3 out of 5 stars when is it classic and when is it stale?.......2007-04-05

I didn't enjoy this cd as much as I expected. Guess it's all in the ears of the reviewer. I had heard too much like it before and it wasn't strong enough as a classic to hold my interest.

5 out of 5 stars great compilation.......2006-11-08

this CD is a compilation of Tito Puente's music, mostly recorded in the 50's and early 60's. Every selection is a winner, and if you are just getting started listening to Tito Puente's music, this is a good jumping off point. However, please note: this is not a CD of strictly "mambo" or "salsa" music, there are other selections here that do not fit that category, although all of the tunes are Latin in flavor.

5 out of 5 stars Should be better known.......2006-06-16

I had the pleasure of attending a Tito Puente concert a few years before his death. The man loved what he was doing and his concert was full of joyous, dancable music. Salsa is more popular now than when Puente started his career so you would think that more people would be interested in his music. This is the type of cd to listen in the background or to just dance non stop. Too bad more people will not have the joy of listening to his live concerts.

5 out of 5 stars A great first Tito Puente album.......2004-04-10

Get a great introduction to the early work of Tito Puente, El Rey, the King. Tito Puente, salsa extraordinaire and father of afro-jazz, was an incredible talent who will be long remembered. This CD is the perfect collection to get started with Puente's vast library.

Smooth latin grooves are guaranteed on every track. Scary tribal rhythms shine through on Dance of the Headhunters. As one of my friends said, if you don't bob your head to Ti Mon Bo, you probably don't have a pulse. Night Ritual, Hong Kong Mambo, and El Cayuco would rank as some of my favorites if I had to choose, but thankfully I don't.

Informative liner notes give a good history lesson about Tito's roots, how he begun, and how he lasted and played amazing music even into his older years. Puente will certainly be remembered for one of the longest lasting, highest quality musicians the world has ever seen.

A great stepping stone for other Puente albums, this will give a brief introduction to many of the styles Puente cultivated over the years. I suggest Mambo Birdland: Dancemania, a live album from the late 1990s, as a wonderful chance to hear Puente and his full orchestra in rare form, playing a live show in the Palladium, decades after his playing originally sparkled there.

A high quality album all around, a great beginning to more Puente albums. Highly recommended to any newcomers to salsa who have interest. As the liner notes proclaim, El Rey esta meurte: long live the King!

5 out of 5 stars the very best of sergio mendes and brazil 66.......2007-01-28

this album is amazing. retro, spicy and just flat out good.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest musical groups ever!.......2006-08-26

I just recently discovered Brasil '66 when I heard "Pretty World" on a jazzy oldies type station. I knew instantly that the singer was someone special & a master singer. Now I'm listening to many of their songs and I never get tired of them. Their music is just pure, clean, good, real music! It is free from technical gimmicks or anything heavy or unnecessary. Their music is so happy, innocent, and fun. I LOVE IT. I can't get enough of it! They're definitely my favorite right now. The best thing about Brasil '66 is Lani Hall. What a great singer she is. Also the jazzy bossanova instrumentals are refreshingly different from anything I've listened to before. I'm looking forward to getting better hi-fi equipment so I can hear them in all their glory. I bet they sound really great on a tube stereo system.

5 out of 5 stars Love this CD!.......2006-08-08

I listen to this CD when I go for my evening walks. It's wonderful music to walk to (and dance to!). I am absolutely crazy about Sergio Mendes & Brazil 66!. My favorite song on this CD is "Sometimes In Winter." It's a beautiful, haunting song. All the songs are great, but that is the best.

5 out of 5 stars The K-Man was right........2002-04-25

This CD is a timeless, time-capsule treasure trove of pure pop pleasure. Sergio Mendes is a bossa nova Bacharach - not just because he covered both types of music, but because he shares whith the American an interest in revivifying the aesthetic of Tin Pan Alley, tempering it with a 60s pop melancholy (both especially cherish the inherent sadness of brass), and, in Mendes' case, cooling it with jazz discipline gleaned from his association with Jobim. The half century of melodic miracles on this CD may be divided into three types:

1. Cover versions of pop standards so annoyingly familiar you never want to hear the originals again. Mendes takes songs by the likes of the Beatles, Bacharach, Jimmy Webb and Simon & Garfunkel, re-arranges and re-imagines them in a samba mode, convincing you that they were originally written in Brazil after all. 'The Fool On The Hill' nearly collapses under its visionary excess; 'Day Tripper' becomes alive through slick jazz rhythms; 'What The World Needs Now' throttles at a frightening pace; 'Cheslea Morning' and 'Night and Day' exude sunny Rio rays; 'Norwegian Wood' brings out the yo-yo intensity buried in the original.

2. Arrangements of bossa nova classics by Mendes' old jamming cohorts. These are less radical than the above, and the attempts by anonymous, if proficient, session singers to replicate the idiosyncratic Astrud/Joao vibe don't always work; but the subtle reworkings offer new takes on old favourites - 'Bim Bom' is especially definitive, Mendes mining the wistfulness in the most frivolous of songs, sensing the music's soul in the piano. 'One Note Samba', which segues here into 'Spanish Fly', shouln't work, and doesn't, but is invigorating nonetheless.

3. Less familiar covers and original songs (written by Mendes and friends), which rarely equal the emotional depth of Jobim or Bonfa, but offer groovy bliss, warm generosity, bouyant fun and reflective sorrow in equal measures. 'Sometimes In Winter' is a pretentious epic with the most glorious melodic bridge; 'Pretty World' is one of the few songs that knows what being rapturously in love actually sounds like; 'Cancao Do Nosso Amor' and 'Pradizer Adeus' know the same despondancy that provoked Jobim's 'Insensatez'.

This division is, of course, arbitrary and artificial - unique production, settings and instrumentation mean each and every song sounds like a Mendes original. Cosmo Kramer was right - some people can still go wild for Sergio Mendes.

Jazz and Latin music are each irresistible on their own. Ritmo de la Noche combines them with a brilliance that would shame a rainbow. This collection of Latin jazz classics includes jazz men such as flutist Herbie Mann, who embraces tough Cuban rhythms on Horace Silver's "Señor Blues," from 1965, and the Fania All Stars' conga man, Ray Barretto, gliding into smooth-jazz territory with 1979's infectious "La Cuña." Astrud Gilberto brings bossa nova into the mix with the seductive "Ponteio" from 1971, featuring Stanley Turrentine playing the Stan Getz role on sax. Argentina's Gato Barbieri wields his familiar sultry tenor saxophone on the cha-cha-cha "Sweet Glenda," while perennial crossover star Carlos Santana hitches his unmistakable Bay Area barrio rock to 1973's percolating "Samba de Sausalito." The genius of the individual songs is matched by the effortless flow of the entire disc. And seminal selections like Mongo Santamaria's "Watermelon Man" from 1965 benefit from the clean and detailed remastered versions here. --Bob Tarte

I'm a big fan of Joe Cuba's music which is why I bought this Best of Joe Cuba Sextet, but this best of album released by Charly is not so great.

The songs are of low quality (to the point of being muffled). They even went as far as trying to remix the original songs such as Bang Bang (one of my favorite Joe Cuba songs), which came out poorly. Advice to record distributors trying to make a quick buck with best of albums, don't mess with original classics. If so, then make it clear to the consumer and don't try to pass it off as a Best of album featuring classic "originals". Call it the "Best of poorly done re-mixes done on the cheap album".

        5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2007-06-10

According to my taste, this CD is absolutely superb! All songs have their unique signature, none is like the other. All of them are Latin Jazz, but some are more into hard, modern Latin Jazz, others are into the classical sounds of the Latin Jazz; some of them are more jazzy, others more Latino. You can easily recognize a mambo ("A la P.P."), or a soul-lifting blues ("It Never Gets Old"), but my favorite song is still "A Mis Abuelos". I consider this one special because it starts with a typical Spanish Flamenco, switching then smoothly into the Cuban Jazz sounds keeping the same musical theme. If you are a Latin Jazz fan and you seek for variation in one single CD, go for it!

Trumpeter Jesus Alemany came up through the ranks of the Sierra Maestra band and founded ¡Cubanismo! in 1995. Since then, the group has garnered a fervent worldwide following with its tightly performed combination of elegant Cuban son and freewheeling jazz. On this greatest hits set, the band ranges between blockbusters such as "Mambo U.K."--which has since been used in a particularly ubiquitous TV commercial--the calypso-flavored "Paso en Tampa," and "Marie Laveaux," a tribute to a New Orleans voodoo queen. The album also includes a pair of previously unreleased and highly entertaining versions of classic Bob Marley tunes. A rumba-infused take on the anthem "Get Up, Stand Up" features the lilting sound of veteran Jamaican guitarist Ernest Ranglin, while reggae vocalist Luciano heats up "Could You Be Loved." Produced by Nili Belkind for a project left mysteriously incomplete, these gems add fresh luster to an already secure crown. --Christina Roden
