Editorial Reviews
On a beach in Brazil, in a palace in Taiwan and in an all-night Haitian dance party on the French Riviera, Ed Harlow has been schooled.
Steeped in samba, bludgeoned by the blues and yes, soaked in soca, Harlow pours his musical experiences into sidestepping compositions and uncluttered solo offerings.

Textures 95.......2004-07-05
Rich programme of music is a delight.......2002-12-31
Inspired work.......2001-04-20
Several of the tunes show a classical approach and manage to achieve a very free, loose feeling while still conveying cohesion. For example, the aptly named "Textures 95" opens with abstracted vibes and piano and sonorous violin sounds. Various instruments join the piece, including Abrams' piano, producing a layering of sound. It all proceeds with a sense of musical logic that produces a satisfying feeling of completion.
The album is richly veined. "The Prism 3" features some Latin-flavord drumming and fragmented horn lines to produce a sense of musical drama that builds to a great trumpet solo from Eddie Allen, who even quotes "Tequila" at one point. Drumer Reggie Nicholson's drumming on this piece and throughout is superb. He plays all over the instrument and is as comfortable playing Latin rhythms as he is improvising freely when there is no clear time signature.
The hardest-driving piece is the great "11 over 4," which allows plenty of improvisational space to all the musicians, while remaining just close enough to the musical edge to keep the listener off balance.
Adding to the diversity that is the core of the album is the variety of instrumentation. Accordian (Tony Cedras) is featured prominently on several pieces, and Abrams also manages to work in violin, harp and vibes, as well as reeds and trumpet.
Finally, for those interested in a truly free piece, check out the closing "Ensemble Song," which challenges the listener to follow the band through a series of musical landscapes. The destination of the journey is never determined for the listener, but this listener followed eagerly, more than willing to make the trip. It's a blend of free rhythms, the spoken word, percussion, and imaginative combinations of sound.
Throughout, Abrams' piano is a constant presence. He does not indulge in technique for its own sake, but contributes some fine individual performances, particularly on "Textures 95" and the challenging "Hydepth." He also cooks on "11 over 4."
"One Line Two Views" is, simply stated, a master work by a dedicated musical innovator.

Mature and vibrant.......2003-04-18
His composing and arranging techniques are at their peak here with his wonderful, original instrumental pieces and his treatments of some well-known standards with Pernille Aidt. The combo is brilliant yet understated, intelligent conversationalists who speak clearly and succintly but capture so much in the understated things they say. Harlow's sax tone and technique will hopefully be recognized soon as the A-list contender that it is.
This CD is an excellent addition to anyone's jazz collection, an independent CD that will stand up to many of the major label efforts. Slide this disc in, settle back with a glass of wine and the one you love and watch the heat rise.

Tim Mahoney.......2002-07-15
Tim Mahoney's Debut CD is very good, raw sound.......2002-02-27
There are also the classics such as "Lay Down Low", a song that became a trademark song with the live crowd and "Mr. Fancy", a song about his father. "Talk to Me" also became fans favorite in live shows, also called the "Five Dollar song" by those who drank too much at the shows.
The sound of Tim is compared to Gin Blossoms and Hootie and the Blowfish. If you like this type of music, you will like the music of Tim Mahoney and the Meenies, (at this time the band was called "The Meenies", but Tim never printed his road band on his CDs as he was a solo artist.
The songs are really raw and not over produced. Since time was money for Tim on this CD, what you hear is what you get. This CD contains 11 great songs and probably some of the best songs ever written by Tim Mahoney.
Check out the website TIMMAHONEY.COM for sound clips of all of the music.
