Album Description

The Summer of Love had a special look and a special feel, but above all it had a special sound. This collection of 40 hits on 2 CDs recaptures that sound and the DVD features performances by some of your favorites like Jefferson Airplane, the Doors, the Rolling Stones and more.

It's a heck of a start to a career. Before he had released any material in the States, Alexi Murdoch was championed by KCRW's influential tastemaker Nic Harcourt. (Murdoch moved to LA in the late 1990s.) This led to the release of the Four Songs EP, which led to appearances in Garden State and on the The O.C.. Even arranger Van Dyke Parks (Tim Buckley, Harry Nilsson) became a fan, praising his "imaginative chords." Fortunately, Murdoch's self-produced full-length lives up to that early promise. The Nick Drake-inspired "Breathe" and "Orange Sky" are likely to be familiar to most listeners. Another standout is "Home," which shakes up his folky formula with feedback and trip-hop beats. If Time Without Consequence has a fault, it's simply that Murdoch sounds remarkably like fellow Drake devotee José González (right down to his spare finger-picking style). One singer-songwriter is from Scotland (by way of England and Greece), the other from Sweden (by way of Argentina), so it seems unlikely that either musician influenced the other. Plus, great minds do think alike. In any case, Murdoch has fashioned a satisfying debut; the true test will be to follow up with an album that reveals a more distinct personal identity. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars Finally, the full album - worth the wait.......2007-07-03

Alexi Murdoch stands out amongst today's up and coming singer songwriters. With songs like Breathe, Orange Sky and A Song for You, Murdoch is setting the tone in today's folk scene. The way he melds his vocals and guitar is reminiscent of Nick Drake and some of Cat Stevens' acoustic music. But he is really his own thing. If you ever get a chance to see him live, it is well worth it - like the wait for this full length CD.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable piece of art.......2007-06-27

Alexi Murdoch has created a piece of art with this CD. The songs are slow and mellow, but they wash over you like a wave, so filled with such passion you can't help but feel the raw emotion that he sings about. All the songs are great which these days is a rarity. Definately get this cd, if you like any of his songs.

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly beautiful music.......2007-06-11

I'm not at all familiar with Nick Drake so I can't attest to how much Alexi does or does not sound like him. What I can say is that I absolutely love this album. I'm not much of a music reviewer, but I know what I like. His voice is soothing and beautiful. I can't recommend this enough to anyone who likes pretty music.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderfully sublime.......2007-03-11

Alexi Murdoch's simple and delicate lyrics fuse with his whimsical melodies to create a warm soundscape reminiscent of Nick Drake on his Pink Moon album (minus the depression). I recommend this CD to anyone who loves music for rainy days, my favourite song on the album is the lead-off track which features beautiful subtle cello, "All of My Days" is a definite stand-out. If you like this, try out indie surfer songwriter, Todd Hannigan.

3 out of 5 stars Shameless Nick Drake ripoff, but still oddly compelling.......2007-03-05

Every musician or band is, by definition, derivative and influenced by a band or musician who came before.

The best musicians and artists are derivative and influenced by someone else, but forge a sound uniquely their own. One example is Robyn Hitchcock, who is mostly influenced by John Lennon and Syd Barrett, but has crafted his own sound that sounds like no one else. Another example is Talking Heads, who forged their sound from Roxy Music, Brian Eno, and Velvet Underground, yet, again, developed their own sound, which in turn has become tremendously influential. Ryan Adams has channeled the Grateful Dead to great effect, yet retains his own identity. Cat Power/Chan Marshall melds Sinead O'Connor with Janis Joplin, yet, again, has carved out her own sound.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!, on the other hand, are just so blatantly ripping Talking Heads, that they don't really have their own identity. As such, they're interesting for a few songs, but then you want to pull out your Talking Heads CDs and hear the real thing.

In spite of the fact that just about every one of Murdoch's songs sounds like Nick Drake, he still gets your attention, and he has the ability to pull you in. He'd be a lot more interesting, though, if he threw in some other influences, or at least took Nick Drake's sound and forged his own identity. As it stands, there's probably no one else out there who does as good a Nick Drake imitation, but while imitation is the highest form of flattery, you could never put Murdoch on an opening bill with Nick Drake if he were alive today, because he just sounds too much like him.

Good for Murdoch that he's got a fanbase who don't really mind the copycat sound, and maybe some like him precisely because he sounds like Drake. I suspect many of his fans aren't familiar with Drake.

This isn't intended as a negative review. As stated above, I will listen to him play KCRW, but it makes me want to pull out my Nick Drake CDs. There will never be another Nick Drake, in spite of people like Murdoch's best efforts.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not My Style.......2007-05-11

This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!

5 out of 5 stars Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28

For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16

This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Western Music.......2005-07-29

I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."

5 out of 5 stars A great follow-up.......2003-08-29

This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Hard-to-Find Memories.......2007-05-12

This was more than I had bargained for- I was after a few of the individual songs, and find that the whole CD is well-worth it. Now I'm searching out others of the same genre. Thumbs-up to the maker(s) of these CD's of sings that are hard to find, but part of one's life!

3 out of 5 stars All the songs are the originals. What you see is what you get (wysiwyg)........2007-04-06

I bought this compilation because of the cute number, Summertime, Summertime. The song closest to this, in the rock'n'roll genre, is Martian Hop. Martian Hop is by the Ran-Dels. Both songs feature a small vocal ensemble that recites a string of nonsense syllables. In Summertime, this is, "Summertime, summertime, sum-, sum-, summertime." In Martian Hop, this is, "Buh-buh me-me-me, buh-buh me-me-me." I also bought this compilation because it contains Sunny Afternoon, a fine offering from the Kinks. A pleasant surprise was Beach Party. Beach Party is sung by Annette Funicello, America's sweetheart in an era before Meg Ryan and Reese Witherspoon.

But there are some noteable omissions. This compilation should have also contained The Zombies' excellent version of Summertime, the Gershwin composition. Also missing is Sly and the Family Stone's, Hot Fun in the Summertime. And a glaring omission is the classic, Summertime Blues by Eddie Cochrane. And then, a very unfortunate oversight is the lack of Robin Ward's anthemic, Wonderful Summer.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Value.......2007-02-23

I normally don't rate CDs, but this one is an exceptional value for those who like 50s & 60s pop music. Eight of these are on my permanent list for my MP3 player (approx 200 from this genre) and I have 14 of them rated as 4 or 5 stars on my computer favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Pool Party Classic.......2002-07-12

This CD contains 25 tunes straight from summer. Feel the tingle of the noxema, and bring on the hot days, sunglasses, pool volleyball and sand between your toes. The selections are a little bit uneven, though most of them are obvious classics, a few will grow on you, and there were just a couple that were sorta "huh?" An excellent value just looking for a backyard pool party and a perfect summer day, nearly 70 minutes of pure summer. FAR better than Martha Stewart's summer selection CD, which contains only 14 songs and is a very odd mix. Beware that classics probably translates to "oldies" for the under 40 set (and don't you just hate that part?)

4 out of 5 stars Not the best 'summer' album around, but it's worth buying..........2002-03-24

There's many notable summer *classics* to be found on "25 All-Time Greatest Summer Songs", and a few definitely worth mentioning: "Summer In The City" (Lovin' Spoonful), "Sunny Afternoon" (The Kinks), "In The Summertime" (Mungo Jerry), "Here Comes Summer" (Jerry Keller), "Dancing In The Streets" (Martha & The Vandellas) and not forgetting the beautiful, "Theme From A Summer Place" (Percy Faith & His Orchestra). The rest of the CD, however, is rather forgettable. For this listener there's just too many 'fillers' included that *don't* deserve the 'All Time Greatest Summer Songs" tag. Most are lifted from the vintage rock n' roll period, and whereas I have a vested interest in that particular genre, some tracks haven't stood the test of time well. Some are just downright awful. There's a couple of 'novelty' songs here too that have no right being placed on a track listing with the likes of Percy Faith, The Kinks and Mungo Jerry. "Wombling Summer Party" anyone?

It's worth buying for the better songs I previously mentioned. Still, you'd be better off shopping around because this isn't the best summer CD available.

Jon.

5 out of 5 stars The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

5 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

5 out of 5 stars " one of cinema's greatest composers...John Barry".......2001-07-06

This collection of four compact discs...are worth their weight in GOLD! 4 out of 5 stars Some of this is hard to define........2007-03-05

There are a few dreamy, spacey, strange songs are on this recording. Some songs like "Midnight Shift" sound a little depressed and fantasy-like.

"Faster and Faster to Nowhere" sounds frantic yet the deep, soul-sounding male backup singers repeat "trip to nowhere" as if they could care less about anything while observing the frantic person running.

"Now I Need You" has a drug-induced (as does Midnight Shift,) spacey sound with what sounds like a church choir singing in some medieval cathedral.

"Queen For a Day" is the highlight but Donna is not belting out but is instead singing in a fairytale story-style which I guess is appropriate considering the concept.

A few of these songs have sounds & instruments being used that sound less like pure dance music and more like they have a late 1960s psychedelic foundation without the guitar, and combined with synthesizers used in Eurodisco styles popular during the late 1970s and made for artsy types giving these songs a strange, spacey feel which reside in a category hard to define.

Others such as "If You Got It Flaunt It" sound like typical American urban out at the time or what would be used in American movies during the 1970s. To me it is filler as is "A Man Like You" with it's unremarkable nightclub sound.

"Rumour Has It" is a great song especially it's beginning.

I wish Donna would have returned to this strange-sounding, hard to define category after 1983 instead getting ideas from other American women on what type of music to make.

5 out of 5 stars summerfeverloveronafairytalehigh.......2007-02-23

"Once Upon A Time" has always been my favorite by Donna Summer. She really makes you believe that fairy tales do come true. I just love her music and have admired her since I heard "Love To Love You Baby". There isn't a song that she sings on this CD that I don't like. I love her and I love "Once Upon A Time". I just love "Fairy Tale High". She sings "Don't you believe that your dreams can come true, the fairy tale world inside can bring it to you, you just have to wish and you take off and fly on a fairy tale high, fairy tale high, fairy tale high, fairy tale high". "Rumor Has It", "I Love You", "Heaven Knows" all are masterpieces to me! And if you are a believer in romance and love, I would recommend "Once Upon A Time". The Queen of Disco at her very best. I've been on a fairy tale high since! If you are a true Donna Summer fan, this is one CD that should be in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Donna Summer: ONCE UPON A TIME... (1977).......2006-11-16

In November of 1977, Donna Summer released her sixth album entitled, ONCE UPON A TIME... This album is the second of two concept albums, with the first being FOUR SEASONS OF LOVE. The concept to ONCE UPON A TIME... is a re-telling of the Fairy Tale classic, "Cinderella". This is an amazingly clever album.

ONCE UPON A TIME
The first single from the album. This track is, obviously, the title track, and it is simply an amazing track.

FASTER AND FASTER TO NOWHERE
Great track.

FAIRY TALE HIGH
Awesome.

SAY SOMETHING NICE
Great.

NOW I NEED YOU
Amazing.

WORKING THE MIDNIGHT SHIFT
An awesome track.

QUEEN FOR A DAY
Great.

IF YOU GOT IT FLAUNT IT
Awesome, and a great point.

A MAN LIKE YOU
Amazing.

SWEET ROMANCE
Great.

(Theme) ONCE UPON A TIME
This track is just a simple 48 second instrumental interlude.

DANCE INTO MY LIFE
Amazing.

RUMOUR HAS IT
The second single from the album. Awesome track.

I LOVE YOU
The third & final single from the album. Awesome.

HAPPILY EVER AFTER
Great.

(Theme) ONCE UPON A TIME
This here is a track with Donna Summer reading off a simply story, a re-telling of "Cinderella", if you will.

This is simply a fantastic album, and it is an album that only Donna Summer could have recorded and released. Awesome album.

5 out of 5 stars once upon a time Donna Summer made THE BEST RECORDS!.......2006-06-05

Throwing this CD on this Sunday rainy morning - at ear decibal splitting levels - brings me back to the brilliance and excitement of this release. The CD does follow the original LPs tracking so the other reviewer must have a weirdo issue; the charm of this album has always been the disco flow from song to song. Following her influential breakthrough collaboration with Giorogio Moroder on "I Feel Love" from her previous LP "I Remember Yesterday", in terms of singles - this album sank. This release was never truly single oriented as the listener must take in the entire 'disc'. So many remarkable artists list this as a major influence - and it is no wonder. This is the quintessential release by a very talented woman. Moroder and Pete Bellotte created the genius that this product became and they must be honored. This is a ear candy of the highest confection. Donna's follow up, "Bad Girls" continues with this team's efforts, but this has the sweetest disco icing. Donna has had some great follow ups - but as far as discs go, this is shaking disco get - down - hallelujah dance your butt off material - "Once Upon A Time" is a masterpiece. As a concept album it is also leaps above others like Pink Floyd's "The Wall"... this is a great record. If you have never heard it you are in for an incredible, fulfilling listening experience! Add to cart!

5 out of 5 stars A nearly perfect conceptual masterpiece, not just disco, great music period.......2005-12-21

I can't tell you how many times I've listened to this album, first as a kid when it first came out on a stunning 2-LP set (who can forget the Scavullo gatefold sleeve?) and then later the CD reissue. This was Donna before she broke into the masses, before LIVE AND MORE, and before BAD GIRLS - I think it stands on its own as an ambitious, perfectly realized conceptual work of art when few pop artists, disco and otherwise, were even aiming this high, and delivering. With slick Teutonic production by Moroder/Bellotte, soaring vocals from Summer, and a clutch of addictive, propulsive grooves, ONCE UPON A TIME equals anything Donna has ever released. With classic Donna anthems like RUMOR HAS IT, I LOVE YOU, FAIRY TALE HIGH, and especially NOW I NEED YOU (way, way ahead of its time, imagine Kraftwerk meets gospel), this is essential for fans of great quality music, no matter the genre. Disco never died - but this is heaven.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2007-01-03

This collection pulls together many of the great songs from this very short time of musical history. This particular volume, though, is the best of the set. I did not get the others due to the tracks they include.

3 out of 5 stars Psychedelia and the Summer of Love.......2006-11-04

There are songs on this CD which will take you right back to the days of Flower Power, peace signs, Love In's and chemical alteration (smile). I was disappointed in a few of the tunes included - not what I would call TOP 40 at all - obsure ones. There were though, enough to get me to purchase it. I simply burned it to my computer, and deleted the few that just didn't reach me. So - if you have a hankering for remembering these days (which I will always have - and not the chemical alteration phase - just the memories of living for something larger than yourself)... buy it.

3 out of 5 stars nostalgic collection.......2004-10-26

For some, the summer of 1967 was a special moment in time. Briefly, optimism and idealism combined with youthful enthusiasm to create a feeling than change was happening all around and that anything was possible. Songs from this collection fairly represent some of the feeling of that time.

For those who lived through that brief moment, this music will likely take you back. It is pleasant nostalgia, just before violence and drug commerce made all of that change into an ugly thing. The songs are light and hopeful. For those who are interested in that time, a listen to the music from then is revealing. However, these songs are, for the most part, pretty light weight. Some are quite forgetable, and a few have aged so poorly as to make one cringe to hear them now (Eric Burdon's "trans-love airways" for example).

So this is a collection for those who want a pleasant spin down memory lane or who just want to examine that moment in the past. Others may wonder why anyone would listen to this simple stuff. Musical style has grown and progressed way past these pleasant numbers now.

4 out of 5 stars If you want it, you've got it!.......2004-05-06

This is a high quality compilation for those who really dig this genre of music. Personally, I bought the CD just for the two gorgeous songs "San Francisco" and "Love is All Around." Either one of those would be worth the price of the CD, but there are lots of classics included. A few of the tracks don't seem to stand the test of time particularly well, but may be worthwhile to those who have an historical interest.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT! FLOWER POWER AT ITS BEST........1999-06-20

The maturity of the senior tracks(San Francisco, Love is all Around, San Franciscan Nights, etc),and the gloss of the junior titles(Reach out of the Darkness, Lazy Day, Sunshine Girl)combine to make a great CD. You can almost smell the flowers and practically feel the warmth of the sun on your face.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "The Summer Smiles, The Summer Knows".......2006-01-07

"When Monica Mancini set out to record this retrospective of songs from films, she clearly had her passions in order. Monica comes by her affinity for the medium honestly, having grown up in a house permeated with some of the best film music in history, from the pen of her incredibly prolific father, Henry. So it is no surprise that this collection has all the artistry, pathos, and musicality that it so deserves." ~ Dave Grusin, Liner Notes - 2002 ~

Dave Grusin, an expert arranger, conductor, pianist, film scorer himself has described this album so perfectly. The choice of material in this CD is impeccable with Monica Mancini's graceful interpretations and not to mention the flawlessly beautiful arrangements by Torrie Zito, John Calandrelli, Michael Lang, Patrick Williams, George Doering, Ray Ellis, Harvey Cohen and John Frizzell. There are twelve theme songs from various remarkable films in this recording and most of the tracks were backed up by an orchestra with the exception of a few.

The theme song from the movie "Summer of '42" penned by the creative husband-and-wife-team of Alan & Marilyn Bergman and composer Michel Legrand "The Summer Knows" is one of my top choices from this collection. Splendidly arranged by Michael Lang and Harvey Cohen on string section, she renders this timeless song so true to its essence and making it the most beautiful version, bar none!

Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "Alfie" (from the movie of the same title), is a moving song accompanied only by the sublime piano playing of Michael Lang. She has an exquisitely beautiful voice, the kind that still shines without the trimmings and backing up of an orchestra, (the kind that still glows even on A Cappella singing). Another affecting song and a favorite of mine is "Too Late Now," a Burton Lane and Alan Jay Lerner treasure and theme from the movie "Royal Wedding." The orchestral arrangement was done by Torrie Zito, a fine pianist/arranger/conductor who worked briefly with the legendary musical icon, Frank Sinatra. I loved the way he injected a classical touch on his arrangement, almost sounding like one of Claude Debussy's masterpieces. I would say that this is one of the best tracks. Ditto with another Torrie Zito arrangement, Johnny Mandel and Paul Webster's "The Shadow of Your Smile" from the movie "The Sandpiper." Ms. Mancini gave these classics the retire-the-trophy-treatments and made them her very own.

The lovely opener, Ennio Morricone and Gregg Field's "Cinema Paradiso," arranged by Jorge Calandrelli, is also one of the standouts. Another beauty is "I'll Never Say Goodbye" from the movie "The Promise" with piano accompaniment by Michael Lang. The finale "Over The Rainbow" from "The Wizard of Oz" is simply divine with orchestral arrangement by Ray Ellis.

This recording produced by Ms. Mancini's musician husband, Gregg Field, truly showed off not only the singer's vocal artistry, but her classy and elegant style of singing. Thank you Ms. Mancini for your wonderful gift of music. Music to enjoy forever!

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent Monica!.......2004-06-28

My favorite song of all time is "The Shadow of Your Smile" from the movie "The Sandpiper". Until now, the 2 best versions of it were by Barbra Streisand and Tony Bennett. By FAR, this is THE best version of that song. Pure, without "vocal gymnastics", screaming, yelping or other artificial "stylings".. here it is sung as it was written, perfectly performed with beautiful orchestration. The rest of the album is no less miraculous. It is stunning. "A Day in the Life of a Fool", "Cinema Paradiso" and the haunting and tender "Theme from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" are just as lavish and well-crafted. Okay Monica, now could you release one album a year instead of one album every 3 years? Pleeeeassee??

5 out of 5 stars She's chocolate and creme!.......2004-01-29

Seeing Monica Mancini on stage singing the theme from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, hearing Gregg Field's drums, seeing the multi-media film clip behind her... is like having chocolate and creme!

Monica does not belt you to death, she does not yell at you, she does not punch notes into your being... she soothes you to her, lures you, with a voice that has been hidden for years.

Her voice is perfect in pitch, tone, and her ability to hit every single note as if she were born to sing. Clearly having inherited talent from her mom Ginny and her dad Henry.

On this cd I love the way she embraces other composers songs..."Baby Mine" just one of them. I about melted when she sang that song.

She has a great sense of humor on stage, is spontaneous, and is herself.

She has a great secure personality and stage persona and she has the family roots to give you a chill in your bones when she shares them with you in stories and song.

Hearing her sing live is like being home!

5 out of 5 stars Astonishing.......2003-09-04

I sample A LOT of jazz vocalists (for some reason most contemporary jazz vocalists seem to be female) but initially dismissed Monica Mancici because she's the child of a famous father. Henry was very classy and as accomplished as musicians get, and such qualities rarely get passed down the line. What a mistake. I only heard her Mercer album because it was -- thankfully -- being played in a store I was visiting. I bought it, loved it, and was primed for this collection. A solid Five Stars. There's new stuff here (for me) and old songs done splendidly. Over The Rainbow, aside from its original iconic take by "Judy," has been covered hundreds of times. And Monica's take? Quite simply as good as any. With this release I've recognized what I love about Monica's voice: Aside from being simply perfect technically, her voice glows like a crackling fireplace! I mourned the recent passing of Rosemary Clooney, and now feel that there's a relatively new vocalist who I can follow for many years. Live or recorded, I'll be there ...

5 out of 5 stars Monica's Latest is the best yet.......2003-06-04

Sorry, but I don't worry about the nuts and bolts of every particular detail of an album. I play what I enjoy and Monica's albums bring me that enjoyment. Cinema Paradiso has rarely left my CD Player. I'm only sorry she appears not to have a web page. Where someone like Michael Jackson or Dixie Chicks are all over the Internet, virtually no information is available concerning Monica Mancini. It's impossible to find a concert schedule. I hope she produces another album soon, I've worn out her others.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars not enough Galway.......2003-10-02

There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.

5 out of 5 stars Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03

I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.
