-03-31
I bought a Ritchie Valens tape in 1988, and I thought all of those songs on there, were the only ones he had ever recorded. This box set sure proved me wrong! I don't understand why the motion picture(innacurate) did not include most of these songs. Sure is a shame of what happened to Ritchie in 1959, along with the other two men. Really makes you wonder what rock n'roll would have been like. Unfortunately, there music would probably not be respected as much, being that we live in such a "take everything for granted society". Jimi Hendrix once said, "People don't seem to notice rock singers, until after they are dead". That' true, I don't hear people talking much about Jon Bon Jovi, or even Van Halen. But this was a wonderful, very complete box set!
Ricardo Valenzuela--Gone BUT NOT Forgotten.......2000-03-05
I bought this CD box set in July of 1998 soon after I was told I had cancer. I had recently seen "La Bamba" on HBO and I decided to listen to Ricardo's tapes as part of my doctors'"positive attitude" therapy. And did it help! I have been cancer free for almost 18 months and I know that listening to him helped me immensely. He died before I was born, so I never had the chance to see and hear him in person; but seeing his pictures in the booklet and hearing him singing, laughing and being himself on tape is wonderful! This box set should convince the committee at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio that they should have inducted Ricardo years ago. Their refusal to honor him is unbelieveable! I'll ALWAYS remember you, Ricardo--My guardian angel. Until we meet in heaven---Mary
Ritchie Is The King of the CENTURY!.......1999-07-05
This boxed set demonstrates how great Ritchie's music and personality was.Disc 3 is a live performance by Ritchie Valens!Another cool thing to do is is listen to Come On, Let's Go and We Belong Together on Disc ONE and then listen to the same two songs on Disc TWO.It bares no resemblence! You Get a great Ritchie poster, Ritchie postcards, and a 62 page picture booklet with many rare photos. But at any rate if your a Valens fan this is a must!
Ritchie will always be the greatest of all time.......1999-05-06
This album has tracks that never been heard before in the public. Ritchie shows his style of rythum style of guitar playing in this album. In the song La Bamba which he plays in the studio many times you can hear that Richie plays the intro many times before Bob Keene helps him profectionizes it at the end. The album also has a rare live performance of Ritchie at his High School before his timely death in 1959. He performs many un heard songs in this album and you can see him through rare photos that a over 60 page booklet has of this young great unforgotten legend.

Customer Reviews:
Pleasant and relaxing.......2000-08-30
I heard this at a local mega-bookstore. It is pleasing enough that I actually heard it and was listening to it. Definitely background or relaxation music, but also good enough to listen to. The woodwinds on some of the pieces are very lyrical. Good medieval/Elizabethan type music.

Customer Reviews:
Not the best, but good for true fans.......2006-11-14
Guitar on the Go was Wes' last release on Riverside. This album consists of a few reissued tracks (Missile Blues and Fried Pies from The Wes Montgomery Trio) as well as new tracks from his final Riverside sessions. It seems like it was released as an afterthought, after Riverside had gone defunct. Wes' guitar is hard to hear on most of the new tracks, but Mi Cosa (Unidentified Solo Guitar), the last track on the album, is fantastic and made this album worth purchasing. Recommended for fans who already own most of his other albums. If you are new to Wes I'd recommend The Incredible Jazz Guitar, Smokin' At The Half Note, Boss Guitar, or The Wes Montgomery Trio.
This Trio - Almost As Much As Its Guitarist - Was A Blessing.......2004-01-06
The chronologically last Riverside album from Wes Montgomery picks up, mostly, where "Portrait of Wes" left off: a final few rounds with his beloved guitar-organ-drums trio format. Now, there are two ways to take this set, aside from the cool flame that seeps from every note sounded by the master and his longtime organist Mel Rhyne: 1) Take it on its own, and don't hold it against a collapsing company, changing ownership and lifestyle, that they repeat-released a pair of blues jewels from Montgomery's own pen, the early (as in, 1959) "Missile Blues" and the latter-day "Fried Pies"; or, 2) bypass those two numbers and put the rest onto a single disc with the "Portrait of Wes" material, if you really want to be prickly about it.
For me, I don't mind the repeat-released "Missile Blues" and (especially) "Fried Pies" (where Jimmy Cobb, the incandescent drummer with whom Montgomery would work again on the Half Note sessions with the Wynton Kelly Trio, joins Montgomery and Rhyne), if only because I had the habit of playing them repeatedly on their original album releases. Nor do I mind getting two takes of "The Way You Look Tonight," the shorter alternate take as lovely and lyrical as the nine-minute romantic monster that was issued originally. The "Unidentified Solo Guitar," not part of the original album, would be remade in due course (as "Mi Cosa," on "Bumpin'"), during Montgomery's Verve period, with a nicely arrayed string section, but taken here on its own it is just as embracing and would probably have been a perfect fit on the original release.
The more you hear of them, the more you come to wish Wes Montgomery had been able to bring at least Mel Rhyne along to his Verve years; Rhyne is attuned to Montgomery's gently fiery style in ways that even the great Jimmy Smith (cutting two magnificent Verve albums with Montgomery) couldn't quite lock in. Montgomery and Rhyne play as though completing each other's statements and knowing what the other man thinks and feels before it's expressed, so seamless are both the shifts from one to the other soloist and the knit of one or the other's accompaniment. Regular drummer George Brown was as painterly a drummer as Montgomery ever worked with.
You hear music like this and you're not in the least surprised that, whatever he did before or afterward, Wes Montgomery never felt as much at home as when working this trio format. And they make you feel right at home with them, even now. The Wes Montgomery Trio even in 2004 makes most of what has passed for jazz in their time and beyond sound somewhere between self-congratulatory and shiftless. It would be no disgrace if Fantasy, which controls the Riverside catalogue, should produce a box set composed strictly of the complete Wes Montgomery Trio recordings. This group, almost as much as its guitarist and leader, was a blessing upon jazz.
Not a must have but worthy.......2000-11-21
I recommend this for Wes fans only. If you want to buy an introductory CD to Wes music make it "Incredible Jazz Guitar". However, for those who are familiar with Wes, this piece of work shows a beautiful and relaxed set, where Wes portraits his trademark sound. A great example is "Polka Dots and Moonbeams", one of the finest covers ever made, a tune which, in Wes hands, breathes unique sweetness.
Average customer rating:
- A gateway drug, nothing more, nothing less.
- Decent Selection, But...
- A must-have classical music set!

Customer Reviews:
A gateway drug, nothing more, nothing less. .......2007-03-11
To say that this album constitutes a necessity for the classical music enthusiast would be a great big unarguable lie. It has nothing innovative to offer you as a listener, except for maybe the labelling of melodies such as "My Heart Will Go On" (that god-awful Love Theme from the gruesome film Titanic) as a worthy member of "Best Classics 100". But than again, every collection of things that does not naturally belong together, is bound to have at least one outcast where the connection clearly isn't based on anything but cost and sale-ability.
This might sound like the beginning of a CD-slaughter, or a snobbish review where only the Deutche Grammophone's recordings are meting my standards, but although I am fairly picky when it comes to musical collections, best of albums, and such horrifying destructions of the universality of the works and the intentions of the artist behind it, I am willing to give this collection another chance, since classical music is somewhere between Arabic and wine in degree of unmanageability. It also helps that all the tunes are familiar to almost every one of us, and the fact that the artists' intentions probably got killed by the hundreds of different conductors trying to convey their personal interpretation of the works.
What I am saying is that this CD can be to classical music enthusiast what 'absolute rock' can be to a rock enthusiast, or to someone slightly interested, with no conceptual frames of where to start the search for knowledge. "Best Classics 100" offers nothing except a selection of melodies where there's bound to be one for every taste, but where the album feeling, the entirety or completeness intended by the composer, or conductor, or performer is completely lost in a trade-off made with variety.
The collection is attempted organised by giving each CD a different theme, supposedly to describe the mood of the music, and the labeller succeeds only to a limited extent as we move from themes such as 'uplifting' and 'relaxing' towards 'golden'. I wonder what that golden feeling constitutes. It apparently is to be found in, amongst others, "Jesus Bleibet Meine Freunde", and in "My Heart Will Go On"?
But no matter how I try to describe this CD it will sound worse than it actually is. This because to me it works as a great reference to which I can always turn with my classical music questions. Was it Schumann or Schubert who were the sad one? Of all the -inis, which where which again? Who composed "O Mio Babbino Caro"? The starting point for finding out if you belong to the romantic or the renascence wing, lies within this assemblage, if you look with your ears.
If you feel that classical music is something you like, and you'd like to learn more about it, this is a way to get started. If used together with a book on classical music, or wikipedia, it can be a gateway drug, leading you towards the great different experiences to be found within the different genres of classical music, and within the different periods ranging from the 12th century, maybe even earlier, towards yesterdays and tomorrows spectacular compositions of melodies that conveys a feeling, a state of mind with much more precision than any other musical genre. Expect a fairly alright collection of classical prunes, and you won't be disappointed.
Decent Selection, But..........2005-04-21
...The Audio Quality is really not great. I bought this CD because I am new to classical, and the price was great! 100 songs for 25 bucks, thats like 25 cents a song, most songs are 1 dollar or more. Now I know why it's cheaper. The audio quality isn't that good. I imported the entire collection to my computer using Apple Lossless, and it sounded fuzzy, not crisp, with background noise, and sounded like compressed music, cutting off the frequency response.
I then played the CD's through my home stereo, with the same results. I plugged in my SHURE E5c headphones and the sound was soft, uninviting, lacking punch, with significant backgound noise (not just from the headphones), which was especially distracting when the music would get softer. I have heard much of the music before, and it was much more dynamic, entertaining, this recording seems too flat.
The music selection is ok, but I was hoping for some more interesting selections from the vast classical genre.
Overall, not that great of a recording, but many might not notice the difference, so if you are new to classical or aren't like an audiophile, get this album because it's a great overview of pop-culture classical, and it's pretty inexpensive.
A must-have classical music set!.......2005-01-06
Classical music is, by far, my favorite type of music. It can make you happy or sad, it can make you laugh or cry, and it can make you want to fall asleep or get up and dance. This 6-disc set is a must-have for and classical music-lover! It has all the great composers like Handel, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Bach, and Pachelbel. Some great songs include: Canon In D(Pachelbel), Morning: Peergynt(Grieg), Adagio For Strings(Barber), Cavatina(Myers), and much, much more. Every classical song you can think of is on here and the sound quality is great. So if you're looking for a good classical music CD, this set is all you need. Be prepared to be blown away!

This disc offers 56 pieces from 17th-century compilations, probably best described as early equivalents of the fake books that popular musicians use today. These dance tunes and songs were the pop music of their time, now turned into "classical music" entirely by the aging process. McFarlane bounces through these catchy tunes with great verve; he's obviously having a good time with the music. The mandora is a small member of the lute family, pitched an octave higher than the two other early lutes McFarlane plays. It sounds rather like a ukulele. There is no profundity to be heard on this disc, but it's highly entertaining. As usual with Dorian, the sound quality is superb. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
I love this CD.......2007-06-12
I'm a Baroque musician and also a massage therapist. This is one of the CD's I use when I do massage; I've heard it now hundreds of times, and it still delights. Some very haunting, beautiful passages and excellent throughout. I agree with the other reviewer's assessment that I've never heard a bad performance on a Dorian recording.
Liltin' lute.......2000-05-19
Ronn McFarlane is the perfect man for the job. These pieces for the lute and mandora are what you'd expect from the time and place they were written. Surprising how many of the tunes sound like they were written yesterday. On some you may want to kick up yer heels a wee bit. Sonically, this CD is a gem; crystal clear sound. I've lent this to several persons and so far I've heard no complaints. McFarlane's Dowland CD is highly recommended also.

As I keep saying, I have never heard a poor performance on a Dorian label, and their record remains intact with The Scottish Lute (DOR-90129) and Highland King: the Scottish Lute, Vol. II) (DOR-90257). Between the two, lutist Ronn McFarlane give us no less than 100 short excerpts from the different "Lute Books" that were so popular in the 15th to 17th centuries. There are even some examples of music for the mandora, half the size and an octave higher than a lute. This does not demand intense concentration and is excellent ambient music for relaxing or giving parties. I do wish, however, that more comprehensive notes were included and the multilingual text done away with to make room for them. But the playing is masterful and both CDs are highly recommended.

La Rose Complete.......2000-04-19
Having sung one of the wonderfully crafted pieces on this CD ( La Rose Complete ) I would have to say this CD really can touch your heart and your soul. With my favorite being La Rose Complete, I can't say enough about it- the alto I and alto II part is something majestic, whereas the sopranoI and soprano II part can just blow you away, the tenors sound like distant angels and the bass part in this song is something else. I would recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys classy choir music with a twist a love.
Beauty at its Best.......2000-01-09
Being a lifelong fan of Rock-n-Roll and Rhythym and Blues, I was not expecting to hear classical music that would entirely impress me. THIS is the CD that has greatly changed my indifference towards real music! LA Chamber Singers have a real HIT on their hands! Never before have I heard a group so tightly woven with such beauty in their singing as the LACS. I am especially moved by the Morten Lauridsen 'Les Chansons des Roses'. With the foreplay of the first few songs leading to the climactic 'Dirait-on', I am drawn to tears every time I hear it! Oh, such aural beauty! This CD is a MUST for lovers of beautiful music.
Castelnuovo-Tedesco:Romancero Gitano.......2000-01-04
This CD is full of some of the best choral music I've heard in a long time. If I was forced to choose a favorite, it would be the Lauridsen, "Chansons des Roses". These pieces are performed with great finesse and careful attention to important details like diction, pitch, and dynamics. It is a difficult a capella set to sing, yet it is meticulously performed and is fascinating to hear over and over. The text is very romantic. Beautiful!
Delicious Phrasing, Luminous Sound.......2000-01-01
If you haven't heard the Los Angeles Chamber Singers, you are in for a treat. If you haven't heard this album you will enjoy the depth and variety of the selections. Alternately transcendant and ebullient, these very extraordinary voices float and soar, and the richess of their ensemble leaves me with an almost tactile sense of its luminosity. I was particularly moved by Morten Lauridsen's "Les Chansons des Roses."
Don't miss this one.......1999-12-31
I want to highly recommend this selection. If you haven't tried it you should. The music is exciting and cries out to be heard over and over again. Good listening!

Customer Reviews:
Very nice collection of classical music.......2004-09-09
This is the best CD set of the world's most beautiful classical melodies ever written. Some are very relaxing, while others are so emotional (and beautiful) they make the listener fight back tears. There is not a song on either CD that I do not like. The selections on the second CD are very moving, especially Barber's Adagio for Strings, and John Williams' theme from "Schindler's List". One thing I really like about this collection is the variety of music selected. The music spans from the baroque period to the present day (with a nice arrangement of the theme song from "Titanic". Please do not hesitate upon buying this 2-CD set. You be so glad you did!
Beautiful.......2003-05-24
I especially loved this Cd since I am only a beginning classical music fan. I bought it mainly for relaxation and it sure has met up to all of my expectations. I have fallen in love with the Prince Igor piece. So many songs on this CD are so beautiful that they have made me curious to buy CD's by their artists so I can hear what other wonders have been created. This is my favorite CD of all time.
If you're after a range of classical style, this is a must........2002-08-02
I tend to be a light classical listener. That is to say, I find myself often worn out by the second part of a masterwork. This compilation keeps me interested the entire time with its ranging style selections carefully placed to evoke the broadest of emotional responses. I found myself wishing for more after the 2 1/2 hours it took the two CDs to finish.
If you're like me, and tend to enjoy a changing theme, pace and rhythm when listening to music, I think you'll find this work a welcome addition to your classical collection. On a bias note, track 10 on disk 1 (Piano Sonata No. 14 in C sharp minor ("Moonlight"), Op. 27/2 Adagio sostenuto) is one of my favorite recordings of this piece, so I cant help but recommend it ;)
Excellent compliation.......2000-09-24
Unlike some classical cds, this one contains full length selections, covering a wide range of composers from Bach to a couple of tastefully done popular selections. The recordings were full and expressive, the audio quality excellent. In a sense it is a varation on the 'greatest hits' theme with pieces like Faure's "Pavane," but it does contain some nice surprises, such as Shostakovitch's "Jazz Suite" and Rodrigo's "Concerto de Aranjuez." Excelent cd overall, and a good, pleasing listen

Customer Reviews:
A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26
These 53 songs have been collected by Naxos from their extensive acquisitions from Collins Classics, and perhaps other British sources now out of business. There's a steady cottage industry, year after year, producing the typical English art song, which is usually based on folk songs, but even in more modern idioms is profuondly conservative and nostaligic. Half these songs, not to mention half the composers, are totally unknown to American audiences, but the familiar names of Vaughan Williams and Britten represent high quality, and the lesser lights, such as Warlock and Quilter, are mainstays in this repertoire.
I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.
