Tribute albums are always suspect; classical interpretations of rock even more so--and follow-ups to the same are fraught with mediocrity. Just witness the inexplicable glut of String Quartet Tribute discs to Tool, Bruce Springsteen, and many other top-selling and cult artists. On Hold Me to This, his second run at the music of art-rock group Radiohead, classical pianist Christopher O'Riley avoids all these pitfalls. These aren't easy-listening piano renditions of Radiohead tunes, but deeply inspired, often challenging and dissonant re-imaginings. O'Riley succeeds by taking the music on its own terms. He doesn't try to make it "classical" but lets the classical nature of the music ring out. From the storming chordal overtone clusters of "There There" to the Chopinesque refrain of "The Spinning Plates," O'Riley makes you forget these songs were originally played by a raging rock band. Instead, they seem born on the keys of his piano. His "Paranoid Android" is like Conlon Nancarrow going boogie-woogie one moment and painfully, sweetly rhapsodic the next. I'm not sure how Radiohead fans will respond to this, but piano and classical listeners should rejoice. --John DilibertoCustomer Reviews:

Hold me to this: you WILL be floored by this CD. it's well worth the purchase.
Oddly Boring.......2006-07-16
a bit disappointing.......2006-07-11
Despite a sometimes overloaded sound, the song list is so attractive and O'riley hits so many high notes (if you will..) that the CD is well worth owning. I prefer the "True Love Waits" album.

Album Description
Stew's unique and compelling view of the world as seen through the strange prism of Los Angeles create soundscapes from the heavy groove and sexual intrigue of tracks like 'She's Really Daddy Feelgood' and 'Into Me' to moving, almost elegaic anthems inspired by urban landscapes like 'Cavity' and 'C'mon Everybody' to beautifully skewed songs like 'Ordinary Love' and 'Sister/Mother', this album, from The Telegraph Company, is a stellar body of work.Customer Reviews:
Great songwriting.......2005-01-20
The best album I bought all year!.......2001-10-03
It was one of those Cds I just took a chance on... I liked the cover, the blurbs, the songs titles, etc. and just went ahead and bought it. I wound up with a cd that instantly entered my all-time top 20 list. The first track "Cavity" gives you a good idea what this album is all about-- killer melody, intelligent lyrics, passionate singing, interesting arrangements. Some songs may be difficult to decipher---they tend to be loaded with insider-references to everything from the music biz to the Bible--- but even if you aren't into unraveling all the lyrics, you'll still be able to enjoy the tunes. Stew sounds like a hybrid of Van Morrison and Harry Nilsson with Elvis Costello-esque lyrics and a penchant for Brain Wilson-like arrangements. Now, how can that be bad? Ultimately though, Stew is a true original, and thoughtful listeners should really enjoy his odd ruminations on love, innuendo-laced turns-of-phrase, LA-music-scene-name-dropping (playing checkers/with a roadie from Save Ferris) and sometimes heartbreakingly honest delivery.
What if one musical mastermind listened to and digested every blip of music that emerged from America in the last half century and made an album that succesfully blended everything from Fleetwood Mac to Motown to The Beach Boys? Well, "Guest Host" would be a pretty good guess. It's the rare record that is obviously referential and reverent, but never come across as derivative or "clever". Many bands have tried and failed to make this type of album. Stew has suceeded wildly. A landmark album.

It's all here.......2006-04-14
For the long works, the Piano Concerto is attention-grabbing and beautiful. The Symphonic Dances and the Norwegian Dances are lively and tremendously extraordinary. The lesser-known Symphony in C Minor should be more recognized, as it is as powerful as other symphonies, like Mahler's first and Beethoven's sixth. For the short works, In Autumn and Landkjenning can be best described as sheer masterpieces.
For Peer Gynt, it is good to hear the first digitally-recorded authentic version. The suite version is just not enough for that full listening experience. NOTE: if you want to buy a Peer Gynt that includes the complete dialogue, I would recommend conductor Ole Kristian Ruud's version with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra; the dialogue lengthens the 90-minute work by two hours.
To know the rest is to listen to them straight through. All the works in this box set (especially the Piano Concerto) should be a possession for all Grieg-lovers.
A+
An excellent box-set.......2003-08-30
Neeme Jarvi is very good.
In first CD, there is a powerful performance of Piano Concerto by Zilberstein. She is also great in F.Liszt recordings (at DG Classics). In second CD, works for string orchestra (including, famous Holberg Suite) to be found. And in 3rd and 4th CDs, marvellous recordins of Peer Gynt and Sigurd Jorsalfar (Sigurd, the Crusader)to be found. This works are the first recordings of complete score. Still, speakers to be present at Peer Gynt. And Funeral March for R. Nordraak is very influence in 4th CD.The wind ensemble of Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra is very good...
In 5th CD, there is an unknown work by Grieg: Symphony in C-minor. This work written in early period, but didn't perfomed often. Still, this work's name is "Forbidden Symphony"...And then, a majestic work "Land-Sighting" to be found. This is very successful choral work of composer and he written in a heavenly tone:E Major...And then, there is an unknown work again, an incomplete opera: "Olav Trygvason"... Grieg written this work on a libretto by his friend, Bjornson (a famous poet of Norway), but he could finish first act...
And in last CD, there are other vocal works, and his beatiful work: "Old Norwegian Melody with Variations". And then, 5 Songs to be found. This songs originally written for voice and piano (like other many songs) but he later orchestrated these works. And the first song "The First Meeting" was discovered in 80's and still, they used a new edition, published from new founded manuscript, so this is the first recording of Grieg's beatiful song.
In other words: this box-set is excellent and Highly recommended.
Wonderful recordings, slightly marred by lack of texts.......2003-04-09
This is now the fourth or fifth release for some of these CDs, first came the individual volumes, then the full price box, then releases on budget DG Classikon, and now a Collector's Edition box at half the price, but sadly minus the texts to CDs 2,3 and 6. This won't matter so much in the orchestral songs, CD6, where the texts to Bergtekne, Bergliot etc. are available in other releases or on the Lieder web page, but CDs 2 and 3 are currently the only complete recording of Peer Gynt and the sung or spoken texts are not available outside sheet music collections. Personally (as someone more interested in the vocal music than the orchestral) I would try and locate the original volumes, but at least DG has given those who don't feel the extra expense is justified a cheaper option.
Further recommendation: Anne Sofie von Otter's recording of the Haugtussa song cycle.

THE Peer Gynt.......2007-07-12
As an added bonus, there are some other delightful Grieg masterworks to savor.
Terrific, authoritative Grieg collection from Beecham.......2004-10-08
As for the fill-ups: Grieg's "Symphonic Dance No. 2" may not be a very substantial work, but Beecham makes a good case for it, wonderfully sentimental in the outer sections and troubled in the middle section. The concert overture "In Autumn" is also a fun and dramatic work; and the "Old Norwegian Folksong with Variations" is full of life and color through its many variations, especially in its final ones. The recorded sound is rich, warm analogue that truly brings out the luster of these performances. All in all, these are some terrifically authoritative Grieg performances from a conductor who apparently loved these works and was able to translate that affection into performance. Highly recommended.
A CLASS ACT.......2004-02-20
It does not seem to me that Grieg is even remotely equal to the theme of Ibsen's Peer Gynt, which I believe rivals the story of Faust itself in its contemplation of the issues of love, death and redemption. Grieg does not have the `size' for that. What he is able to do is embroider the theme with musical numbers that are by turns picturesque, sentimental and sometimes even deeply felt beyond mere sentiment. It is a kind of music that called up Beecham's special wizardry in particular. The opening wedding march has the familiar Beecham swagger, the trolls in the Hall of the Mountain King are almost worthy of Peter Jackson, the hackneyed Morning breaks like the first morning, and Ase's death strikes a deeper note. Here the composer actually does get somewhere close, in a simplified way, to the complex tenderness and pathos of the scene where Gynt eases the worn-out old woman out of this world. The orchestral tone Beecham obtains near the end, and the exquisite timing of the final chords, are things worth getting this disc for on their own. Ilse Hollweg as Solveig is quite outstanding in the famous Solveig's Song and in the final lullaby.
For its time the recorded quality is quite extraordinarily good. Beecham was particularly adept at obtaining good recordings, by what combination of personal magnetism and outright intimidation I don't know although it's probably easy to guess. There is a fine little selection of makeweights bringing the playing time of the set to an hour and a quarter.
One of the best of the series.......2001-10-16

Album Description
In his own words, Grieg aspired `to paint Norwegian nature, Norwegian folk-life, Norwegian history and Norwegian folk-poetry in music'. In Autumn sees Grieg take inspiration from the forces of nature, both life-giving and destructive, whether it be from the farmers' harvest celebrations or he ensuing death and decay, while the Symphonic Dances make extensive use of Norwegian folk-melodies. Indeed it has often been said that the famous Piano Concerto has an lement of untamed wildness in its opening timpani roll followed by the cascading chimes of the piano. Whatever its inspiration, this cornerstone of the piano repertoire remains one of most enduringly-popular of all concertos on account of its profusion of inspired melodies, noble eloquence and poetic vitality.Customer Reviews:
"The" Grieg Disc.......2004-06-28
The Royal Scottish National Orchestra is on top form under Bjarte Engeset, who is fast becoming one of my favorite conductors. The sound quality is excellent, and every piece shimmers and glows with remarkable intensity. I have MANY versions of the Piano Concerto, but I've really fallen for Havard Gimse's version, which is both reflective and virile in all the right places. The orchestral contribution is remarkable. They make a wonderful case for In Autumn as well, a gem of an overture which should be played more widely; it has wonderful tunes and the distinct thumbprint of Grieg throughout. Yet perhaps the true highlight of the disc is the Symphonic Dances, which blow away any other version I've ever encountered. This is the first version that made the dances seem truly "symphonic," instead of a lose string of lightweight melodies. The entire piece coheres beautifully, and I was completely blown away by the final dance, with its En Saga-ish echoes.
Luckily, this disc is entitled "Grieg Edition 1." I anxiously await the next volume! Again, this shows why Naxos is one of the most happening labels on the classical scene. Thanks for making me reevaluate Grieg's contribution to classical music.
My only criticism is the double cover. The disc itself has a magnificent painting by Nikolai Astrup which complements the music beauitfully. So why the slip cover with the romantic Scandinavian landscape? Is this a marketing ploy? It's a waste of cardboard...

Album Description
One of America's most prolific and successful composers, Mrs H. H. A. ("Amy") Beach was one of the first women composers whose works were as highly regarded as those produced by men. Best known during her lifetime for her well-crafted songs and short piano pieces, she was also the first American woman to compose in the larger forms. Beach's 117 art songs span the whole of her compositional career. By incorporating musical ideas from many cultures and musical traditions within a late-Romantic framework, Beach's songs show her skillful craftsmanship and profound understanding of text.Customer Reviews:

Fascinating juxtaposition.......2006-10-18
I am too many years removed from the indie rock scene to attempt any kind of analysis of influences in Mr. Cerveris' songwriting. It is enough to say that the ten works, loosely linked by the theme of a romantic break-up, are well-crafted, by turns melancholy, playful, sly, angry, and nostalgic. "SPCA" is vibrant with feeling, an energetic rock beat, and the distinctive vibrato of Corin Tucker. "Dog Eared," another "fast" number, is lively and slyly upbeat. "Golden," one of the most moving songs on this album, offers energetic passages of electric and bass guitars and drums, alternating with Mr. Cerveris' soft, barely-there vocals accompanied by a single accoustic guitar. There are certainly elements of British 70s and 80s rock here and there, but on the whole this is a very personal statement by a remarkably versatile musician.
I highly recommend this...for me, it was both a surprise and a pleasure.
another amazing part of Michael.......2006-05-11
This album is no exception. Michael shoots straight from the heart and it is obvious within this medium as well.
Although I originally missed the heavier voice I am used to hearing, I gradually came to love this other side to it as well.
Whether you are familiar with his other projects or not, this is a great album to feed to your ears. They will thank you.

This is a great recording!.......2000-02-11
Anyhow, this is nothing more than a historic detail and would not count if this recording had not an outstanding first-rate ensemble of singers. Without doubt there is no definitive version of Messiah. Each one has its own distinctive touch and feeling and exploring it is always a pleasant journey through imagination.
As stated by the conductor: "we must concede that performing Messiah with twenty singers and an appropriately balanced instrumental ensemble represents, at best, an imperfect comprimise", it will be easy to understand that this recording does not stand among the greatest and will probably carry some imperfections. I will mention two that kind of disppointed me a little bit. The Overture and the Chorus Worthy is the Lamb, for some reason misses the habitual vigor and strenght. Everything else is great and this is definitely a worth buying.
