5 out of 5 stars Matt is the Man.......2007-01-24

Drummer Matt Wilson's 1999 gazebo set at our local Freihofer's Jazz Festival remains a benchmark for me by which other performances are measured. Artfully tempering their monstrous chops with a wit and whimsy, Wilson and his forward-thinking quartet showed that reverence for jazz tradition needn't be stoic and stiff. They were both a revelation and joy to behold that sunny afternoon.
"The Scenic Route" is Wilson's Arts & Crafts third CD on Palmetto. Joined once again by trumpeter Terell Stafford and Dennis Irwin on bass and clarinet, the newest member of the group is Gary Versace on piano, organ, and accordion.
Drummers aren't usually noted for their compositional abilities. Wilson however, has repeatedly shown a knack for writing tunes that are both catchy and substantive. More importantly they pass the "credibility test" as they hold their when set alongside gems from the pens of some the genre's biggest names.
The disc opens with the Wilson-penned title track, an infectiously funky rump-shaking romp cut from similar cloth as trumpeter Lee Morgan's groundbreaking hit "The Sidewinder." Be warned, this theme hangs with you long after the tune is over.
Elsewhere he again effectively tips his hat to the soul-jazz of the 60s via the wistful organ-drenched soul of "25 Years of Rootabagas" and the slinky-swing of "Feel the Sway."
On "In Touch With Dewey" Wilson pays homage to saxophonist Dewey Redman, his close friend and long-time collaborator who passed away earlier this year.
Among the other stops are the group's no-nonsense drive through Monk's "We See" and the one-two punch of Ornette Coleman's jaunty "Rejoicing" giving way to the deliciously gentle understatement of Pat Metheny's "The Bat."
Bobby Hutcherson's "Little B's Poem" is an effective piano feature, spotlighting Versace's light touch on the solo intro and the Bill Evans informed trio segment which follows. Stafford completes this glorious group effort as he chimes in on muted trumpet.
The disc-closing "Our Prayer/Give Peace A Chance" finds Wilson and his Swayettes superimposing Lennon's vocal (to great effect) over Donald Ayler's hymn-like tune.
Throughout the disc Stafford's playing is nothing short of absolutely marvelous- lyrical, unfettered, tasteful, tasty, cool yet hot, and to the point. Yet another reason to check this disc out is to hear the trumpet done right.

5 out of 5 stars A New Wave You Can Ride.......2007-01-23

Ever since free jazz scared off the timid, jazz has been subject to an early obituary. With "Scenic Route," Matt Wilson's Arts and Crafts group demonstrates new approaches to jazz that swing, that are accessible, and fun--elements sorely missing from much of the "new" jazz genre. Matt Wilson is a percussion section. He plays trap drums with the best of them but colors his rhythms with sounds from surprising sources. Listen, you'll hear the magic. Gary Versace on piano and organ is also a color commentator with sounds and technique that will allow you to forget funk...just for a while. Dennis Irwin is strong and lyrical on bass, a reliable timepiece for Wilson plus he plays a clarinet duet with Trumpet player, Terrell Stafford on Albert Ayler's "Our Prayer," with Versace contributing an accordian bit to put some real shine and appeal to a free jazz anthem. Stafford plays a great and melodic horn, emoting with New Orleans lip slurs and cleanly pulling off some fantastic and thoroughly new jazz lines. But wait, there's more! Wilson calls upon a group of backup singers called the "Swaylettes" to provide a novel wash for "Feel the Sway" and John Lennon's "Give Peace a Chance." All totaled, you'll find plenty of old jazz sugar with some appealing new jazz spice on "Scenic Route." Highly recommended.

Toronto Hip Hop crew the Oddities have just dropped their first album The Scenic Route and it does not disappoint. It's a must have more any hip hop fan of Indy or major label releases. The Oddities are Bookworm, J-StaRRRrrr!!!, Psy, Sni-whip, and JSN JNS all talented emcee's in their own unique way. Bookworm, also the producer of the group, has an impressive writing style, that gets the most out every topic he touches. J-StaRRRrrr!!! is hella tight. His rhyme schemes flow perfectly with crystal clarity reminiscent of Hiero's A-Plus. Psy is intelligent poet whose words flow effortlessly between them. He flips his lines rhyming syllables, words, and whole sentences. Sni-Whip is a crafty lyricist whose tongues move a mile a minute. And finally JSN JNS, bring a beat you over the head, dope, battle, simile type or style with just the right amount of charisma. The beats are incredible. Oddities, the title track is a banger. While coming down is melodic opus that will tug at your soul. This album is some of the best music to come Canada in a while. Go get it!

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2000-09-13

I was introduced to these guys by the public radio show "New Sounds". This is amazing stuff, but perhaps only if you consider yourself an "artiste" - or regularly listen to "New Sounds". This group is usually considered jazz, but there are some covers of classical stuff, original compositions, art songs... it's kind of hard to define. It's funky, dark & cynical, quirky, very funny, and definately fun. I also bought Madame Marie's Temple of Knowledge, but I don't think it's as good as this one. Perhaps the album cover sums it up best.

I saw these guys live last night and I have to say they were quite bad. They're like The Doors-meets-any bad band you can choose. Lyrically terrible also. They opened up for Clinic, who are awesome. Too bad I had to sit thru this.

5 out of 5 stars Strange connection.......2004-01-16

this music gradually blows your mind. each time you listen you will hear something new, even if you've heard the song five times before. very strong rope.

The Low Flying Owls are one of the best rock bands to come along in a long time! I've seen them live several times and they always put on an amazing show! All their albums are great, if you have the money buy them!

    Trio improvisations

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Scenic Route.......2007-03-21

These digital concert recordings are from March and May of 1998. The first four numbers are from Musique Action in France and the fifth is from London's Red Rose club. The total time is sixty seven and a half minutes. All of the instruments are used without amplification and the sound quality of the recordings is excellent. There is no noise from the audience at all. Sounds like studio to me.

John Butcher plays soprano and tenor saxophones and is endlessly creative on both; scurrying, popping the pads, exploring and stretching thresholds of sound and volume at will. Evan Parker may have been an early influence but everything heard here is from Butcher's own musical vocabulary.

Durrant and Russell are just as unique. There doesn't seem to be any reference point for either of them. Derek Bailey for Russell-maybe. Durrant's in a class all alone. He may be better known for his use of electronics in experimental musical settings than he is for his violin playing. On this disc, his bowing and plucking fits comfortably between guitar and saxophone. It's pure improvisation and engaging as all get-out.
Throughout the program, the players seem to take their time. Nothing sounds hurried. Instruments drop in and out in an apparently random way. It's a fascinating listen.

Emanem continues to document freely improvised music from a host of creative talents. Many of these players have been doing their own thing for decades now. If you enjoy free improvisation, particularly if you are familiar with any of these players, by all means, jump in. It's tremendously rewarding stuff.
